A Match of Misfortune

Rate this book
Fortune brought him back to England. Misfortune brought them together.

Cecily Bradshaw has despised Nash Markham since before they met. His captivating smile and overdone charms might blind others from the insufferable tease he is, but not Cecily. Only once, in the naïveté of youth, did her resolve momentarily falter, and she is determined it will never happen again. Especially not when, years after their first meeting, Nash returns to England a wealthier and even more devastatingly handsome gentleman than when he left.

Nash Markham has always been a man of remarkable good fortune, except where it concerns Cecily. It is not that he dislikes his fiery adversary, for he finds her utterly intriguing and an absolute delight to vex, but upon his return from India, she seems to have determined that he is the most tiresome man in all of England. No, in all the world over.

But when Nash’s luck takes a drastic and sudden downturn, it is Cecily he must rely on to help him restore his reputation before all he’s built is lost. As reliance gives way to a mutual affinity, the adversaries question if their match of misfortune is actually a fortuitous stroke of luck or if it will ultimately prove their downfall.

*****

A Match of Misfortune is a sweet, kisses-only Regency romance with lots of laughs and swoon. The Bachelors of Blackstone's series can be enjoyed in any order.

Let's just say that I am a huge fan of Jess Heileman's writing and storytelling! Her characters and their struggles and desires pull me in from the beginning and I become fully invested in them and their plights. And this one, Nash and Cecily had me giggling from the get-go with their wit and banter. Oh, Nash, Nash, Nash, Nash, Nash! You better watch yourself because Miss Cecily has taken your measurement for sure! Hahaha!

It was absolutely delicious to read and see their chemistry bursting off the pages. Now they only need to step up and admit it. Hahaha! The secondary characters were written just as well as the main two. And how they watched and saw everything was delightful!

Not only is the love story swoony, and the banter witty, but the bits of mystery and suspense scattered throughout kept me swiping those pages very quickly! An engaging and delightful story that had me laughing out loud, sighing, cheering and swooning! Definitely another winner from this wonderful author! And if you're a seasoned reader of her other books, then you'll have fun catching a little easter egg about one of my favorite characters she's written!!! *Clapping* Hee Hee *Smirk* Maybe some of you will catch my reference, some of you might not but hopefully it'll encourage you to go read this book and then go read her previous ones!!! Even my teenage daughters adore her books!!! These are beloved characters that can and will be adored by readers of all ages!!!

Content: Clean. Some kisses but nothing further.

I received a copy from the author. And will be purchasing my own copy. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Nash is undeniably captivating, and his playful teasing only adds to his allure. While Adelaide finds herself irritated by him, she can’t help but acknowledge his good looks. This delightful and clean read masterfully weaves an enemies-to-more storyline that keeps you engaged. The blend of drama and romance is expertly crafted, making for a brilliant experience! I absolutely loved the London season backdrop.
I received a complimentary e-copy of this book and read it with pleasure. I was under no obligation to leave a positive review.

"Some things are worth the risk. I want you to be happy.”

-A Match Of Misfortune, is a delightful, kisses-only wonderful Regency romance with witty banter, delightful humor, sizzling tension, swoony moments, and sparkling clean romance. The enemies to lovers tension from the very beginning sets the stage beautiful for the rest of this dear story to unfold. Watching dear characters initial opposition transforms beautifully into undeniable attraction and, something more complete had my heart. Layers of beautiful sacrifices, deep loyalty, unexpected challenges, and sacrifices along the way of this story were both tender and inspiring, which simply added an extra layer of depth to this dear story! Seeing endearing characters realize they are enough and can have the yearnings of the heart be reached leads to such a dear happy ending! Blessings come in many forms and being grateful makes a difference. My friends, this is a dear story worth reading!📚🙌🏻❤️ -Also is each story within this dear multi author series!💯

“So you see, without all the bad that happened, I would not be here, unequivocally and wholly in love with the single greatest fortune in my life. I don’t know how I ever got so lucky.”

This is a fantastic enemies to lovers through a fake betrothal story! I love a story where the main characters have a history, even if it’s short and years in the past. I loved the banter, drama, and sweet romance.

Cecily is intelligent and determined. She’s determined to never marry so that she can always take care of her sister but she promises her father she will go to London for a season. Enter Nash the consummate tease and flirt. Cecily is determined to hate Nash no matter what but he slowly shows here there is more to him. Nash’s tender care of Adelaide just might tip the scales in his favor. 🫠 I loved seeing Cecily’s opinions change and her teasing Nash. I enjoyed Nash so much, especially when it appeared that he had given away every bit of his luck. 😉 I enjoyed Nash’s family and getting another glimpse of Blackstone’s was so fun.

A few more quotes:
“I’m glad to know it is an actual betrothal. I suppose we truly can take advantage of those benefits Lady Bridget mentioned.” “We are alone together in a carriage, are we not?” “Yes, but Rothsburg spoke of stealing kisses during their carriage rides together. It seems the proper course of action for those of us who are truly betrothed. Even if only temporarily.”

“You had best be careful. You might be entering a battle of wills you do not wish to take part in.” “Perhaps. Though perhaps not. I never realized how entertaining it is to watch you squirm.”

“I think you underestimate your hold on a man.”

This was a fun story! Cecily and Nash have a rough beginning. He teased her by acting like he was going to kiss her six years ago but to her disappointment and horror he didn’t. Now she hates him. He went off to India but now he is back. Nash has always had good luck but now he is having bad luck. Cecily and Nash get into a fake betrothal to benefit them both. I really liked the chemistry and teasing between them. I also liked how much they both cared for Cecily’s sister , Adelaide, who is in a wheelchair. Nash was driving me nuts sometimes with his behavior, I would have slapped him if I was Cecily haha. I loved them both though and loved watching their relationship progress. Overall a great story and I recommend!

This was a very delightful, enjoyable read right away! I was hooked on the characters and plot immediately, and was very excited to see where it would go! Around the middle of the story, I felt like it was starting to drag a little, but it didn't take long at all to pick back up and get enjoyable again!

This was one of those books that they had feelings for each other, but didn't want to admit it, and didn't even fully realize it, and then there was 6 years of not even seeing each other. The fire between them when Nash returned to England, (mostly from Cecily 😅) was so entertaining and just added to the story. Especially knowing that most of it was just a front to hide deep feelings. But of course, Nash never gave up on Cecily, and led her through it all. 🩷

And I also REALLY hope the author is going to write a book about Adelaide & Frederick...because they were the sweetest. 🥹🩷

This is one of the Bachelor's of Blackstone books. It is a series of books written by different authors that are stand alone stories with a few crossover minor characters. The connection between the books is a gentleman's club where blackballed men are allowed entrance. They can be read in any order and are kisses only Regency Era romances.

I really enjoyed this story and the characters. There was a bit too much discussion of "luck" for my particular tastes, but I understand it's usage, especially considering the title.

There are also a couple of Easter eggs from another book this author wrote. It was one of my favorite ones, so perhaps that is how I recognized them.

I was given the opportunity to read an advanced digital copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I love Jess Heileman's books so I was super excited when I found out she was one of the authors in the Bachelors of Blackstone's series.

Cecily Bradshaw has made up her mind about Nash Markham—and it’s not flattering. His smile and smooth charm might fool everyone else, but not her. Well… except for that one tiny lapse years ago that she refuses to count. Now, Nash is back from India, richer, more handsome (if that's possible), and more irritating than ever, and Cecily is determined not to let him get under her skin. Nash has never had trouble landing on his feet—until now. His once-reliable good fortune has completely run out, and unfortunately, the one person who can help him put things right is Cecily.

There are so many things I loved about this book: the hilarious meet-again (is that a thing?), all the references to bad luck (the black cat, broken mirror & more), the witty banter, Nash's flirting, and more. I love enemies-to-lovers romance and this one is delightful. The slow burn is perfectly paced and the shift from enemies to friends to more feels natural, not forced.

It was a happy surprise to find a familiar red-headed character from one of my favorite Jess Heileman books make an appearance. When I realized who it was I couldn't help but smile. (Clap! Clap! IYKYK). I already loved Cecily and Nash's interactions so that was icing on the cake!

If you’re in the mood for a Regency romance with forced proximity, witty banter, slow-burn chemistry, and a pair of stubborn characters who can’t decide whether to kiss or strangle each other, this is the book for you.

I received a complimentary copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own.

‘As they sauntered their way toward the Grove, Nash leaned in close to Cecily.
“Just so you are aware, I am not opposed to you stealing a kiss from me tonight.”

Cecily kept her gaze forward, but he could tell she was fighting a smile by the way the corner of her lip lifted slightly.
“Still trying to get your luck back, I see.”

She could keep his luck for all he cared. He simply required an excuse to kiss her.’

A Match of Misfortune by Jess Heileman is out today, and if you’ve been craving a historical romance with wit, warmth, and just the right amount of romantic tension—this is exactly what your TBR needs. 🙌

Enemies-to-more? ✔️
Forced proximity? ✔️
Unlucky twists, clever banter, and stolen moments that made me swoon? ✔️✔️✔️

This book had me completely hooked. I loved how fiercely devoted the characters were to their families and to resisting their feelings (until, of course, that plan completely unraveled in the best way).

If you’ve read Jess Heileman before, you already know her stories hit the perfect balance of heart and humor. If you haven’t—start with this one and prepare to binge the rest.

A Match of Misfortune is available now—grab it today and treat yourself to a delightfully swoony escape!

“From the moment Cecily Bradshaw had first set eyes on Nash Markham, she disliked him. In truth, she’d disliked him even before that.”

From the very first page, I was intrigued and captivated by Cecily and Nash. With an enemies and attraction vibe, the chemistry is dazzling and the banter is out of this world. Jess Heileman delivers a brilliantly snappy story with luminous characters and a riveting plot, and I couldn’t get enough of this amusing Regency story.

“Do you know what I am certain of?”
“What?”
“That I would like to kiss you.”

Nash loves to flirt and Cecily wants nothing to do with it, and six years later, the connection is every bit as fictitious. I was delighted by the one-bed trope and the way they skirted it, as well as every other interaction and situation found within these pages, especially the luck.

This is the perfect addition to the Bachelors of Blackstones series.

Content: mild romance

This book is entirely dreamy. Nash. I love him. He is witty and charming and flirty and unlucky and resilient and I appreciate him. Cecily is strong and kind and witty and flirty and clever and has the best MC energy. So, again, dreamy.

If you like Blackstone, which you should because he's a quirky and quality dude, luck, superstitions, London, romance, fake betrothal, and so much banter that gives you butterflies and makes you sigh, read this one!

Fun, engaging, and beautiful enemies to more, set in Regency.

This author creates the most engaging stories. And this novel is no exception. The wit, the banter, the emotional investment - all wrapped up beautifully with the most comfortable prose.

It was a delight to follow Cecily and Nash as they navigated from childhood nemeses to more, their sweet romance making you turn one more page. The romance is truly very beautiful, showing the weight of love and the sacrifices one is willing to make. Such a great addition to the series.
And though some characters of the series reappear here they do not create enough of a statement to have to read the other books. This novel can be easily read as a standalone.

However, the novel is also rich in a wonderful portrayal of blessings we sometimes disregard or discount as given. The story truly makes it a great study on the example of Nash of how to surely count your blessings - not deeming them as misfortunes or fortunes, - when one faces unexpected challenges . But also on Cecily’s as she also realises the gifts she’s been given.
Add to that some villainy, underhandedness, misunderstandings, and all things Regency Beau Monde, and you are definitely here to enjoy the book.

Plus a special “Easter egg” of Mr. Crauford and Honora!

Possible triggers: disability and superstitions against it.

I had a privilege to read an advanced copy and absolutely loved it! All opinions expressed are my own.

Cecily and Nash had incredible chemistry from the very first chapter! I loved how much Nash tried to poke at her and how she couldn’t help but respond back.

Favorite parts
-when Nash’s luck had run dry… how he kept having all the unlucky superstitions happen to him.
-Nash’s assistance for Cecily’s sister Adelaide and how deeply he saw her.
-how Cecily secretly pinned so hard for Nash and was willing to give up so much to be with him… once she decided to stop fighting her feelings.
-Lord Blackstone! He was quite the character.

Favorite Quotes:
Now, all he wanted was to show Cecily he was worthy of someone like her. No. Not someone like her. He wanted to prove he was worthy of her.

“So you see, without all the bad that happened, I would not be here, unequivocally and wholly in love with the single greatest fortune in my life. I don’t know how I ever got so lucky.”

And after years of resisting the undeniable pull between them, of pretending it did not exist, Cecily knew without a doubt this irrational connection to another—to Nash—truly was the most incredible thing. Nothing made more sense to her than this.

A clean story. A very enjoyable book in this multi author series ‘Bachelors of Blackstome’s’ . This is an enemies to lovers story, with Cecily and Nash feeling the need to compete against each other. They have not seen each other for a few years, but when Nash returns from India as Cecily is having a season this resumes.
A well written story and I liked the characters and how they were portrayed. It was a pleasant change to also have Cecily’s wheelchair bound sister feature strongly and highlight how a person with disabilities is viewed in that period, and the challenges they face. Then we have Nash and has he given his luck away, which adds a little something and different to typical story lines. Recommended.

A Match of Misfortune by Jess Heileman continues the multi author series ‘The Bachelors of Blackstone’, and this brilliant book did not disappoint! It was a wonderfully fun, witty and engaging story beautifully written and full of heart. An enemies to more storyline between Cecily and Nash who had an encounter 6 years earlier before Nash left for India which left Cecily humiliated and embarrassed by Nash’s behaviour. Now, back from India, the handsome and charming Nash, is seemingly admired by everyone, except Cecily who stubbornly refuses to be charmed by him. But, as Nash’s fortunes seem to take a turn for the worse, and Cecily steps in with a plan to help with his luck and his damaged reputation, she slowly finds herself drawn to Nash and realising that there may be more to him than she allowed herself to see.

The story has a brilliant cast of secondary characters who I think bind this story together with their unwavering support and love for both Cecily and Nash. Introducing Adelaide, Cecily’s wheelchair bound sister was also a really thought provoking and emotive narrative. Seeing how poorly disability was viewed at the time is fairly sad to comprehend, but Jess wrote this storyline in a beautiful way, demonstrating that Adelaide had so much love from not only Cecily and her father, but also Nash and all the wider family and friends and their unwavering acceptance and desire to challenge the social norms of hiding disability away was such a lovely side story that truly made my heart full.

The story is a clean romance with great characters, a story that holds you captivated and an immensely satisfying conclusion which just made me so happy to read. Despite being part of a series, it can be read as a standalone, but there is some character crossover between stories. Highly recommend!

Lucky Us!

For Nash Markham who has always been very lucky, a string of bad luck gets him blackballed for White’s and snubbed from society. I felt lucky to experience his and Cecily’s journey! The lengths he would go to restoring his luck, as well as some of his misfortunes, were hilarious!

I recommend this book for those who enjoy humor, enemies to lovers, fake engagements, and close family relationships!

Spice Level: 1.5 (Kisses only, mild description)

The banter from the beginning is endlessly amusing. You instantly like the MMC. And the FMC can throw it right back! The moment he sneaks home through the dining window is priceless. His lingering looks build the anticipation, and his cute, younger brothers add joy to the story.

Beaquething his forever good luck to the FMC was a genius touch. That simple concept throughout the story makes you want to keep reading into the wee hours. (I did!)

I also loved that the flash forward doesn’t make them too old. So many times in Regency books they flash foreword to their 30s before they meet again after a loveless marriage or death of a spouse, and I never relate to that as well. Childhood sweethearts giving into love at last might very well make this my favorite book in the series! A perfect finale.

I would love to read Adelaide and Fredrick’s story next!

✨A Match of Misfortune✨
Final book in the Bachelors of Blackstone’s Series

“You had best be careful. You might be entering a battle of wills you do not wish to take part in.”

An absolutely delightful conclusion to this series! I have enjoyed reading each of the Bachelor’s stories and getting to see more of Lord Blackstone and his unyielding support of his collection of misfits!

In this story we have Cecily and Nash who start off as enemies. Nash is an incredibly lucky, optimistic, incorrigible flirt and determined to make a name for himself as a merchant. After six years away in India, he makes his way back to London after receiving word he is to receive an inheritance, which includes an estate, from an aunt. Once back in London, luck seems to befall him wherever he goes! He is being recommended to White’s, making connections with potential investors, invitations are being offered to society events, and his lovely Cecily is still single.

Cecily is caring, strong, independent, and devoted to her family, especially her younger sister who is unable to walk and uses an invalid chair. Cecily knows that if she were to marry, she could not guarantee the care of her sister if something were to happen to her father. Because of that she has decided she will never marry and instead use her dowry to support herself and Adelaide. After a tension filled goodbye to Nash, she is all the happier to have this ridiculous flirt of a man out of her life.

“Forgive me. With all that I’ve been attempting to accomplish this past week, I’ve been … a blasted pigeon.”

During a wonderful evening at a ball, Nash finds that his luck has seemed to have transferred to Cecily. He never believed in superstitions, but after a series of embarrassing unfortunate events, he is determined to get his luck back from Cecily, and will do whatever it takes. What follows is the most delicious, slow burn, tension filled story that I absolutely LOVED!!

“There was not a day that passed where something would not remind me of you. Where the image of you would not come to my mind.”

𝒮𝑜𝓂𝑒 𝑜𝒻 𝓂𝓎 𝒻𝒶𝓋𝑜𝓇𝒾𝓉𝑒 𝓅𝒶𝓇𝓉𝓈:

The “meet-again” after six years apart
Nash and bird encounters (seriously so funny)
The chapter with the chess game
The relationships between all the characters
Lord Blackstone- every moment with him!
Gifts from Nash 🥹
A glimpse at the previous Bachelors
The fake betrothal, and all the benefits 😆
All the flirty banter
The slow burn!! 🔥🫠♥️
The epilogue!! It was perfection 🤍

📚✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨📚
Title: A Match of Misfortune
Series: Bachelors of Blackstone
Author: Jess Heileman
Genre: Regency Historical Romance (Clean, Closed-Door)
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

📝 My Thoughts:
This book was like sipping tea by a sunny window: comforting, familiar, and quietly joyful. Cecily Bradshaw and Nash Markham are a delightful pair of reluctant soulmates, bantering and bickering their way from rivals to something tender, believable, and swoony.

The enemies-to-lovers setup is well executed. The dialogue sings with wit. There’s genuine emotional weight throughout the plot, especially around family, responsibility, and what women were willing to risk (or sacrifice) in the name of love and loyalty. Cecily’s devotion to her younger sister Adelaide was especially poignant, adding a beautiful layer of depth to her character.

So why not five stars?
🔁 In chapter one there is an overuse of the phrase “invalid chair” four times in one scene without variation. No synonyms or softened alternatives like wheelchair, rolling chair, or Adelaide’s chair. The repetition feels clinical and undercuts the otherwise respectful portrayal of Adelaide’s condition.
🕊️ A few pacing dips slow the momentum in the middle, and while the closed-door style is appreciated, the emotional payoff felt just slightly muted. One more heart-to-heart would have brought it home.

Still, this is an uplifting, sweet romance that I devoured with glee.

📌 Who Would Enjoy This?
💕 Fans of clean romance
💬 Lovers of witty banter (think Elizabeth Bennet with better aim)
🛏️ Those who enjoy a one-bed scene without the scandal
👗 Readers who love their Regency served with heart and hope

⚠️ Content Considerations:
• References to disability (Adelaide uses a chair)
• Past loss of a parent (Handled with warmth and dignity, but good to note for sensitive readers)

🔖 Favorite Quote:
“Sometimes others see our strengths more clearly than we do ourselves.”

📌 Final Verdict:
A fresh, feel-good Regency with heart. Not without flaws, but the charm wins you over. The author delivers a story that’s funny, family-focused, and full of romantic tension, all while keeping gloves firmly on. Even though it’s the 7th book in the series, it stands perfectly well on its own. A lovely addition for fans of the Bachelors of Blackstone.

This final story in the Bachelor's of Blackstone did not disappoint. This one is filled with lots of banter between the MMC and FMC. Every time they are together sparks fly but is it hate or actually are they hiding their feelings for one another?

Cecily Bradshaw has despised Nash Markham since his father married her governess, the woman who was like a mother to her after the death of her own mother. She felt that Nash had replaced her and she hated how he always seemed to win at every thing they did. She hadn't seen him in years since he had gone to make his fortune in India. When her father wants her to have a London Season, she will be staying with the Markham family. When she first arrives, she is told that Nash will be returning to England but since the family hasn't received a letter saying he has left India, she is confident she won't see him.

Cecily is surprised when Nash returns the same day she arrived in England. He is not the same lanky young man that he was but instead has become even more handsome as well as wealthy. He still has the same luck that makes everything he does prosper. They pick up right where they left off with him vexing her and her lashing back at him.

When Nash and Cecily dance at her first ball, she is rebuking him for the way he has neglected his family. There is a discussion about his luck and as the dance ends he tells her she can have his luck. From that point everything in his life takes a bad turn. How can he get his luck back from Cecily?

Cecily has a beautiful sister Adelaide who has a disability where she cannot walk. She is determine to always take care of her sister and so she has no plans to ever marry. She is concerned a husband may possibly put her sister in a home. With many men seeking her out and one getting ready to propose, she makes a deal with Nash to have a fake engagement.
She will benefit from stopping anyone from pursuing her and he can hopefully regain the respect he has lost in the Ton.

Lord Blackstone will come through again to help Nash as he becomes another one of his misfits.

This is a fun story and the perfect way to complete this multi-author series. I really enjoyed the way each author brought out the impact of the Blackstone's men's club in their books.

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

All the love for Nash & Cecily! A Match of Misfortune is the capstone in the delightful Bachelors of Blackstone’s series & Jess Heileman brings all the wit, charm, & romance in this darling Regency! I enjoyed every minute of this enemies to lovers, fake engagement story as every form of bad luck seemed to rain down on poor Nash.

Cecily Bradshaw’s a wealthy heiress who’s vowed never to marry, mainly because of her dear sister Adelaide. When she & Adelaide go to London to stay with her former nurse for the season, she hopes the son, Nash Markham, her nemesis, is still in India. Ever since meeting Nash he’s gotten under her skin with his flirtatious teasing, devastating smiles, & charming good looks. When he returns home unexpectedly, her heart can’t stop beating a little faster.

Nash Markham’s good fortune in his shipping business has finally brought him home to England. When he arrives, he’s thrilled to find the woman who vexes him to no end neatly tucked into his home. Unfortunately, his good luck has finally run out. After a brief exchange with Cecily, suddenly everything that can go wrong does, & he finds his inheritance, profession, & reputation all threatened. To save his reputation & stave off fortune hunters, Cecily proposes a fake engagement. But, can she turn fortune’s tide, or will it drag them both under?

I loved this story! From their hilarious remeet-cute to every form of bad luck there is (black cat, number 13, walking under a ladder, broken mirror, etc.), this story completely captured my heart. Poor Nash goes through the wringer & I felt for him as literally everything including the weather seems to be against him. But, each circumstance he handles with grace, & his kindness shines through. I loved every sizzling undercurrent of attraction between him & Cecily.

Cecily for her own part is a loving big sister who wants Adelaide’s happiness, so much so that she’s willing to sacrifice her own. I loved the way Nash showed his love for both her & her sister & convinced Cecily she could risk love.

It’s such a fun, witty, heartwarming story. Highly recommend! Loved the mention of Honora too (IYKYK). I received an advanced copy from the author, but also purchased a copy in Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are my own & provided voluntarily.

I loved this story so much!

Cecily and Nash have know each other since they were teenagers and Cecily has NEVER liked him, despite what her heart might think. Nash is a flirt and a tease and Cecily refuses to fall for his charms again, now that he has returned from six years in India.

Cecily has closed herself off from the idea of marriage in order to secure her ability to care for her disabled sister. Despite this, she comes to an agreement with her father to spend a season in London in order to find a match. With information of her substantial dowry coming out, she soon finds herself inundated with suitors, none of which catch her interest in the slightest.

Nash is a confident, flirty, and fortunate man. Everything always seems to go right for him, much to Cecily’s annoyance. One poor, youthful decision of his caused a rift between them that he hopes to overcome. Now back in England he hopes to be able to win her over when a series of unfortunate incidents occur and he is deemed to have lost his luck when his merchant ship is reported to have run aground and lost its cargo. Seeing no other option, Nash plans to return to India to start recouping what was lost for his family and his investors. That is, until Cecily announces their betrothal in front of their friends and family.

Now caught in a temporary betrothal, the two much do all they can to restore Nash’s reputation and keep the suitors away from Cecily, all while avoiding catching feelings, at least on her side.

This is a sweet not-quite-enemies to lovers, fake engagement story that had me hooked from the very beginning.

Nash is such a light-hearted and positive person and I loved his banter with Cecily and that she wasn’t afraid to retaliate with her own teasing. These two have had feelings for each other for so long and it’s sweet and entertaining to watch them accept that and choose each other.

Cecily is such a strong and caring person. I so admire her dedication to her sister and her growth throughout the story is caring for her.

These two make such a beautiful couple!

So witty and adorable!

Cecily is not charmed by Nash Markham like everyone else, even when he returns home from India after years away more handsome and charming than ever.

But when Nash's seemingly good fortune takes a turn for the worse, Cecily agrees to help improve his reputation. But as they spend time together, their undeniable attraction to each other grows and they both realize that the line between love and hate is very thin.

What you'll love:
Regency era
enemies to lovers
dual pov
intrigue
fake betrothal
forced proximity
disability rep with side character
slow burn
loyal friends
flirty, witty banter
Nash’s bad luck
swoony kisses!!

Oh my word, Jess has done it again! Her books consistently deliver a delightful blend of fresh wit and humor, and this book is no exception. I was hooked from first chapter until the last and loved every moment in between!

Talk about chemistry! From the initial scene, the tension is so thick between Nash and Cecily and their slow burn but oh, so swoony romance absolutely delivered. The witty, flirty banter exchanged between them is an absolutely highlight of the story. I lived for every moment of interaction between them as their initial disdain transforms into undeniable attraction and, ultimately, something much deeper.

Along with the romance came humor and heart and depth and I was so here for all of it. Loved all of the sweet moments with friends and family (those character cameos!) and all of the support and loyalty shown. All the love for this sweet romance! It has so much to adore and is a must-read for any fan of Regency romance!

This is part of a multi-author series but can be read as a standalone.
