Dying was supposed to be rather final, but the Abyss has other plans for Hayden.
Waking up with the memories of his own murder wasn’t fun, but Hayden’s made it out of his first invasion all the same! He claimed his victories, suffered his defeats, and found himself outperforming the other recruits in the invasion of Berlis. Now, he’s earned the right to pursue the goal every demonic recruit yearns ascension.
Unfortunately, before he can become his very best demonic self, he’s going to need to earn a permanent posting, steal a whole lot more souls, and stop his mind from unraveling.
Easy, right? Well, maybe it would have been, if several high-ranking members of the Legion of Torment didn’t have it out for his mortal self. Still, with allies of his own, Hayden’s set on proving his worth across the sandy battlefields of Lagyel.
Enjoyed the book but wasn't as good as the first one.
I personally didnt like the new invasion world, missed the humanity of the first world.
Was getting annoyed with the self hate/doubt hes going through, cant he just embrace being sort of bad?
This installment was more about his acession progress and his weapon growth, but I missed him examining souls for skills. On that note, mid way through the book he obtained 3 potential magic user souls from Jinn during main Tree battle while they were distracted, and no mention at all after that about them containing anything useful.
Annoyed after Another big battle soul reaped from Flame General Jinn, then taken from him, only mentions it once, like you not really going to ask for that? Like I understand turning over Golem souls because they were tasked to get them, but that general was fair game. I know it taints his soul so we'll see more next book about it.
Does alot of magic core growth becoming an archmage but througout the book doesn't learn spells but wind slash? Same issue with his partner, she becomes and archmage level as well, but no mention of casting anything. I know they have knowlege that it may be useless against Jinn's, but no attempts? Or against other things? The Grimoires seem pretty empty as hell lol
Still enjoyed the book

I’m really enjoying this series. Normally more into heroes than anti-heroes, but I’m liking this one. The struggles he faces are interesting, and the progression is fun to watch.
I really enjoying it when a character has multiple magic systems or paths they have to improve on as well, and I like this one.
I hope he ends up needing more to work on as well, because seeing the MC improve is a lot of fun.
Seeing him at the same time gather some friends and find ways to keep himself together really adds to the book.
While I liked the book mostly, even if he does seem to waste most his time instead of practicing magic or anything else. Like he's so focused on ascension now he's not even tried to gain better combat skills from souls.
The fact that his power seems to be leaning towards being a depressed whiny little crying child is sorta pathetically boring. Why would I want to read a book about a grown man whining woe is me and I feel bad about myself, all the time? That is not a fun book to read. That's a , can I slap him in the face and tell him to get over it? Seriously he comes off as a 14 year old boy in an emo phases who goes on and on about how bad everything is and how worthless he is.
If the next book is all about him whining about how he deserves nothing. I'm done with the series. As much as I like the setting and moral viewpoints of his actions. Not wanting to read a series about the MC self hating all the time. Had enough of that whiny self loathing BS with 'Who Fights with Monster's' later books.
So if a character's who main shtick is self hate, then this might not be for you. If you don't mind it, this is still good series. IF you want to risk it and see if he pulls up his big boy pants and actually can handle his own baggage. Then press on and hope for the best.
