When I was 18 I discovered the free rave scene. Spiral Tribe who were already legends by then always seem to be mentioned. Tho I was more of the Megatropolis crowd I later discovered them in France . This one gave a good inside to what it was those days from the inside from that Soundsystem and tribe. we do need a book on Megatropolis.

I'm definitely biased because I've participated in this culture a good deal (and will continue to whenever I can/whenever it makes sense). So is the author - duh!

I feel like the anecdotes become a bit repetitive as the book progresses "X gal had the speakers, Y guy had to go get them, party went well, we went to the next spot". I could see someone who doesn't really get what this is about being bored, reading about party after party. Could kind of see it as a three-star read in that sense. Plenty of the stories are funny and chaotic though - particularly one about a disturbed nest of bees stinging only cops, and not ravers.

There's also some incredibly poignant commentary on, well, anti-establishment mentality and counterculture. It's surprisingly well written. There's a specific recounting of something that happens to the author which stuck with me on a deep personal level, reminding me of that James Baldwin quote about feeling as if one's experiences in life are unprecedented, but then you read. For that reason alone I'm tempted to give it five stars.

I'm certainly not even close to as headstrong as this crew was (and probably still is), but I've got nothing but respect for them.
