Alyssa Wong studies fiction in Raleigh, NC, and really, really likes crows. She was a finalist for the 2016 John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, and her story, “Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers,” won the 2015 Nebula Award for Best Short Story and the 2016 World Fantasy Award for Short Fiction. Her fiction has been shortlisted for the Pushcart Prize, the Bram Stoker Award, the Locus Award, and the Shirley Jackson Award. Her work has been published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Strange Horizons, Nightmare Magazine, Black Static, and Tor.com, among others.
I decided to read this one as soon as it came in, ahead of what I was currently reading, as I've been a fan of Aphra since picking up the first omnibus blind.
This 3rd volume was as fun as the last and again not quite hitting the heights of the 1st. I think the reason I've not liked Wong's run as much is partly due the balance of adventure and action to the soap opera aspects being a bit more on the latter.
It was good to see Aphra evolve further in these last two volumes but I'm less of a fan of her having a big crew.
Overall it's a fun adventure and I enjoyed reading the Sana Starros mini series again that fits well in this collection.
One big annoyance with this collection is that Marvel didn't add the 2 issues of Greg Pak's Darth Vader run that's referenced in the included issues! The Sana Starros mini is referenced and included. Plus the recent one shot, A New Legacy, with an Aphra story should have been included too.
Kieron Gillen's Doctor Aphra was amazing. It had an incredible cast of memorable characters, dark and compelling story lines, thieving, backstabbing and sarcasm. Wong elected to focus more on romantic relationships this time around (yay!). Parts of this omnibus were ok (the Sana Starros series was solid), but overall it was extremely disappointing. I can't see myself ever reading this again and I wish I had my money back.
