Unraveling Magic and Shadowed Pasts

Rate this book
Mosa and Annora were the best of friends, their days filled with the quiet rhythms of sanctuary life. Nestled into the heart of Aurelia, Rosethorn was a sanctuary for gifted designers—individuals who could make magic dance within fabrics and color hum with power.

When the two are tasked with creating a pair of gloves for a wealthy client, Mosa makes an unthinkable mistake and accidentally dyes them a forbidden shade. The color is meant for the fallen kingdom of Ombra—magic long unseen—and the creation sets off a series of events that neither Mosa nor Annora is prepared for.

They agree to keep the gloves a secret, but when Annora goes missing, Mosa can’t help but believe her capture is tied to them. Needing to find her friend, she hires the rugged huntsman, Theron, to guide her through the treacherous forests of Ombra. But Theron has secrets of his own, ones not in Mosa’s best interest, and as the two navigate through the dark forest they find themselves captured by the very king she hoped to avoid.

Annora, raised away from the political machinations of her father’s court, wakes to a world she has tried to forget. Her father, the king of Aurelia, has forced her from her sanctuary life and back into royal duties. The first duty being an arranged marriage between her and Prince Brander—the heir to the dark kingdom of Ombra. Their match is no love story and is discovered to be a ploy in a larger game designed to ignite a war between their kingdoms. Caught in her father’s schemes, Annora makes a deal with Prince Brander in hopes of protecting Mosa and finding a way to untangle the threads of war.

Unraveling Magic and Shadowed Pasts is book four in The Enchanted Woods Cottagecore Collection.

Perfect for fans of SORCERY OF THORNS , A FAR WILDER MAGIC , and SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMEN , Unraveling Magic and Shadowed Pasts is a spellbinding tale of discovery, friendship, and the magic that lingers in forgotten places.

I really enjoyed this. It was such an interesting word, and I absolutely loved Mosa and Annora. This honestly could have been a trilogy, and I would have been thrilled to spend more time with these characters. I loved the twists and turns and uncovering the truth of all that had happened. The ending was just perfect and made me so happy. This is going to be a great one to read over and again.

very unique magic system. 🌈
quirky and relentless FMCs.
Golden retriever MMCs.. 🥰
shocking revelations.. 😱
I do wish it was just a tad longer. some scenes felt like they could have been a little bit more fleshed out. but other than that it had really good pacing.. and was a very enjoyable read.
glad to have been a part of the ARC team.

ARC received in exchange for honest review.

This book felt like a warm cup of tea after a long day. I love magical systems based on color, and Aiden and Thiele craft one with vibrancy and charm. The idea of purple being forbidden creates an interesting concept of what the world would look like without even one hue, and imagining people that can control different aspects of the remaining shades - mold them, use them, keep them alive - makes for a ripe sandbox to play in. Our main couples are both so perfect for each other, I can’t pick a favorite. Theron and Mosa have a rural charm, while Brander and Annora are the royal it couple (but don’t let that fool you - they’re just as wild as their friends). Pushed into a race against time to save the land of Ombra before their color bleeds completely, our heroes whirl readers into a spirited quest to save their kingdoms. Adventure and romance abound in a book that reminds me of the stories I used to read as a child, with a spicy twist - short, sweet, and full of heart.

I enjoyed reading Unraveling Magic and Shadowed Pasts, I really loved these two authors coming together and creating this story. Both authors are fabulous on their own and to bring them together was great, reading felt seamless.
The characters created really brought the story together, I liked how the chapters alternate between the characters. I love multiple points of views as I feel they give more insight into the storyline. I felt the magic set up in this novel was unique, I would have liked to have had a bit more depth about it... delve deeper into the magical system. Though I did really enjoy what I read. I really felt like the storyline moved along at a great pace and I was hooked in the story. I really loved reading Unraveling Magic and Shadowed Pasts.

My first ever ARC Review!

✨ARC Review✨

Thank you @adinachiles and @devon_thiele_writes for sending me an eARC of this lovely book!

I was absolutely enchanted by Unraveling Magic and Shadowed Pasts. Set in the lush, cottagecore world of Aurelia, this story weaves a richly imagined tapestry of friendship, mystery, and magic. At its heart are two devoted friends, Mosa and Annora, whose bond feels deeply authentic from the very first page!

What truly stood out was the inventive magic system—especially when a simple dye job turns forbidden, unexpectedly unlocking ancient dark powers tied to the kingdom of Ombra. That moment is such a great catalyst for tension and curiosity.

I loved how a seemingly small mistake cascades into a dangerous adventure—so well written!
The pacing is beautifully balanced: one moment, we’re savoring the gentle rhythms of life at Rosethorn, and the next, we’re plunged into thrilling forest trials, political schemes, and a riveting arranged marriage—all of which feel both organic and suspenseful

There’s a moment in the forest—won’t spoil it—but it broke me in the softest, most aching way. This book hurt, in all the best ways. It reminded me that growing up sometimes means losing things, even parts of yourself. But it also means finding your own strength, even in shadow

Mosa and Annora’s bond is at the center, and it’s beautifully written: two girls tied together by loyalty, memory, and something that feels almost sacred. But as their world unravels around them, it’s Mosa’s growing connection with Theron that hit me right in the chest.
Theron isn’t your typical love interest. He’s steady, observant, and wounded in his own way—but the way he sees Mosa, truly sees her, made me melt. There’s no instant spark, no dramatic declarations—just two people slowly circling each other through fear, secrets, and quiet trust. Every glance, every unspoken moment, felt electric. Their romance doesn’t interrupt the story—it deepens it.

Final Thoughts:
This is a quietly powerful fantasy—perfect for readers who love character-driven stories, morally grey magic, and deep emotional undercurrents. It’s a story about unraveling not just spells and secrets, but identity, loyalty, and what it means to truly stand beside someone—even when the world turns upside down.

⭐️⭐️⭐️️⭐️/ ️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Adina Chiles and Devon Thiele have continued the cottagecore love in their addition to The Enchanted Woods Cottagecore Collection. Unraveling Magic and Shadowed Pasts is the amazing story about two friends who are just as much soulmates as the love they each discover on their journeys. The world these two authors have created has the ability to infuse magic into almost anything and it brought a new and unique magic system to life. As much as I loved the romance aspects of this story, the friendship is what pulled me in and kept me intrigued. I couldn’t wait to find out what these FMCs would do for each other.

I couldn’t get enough of Mosa and Annora’s friendship throughout this book. From page one it is obvious they create a fierce duo. Each one brings different strengths to their friendship and they cause each other to thrive. As we get to know each of these amazing FMCs, it is evident they are both strong, independent, and love hard. When Annora goes missing, after a magical mishap, Mosa is determined to find her. The POVs in the story allow us to see how their individual journeys bond them and create their shared journey.

As each of their journeys bring them to interact with Theron and Brander, the romance that follows each of them is beautifully written and done. As each couple falls more and more, the story takes on a different feel that pulls you in even deeper. These men are wonderfully written and just as intriguing.

As you read, keep at it. It starts slow, but builds to a place you won’t want to put the book down. I could have handled a longer story as there were some parts that, although wrapped up nicely, seemed a bit rushed. All in all a wonderful addition to this series and both Adina and Devon wrote a beautiful story.

As always, review any author notes before reading.

What to Expect:

💜Hidden Royalty
🔥Reluctant Allies to More

I trully want to thank both the authors for choosing me to read this ARC.

My rating is actually 3,5 star, and I still don´t understand why I can´t add it like that on Goodreads

First off, the styles of writing of both authors, each writing from Mosa´s or Annora´s POV were perfectly complementing each other. It was seamless, warm and magical.
I loved the unique style of magic, that comes through the colors of clothing from its maker. I remember I was very confused at the beginning regarding the color magic and how the Ombra Kingdom was bound to the color purple, because it was mentioned briefly, and I think, it wouldn´t be too bad to stop or linger for a moment to explain these things into more detail.
I loved the friendship between Mosa and Annora, they were like sisters and together with the cozy vibes and magic and the overall story, I felt like It was another of the older Barbie movies. It reminded me so much of Barbie and The Diamond Castle movie so much and I´m here for it (no, really, I´m obsessed with older Barbie movies).
Each girl was later accompanied by her love interest. Mosa by Theron and Annora by Brander. I have to say, I would prefer Theron over Brander. But I felt like both relationship were so sudden. Mosa and Theron were good at the beginning, then something happened (during which I probably blinked or idk what), and they were handsy and I thought if I haven´t missed anything.
Annora and Brander, that was basically love at first sight. I feel like it wouldn´t hurt to give each couple more time to get to know each other. Physical attraction? Sure, but for me, it was too early for all of them to have such strong feelings in such a short time.
And now, I think this book could have been so much better, if it was longer. The whole book takes over three or four days. And for threats and obstacles the characters were presented with, I feel like it was anticlimatic, especially the ending. I don´t remember much from the kingdom of Ombra, other than it was gray and that there were these shadow creatures in some forest.
Overall, it was a nice, cozy read.

I had such a good time reading Unraveling Magic and Shadowed Pasts!

The story follows Mosa and Annora, two best friends living in a cozy sanctuary where designers use colour magic to create clothes infused with power. Honestly, I loved this magic system so much. The idea of dying enchantments into fabric was just so fun. It gave the book this really whimsical feel that made it stand out from other fantasy stories I’ve read.

Things take a turn when Mosa accidentally dyes a pair of gloves in a forbidden shade tied to the fallen kingdom of Ombra. From there, everything spirals: Annora gets pulled back into her royal roots, Mosa has to trek into dangerous forests with a broody huntsman, and suddenly the cozy life they knew is swapped out for secrets, political schemes, and the threat of war.

What really made this book work for me was the dual POV. Instead of focusing on two romantic leads (like you usually see), it’s told through the eyes of Mosa and Annora—two best friends. I don’t often come across fantasy stories that center friendship like this, and it felt so refreshing. Their bond gave the story so much heart.

On top of that, the whole book has this cottagecore fantasy vibe—soft, magical, and a little cozy, even when the stakes get high. It’s the kind of story that feels both comforting and adventurous at the same time.

Overall, I really enjoyed Unraveling Magic and Shadowed Pasts. If you’re into fantasy with unique magic, strong friendships, and just the right balance of cozy and dramatic, I definitely recommend picking it up.

I was completely absorbed into Unraveling Magic and Shadowed Pasts by Mila Aiden and Devon Thiele right away! Mosa and Annora are inseparable friends that live within a sanctuary that was built to protect those with designer Magic from the horrors of Ombra, a country that has gotten so greedy with Magic that it completely absorbs all Magic within it and is seeking out designers to create more. When Annora is kidnapped, without even a second thought about her own safety, Mosa immediately heads out to find her.
While on this journey we find out how strong Mosa is, and how quickly she falls in love with the man assisting her, Theron. While their bond happens quickly, it is very sweet.
Annora, on the other hand, has a few secrets that she didn't think was safe to tell her friend, and this secret gets her basically sold off in marriage to the prince of Ombra. I love how Annora takes something that could be traumatic and turns it into her own personal power and freedom. Brander, the prince of Ombra, is definitely more than meets the eye and expectations for the most feared kingdom. While Annora and Brander's love doesn't happen as quickly as her friends, there is definitely attraction at first sight! I love how these two compliment and strengthen each other.
This book is very fast paced and I would have loved for it to have lasted longer. I loved the unique Magic system that I had never seen before, the bond of the two main characters, and the immense power that comes out of their journey.

𝘜𝘯𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘤 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘥 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘴 is a heartwarming standalone fantasy filled with friendship, romance and adventure with a magical blend of cozy and dark elements.

The story begins with two friends who are navigating life together at the sanctuary until Annora is abducted by her father’s (the king) men and told he has arranged a marriage for her to the prince of a forbidden kingdom. Through fierce loyalty and love for her friend, Mosa sets out on a journey to find her. It is on this path that the two FMC find their path and find love. However, the FMCs find themselves going to war with a kingdom that has been their home for most of their lives.

A quick yet enchanting read. I love the two FMCs who have been friends for so long and once their lives start to unravel, they continue to be loyal and fierce. I love the unique magic system where designers (like Mosa and Annora) imbed magic into clothing. The two romances are super sweet and kick your feet swoony. A little to insta for me but I still ate it up. Also, I love how the prologue and the epilogue match up well together…. Perfection!

This story was unfortunately a major disappointment. While the premise is excellent and the magic system was really unique and a breath of fresh air, everything else fell flat for me. There are plot holes, the characters are underdeveloped, the pacing is all over the place, and the narrative voice is plagued with malapropisms and tense switches that constantly threw me out of the story. I ended up taking way, way longer to read this than I ought to have considering how short a read this actually is.

I should have probably stopped reading when the issues started getting irritating, but for the intriguing concept I pushed through to the end, only to be disappointed even more by the rushed ending and the very high stakes that were totally undermined by getting that HEA wrapped up with a little bow that had deus ex machina vibes rather than actually allowing the exceptionally high stakes to unfold properly.

All in all, it feels like the authors were overambitious with the double romance and trying to mash everything into a novel under 300 pages. There's also the issue that the series marketing indicated cozy vibes but I got nothing cozy out of this. It's a romantasy with tendencies to the epic - there are kingdoms to save and the world's magic to rescue, definitely not low-stakes hanging out in a cottage at the edge of the woods away from people and just getting on with daily life.

For this reason, I give this novel 2,5 stars and sincerely hope the authors revamp the story because there's a whole lot of potential mired in the bog.

I rather enjoyed this book. It is uncomplicated and more akin to a traditional fairy tale than the previous books in the Enchanted Woods Cottagecore Collection. There is one on-page sexual encounter using euphemistic language and one fade-to-black encounter, so I gave this book 3 chili peppers.

Summary: Two best friends, Mosa and Annora live at the Sanctuary designing magic imbued clothing to those who can afford it. The demand is high because so few people can design (put magic into objects) and some absorbers (people who can use the magic) spend it frivolously. When Annora is kidnapped, Mosa goes after her and the story gets interesting.

Opinion:
I enjoyed this book, Volume 4 in the Enchanted Woods Cottagecore Collection. It is much tamer than the previous 3, which sets it apart. The four main characters are well-developed across the storyline and the connections between them reads as believable. A lot happens in the last 5-10 chapters of the book, so I highly recommend reading through if you are tempted to stop.

Who do I recommend this to:
Young adult/New adult readers
Lovers of fairytales
Readers who like adventures in their fantasy
Readers of HEAs, slow burn romance, enemies to lovers, and forced proximity tropes

“I know that if we bind ourselves, I’ll have no chance against you. I would worship at your feet, even as you tore my heart out of my chest. I would grind it into the dust myself if it meant staying in your good graces.”

If this man doesn't stop saying things like this...

This book is for all my hungry readers who are craving something sweet with a heaping spoonful of whimsy, a hefty portion of cozy, and splash of high stakes and a sprinkling of spice.

I hope you came extra hunger because this book not only delivers you a dual POV, but you get the best pair of MFCs and MMCs.

Two best friends, more like sisters, are designers, and they create colorful and magical clothing.

Color has power. More power than you can imagine, and when the girls accidentally create the wrong color... nothing will ever be the same.

Our girls are separated, but their stories weave together as they find adventure, love, and a lot of colorful chaos.

This was so uniquely fun! The magic system was so intriguing that it honestly could fill multiple books, and I would read every single one.

I absolutely adored the dual perspectives and the two storylines. It was double the swoon, double the feels, double the happily ever after!

2.5⭐

I was fortunate to receive an ARC copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

This is a really warm and cosy fantasy story, with a unique magic system, four likeable main characters, and an interesting plot.

For me though, it felt too short for the amount of content. Every chapter there was a big twist or turn, and very little build up to it. It makes a change for me to say that I would have preferred *more* filler, but this is such a good story that I feel it deserves more. The writers are talented, but it feels like they've been too hesitant to reach for the stars. Reach for the stars guys! I want to know more about why the magic was taken away from characters. I want to see more than a chapter of Mosa and Theron just meeting each other before they fall madly in love. I want to see more of a quest to find the hidden magic. This story has SO much potential - bring it to life like it deserves and it'll be a massive hit.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review this book!

I received an advanced review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Unraveling Magic and Shadowed Pasts is a heartwarming and enchanting tale that follows best friends Mosa and Annora, who are designers that can bind magic into fabric. After accidentally creating forbidden magic, they are thrust onto separate paths, and embark on a journey that could alter their lives forever. This is a story about courage, friendships and self-discovery.

I loved every second of this book! The story’s magic system is unique and unlike anything I’ve read before. The true highlight though is Mosa and Annora’s friendship! They are two soft-hearted, gentle cinnamon rolls who would do anything for each other. Honestly, we can only hope to find a friendship like theirs.

This was such a cozy and delightful read! It was lighthearted and the perfect book to relax to! I cant wait to read more books from both authors.

If you’re looking for something cozy with fairytale vibes and cute romance (double romance in this book 💕), I highly recommend this one! ✨🌼

Annora and Mosa are best friends that live in what is known as a sanctuary where designers learn and hone their skills. Not merely designers of clothes, but designers who imbue fabric with color magic, creating clothing filled with power that wearers can draw on. This was probably my favorite aspect of the entire book, the magic system. It was so unique and really made it stand out compared to most "popular" fantasy books today.

All is well until Mosa unintentionally creates a forbidden color, a color of the fallen kingdom. This is where the story really takes off! The dual POV allows readers to follow both Annora and Mosa on different journeys filled with secrets, danger, and the true bond of friendship. Don't worry, there is some romance as well, for both FMCs.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and I want more! This is a standalone book but if I understand correctly, the this is a part of the Enchanted Woods Cottagecore Collection. This is a collection of 11 books with cottagecore themes. I think I will be looking more into the other books in this collection!

I enjoyed reading this book! I like the sort of magic in this book like the Mosa who is able to dye fabrics that will help with magic! Mosa and Annora are such best friends to read. The world we are given especially with such interesting magic abilities is really nice to read, it did keep me interested in it the whole time. If this was more then one book I would have read the entire thing honestly. One little mistake turns into a huge adventure for these girls. They also meet 2 men along the way and in that it is a race against time to save the kingdom from pending doom. I love the relationship Mosa and Theron start to develop. Also Theron being the love interest I feel he is a bit different from what you would expect which is a nice little change in love interests and just makes you love him more. Though Annora is have a love interest named Brander and that was love at first site with those two! Overall i love the cozy, cottagecore, strong relationships, and unique magic system fantasy story we are given with this!
I was given this as an ARC and this is my honest opinion.

This was just the type of book I needed during this outrageous heat wave. It took me back to those cozy autumn nights. It was truly like a warm embrace reading this book. I greatly enjoyed the dual pov which I know isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, however I appreciate hearing the inner dialogue of multiple characters throughout the story.

I couldn’t imagine a world without a certain color, I tried looking around my house as I was reading it and realized how much different things would look. Bravo to that creativity!! I enjoyed the world building, I’m definitely a sucker for expansive details and the foundation of the story.

If you are in the mood for a short, sweet, cozy read, I definitely would try this one. You will have a unique magic system, some instalove, golden retriever vibes, stubborn and resilient fmc. All and all, I enjoy it!

I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this book. This was a warm and cozy fantasy read. I adored the story and the writing. It's a dual pov with both fmc and their love interests. The magic was unique to me because I've never read a book with this kind of magic. The spice in this one is very low. There is a closed door and a very mild open door scene. I do wish Mosa and Theron, and then Annora and Brander had a bit more time to get to know each other before such strong feelings developed. Also I would've liked a bit of action/fighting during a certain scene (not gonna say which as to not spoil anything), it felt a tiny bit rushed but I understand the way it was written due to Annora getting what was missing from her. Overall, this was a cute, cozy and light read. I personally enjoyed this book tremendously.

This was a very unique and interesting book to read. I love a good magical system and the fact that this one was based on colors brought that uniqueness to the story.

Mosa and Theron were a great couple. I loved the dynamics between them. Then you have Annora and Brander and can we say ... the crazy social elite ... but in all the best ways that makes ypu want to learn more about them. These were four characters that were definitely memorable.

I loved this was a race to save the world from losing the colorful magical system. This was a short read for me but one that I enjoyed from start to finish. So for me personally, although this was different from anything I have read, it was a five star read.

This is a cute fantasy romance book with dual perspectives throughout. There are kingdoms that have color and designers who design and give things colors with the sewing happening. Mosa and Annora are the two perspectives in this book. Mosa is a designer with magic and Annora does the sewing. Annora gets kidnapped but not all is what it seems. Mosa goes after her thinking the kingdom of Ombra took her. Theron guides Mosa to Ombra. Annora is actually somewhere else and meets Brander who is the prince of Ombra. They learn of some misdeeds by someone. There is some closed door romance. Mostly fantasy with some romance. Such a cute, cozy, easy read. I loved the characters and the story. I hope to read more about these characters.

This was such a good read!!!!!! You have 2 FMC who are best friends and 2 MMC. While the girls(both are seamstresses but only one has magic in her blood) are at the sanctuary one gets kidnapped by her father and her best friend goes looking for her. The Men one a prince and one a hunter, the prince is there to get his bride and the hunter is with the best friend trying to find her. The twists and turns in this book have you feeling like your on a rollercoaster. The secrets, the characters, and the spice is beyond what i imagined. This book is pure magic and i cant wait for you all to read it!!!!!

This story felt so like a warm hug but also full of so many turns. The magic system and the different kingdoms were so interesting and fun! The world building had a lot of information. I loved that it was dual POV it added so much to coziness and enjoyment.

What bothered me was that the writing felt off at times. As if someone else was speaking for the character? It would take me out of the story.

It was also hard to fully grasp my interest at first, at 45% is when I got my interest. (The world was interesting and I loved the idea which is why I kept reading). The ending felt anticlimactic for everything that lead up to it.

Thank you to the authors the ARC!

I enjoyed this unique take on magic. I liked the idea that different colors control different things and in different kingdoms. I loved the sisterly relationship between Mosa and Annora. I absolutely loved the first few chapters that establish their bond and history. For me, it got a little slow after that but then picked up toward the last quarter.

This is told in a dual POV of the ladies. Both of them are loveable. I was pleasantly surprised by Prince Brander. He's a decent guy.

I recommend this for fantasy romance lovers. I'd rate it one pepper on the spice scale. It is open door but not very descriptive and only 2 short scenes. The story has fun cottagecore vibes.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Annora and Mosa are dedicated designers at the Sanctuary, quietly creating beauty. That is until the pair stumble across a forbidden, ancient magic. When Annoras past catches up with her, she's stolen away in the dead of night without a trace. In a bold show of loyalty, Mosa embarks on a daring quest to bring her friend home.

I really enjoyed this story. It’s cozy and comforting with just the right amount of shadow and danger. Heartwarming at its core, it’s a beautiful, epic reminder that friendship can become the strongest kind of family. The writing is so vivid it unfolds like a carefully crafted film, with every scene rich in atmosphere and emotion.

I adored this entry to the Enchanted Woods Cottagecore Collection! Thank you so much to the authors for the ARC. While I received this for free, all thoughts are my own.

The magic system was really neat! I like the idea of imbuing clothes with magic energy for others to use, and I would love to see that utilized more in other magic systems.

Mosa and Annora were great POVs. I appreciated that the focus was more on their friendship and connection. The romances are fine, but that best friendship you would do anything for is currently being overlooked in fantasy.

Of the two romances, I think I enjoyed Annora's more. Mosa's romance grew on me, but Annora's just hit all the right notes for me. I also appreciated that it was low spice.

My only sadness is that we won't get anymore of Mosa/Annora's story. I would have liked to see more of their adventures, and ABSOLUTELY want more in this world with the magic system.

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into Unravelling Magic and Shadowed Pasts by Adina Chiles and Devon Thiele, but it absolutely did not let me down! This was such a fantastic fantasy read that pulled me in from the start.

I loved the characters, especially Annora and Mosa—their friendship was one of my favorite parts of the story. The journey this book takes you on was magical, emotional, and full of moments that kept me turning the pages. And that ending? I absolutely loved it!

My only complaint is that it’s over—I truly wish this was a series because I could read about these characters every single day. ✨📖
