Great end to the first arc.

description

Hades snatched Diana from Gateway City immediately following her victory over the Tetracide. Now he's holding Circe in chains, forcing Wonder Woman to fight his warrior to the death to save her mother and win her own freedom from the Underworld.

description

The issue mostly flashes back and forth between a story told to Diana by Circe that had a hidden lesson in it, and Diana facing off with Hades via his champion.
Of course, she scores the winning blow in a very unexpected way.

description

But the real lesson here for Hades is not to piss off his wife.
Highly Recommended.

Whoa. WHOA. Holy FUCK.
This is one of the best issues I've read in any comic in a long ass time.

You get these beautifully raw emotional moments between Dinah and her mom that hit hard. Then there’s this fight scene, gorgeously done, visually epic, but also devastatingly sad. And then a defiant, stand-your-ground moment that immediately shot into my top 10 of all time. Just... damn.

At this point, Wonder Woman isn’t just a must-read, if this level of storytelling keeps up, it might go down as the GREATEST Wonder Woman story ever told.

Also…

“You dare!?”
“I DO!”

Jesus Christ, fucking CHILLS.

“You know why I am so powerful. It is because keeping me here is unjust. It is shameful and everyone who knows of it knows the truth of its injustice. And it demands a reckoning.”

I can’t get over the art. It’s so beautiful.

I also like how they don’t sugarcoat what Hades did to Persephone. So many of their retellings are romanticized, but it’s a fact that he tricked and kidnapped her. It was satisfying to watch her defy him, and her design is fantastic.

really dug the parable angle in this one… Strong backstory, great character growth for Diana. Probably my favorite of the run so far. Definitely sticking with this series.

Read the whole series up to this edition (#7) and loved all of it. She is such a unique character being raised in hell but with such grace and creativity.

Loved the series - favorite comic read to date and looking forward to more!

Don’t mind me, just running into Hades and Persephone left and right lately. Beloved daughters must stick together. What a smart plan. This Diana never settles for less than what she wants.
The Li’l Diana stories at the end are also so cute!

Absolute Wonder Woman #7

Issue #7 marks the beginning of a new phase in the story, expanding the world beyond the immediate conflict while continuing to develop Diana as one of the most compelling versions of Wonder Woman in recent years. Instead of relying solely on action, the issue focuses on the consequences of her growing legend and the way others respond to a hero who embodies both terrifying magical power and unwavering compassion. The writing continues to weave mythology, horror, and fantasy into a seamless narrative, introducing new mysteries without losing sight of the emotional core established in earlier issues. Diana's interactions with both allies and enemies reveal that her greatest strength has never been her ability to overpower opponents, but her refusal to abandon hope or empathy even in impossible situations. Visually, the comic remains stunning, with expressive character work and imaginative magical imagery that elevates every scene. By the end of the issue, the series feels less like a simple superhero reinvention and more like an epic fantasy saga, leaving readers eager to see how its expanding mythology will shape Diana's future.

Alright special thank you for adding the “Li’l Diana” shorts at the end of each issue, it’s the perfect bundle of joy for the emotional anvil dropped on me normally during these issues, and wow this issue was just another blockbuster of emotions. In this issue we go back to the Wild Isle, as it turns out Diana has met Persephone before. And Persephone shared with Diana the life that she tries to spread throughout the underworld but is usually destroyed. But every once in a while a small tree continues to grow to one day be great…just like Diana. I love that these two have interacted and shared stories before, it just makes it all the more perfect when we see the look of disgust on Persephone’s face as she has to watch Diana in the Arena of the damned in the modern day as she fights for Hades amusement.

But there is a reason for this fight, and it once again goes back to Diana’s childhood. Circe knew that the day would come for Diana to leave hell, but she had to know how Diana could do it. She called to Hecate one night and in haste Hecate was able to tell Circe what she needed to know. There would be two escapes, the first temporary, but the second is more permanent and the path has already been laid for it. It all lies in a story that impressed hades so much that he added it to his arena, the story is called The Lady or the Tiger. Circe told this story to Diana when she was quite young. There was once a land with a princess who fell in love with a man who was not a prince, when her father realized he sent the suitor to the arena. There he faces two doors, behind one door is a young woman who would be his wife…the other was a tiger and would be certain death. Unlike Diana most people can’t talk to tigers, lol. The princess, still very much in love, told her suitor she would discover which door held freedom and she would signal to him which one it is so he may live. But the. She learned the young woman behind the door was someone she was deeply jealous of and a woman the suitor had once loved. The easy choice has suddenly become painful, could she send her love off to be happy with someone else while she remained trapped and alone. The day of the arena came and the princess ticked her head in one direction to indicate which door the suitor should choose…and so he did…the end.

The very young Diana of course hates this story, she wants to know what happens. But as Diana grows older the story is read again and she still does not understand it. Over the years she jumped between ideas of what it could be, and thought the princess should have been better…which also presumes that she let him die. But then the day came that Diana began to understand…she is not the princess in this story. And as we see now she is met with the same decision as the suitor, with Circe kneeling chained right next to Hades and Persephone as Diana fights a chimera in the arena. Unfortunately Diana is unable to make the chimera yield and by Hades decree she is forced to end its life. Standing above the corpse of the Chimera, Diana calls upon the Goddess Themis and Hecate to see true Justice delivered. Within that arena her eyes spark red and she dares to fly above Hades and call him nothing more than a prison warden. She is powerful because she is here unjustly and everyone knows it and demands reckoning…but hades reckoning is not today and it is time to finish the game. Which door shall it be? Hades agrees and gives her the option of two doors, one freedom the other certain death. But he reminds them that if she should choose freedom then she will never be able to return to the underworld until her death and Circe will loose her daughter forever. With tears in her eyes Circe motions to a door and Diana heads towards it to find freedom. But once she found the correct door Diana turned around and flew up to break Circe’s chains. Hades is confused, he did tell her she may never return. But here’s the thing…seems that quite some time ago Diana ate on of the pomegranate seeds Persephone gave her. So in following his rules she must return to the underworld one month of every year…unless of course hades would break the rules of the seeds and give up his wife in the process. HAHAHAHA, got em!! Unfortunately they have created an enemy in hades, but Diana is also indebted to Persephone forever…but beautifully Persephone already sees her debt paid in full. And having her at your side and being proud of your work seems like a good trade off. As the issue comes to an end Diana flies Circe back to the wild isle, unable to touch the ground or risk staying there for a month. As they part ways they are able to talk about how they beat the arena and how poetic it is that they originally planned to punish Diana by sending her down there…but instead gave her a mother that knew the secrets of the world. Diana is able to talk about defeating the tetracide with the help of the lasso Circe gave her…and in tears they bid farewell.

Same quality as the previous issue but this one came with a emotional reflector built in. I think the story about the Princess and the non-royalty man and the fate she holds is supposed to be about how we don’t hold control over all things in our life despite how certain we feel like maybe we should. After all, we expect that the princess saves the man and the man expects the princess to save him since they are so deeply in love. However, only she knows her mind and only she knows how distraught she is. Only she knows what she wants to do and what she maybe will do. As the man or even the listener, we are the mercy of what as may well be the gods. The man/reader doesn’t have to listen to the fate or the advice laid and we don’t have much agency in what the fate/plan will be laid out but we do have control if we are going to take it or go against the grain so to speak. I think that’s what Diana meant she said she is not the princess. She doesn’t represent her, instead that’s who the reader is supposed to be furious over because we feel like it’s very clear what she should do. It’s very clear to us and diana what fate and our life should be like but ultimately, all that clarity and desire we have brings us no closer to having the destined/fated outcome we think should be. In some ways this mirrors what Hades and his seed happened. He had a plan or wish for it but instead something entirely else came out of it, something that he obviously wouldn’t have picked or wanted if he knew that’s where it was going. But instead, he listened to the advice/plan of fate and choose not/to follow it. That’s the real kicker too. just like the audience doesn’t know what the princess choose, neither does the suitor. Hades didn’t know ultimately that his treasure would be used against but choose to act in a manner that would lead it to him being used against him. His fate wasn’t sealed but he choose to seal it. Diana’s fate isn’t sealed and she gets to choose what actions she wants but doesn’t know fully what the road will bring only her agency in the road she wishes try and travels on. Maybe it’s the one laid out by fate, maybe it’s the one goes against it, or maybe the roads not complete and dynamic and will adjust as both diana grows and her destiny from her actions become more clear and less ambiguous.

This finale for the arc was much better than the previous issue. I did not mind the two-issue arc, but it definitely left me wanting much more from the Hades storyline. The previous issue focused more on a backstory that Diana was telling Hades, while this issue delivers action and real, present stakes that determine what will happen to the protagonist. I am really enjoying the action, especially seeing how clever Diana is when facing her foes and even the gods themselves. She defeats Hades both intellectually and physically. This has been a very fun run overall, and I am excited to see what comes next in the following arc. The art is good and grew on me over time, though I will miss Hayden Sherman’s work until he returns. I do recommend this issue.

♥╣[-_-]╠♥ Take my hearts damn it. Take them all!

I love this series.

Damn.

I feel like a broken record - Diana is Diana through and through. But she is much more free in this series, ironic I suppose considering she's imprisoned. I didn't see it until now. In the main continuity, Diana restricts herself to rules and law. But this Diana does not. Both will challenge and defy the gods, for sure. There's an edge here, though, that doesn't exist in the main. An edge and an innocence that are finally separating the two more definitively.

I almost skipped the back up, but I'm glad I didn't. It's so cute.

I really wish Diana was gay in just this comic, she would be such a girlfriend, so self-righteous and out to kill men. I absolutely love it. Esp in this issue, her confrontation with Hades was so... MAGNIFICENT. I am usually untrusting when it comes to Persephone but the art was so good in this issue and her direct/indirect opposition towards Hades was CANON.

I think the only time I find the storyline of Hades and Persephone intriguing is if it is sapphic or gay. Hetero ppl be weird so kidnapping doesn't seem so fun or interesting. - That revelation on the story background - yeah, I almost---- almost-- cried. But Persephone came thru. Just incredible.

"We were teaching each other. As it has been, and always will be."

...

I would review these issues as a set (Absolute Wonder Woman #6 & #7) , since it´s a story told in two parts... And what can I say, there´s something something so special on the mother - daughter relationship between Diana and Circe that keeps breaking my heart and putting it back together, over and over again.

It´s definitely one of the best issues of the series, both narratively and visually. It´s incredible to see how the stories we were told as children take on a new meaning as we grow up and can teach us something new or in Diana´s case, let her live them firsthand.

The design of Lady Persephone is amazing. And Hades is funny as always. "And what of your Circe? Care to place a wager? Oh yes. Your gag. I forgot. Can't be having you say all those dangerous words you're always wanting to say."

And I love "The Lady, or the Tiger?" story. Shocked to find out it's a realy tale from 1882 by Frank R. Stockton. And that he made a follow up "The Discourager of Hesitancy" which always leaves the reader asking questions. Because knowing the answer isn't the point of the story.

I like the adaption of greek myths into this, and the strong emphasis on female relatioships and women helping each other. There's a lot of delightful young Diana stuff in this run that's really good at building who she is today. The tone of this issue is so deeply so deeply epic it's amazing. The writer is doubtlessly talented and deserves to be in a lot of more project like this, hopefully even a mainline ww story.

Such a stunning read.

I’m happy that I was able to pick up these reads again. Absolute Wonder Woman is easily the second best illustrated series in the Absolute collection and the storyline around Diana is insanely positive and brutal at the same time.

This issue held up well to the standards mentioned above. Nothing crazy, but here resilience against Hades challenges is commendable. Can’t wait to dive fully into these later today.

As has been the case with this whole series, I want to like this more than I do.

There's seemingly a core embedded deep in these issues that is both a new vision of Diana and a fundamentally authentic one, which is very exciting and touching.

But I keep being slightly alienated by one detail or another.
