Sense and Suitability: A sweet Regency, enemies-to-lovers rom-com

Rate this book
In this clean Regency rom-com, a woman with a scandalous past (and an even more scandalous secret) swears off love--until the man who broke her heart needs her help. What could possibly go wrong? Perfect for fans of Tessa Dare and Eloisa James looking for a low-spice, witty Regency romance.

After two failed social seasons, her family may think the third time will be a charm, but Emmeline Lockhart just wants to survive with her dignity (and singleness) intact. She thought she'd found her perfect match in Simon Reeves--charming, handsome, a veritable hero from a novel--until he vanished from her life without so much as a "farewell" or "my deepest regrets" (or even a vague apology scribbled on the back of a calling card). Lesson never fall for a man known for his charm.

Fortunately, and unlike many of the other eligible young ladies of the ton, Emmeline has no need for a husband--because she's already found success in her scandalous (and very anonymous) profession as an author. Why bother with matrimony when she can make her own fortune and write men exactly the way she wants them?

But fate--or the misfortune of Simon's reckless patriarchs--has other plans. Simon's once-proud estate is in shambles, his family fortune has been gambled away, and the younger impressionable siblings in his care are running wild across his estate (and possibly across all of England). Simon is in desperate need of a wealthy, prestigious bride . . . and a friend.

Emmeline may not fit the role of heiress, but she can certainly be a friend. Just a friend. She'll help him find a suitable match, ensure his reputation remains intact, and keep things strictly platonic--no matter how dangerously appealing his new-and-improved sincerity and regret may be.

There's just one small the undeniable chemistry that still smolders between them. Can Emme play matchmaker for the man she's still in love with without losing her heart all over again? And is it possible that some love stories--especially the messy, inconvenient, impossible ones--are worthy of a rewrite?

Filled with lively banter, adorable children, a frog named Blast, and swoony kisses, Sense and Suitability is the clean Regency romance you've been looking for. Basham brings her signature humor to the Regency era where social strictures keep the tension tight but the stakes low in this second-chance, enemies-to-lovers romance.

This was an incredibly delightful read. A Regency romance that was exactly what I needed, sweet and funny and a little bit chaotic.

Emmeline and Simon met by chance, became friends and fell in love. But on the night they were to be engaged, he didn't show, just his note and no explanations. Two years later he's back, now a Viscount of Ravenscross, after a sudden passing of both his cousin and his father. He was left with a title, debts, an estate in ruins and younger siblings in his care. His only hope, to marry someone with money. Emmie, seeing the position that he is in now, offers her help with finding him a suitable bride. But will they be able to be only friends or will their feelings just make everything even more complicated. And with Emmie carrying a secret that might tear them both apart, will they find their happily ever after?

I loved this story so much. Emmie was such an amazing character, witty and so incredibly kind, I adored her. And Simon really redeemed himself. I loved how he was with his siblings and the way he loved Emmie.
His siblings were wonderful, Fia with her adorableness, Lottie with her fierceness, and Will with his quiet but insightful presence. They were such a great addition to the story.
So were Ben and Aster and Thomas. I would love to read their stories too.
Also, I have to say that Aunt Bean's lessons were hilarious, I was laughing so hard. And Aunt Agatha did grow on me by the end. And of course, Blast-It-All deserves a special mention.

This was a story full of swoony moments, chance encounters, funny and witty exchanges and mischief. Full of heart and characters that made it special.
This was my first novel by this author, but I will definitely read more. I really enjoyed her writing.

♥ My Overall Thoughts ♥

I absolutely adored this Regency romantic comedy novel! I thought the story was lovely and I really enjoyed the diverse characters in it! I found this to be sweet, cute, funny, witty and delightful. This was my first book that I have read by this author and I will definitely be reading more of her books! I found that the writing style of this story to be unique. The main characters are lovable and the minor characters really stood out! It is a medium paced read that is character driven. It’s all about second chances, joy and chemistry between the main characters! This is an enemies to lovers trope, with a great amount of banter between the two! It was such a fun and entertaining read!

♥ Book Synopsis ♥

“Sense and Suitability” centers around a woman named Emmeline, who swears off men due to her past experiences with them. A man named Simon, who vanished from Emme’s life in the past with an apology letter, comes back into her life later on and needs her help. Simon really needs a wealthy bride and Emme says she will be a great friend and help him find the one. While Emme is playing the matchmaker, she can’t deny that she still has feelings for him, even though he did her wrong in the past. As this story unfolds, these two might end up happily ever after or come to an agreement of being close friends for life. Overall, I rate this a 4 out of 5 stars!

♥ Who I think would enjoy this book ♥

I think people who love reading enemies to lovers romance comedy novels will love this one! It has low spice and comes with a lot of very likable characters! This is also the same author who wrote the “Some Like it Scot” book!

Pepper Basham never disappoints when it comes to romance. Reading a regency romance by my favorite author is a treat and I couldn't wait for the next page.

I loved the nods to Jane Austen and the sweet enemies to more, well...friends, to enemies to more. You'll just have to read it to find out!

The children in this story were sheer delight, and probably my favorite. They brought extra heart and antics into the story. My favorite part has to do with a certain pond scene that I felt was inspired by Mr. Darcy himself! I'm so excited for the authors next book.

thank you to the publisher and author for a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

Perfect for fans of:
- Clean romance
- Themes of forgiveness and second chances
- Clean alternative to Bridgerton
- Witty banter
- Enemies to lovers
- Regency rom-coms
- Jane Austen

This was another great book by Pepper! Emmeline is independent and determined never to lose her heart again, especially not after Simon broke it years ago. She is unique by secretly writing novels under a fake name and she is easily someone we root for in this book.

Simon adds depth and emotional baggage....he was once a charming bachelor but now humbled and forced to rebuild his estate and reputation.

I loved seeing him and Emme navigate their shared past together while trying (and failing LOL) to keep things as friends only! The CHEMISTRY is off the charts in this one!

As always, Pepper brings the LAUGHS to the table. Witty banter, lots of adorable chaos...mischievous situations and yet, still the lighthearted moments bring so much to this book.

My Jane Austen, Regency romance fans who want a clean read, pick this one up.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson for a complimentary copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

One Liner: Not as good as expected, but decent

Emmeline Lockhart’s family is hopeful for her third season, even if she is not. She thought she found her man in Simon Reeves until he vanished without a trace. Of course, Emmeline doesn’t need a man. She has a successful (anonymous) career as an author.

Simon Reeves lost everything he once had and is now responsible for his siblings, who seem to be running around England. He needs a wealthy and prestigious bride and maybe a friend too!
Emmeline agrees to help him find a suitable bride. But with their chemistry still strong, will it end up in heartbreak, or will they write their own love story?

The story comes in Emmeline and Simon’s third-person POVs.

My Thoughts:

After enjoying three stories from the Skymar series by the author, I was excited to read a historical romance written by her (I also have a few of her previous works in my TBR). The alluring cover and the reference to Austen’s work were enough to make me grab this one.

The first half was rather enjoyable, with the setting up of the central conflict, introducing the characters, etc. Some of the side characters, like the kids, as well as the adults (Thomas and Ben), were highlights and made the story a lot better. One character could have been a bit more layered. The sudden change wasn’t as seamless as it should have been.

The main characters were nice, too, though we don’t actually see any evidence of the FMC’s wit and humor, despite being told about it many times. The banter, as such, wasn’t a laughter-inducing kind. It was okay, but not sure I would call it witty.

The second half is where things slip a little. We start to have quite a few references to Austen’s work. Then, the story seems to go into a loop of the same old monologue from the MCs – having feelings for each other but cannot be together due to financial/ status issues. It gets tiring after a while.

That said, I do appreciate the MMC’s stand on certain issues. Despite his struggling situation, he was clear about a few things. That endeared him to me. Still, I wouldn’t have minded if the book were 20-30 pages shorter.

Things do get sorted by the end, as they should. Since mine is an ARC, it doesn’t have the author’s notes, so I don’t know if this is to be a standalone or be series. I’d say three people in there could do with their own stories. ;)

To summarize, Sense and Suitability is a decently enjoyable read with some interesting side characters and a main couple we can root for. While it wasn’t as good as I hoped, it wasn’t bad either.

Thank you, NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

To all the romance readers who want to enjoy a historical romance that mixes the way romances are currently written with the essence of Jane Austen stories, creating a blend that’s nostalgic, refreshing and so easy to love.

Emmeline thought she had found her endgame two years ago, when a meet-cute put her on Lord Simon Reeve’s path. He challenged and admired her, made her laugh and, despite the difference in status, promised to marry her. But the day he was going to ask for her hand, he disappeared without an explanation and never came back.

Until, two years later, Simon appears with a new title, trying to find a wife.

Simon never thought he would have to marry for money but, after the death of his parents and cousin, he’s now the one responsible to provide for his younger siblings and save the state from bankruptcy. He needs a bride, and a very rich one. Even if his heart keeps dreaming about the only girl he had ever loved.

OMG THIS BOOK!! It was so good!✨😍😍 I loved the plot, it has the essence of Austen, as you can imagine from the title. The author wanted to show the balance between duty and your heart’s desire, as well as sibling dynamics and parent-daughter relationships.

The main character, Emme, is a dream. She’s witty, resilient and has a heart of gold. Emme was romantic but sensitive. She wanted Simon but knew she couldn’t have him, so she only wanted to help him find the best bride for him and his siblings.

The book is told in dual POV, which I loved because you get to really witness and understand the motivations behind each character. Every single one of them felt different, with their own personality, traumas and goals, which brought the story to live. I loved following all Simon’s siblings, as well as Emme’s sister and Simon’s best friend (can we have his book, pretty please?)

In fact, as much as I loved Emme and Simon together, my favorite scene was one between her and her father. When I think about this book, I keep envisioning all the characters, main and secondary, because every one brought something to the table and made this story so special.

The plot was one Jane Austen could have done. It was realistic, yet it had the little sparks of humor we often see in historical romances written nowadays. This was not a retelling, but a new story dealing with themes Austen liked to include in her novels.

I loved that this book was contemporary to Jane Austen, so the main characters were reading Jane Austen and indirectly telling each other how they felt using the stories they were reading (literally what any romance reader wants😭). I also loved that the main character herself, Emme, was a novelist, and it was discussed how her reputation would suffer if anyone discovered her profession.

As for the audiobook, I really enjoyed listening to it and I appreciate that we had two narrators, one for Simon’s POV and one for Emme’s. That being said, I was so in love with the book that sometimes I wished I had a physical copy I could read without having to go on walks or cleaning my room (again) to have an excuse to continuing the story. My walks lasted twice as much thanks to the audiobook though, so I shouldn’t complain.

I would not recommend this book if you are looking for an unrealistic rom-com, because, even though there is humor, the characters have problems that feel real. Also, it’s a clean romance, so it doesn’t have spice.

Overall, I think the author succeeded in dealing with themes Austen included in her novels while maintaining the current vibe of the genre. Sense and Suitability was addicting and enjoyable, but also made me want to reread Austen so badly (especially Sense and Sensibility, because that was the book Emme and Simon were discussing).

I really hope this author continues to write books in this subgenre. This was a pleasure to read and I can’t remember reading a HR crafted this way before, so we really need her to write more!

I kindly received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Okay. I’m starting a petition for Goodreads to add an infinite stars selection. This sweet story needs more than a measly five!

Pepper Basham has taken the original classic tale and flipped it on its head, given it a witty spin, and lavished it in hope and humor. And she’s done so with style and panache!

Emme and Simon have a chance meeting that blossoms into a solid friendship that eventually evolves into a love affair. Unfortunately, they live in the days of high society and respectability, a time where wealth and reputation are valued more highly than mere romance and love.

Then tragedy strikes and they are torn asunder. Both are hiding secrets and both long to have the impossible dream of true love.

And thus ensues an adorable comedy of errors and unfortunate encounters, and a look at a society that once was (and I’m so glad it was and isn’t is!)

Swoony kisses, witty conversation, and some snappy dialogue come together to present one of the most delightful reads of the year!

The blurb had me at Rom-Com and the book delivered, for the most part. I am an escapist reader. I read to be entertained. I like a sweet romance or a twisty murder mystery, but they have to take me away and entertain. With Historical Romance I want a slow burn and to see how the characters get around the strictures of their society and time. Emme and Simon have quite a few problems to overcome on the road to their HEA and at several points I didn't see how they would do it. But: Love will find a way.

Two years ago, Emmeline Lockhart fell in love with Simon Reeves only to have her heart broken and her reputation impugned. After seeming to court her, Simon takes off leaving her with only a cryptic note. Now she is back on the marriage mart after having poured out her hurt and venom in her latest bestselling gothic novel, a career that is a secret. She is not really looking for a husband, her writing is providing a sizable income, but her aunt is putting pressure on her father and Emme figures it is easier to go along. But seeing Simon at the balls is proving to be a pain in the heart and when they end up alone while dodging prospective suitors, the kiss is electric and so devastating to both of them.

Simon Reeves thought his life was going well then it all crashed and burned. Now he is the Viscount of Ravenscross with a bankrupt estate, missing siblings and the responsibility for his three youngest siblings. Sometimes life just isn't fair. Now instead of marriage to the woman he loves, he needs a marriage to a wealthy woman - now. What a mess and to make it worse, much worse, he has to see Emme on the arm of some lout who just doesn't deserve her.

Simon knows he can't have Emme, she has no money, and her family standing is not suitable for a Viscount, but the heart wants what the heart wants even when everything is against them. There has to be a way out, but Simon just can't see it.

Emme knows Simon is not for her, but she can still be his friend. Helping him find a suitable bride may be what she needs to do to finally move on from him. Maybe she can get another book out of this messy entanglement.

My thanks to the Publisher and Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.

✿•*`¨*`•.¸✯ This Regency-era romance follows a country gentleman’s daughter and secret author on the side, Emmeline Lockhart, who’s navigating her heartbreak from Simon Reeves, newly-appointed Lord Ravenscross, who’s struggling to keep his family’s estate afloat. Super cute second chance romance, plus very lovable side characters 💕

✿•*`¨*`•.¸✯ Emme reminds me a lot of both Penelope and Eloise from Bridgerton in the best way. She has a quiet side to her, observing the world and pouring her heart into her novels as a secret author. But she also dreams for more of her and other women around her, and she isn't afraid to stand up for herself if someone is putting her down. I liked that despite not knowing why Simon broke her heart that one night two years ago, Emme still finds herself drawn to Simon's kindness and his siblings' innocence and precociousness that she does everything she can to help them make ends meet. She tries her best to understand where people are coming from but doesn't allow them to walk over her. She isn't obligated by any means to help Simon manage his younger brother and sisters, yet she does it out of the goodness of her heart because she knows what it's like to have a piece of their family missing growing up just like them. Emme made for a very witty, selfless and smart heroine 💗

✿•*`¨*`•.¸✯Simon Reeves, on the other hand, reminds me so much of Anthony from Bridgerton. Simon is described as being a typical rogue when he and Emme first fell in love two years ago and is prepared to propose to her, yet everything changes when he loses both his parents. As the new viscount of his family's estate, Simon is struggling to cope with the loss of his parents, pay off his father and cousin's numerous debts, and find his missing younger sister. But he's also dealing with guilt in having to pick his family over Emme and all his shortcomings in maintaining his relationships with the siblings he still has at home who are struggling on their own. Just like Anthony, Simon finds himself torn between the duty he has to his family and his estate's reputation and the duty to his heart and to choosing Emme without any repercussions. Simon is resourceful, caring, protective, and a dreamer 💭

✿•*`¨*`•.¸✯The second chance romance in this book was actually very sweet. I felt bad for both Simon and Emme as their near future together was just pulled away from their reach due to fate and unexpected events. I like the way that it started off as Emme being wary of him and avoiding him at all costs and Simon trying to force himself to forget about her and focus on his family. I liked that they eventually found their way back to each other, learning to understand the other in a way that they had never seen before. I think it was especially cute when Emme convinces Simon to read one of her favourite books and Simon begrudgingly does but ends up having to admit he likes it a lot. Emme learns to admire that Simon gives his all in everything concerning his family, while Simon learns that Emme has built her own reputation of success even though no one is watching. It was very satisfying to see them receive the ending that they deserved ♥️

✿•*`¨*`•.¸✯I really enjoyed reading about Emme and Simon's story, especially with the lovable side characters including Simon's younger siblings. I would've liked to see more about what became of Emme's writing career or Simon's relationships with his siblings (especially the sister who ran away), but everything was wrapped up very nicely other than that. Definitely will be looking for more Regency era romance novels like this one 🕰️

What to expect:
- Second-chance romance
- Secret author FMC x viscount MMC ✒️💼
- Regency era 🪭
- Slow burn 💕
- Mentions of Christian themes

This was a sweet read that is perfect for lovers of Jane Austen, and bibliophiles everywhere that enjoy a book that talks about books. I appreciated that while both main characters had obvious flaws, those were not used in any kind of illogical way to manufacture drama where it wasn’t needed. This was a fast read that while quickly resolved, still had a lot of heart. I did notice this is marketed as a “clean” romance and I’d be remiss if I didn’t state how much that terminology (especially when used in marketing) bothers me-there are less charged ways to say that it is no spice (which is perfectly fine!). I would definitely read more if it became part of a series.

This is a book where hope defies all odds, bringing to life the dilemma of love versus duty in such a visceral manner. Sense and Suitability not only ripped my heart out while reading it, but it mended it right back up the more time I spent getting to see Emmeline and Simon in action. This captivating story is the most sublime second chance romance I've had the pleasure of reading where my emotions went along on the roller coaster between reality and dreams. Marketed as clean fiction, Christian readers will be delighted to know that there are powerful and overt themes about God as the Author of our lives, which translates well into how Emmeline and Simon need to look beyond themselves for solutions. At the same time, these two characters are the definition of what it means to keep doing the next, right thing in life, not sitting back as passive observers of their circumstances.

I love that Sense and Sensibility is heavily referenced, with much inspiration drawn from the characters of the book. There are also traces of Catherine Morland, Emma Woodhouse, and Fanny Price (including a funny misassumption) sprinkled throughout, with even more Jane Austen Easter eggs for the avid reader to find. More than anything, I feel like this book delves into Elinor Dashwood's heart with fine precision and in such a profound manner as to exemplify what sacrificial love looks and feels like. Readers who love Jane Austen will find that Sense and Suitability brilliantly captures the complex world of the Regency era by thoroughly examining the motivations of the heart versus the dictates of society. It's a wholly satisfying book that expounds on forgiveness, triumph, and character in the most suitable of ways.

This book delighted me from page one to the very last. It’s a nod to Sense and Sensibility with a delightful romance. The heroine is swilling to sacrifice her future for the benefit of the hero, while he is sinking under the weight of responsibility. Between a failing estate, the needs of his siblings, and the obligations to satisfy his aunt, he is struggling to find a path forward. The book is filled with sweet moments and a touching romance. I highly recommend this book to those who love the regency time period with romance and heart.

I haven’t read historical romance in such a long time, but lately I found myself craving romantic stories — and stumbling upon Sense and Suitability was such a wonderful surprise. Pepper Basham delivers a charming and witty homage to Jane Austen, blending Regency romance with a fresh, modern sensibility in a way that feels cozy, uplifting, and full of heart.

This is a short novel where the plot moves quickly, keeping you engaged from start to finish. I truly loved our heroine, Emme, and her “secret,” which made the story even richer. Her passion is something she’s willing to fight for, and that determination gave her character a special spark. Simon, our hero, did frustrate me at times with the way he acted toward Emme, but thankfully his character arc developed nicely by the end, making his journey satisfying to watch unfold.

Basham also shines in creating secondary characters who all have weight, purpose, and distinct personalities. Their roles enrich the story and deepen the world around Emme and Simon. I especially found myself wanting to know more about Arianne — and I sincerely hope that if there’s a sequel or companion novel, we’ll get to follow her story next.

My only small complaint is that I was hoping for the scene of the first proposal to be expanded — either given a longer chapter or even a chapter of its own. It felt like a moment that deserved just a bit more space to breathe. That said, everything else was so enjoyable and heartwarming to read.

With sweet, faith-filled themes of family, forgiveness, and self-discovery, Sense and Suitability offers a delightful balance of heart, humor, and historical flair. Perfect for fans of Austen retellings, clean historical romance, and feel-good love stories with thoughtful characters, this novel is a lovely addition to your TBR.

This book was absolutely delightful! I cannot even express how much I loved this book. The wit and humor were outstanding which I think shined even brighter than the romance — Aunt Bean’s “lessons” were some of my favorite moments. Simon and Emme were wonderful and I adored their story. Basham was made to write regency.

Sense and Suitability is a lovely start to a new Regency series that is entertaining with great characters in a small town setting. Emmeline and Simon courted two years ago before he left without an explanation. Now, they have a second chance but theirs is not a match that is possible. He, now a viscount, needs a wealthy bride to restore his family estate: she doesn't have a large dowry and she has a secret that the Ton would not approve of. This story has humor with a variety of secondary characters, some adorable young siblings, well meaning but strict aunts, and a sweet ending about what is important in life with a touch of faith that s sure to put a smile on your face.

Yes. Yes. This is exactly what I mean when I say I love romance.

The level of cute in this book was completely off the charts!! The banter was a solid 10/10. This was exactly what I needed and exactly what I got.

The plot is already explained in the blurb, so I won't get into that. What I do want to talk about is just how adorable this book was. Simon's siblings were so KYUTEEE, I genuinely couldn't handle it. The youngest carrying a frog everywhere she went was just unfairly cute. Criminally CUTEEE.

I also loved that the FMC, Emmeline, is a writer who has to keep that part of herself hidden in the 1810s. And I especially loved that the MMC, Simon, isn't a man with unlimited money or resources. Both characters felt like normal people. They weren't overpowered romance leads, and I really appreciated that. Money mattered in this story, and I loved seeing how it affected everything in subtle, realistic ways. I could fully handle and enjoy that level of realism.

Beyond money, the other external forces were society itself, social expectations, the pressure of the 1810s, and Simon's responsibility as the head of his family. These obstacles felt real to me. They weren't overbearing, but they were always there, shaping the characters' choices. It made complete sense why the main characters couldn't just be together without consequence.

Overall, I LOVED THIS. I LOVED IT. It was soft, charming, and endlessly cute. I loved everyone. I loved everything. This book did exactly what it set out to do and did it perfectlyyyy. So, 4.5 stars ⭐️

Thanks so much to NetGalley for the free Kindle book! My review is voluntarily given, and my opinions are my own.

This was an amazing romance. Would like to say, for those looking for a clean romance, there is kissing in the book. I know there are people who will think that doesn't count as clean. Just thought I would mention it.

There were so many scenes in the book that were so funny. Especially when she thinks (I am paraphrasing rather than search the book for it), 'what a crazy way to die, but this would be a great scene in one of my books'.

Really loved it and would definitely recommend this!

My Thoughts:

This was my first Pepper Basham book and it surely will not be my last! I didn't realize that this was her first Regency book and she totally knocked it out of the park with this book! I enjoyed every second of this book! I was able to receive both an ARC and ALC of this book and could not put it down!

The set up of Emmeline waiting to be engaged and to then be spurned is a compelling start that pulls you right into the story where you feel so much sympathy for our misfortunate FMC who has had two failing season since her failed first relationship. In comes a meddling Aunt whose goal it is to help her find a marriage by the end of the season and cure her of her hopelessness in this regard. Luckily her cousin Thomas helps to balance out the absurdity of his mother's determination.

Then there's Simon who has been facing absolute ruin because of decisions his predecessors made. He's been left to clean up a mess he inherited and has had to make so many sacrifices in order to try and save his family from ruin. He is back after a failed attempt to college his sister who ran away and has neglected his other siblings who are now running a muck trying to deal with the same blows that Simon has been recovering from. Add in a friend Ben who has as much whit and humor as he does wisdom and an Aunt with demands that come along with an allowance that will help save him from ruin and you have the perfect storm.

Emmeline and Simons first reintroduction to one another after two years is absolutely one for the books 🤣 It's all the chaotic emotions reemerge and coming to understand that everything was not as it seemed. These two truly struggle through what it means to be just friends as they try and help support one another.

There's such wonderful banter, absurdity from meddling aunts and wonderful family bonds and friendships in this story. If you love a closed door regency this one is for you. There are many sweet moments as well as moments of reconciliation, forgiveness and growth. This book truly had me in its grips the whole time. It was truly utterly delightful and I hope there will be more to come of these delightful character in Pepper Basham's future books!

There are Sense and Sesabailty spoilers in this book which I've not read that book but didn't feel like I had to know the book to enjoy the references to it (it definitely will enhance your experience if you have read it though)

The audiobook was well done and so enjoyable to listen to! It is Dual narrated with the narrator reading and doing the voice of everyone when it is in each characters respective POV. It was well done and a great listen!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC and ALC of this wonderful book, all thoughts and opinions are my own!

Happy Release Day!

Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for this arc in exchange for an honest review!

"It's one thing to love a woman for the way she makes you feel, but it's another thing entirely to admire her for who she is."

3.5 stars

An enjoyable read that lacked some pace and...romance?

Both characters in this book were great. Great personalities, great interactions with other characters, emotional issues that hit you right in the feels constantly. And they were so great whenever they interacted.

But this was definitely slower than I would have liked and there wasn't nearly enough interactions between the two main characters. I know this is set in a time where unchaperoned interactions were limited, but this is also fiction and I think I just needed to see more of these two together. There were always other people around to take away from their development, and we are CONSTANTLY reminded of why they cannot be together.

So the romance itself was a little lacking, just them yearning from afar for most of the book, a couple of actual interactions sprinkled in, and then back to yearning from afar.

But overall very cute and would recommend 💛

Sense & Suitability brings together wit, tension, romance, oh… and don’t forget Jane Austen! Yet another swoony favorite from Pepper Basham!

I’ve loved Pepper’s contemporary romances of late, and Sense & Suitability brought the same energy and banter as Some Like it Scot and Authentically, Izzy into the regency era! The setting was impeccable, in a fictional town in the county of Derbyshire. Viscount Ravenscross (aka Simon Reeves) is working to redeem a home that’s giving gothic castle vibes while stitching together his broken family.

Ah, his family. Much is left unresolved. We unfortunately never meet two of his siblings. But the sibs we DO get meet… they’re everything. Will is quiet but so desperate to contribute to the family plight and help Simon revive the estate. Lottie is a mischievous little lady, but her heart is in the right place, and she’s similar to Emme in many ways. And five-year-old Fia is an absolute darling, with her constantly muddy dresses and her beloved frog named “Blast” for Simon’s favorite word.

As for Emme, she was the perfect fictional heroine. Witty, loving, charitable, and desperate to help Simon despite knowing she can no longer be in love with him. Ugh, the agony, y’all. The drama… the struggle. I LOVED that she was a writer, and exploring that side of her. She also reminded me of Jo March at a few points?

I apologize, but I am going to rant for a while still.

The Sense & Suitability references were on point, and it was so perfectly adorable that Simon read the book at Emme’s recommendation, and that he spent so much time comparing himself to the fictional heroes therein. It’s so cool that this book takes place during Austen’s era, and thus Emme can compare herself to the other authoress.

Per usual, Pepper Basham’s writing left me in stitches. Seriously! She weaves ironic situations, witty banter, and delightful mishaps in such a way that I couldn’t put the book down. Add to that the sweet, swoonworthy romance and a couple perfectly timed kisses, and ugh, it was perfect. I feel that sometimes romantic tension gets obnoxious and over the top, but I never felt that way with Emme and Simon!

So, yes. Read Sense & Suitability. You won’t regret it!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest (and enthusiastic) opinion.

I've been so invested in this story from page one, it was that good. It definitely gives off Austen vibes, with the classic feel. I've really been enjoying the second chance trope lately, so that made this one extra special and enjoyable. 🩷
Emme has so much fire and determination in her, she was such an inspiration. I loved how she put that towards forgiving Simon and helping him.
His siblings really made the story as well. 🩷 They made me laugh so much, and pulled the story and couple together perfectly.
I'm very anxious and excited to see what the author comes up with next, I'll definitely be signing up for anything! 😍

2.5⭐️ - rounded up.

I really wanted to love this, and there were some moments that were very sweet (particularly with Simon and his younger siblings) but unfortunately they weren’t enough to save this book for me. The middle third of the story was the strongest, when it felt like it had a clear plot and some actual interaction with our FMC/MMC, but the beginning and end thirds were slow and incredibly repetitive which made the story feel overly long.

I think the first problem I had is this didn’t feel like a regency romance. Phrasing, characterisations and behaviours were all from a much more contemporary (and American) story. Throwing in some stock phrases and a LOT of references to Sense & Sensibility aren’t enough to properly anchor the story in its historical setting.

Also, constant references to how witty and intelligent the FMC is without actually showing us any of that wit or intelligence in her conversations is a real failing. This book just wasn’t funny, and there was no back and forth between the main couple which is what usually carries a romance story for me.

My main issue though is that we don’t see Emme and Simon falling in love and that’s what I’m looking for. That’s what makes me kick my feet and hold a book to my chest, what makes me reread and adore the characters, and it’s just not in here. We are told they are IN LOVE, repeatedly, and despite the circumstances which drive them apart at the beginning of the story no one can compare to each other. But we’re never shown it as it happened before the book begins and this meant I didn’t feel connected to them as a couple, I wasn’t rooting for them to get together. I wasn’t desperate to see their HEA because I just wasn’t invested enough in their love story.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own. Thank you to Thomas Nelson Fiction and NetGalley for the ARC.

Yet another wonderful book by Pepper, but am I surprised? Not at all! I almost expected to love this one, and sure enough, I did. I will say that if I could do it over again, I would’ve read Sense and Sensibility, first to be more familiar with all the references. However, it’s definitely not required to enjoy the story.

This book is a classic second chance romance with a bit of an enemies to lovers vibe, especially considering how these two broke up in the first place. You knew it would take time for them to find their way back to each other, but wow, was it worth the journey. It’s a super sweet story.

Emme and Simon fell in love years before, but circumstances... namely a change in Simon's station, made it impossible for him to propose. He never explained why, and she ended up being the talk of the town after they split apart. Now, years later, they find themselves back in the season, with meddling aunts pushing them to marry... yet also reminding them that they CAN NOT consider each other.

So, what do they do? They slowly work their way back to friendship. But, of course, it’s hard to stay "just friends" when all your heart wants is so much more. Society has expectations, and Simon needs a woman of wealth and Emme is now far below his station. She can’t give him what he needs, so instead, she decides to help him find a more suitable match.

Emme has a heart of gold and is determined to help the man she still loves, even if it means stepping aside. She wants the best for him, and if she can’t have him, at least she can help him find a better future. She's such a kind, selfless woman...honestly, better than I could ever be!

This story is a page turner, with a sweet, heartfelt romance. You’re in for a real treat with this one.
I rated this one a 4.5, rounded to 5 stars!
I received a complimentary copy, and this review reflects my honest opinion.

I knew instantly this would be a five star read for me. It is incredibly well-written and has all the spirit of a Jane Austen novel. It truly measures up to the best the regency sub-genre has to offer in my opinion. I've read a lot of regency era stories and this is now among my favorite. Read this in your head with an English accent to a regency manor ambiance youtube video and immerse yourself in these words (that's what I did 😭).

Yes this has wit, yes this has humor, yes this has lighthearted sparkle, BUT there was depth to this that I had not anticipated. I mean there is wisdom in here that made me cry easily. These characters and their plights felt real and I could picture the writing so well. The bookish awareness is executed flawlessly. I adored Emme and Simon's characters from beginning to end. They are self-aware and reflective. They felt three-dimensional and I was bought into their love story immediately. This is also just a clever second chance romance! I don't think I've read a second chance structured quite this way and it worked so well. Solid amount of side-characters too!

What a sensible read this was indeed. I felt like I read this at the perfect time and I'm thankful for it. Congrats to the author for this recent release. I was sent my physical copy by the publisher to read and review but this was one of my easiest five stars of the year.

Love lost!

Only Emmeline Lockhart, Gentleman’s daughter with no dowry to speak of, could turn heartache into something else.
When she waited in the garden for Simon Reeves to propose, nephew to the Viscount of Ravenscross, little did she know that he’d left her after penning a short note.
Emme is devastated and retreats to her home in St Groves to heal and write. Would that the healing would happen! The writing certainly is.
Stranger things do happen, especially whilst she’s visiting a distraught widow on behalf of her cousin Thomas, the local vicar.
Emme certainly didn’t expect to meet Simon, now Viscount Ravenscross, after she’d chased a young child on a rather fast horse. A girl she’d spied dragging a sack onto the back of her horse replete with the widow’s stolen chickens.
Nor did she expect to be precipitously thrown over her own horse’s head into a pond only to be rescued by said Viscount.
Simon has inherited not only the title, but guardianship of his three wild, younger siblings. Simon must marry—someone with an impressive dowry. His estates are near bankruptcy.
A second chance romance, witty and endearing that brings laughter, angst and joy!

Many thanks to the author and publisher.

A Historical Second Chance Romance That Sparkles with Wit and Heart.

This captivating story is one of the most sublime second-chance romances I’ve had the pleasure of reading. My emotions rode a roller coaster between reality and dreams, swept up in the chemistry and banter between Emme and Simon. Every time they shared a scene, the spark was undeniable.

Two years ago, Emme believed she had found her perfect match in Simon Reeves: charming and handsome, until he vanished from her life without so much as a "farewell". He disappeared from St. Groves' society, only to come back now. His family fortune has been lost to gambling, and the younger, impressionable siblings under his care are running wild across his estate, eager to find a wealthy bride who can save his crumbling estate.

Emme, the daughter of a country gentleman with a modest dowry and a secret she must protect, and being an author, still harbors deep feelings for Simon. Though both believe they can’t be together, Emme selflessly offers to help him find a suitable match. What follows is a tender, witty, and emotionally rich journey that had me laughing, swooning, and aching for these two to find their way back to each other.

Basham’s storytelling hits all the right notes: humor, heartache, mischief, and romance. I was incredibly blessed to read an early copy, and it did not disappoint. The story of Simon and Emme is sweet, sparkling with laugh-out-loud moments and clever exchanges. It’s a clean romance, with just the right touch of swoony kisses and heartfelt longing.

If you love second chances, witty dialogue, and stories that balance emotional depth with light-hearted charm, this one is a must-read...Releases on Oct 14.

Thank you, NetGalley and Publisher, for the eARC.
