Owen Black’s life is defined by discipline, duty, and the secrets of his past. As the commander of a hidden mountain compound, he protects a brotherhood of ex-soldiers—men who, like him, were subjected to experimental drugs that left them with extraordinary abilities and made them targets. Love isn’t part of his mission, nor is it something he believes he deserves.
Grace Lane creates beauty with her hands—beadwork, flower arrangements, and the occasional mended heart. When she meets the stoic, gravel-voiced man, something about his guarded eyes calls to her creative spirit. She wants to bring color to his world, even if it means stepping outside her comfort zone to pursue him.
But Owen’s world is more dangerous than Grace could imagine. After their connection deepens, he’s forced to reveal the the men on the mountain were experimental subjects, tortured and transformed, now hiding from those who would exploit them. Their enemies would stop at nothing—even targeting an innocent baby—to reclaim what they believe belongs to them.
As Grace falls deeper in love with Owen, she must decide if she can embrace his complicated reality and the risks that come with it. And Owen must determine if he can let love into his carefully controlled world without compromising the safety of everyone he’s sworn to protect.
Be prepared for incredible men and women, an adorable baby and indomitable hope as these war veterans take a chance on a new location. And new love...

NY Times and USA Today Bestselling author J.M. Madden writes compelling romances between 'combat modified' military men and the women who love them. J.M. Madden loves any and all good love stories, most particularly her own. She has two beautiful children and a husband who always keeps her on her toes.
J.M. was a Deputy Sheriff in Ohio for nine years, until hubby moved the clan to Kentucky. When not chasing the family around, she's at the computer, reading and writing, perfecting her craft. She occasionally takes breaks to feed her animal horde and is trying to control her office-supply addiction, but both tasks are uphill battles. Happily, she is writing full-time and always has several projects in the works. She also dearly loves to hear from readers! So, drop her a line. She'll respond.
Owen Black is commander of a hidden mountain compound, populated by ex-soldiers who were subject to experimental drugs. Grace Lane owes the local flower shop and is an interior designer on the side.
The first in a new series from the Dogs of War, this is Foxhole, a newly constructed, actually still a WIP, self-sustaining safe compound located high in the NC mountains. Cap'n Black or Owen, has been in charge from ground up. His trips to the idyllic quaint, maybe quirky little town down at the base has led him to a virago named Grace, indescribable as to everything she is and does, they both certainly feel the spark, no enhancements needed on that. However Owen, the overachiever, worries how Grace will react if she ever comes up the mountain and interacts with the men there. A perfect introduction to all the inhabitants of Foxhole, with bits of their injuries due to Spartan, is at a Christmas feast. All the feels all at once, Grace didn't know how to feel (neither did I). The anger at what had been done to them and by whom, the overwhelming sadness she felt for each, but yet she felt happy at their commaraderie as a family. Misfits like in Rudolf. Perfect timing, this Christmas story. An HEA that made me LOL, typical Owen and Grace fashion. I fell into this journey and really didn't want to come out. I'm ready for more Foxhole romance for the guys!
New location and start of a new branch in the Dog of War series. Aiden and Angela want more for their daughter Fallen than being stuck inside a condo for fear of someone taking their gifted daughter. They decide to move to the new compound in North Carolina that is near a small quaint little town.
We get lots of time with Aiden and Angela but there is a secondary story/romance within. Owen Black has been in charge of getting Foxhole built from the ground up. Making sure its secure along with being self-sustainable. He is also in charge of other soldiers who were tortured and experimented on. He has never thought finding love would even be a possibility for him even though he longs for a woman named Grace in town.
Grace loves the little town she lives in. She is happy creating her crafts and doing the floral arrangements for weddings along with home design. She has always noticed the big and mostly surly Owen Black and hopes he will make a move one day.
I am already in love with the new location and the new ex-military men at Foxhole and looking forward to getting their stories.
Homecoming Dogs of War: Foxhole is a fabulous beginning to a new series. The victims from the Dogs of War series are back with more of their fellow soldiers. They have built a place for all of them to be safe on a moon brain near a little town. Aiden is the first of the friends to move up there. There has been a group living there that have built to their oasis. The head of the project is Owen. Owen gets help from the town tourist, Grace, to decorate Aiden’s cabin. Their interactions have been interesting up to this point. It is fun to watch them fall for each other. JM Madden writes great characters, and the plot is a great combination of romance and suspense. I couldn’t put the book down. I can’t wait for the next story!
This prequel story, for the Dogs of War Foxhole series, gives a glimpse at the men living in this secluded mountainside compound. Readers of the Dogs of War series are familiar with the abuse and tragedies of these men, those new to the series will get a detailed explanation near the end of the story. We know Aidan and Angela, now we get to know Owen and Grace as he finally lets his guard down. The concept behind the Foxhole is clever and well planned out. The team is strong and getting better by the day, all in anticipation of something bigger. I was given an early copy and wrote my review voluntarily.
Homecoming: Dogs of War Foxhole Book 1 By J.M. Madden
I absolutely loved this book and can't wait for the rest of the men from the Foxhole retreat to find their HEA. Owen Black runs the retreat with precision but every time he goes into town he checks into Grace Lane's flower, bead work and is thinking of a run for town mayor. But will she accept that he is one of the men who were experimented on by the Silverstone Collective. When Aiden, Angela, and baby Fallon perhaps they can raise their little family without constant worry of someone kidnapping her.
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read the book and I voluntarily reviewed the book.
Foxhole is the first book in a new series called Dogs of War: Foxhole. This was a really good book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. This story centers around Grace and Owen. He is the manager of the compound that the men of Dogs of War. Grace is attracted to him, and he is attracted to her. He is afraid to act on the attraction because of the things he and the men he lives and works with have been through. He doesn't know how to talk to her about any of it. They have a lot to work through to get the HEA they deserve. Will they succeed? Get this book and find out. Sorry, no spoilers.
A brilliant start to a new series and a wonderful set of new characters. Owen Black has endured so much and feels totally responsible for the men at the Foxhole, so much so he denies his own feelings for Grace. But fate has other ideas and a push from friends gives him the confidence to try. It is not all plain sailing but worth the effort. Wonderful to see Aiden, Angela and Fallon enjoying their new home and a very special Christmas. Cannot wait for more Foxhole stories.
As we step into Foxhole, a wave of emotion crashes over you—anger at what these men endured, tempered by deep empathy for their suffering. Owen is the embodiment of structure and restraint, and watching him unravel just a little for Grace is quietly beautiful. Grace herself is fresh, sassy, and full of warmth, and their love burns slow and steady, building into something powerful that had me cheering them on. Fallon is pure joy from start to finish, lighting up every page. With so much heart on display and danger looming in the background, this story delivers an emotional and gripping read.
Great start to a spin-off from Dogs of War. I loved the original series and love this in a different way. It has a small-town romance with paranormal elements kind of feel. I always enjoy Madden’s characters and style. There’s a wonderful blend of old and new characters to enjoy in a new zone of experience. I love the town too. Settings, both in town and on the mountain, are important and are kind of like characters. I’ll enjoy re-reading Homecoming again when the next book comes out.
I love JM Madden's books, I've read them all. After finishing this one I want to go back and reread some of the earlier ones. I liked the romance but its always built around a good story that keeps you wanting more till the end. Hopefully there's another one coming about this group. Their trials and struggles make you appreciate life and know reality in this world is not always what it seems.
I am thrilled the Dogs of War series will be continued in this manner. Reading about how these messed up soldiers acclimate to their new normal and find their HEAs. I’m here for it! Loved Owen and Grace together. Loved reading about baby Fallon, Aiden, and Angela. Can’t wait for more.
I really enjoyed Homecoming. I hadn’t read any of these books for a while, so it took a few chapters to reacquaint myself with the storyline & characters. Owen & Grace’s story was sweet. I’m looking forward to more.
It is so nice to be back with the dogs of war. To see how far they have recovered and for them to have love like Aiden and Owen. Can’t wait to see how is next for romance.
Perfect book to start the new Dogs of War series, Foxhole. Lots of background information spiced with a really nice sizzling romance. So looking forward to more books in this series. Very highly recommend.
J.M. Madden is a one-click author for me! I look forward to more from the Foxhole! Start with Embattled Road so you know all the players but read these books!
Love your characters. All the trials and tribulations make them closer and stronger. My friends and family would love this series. Grace and Owen have me looking for future books in the series! Thank you for making them memorable!
Dogs of War is a series I always recommend and I was so excited to see Madden bring in another group of men dealing with the atrocities of medically induced experiments. We get to see Aiden and Angela from the original series moving to a new compound in the mountains and are introduced to a whole new set of characters. Owens story is the main focus and Madden gives us a moving tale that will lure you in and have you wanting more.
