K. G. Bolingbroke's Nocturne is so much more than a historical romance.
It is a story veiled in mysteries, secrets, hidden agendas, tales of the known and the unknown, wrapped in the enchanting shroud of folklore, myths, and stories we thought impossible. But are they?
Based on historical events and (some) historical figures, K.G. has managed to find the perfect balance between facts and fiction. You can almost taste the mystery of Romanian surroundings and feel the emotions oozing from the pages. K.G. has taken her time to research the history and culture of the early Renaissance period, making this story so real yet so vast in its mysteriousness.
She truly did the history, the culture, and Romania justice while portraying a tale of an arranged marriage veiled in secrets, darkness lurking around each corner, and the real imminent threats aiming to disturb a brittle peace.
The story of a Habsburg princess marrying the illusive Romanian prince amid the Ottoman threat is filled to the brim with emotions, layered characters, history written by victors and often clouded from facts. Above all, it is a story of a love shyly peaking its head through arranged marriages, darkness, and pre-instilled conceptions.
You need to read Nocturne to fully grasp its intensity and heaviness. To fully immerse yourself in the story full of myths and folklore, something that Romania has an abundance of. Romania offers so much inspiration in its lore and history, and it takes someone like K.G. to breathe new life into stories some of us may already know.
Trust K.G., trust me, and give Nocturne a chance. Its melody certainly won't lull you to sleep, but its hauntingly beautiful notes will offer you an eerily enchanting experience of a lifetime.
I feel honored to be on K.G.'s team, to read and love this story from the prologue's first sentence until the book's last word. The story is far from over, making me giddy with expectations of what is to come.
Nocturne by K.G Bolingbroke is a gothic enriched historical romance with spine tingling mysteries, 15th century Romanian culture, enchanting folklore, and so much more.
This is, by far, the best debut I have ever read. I was engrossed in the novel from the get-go and read half of it in the first sitting. I found the writing to be completely enamoring and immersive in a way that felt like I was right there with the fmc during her journey and hardships. The characters are developed and the setting is clear through the immaculate descriptions. There was also a thrilling and suspenseful aspect that fit the theme. I found myself grimacing along with the characters during some parts.
The historical fiction aspect was so incredible. I could really tell the author took the time to research the period and history. As a history buff myself, I was completely awed every page.
This book was intense, romantic, thrilling, and awe inspiring. The ending had be screaming. I will be sat for the follow up, hands down. I will be looking into anything else this author writes in the future.
Thank you so much, K.G. Boilingbroke and R&R Book Tours for the review copy and the opportunity! I will continue to cherish it.
This review is kind of unhinged and might have contain lesser spoilers, so read at your own risk. It might also involve unhealthy obsessions and yearning, from yours truly.
I rarely write “detailed” reviews like this, but when I do … It means the books changed me in a way, and matters deeply to me.
Sooooo … Book 2 when???
I found this book on Instagram at first. It was the cover that I saw first, and then the title, and I was like … Hello? Who are you? What are you about? And then I read the name Vlad the Impaler. Are you kidding me?! My favourite historical person? (Don’t ask me why I love him this much, but I do and I don’t care. I am actually getting a tattoo of his face on my arm in February if that says something). And I knew just then that I needed this book and that it would become a favourite of mine by only reading the synopsis. So, I got it. The book got me the second I opened it and I could basically not put it down. You can tell K. G. Bolingbroke has an absolutely healthy interest (like me) in Romanian folklore, gothic castles and settings, and of course, Vlad the Impaler. 🖤 If I already did not want to go to Romania on a castle and vampire safari, I really want to now. And you know what? I will. 2026 is my year. The author did such a good job on researching for this book, as well as creating her own story and taking creative liberties. To me, it all felt realistic and that I was walking the hallways of Bran Castle myself. And the folklore??? I’ve since I first read Twilight, been obsessed with vampires and the different folklores surrounding them, and the Romanian has just taken root inside of me together with the Vlad the Impaler is Dracula myth, thing. You know. Let me not get started on the slow burn tho, aaaaah! I was on THE EDGE all the time. The mystery surrounding Vlad, his past and family. Everything. I was screaming on the inside each damn time Shoshana and Vlad were close to each other and I felt the yearning in every fibre of my body, and still … Still, they pushed each other away. Which makes me want to write about the characters as well, because without them, there would not be a story to tell.
The characters Shoshana – the princess consort, daughter of the Holy Roman Empire. I really loved this character. Her beauty, everything I’ve ever wanted in my life. Black hair and pale eyes. A beautiful husband who might also be a vampire … Girl, I envy you big time. Vlad - *sigh* (in a good way of course). This man. This man … I’d open my very veins for him. Because this man would do everything for the woman he loves and cares for. He is a 10, but he is a vampire. Which means he is actually a 100. Simon – this guy … after that one scene closer to the end of the book … I could not stand him anymore. What he did was unforgivable and it ruined his character for me. I don’t know if I felt like that scene was needed or necessary in any way. Yeah, I am conflicted about this, but it is what it is. It did not ruin the book for me at all, happily. Did he redeem himself in the end? That is another discussion, but still … I think he is not the man you’d want to marry and have children with tbh. Keep your distance. Vlad (Daddy) the Impaler – aaaaah, like O M G. I was 100% sure this marriage of Shoshana and Vlad was the actual Impaler himself, so I was pretty surprised when I learned that it was his son she was going to marry. The way he was spooking around Shoshana all the time … The huge bat flapping its wings around the castle at night. Impale me now, Daddy. Just do it. Okay, so the climax was so good and I was also on the edge of my seat here all the time. I’d also open a vein for this man, just kidnap me already. As I've already said, I'm tattooing your face on my arm this february and it will stay with me till I die. (And when tht happens, I hope I wake up as a vampire).
There were more characters, but these really impacted me in ways.
Other thoughts - If you made it this far to this review, I salute you dear soldier of my weird obsessions and dreams. My ONLY complaint (which isn’t really a complaint at all, but), I wish there were more vampire action all the way through, but the climax and ending gave me what I was craving for the most part, and guess what? There will actually be a second book, so I will definitely get my fill there. I needed it yesterday.
At least, thank you so much K. G. Bolingbroke for existing and writing this masterpiece of a book. You changed my personality and life. And I am so sorry if I scarred you for life with this unhinged review, but it was all my own thoughts and came straight from my heart. 🖤 I will continue to rave about this book for the rest of my life.
I absolutely devoured this book! The aesthetics of 15th century Romania, overlaid with K.G. Bolingbroke's beautifully told story had me in a chokehold until the very end. It's obvious throughout the story that research and detail were a high priority for the author. The political background of the time period, the Romanian strigoi folklore, Shoshana and the Voivode's relationship...it is all woven together so well. My only - ONLY - complaint is that I wanted more. I could have very happily read another 100 pages of this story. Although, this is not really a complaint about the story at all...I was transported to another time and place in the best ways possible. I just want to read more by this author.
Thank you, K.G. Bolingbroke, for being such an amazing storyteller and the chance to read this as an ARC.
I found Nocturne at a local book fair. I love supporting local, but was also a bit hesitant about the indie authors there. Nocturne was definitely the standout choice and I couldn't wait to get started reading. What an incredible surprise! It was one of those books I just wanted to devour, yet at the same time slow down and enjoy the journey. The writing is beautiful. It's intelligent, thoughtful, and atmospheric while still being accessible. The characters are relatable and felt so real to me. I would have liked a little more development of the romance, as it felt painstakingly slow. Honestly, my favorite book of 2025. I hope she writes more! A new book would be an automatic buy for me.
This was an artful blend of historical gothic fiction and dark fantasy. Our narrator, Shoshana, is a dutiful Austrian princess sent into an arranged marriage with the mysterious Prince of Romania, Vlad. And like any deliciously gothic tale, there’s an epic castle backdrop that feeds the dark historical lover in my soul. As Shoshana navigates her new role as a foreign bride, she finds herself caught in a web of secrets tied to her husband’s infamous lineage—his father being none other than Vlad the Impaler. Though supposedly dead, Vlad’s shadow still looms large over the castle, seeping into her dreams and daily life. The ominous atmosphere is thick, and while Shoshana tries to survive and find her footing, there’s no denying the supernatural weight pressing down around her. I really loved how the author kept Vlad (the son) mysterious, because let’s be honest—if you give us a morally grey hottie, we’re going to get invested. This was definitely a slow-burn gothic romance, though I do wish there were more lighthearted or tender moments between Shoshana and Vlad to break the tension. Still, I rooted for Shoshana and really felt for her through her losses and personal journey. The ending was climactic and satisfying, with an opening for another book. I think this is perfect for gothic lovers, especially those who enjoy Dracula lore with a romantic twist.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Shoshana, the eldest daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor, gets engaged to the Prince of Romania. Her role was to help her husband secure a political alliance, preparing for the rise of conflicts between Romania and the Ottoman Empire. The prince that she married is the son of the infamous Vlad, the Impaler, who previously ruled the kingdom with atrocious, wicked and brutal cruelty.
When she lives her life in Romania, she experiences some supranatural incidents and makes her wonder if it is worth it to put her life at risk in the first place for Romania, or she should come back to her father’s kingdom for her own safety.
The events and vibes are the story is dark ominous, like Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Deep, dark, mysterious, like dark supernatural detective mode and it is really captivating!
But, don’t worry, the story uses a comfortable writing style and I enjoy it. Also, the story's plot feels very smooth, especially when it starts escalating at a fast pace.
There is a little bit of suspense, and then it changes to a fast thriller, especially in several chapters towards the end of the story. I almost didn’t realize the plot twist was happening because of this surprisingly change story pace, and it changed from slow to fast and became slow again. It kept repeating very often.
I love the author's presentation of women's empowerment in this story. It shows that Shoshana is involved very deeply in the Romanian Kingdom’s economic and political strategy. I enjoy this story. I just needed a map to help me navigate the event that was happening in it. I will definitely read the next book!
Nocturne was shrouded in suspense and mystery, amidst an absolutely gorgeous scenery and deceitful pleasantries. It is indeed slow paced, Shoshana making the long travel to her new, stranger of a husband and trying to establish herself in his community, being stressed and uneasy in the light of suspicious occurrences happening. Yet, I could not stop reading, I was entranced. It’s a slow burn, truly a slow burn. I wanted to dive into the pages, appear in the story and shake some sense and urgency in both Shoshana and the Voivode. She was funny, she made me laugh a couple of times and him, he was so composed and elusive.
The author did take some historical liberties in her book that benefitted the story telling, some ressources are stated at the end of it, which I will gladly take a look at. I cannot stress enough how I loved the atmosphere and the historical parts, as it is an integral part of Nocturne in itself.
Thank you to K.G. Bolingbroke for the arc. The ending!? Tell me there’s more.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25 /5
🩸Historical fiction 🩸Vampires (strigoi) 🩸Slow burn (I mean it) 🩸Slow paced 🩸Suspense
I'm so in love with this book. The aesthetics of it are breathtaking and the attention to detail in this book is astounding. You're immersed in this detailed world and time period that feels understood and researched on by the author. The suspense and mystery throughout the story keeps you stuck to the book without noticing how long it's been. I was head over heels for Vlad, I know I was supposed to be spooked or scared of him but... I mean.. 🤷🏽♀️ the same goes to Simon. I know, maybe something is wrong with me.
Other than that, the FMC, is so strong and empowering in this story. She stands her ground and is aware of who and what is being said around her. God, the ending had me nervous and I just couldn't believe I was on the last page and there wasn't more for me to read. I'm definitely continuing this journey to book two and CANNOT WAIT.
I am OBSESSED with this book. The amount of research KG put into this novel to add historical accuracy is incredible. I found myself so engrossed in those details and felt trasported to 15th century Romania. (I’m longing to find some wine like the Romanian variety described in the novel!)
The prologue demands your attention from the very beginning and from there holds it with Shoshana’s struggle between fear and attraction. There’s political intrigue, a super slow burn romance, conflicting emotions and intense moments of danger.
Between the beautiful prose and the expert research applied, you don’t want to miss this novel!
Brilliantly written and beautifully executed. K.G. Bolingbroke weaves a tapestry of horror and historical fiction that would appeal to readers of either genre. As a male, I'm not sure that I was the target demographic for the book, but as a fellow writer, I was wowed by Bolingbroke's talents. The gorgeous prose sweeps you along to a compelling and riveting end. Compulsively readable. Highly recommended.
There is no shortage of vampire-related books (and movies and TV shows). However portrayed, the blood-feeding creatures hold a powerful sway in our collective imagination. Distinguishing your own vampire tale from the rest is a daunting challenge.
I think this author succeeds because of how they tell the story. The protagonist is the fictitious daughter of a historical Holy Roman Emperor who weds the second son and successor of the infamous Vlad the Impaler. Alone but for her nursemaid in a beautiful but increasingly sinister foreign country, she investigates her husband and his family even as she seeks annulment and a return home. Tension simmers, backs off, then simmers again before boiling over into a thrilling conclusion.
The pages luxuriate with the fruits of historical research and gothic sensibility. Yes, you can throw a stick and hit 50 vampire novels, but Nocturne should be at or near the top of your list.
This isn't something that I would usually read but I decided to give it a chance and it didn't disappoint!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶
It was an interesting read with a lot of attention to detail about the history. You can see how much research the author put into it. It is beautifully written and full of beautiful scenery, historical facts and suspense.
I was hooked from the beginning, I just couldn't put it down and the ending left me needing more! If you enjoy a slow-burn romance in a dark medieval setting with strong female characters, tension and political intrigue, then this book is for you!
“There are times in life where you find yourself on a path that suddenly diverges. You find yourself completely halted, unsure which path to take, knowing that either choice will completely alter your life. Both are just as enticing yet equally daunting. The most intimidating part of it is that you are entirely aware of it as well - that the path you take will change the course of your life forever, but you must make the choice. There is no turning back.”
I am officially giving Nocturne a standing ovation because this story gave me goosebumps and I am absolutely obsessed and love it with every ounce of my being! 🥹❤️👏 I could not put this book down and I read it in less than a day. This book was like taking a step in a completely different world. It takes place in the 1500s with Princess Shoshana leaving her country to go marry a man that she has never met: the mysterious and enigmatic Prince of Romania! 🤭 The SLOW BURN in this book is a major one with so much tension, banter, and longing and the chemistry is *chef’s kiss* 👩🍳💋The side characters truly are amazing and there are so many characters with so much depth and soul that have touched my heart! 🥹 There also is so much mystery and I have so many theories! 🕵️♀️ Lastly, that ending has me in shock and I need book two now! 😱🙀🙈🤯

Book Review: “Nocturne” by KG BOLINGBROKE Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
This book was a journey. I truly wish there was more of Shana and Vlad tbh. 😭😭😭😭 anyway, I’m not here to pour out my lamentations to you.
Book Quote: “I don't intend to turn back now because of your fear.”
Tell me you're a badass FMC without telling me you're a badass FMC!!! I've waited for this book forever!!! I knew it would be worth every second of my time. For optimal experience 😂 I recommend reading this book at night, late in the night. The vibe from the author’s page is indeed what the book is about. My word! The entire prologue had me clutching the walls of my heart high up in my throat. This book is what it calls itself to be!!! My my my! NOCTURNE!!! Eek 😱 I live for fine writing, the kind that tickles your mind with eeriness and raises the goosies on your arms for more reasons than one. KG does that. I loved this book so much, I BECAME SPEECHLESS FROM EVERYTHING. From the PROLOGUE, I was awed to the end of this masterpiece. If I could recommend it more than just once, I would. You’re in for the best chills known to mankind; the good, curious and ticking kind of chills. The Voice slowly creeped into my mind and took refuge. I loved everything about the sensations it brought. “The voice that stirred sensations within me that I had never encountered before.” Simon, is vibes 😂 annoying but cutely funny 😂. “An arrow shot has a chance of landing somewhere, and you miss all of the shots you do not take.” He is relentless. And yeah…I love to hate the man. 😭 The subtle plot twist. The historical facts and context…everything about this book, I highly recommend. It’s the kind of book I read to the end and was so mad that there wasn’t more of it. I WANTED MORE!!!
Okay this one absolutely blew me away, I'm still in awe over this story! K.G. did an amazing job writing this beautiful book & the research that went into this one- so incredible👏 Nocturne was the perfect blend of historical fiction, romance & Romanian folklore. This one kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time! I couldn't put it down, I was intrigued by the first few pages, the atmosphere in Nocturne is *chefs kiss* This story follows the eldest daughter of the Holy Roman Empire & the mysterious Prince of Romania, in their arranged marriage and oh my god is the tension & slow burn so perfect! This story was filled with so much mystery, secrets galore, suspense, politics, twists and an absolutely beautiful gothic atmosphere 🖤 Every one of the characters is so well written, and K.G. does such a great job at making you feel as though you're in that era and in the story with them. By the end of the book, I was dying for more! 🙌
I highly recommend this one, especially if you enjoy: 🖤Historical fiction 🖤Vampires 🖤Mystery 🖤Romance 🖤Arranged marriage 🖤Folklore
Ok listen this is not something I would normally pick for myself as historical fiction is not my thing…BUT I must say it did surprise me more than I thought!
It was a slow start for me but as I kept reading it turned into a dark, immersive, and beautifully unsettling read that lingers long after the final page. The atmosphere is thick with tension and mystery, pulling you into a world where shadows feel alive and every choice carries weight. The characters are layered with just enough mystery to keep you guessing.
It’s amazing to know how much research was done by the Author that allowed her to use the time and places from the past and turn it into this cool vampire story!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶️/5 I told myself that this year I would expand my reading and dive into books that I wouldn’t normally reach for. This is one of my first ever historical fiction reads and Nocturne did not disappoint! The way I was pulled back in time and lead through an amazingly wild ride full of a chilling history, deep rooted mystery, and a dash of romance. I never wanted it to end! The time and detail that was put into this book is clear to see it’s truly phenomenal! I would definitely recommend this especially if you are dipping your toes into historical fiction like me!
• Horror Fantasy • Historical romance • Arranged Marriage • Slow Burn Romance • Political Intrigue • Gothic Mystery
If you enjoy slow-burn romance full of tension, a dark, magical medieval setting, strong yet realistic female characters, political intrigue with a touch of the supernatural, a thick, gothic atmosphere,
Then Nocturne is an absolute MUST for your wishlist! Personally, I gave it a solid 5 ⭐ It felt like a magical journey full of secrets, forbidden love, and addictive mystery.
I loved this book! From the beginning to end, it is a masterpiece. A great read if you love historical fiction. She really built the world around you with great attention to detail for the time period. The ending had me wanting more of these characters.
Read this book if you like reading works from Philippa Gregory but would like some vampire fantasy mixed in with a gothic vibe.
I am always a sucker for historical fiction (The Lady of The Rivers by Philippa Gregory) so no surprise here with a Dracula based novel. Love how the author brought in some true historical facts to line up her story with true and fictional characters. This book had me feeling all the feels (tears, grief, joy and thrill). Beautifully written and definitely need more of Shana and Vlad!
Fantastic read! Loved the setting and story! But what I loved most was the characters as they are very fleshed out with great detail and depth which really made the book feel unpredictable and exciting, I really enjoyed this book!
✧ Historical Fiction ✧ Romanian mythology ✧ Arranged/political marriage ✧ Slow burn ✧ Vampires
How I love historical fiction. It truly takes its own place in my heart, as does Romanian history of Vlad the Impaler (to be more specific - his son - in this book) - the Voivode of Wallachia? I’m so in. Romanian mythology is another thing I truly love, because the image of the modern vampire was created based on the Strigoi.
The relationship between Shoshana and Vlad is very smooth. She didn't fall into actual deep hatred just because their marriage was only political.
But despite this, I love seeing their union as a partnership for their countries, since they both demonstrated their concern at this matter. It actually started out more as a platonic friendship, and the pacing unfolds with a most slow-burn manner.
And... shall we talk about that ending? Please give me the second book, I need it now. I genuinely enjoyed all the tension there!
Nocturne is a masterpiece! From the cover, to the chapter headers, the characters, to the historical details - K.G. brought an entire culture and time period to life in a beautiful and intriguing way. The prologue is gripping and hooks you from the very first sentence.
I have thought about this story and the characters nonstop since I finished the beta read a while back and I’m so excited for everyone to read it.
Nocturne is a historical fiction set in Romania in the late 1400's. This story follows the Roman Emperor's eldest daughter Shoshana, and her arranged marriage to the Prince of Romania for political gain. This book is filled with beautiful and very descriptive landscape and scenery, historical facts, suspense, and a slow burn that will have you cursing. Lets not forget the best part, vampires!
Soshana juggles this arranged marriage and her unease and suspicions of the family she has married into while trying to keep alliances with her father in Austria and new alliances with Hungary. This was such a fun read with so much detail on the history. You can the the author put in so much research. I am a sucker for vamipres and this book did not disappoint. I was hooked from the prologue and once I was on the slow burn train, I had to ride it out. The long ride was so worth it and the ending left me craving more.
"Your eyes are so silver, it's almost as if they contain the light of the moon wothin them. I have never seen anything like it."
🥀I have received an ARC of this book and I'm willingly leaving this review🥀
Welcome to gothic Romania. I never thought I would read a retelling of a legend from my country written by somenone from the U.S.A., but here I am and call me impressed.
The author did a fantastic work of creating a cohesive story by putting together both historical facts and fantastical myths. She took a historical figure shrouded in mistery and legend and birthed a beautiful gothic story. Set in Medieval Romania, the story is told through the eyes of Princess Shoshana, who has to marry Voievod Vlad, the son of Vlad Țepeș, for political reasons. Once she arrives at Bran Castle, odd things are starting to happen to her. Little by little, page by page, the tension picks up crescendo. A small whisper, a ghost from the past, political struggles, tensions with the enemies, late night walks by the candlelight in a haunted castle...
As a romanian, I'm proud of what K.G. Bolingbroke managed to create. It's not easy to take a real historical figure that has so many misconceptions told about, use those misconceptions in a way that has the reader guessing of what is real and not and at the end have a beautifully intricate story... but she did it and she did it in a fantastical way. My romantic heart would've loved for Shoshana and Vlad to have spent more time together as a couple. I don't mean spicy scenes, but romantic ones, to really grasp more of the feelings they start to have for each other, especially near the end. But that is my only criticism, if you could even call it that.
All in all, I really loved this book and I declare myself a fan of the author. Thank you for trusting me with an ARC.
This book grabs you in the most subtle and irrevocable manner and before you know it you end up in the wildest ride.
Going in, it feels like an understated historic novel, but you always feel this subtle Gothic undertone. As you’re reading about this beautiful, poised, educated, smart and strong princess, and her very enigmatic is the European Voivode husband, your skin prickles constantly with fear and awareness, and you are permanently slightly on edge waiting to see what comes next.
Prince Vlad is such a mystery through this whole book, but somehow he still manages to completely mesmerize and scenario.
The slow burn is so slow but so delicious. Once again it is so subtle you almost think you’re imagining the attraction between the characters.
Then all of a sudden, everything happens and you’re in for the ride of your life.
I admire so much the work put into this book and as a Romanian I am both honored and flattered by this authors interest in our culture in history. I can personally attest to how much research went into the story and while reading it, there were so many passages that took the back me to places that I visited or moments in my life growing up.
Some passages reminded me of old Romanian historical movies, others reminded me of my grandmother‘s house, full of lovely, handmade tapestries and objects, while others reminded me of historical locations in my country. The author’s words captured all of these places also well. And all dimensions of Romanian mythology were just chefs kiss.
I am also very grateful to the way she managed to portray the love and respect we have as a nation for a ruler that did so much for our country back then, while pop culture just know him as a vampire. I am so excited for the next installment in the story, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Thank you for the ARC KG - sorry it took me so long to read it.
Nocturne is a beautifully written and very well researched historical fiction with elements of fantasy, romance & horror. The entire book is filled with such a well thought out balance of politics, mystery and myths / folklore.
Following an arranged marriage agreement, the daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor leaves her home in Austria with her handmaid Helene and travels to start her new life in Romania as the wife of Prince Vlad, only when she arrives, he’s nowhere to be seen, giving him 3 weeks to appear before she leaves to head back home away from the conflict at the boarders of The Ottoman Empire.
Princess Shoshana is the perfect depiction of a Princess, she is smart, well brought up, has excellent ideas and is fierce. Whilst she might not be like “modern” Princesses and be a warrior, is fierce and she is patient and she loves deeply for those who love her.
Prince Vlad id a wonderful mystery, shadowed in contradictions placed there by himself, just when you think you have figured him out, he goes in and shocks you. He is calculating and tries to be a fair and much kinder ruler than previous rulers have been whilst also ensuring no one takes his kindness and changes for weakness.
The prologue had me gripped from the first sentence. It was the perfect start to the book and I hope something that we will continue to delve into in book 2?
Overall I am in awe of this book, I’ve been enthralled by it chapter by chapter, page by page, I have felt mystery and sorrow and happiness during my read and I think everyone should give this book a try because you will be left wanting more.
“...he glanced up from his writing. ‘Good evening.’” For me, this was one of many favourite lines from “Nocturne” because of its insinuative humour. In truth, this is not a humourous novel, though it has multiple moments of entertaining banter. It also has everything you could want in a historical fiction: political intrigue, gothic eeriness and horror, mystery, and murder. Its hypnotic musical interludes and gripping incidents serve to further its lure.
The contrast of the four-day wedding festivities with everyday life--Princess Soshana tiptoing around the castle with only a single candle to light her way--contributes to the dreamy quality of this book. The setting, the mysterious prince, and strange sounds and events contribute to the dreamy quality (or is it a nightmare?)
“Nocturne” is a fascinating and gothic masterpiece, reminiscent of 1800s gothic fiction. The research that went into it is staggering and admirable. Set aside time to read this in a sitting, because you will want to succumb to this thrillingly creepy and deliciously sensual reading experience.
