Genetically, I was perfect. Magically, I was damaged. Damned.
Piper Frost is a dead woman walking.
When her uncontrolled magic kills her best friend, Piper’s mother sends her away to Silvestro Academy for the supernatural. Too bad her exile does little to break the curse expected to kill her before her twenty-second birthday. The end is coming; it’s just a matter of time.
Every day, the sky changed, and we changed with it.
As an immortal vampire, Kailani Jauregui has been at Silvestro Academy for a long time. She’s earned her spot on the Styx team—a hockey-adjacent sport with high risk and higher reward—and she keeps her dorm exactly the way she likes it.
She does not want an irresistible new roommate who can’t control her magic—especially not a Frost witch.
Kailani doesn’t trust Piper, or the literal sparks that fly between them, but the chance to feel the sun again is worth the risk. When Kailani and Piper join forces—racing against Piper’s impending death—they will have to face more than just attraction and secrets.
Sun Poisoning is an adult sapphic paranormal romance featuring magic, mischief, and life-altering love.
The book is finally out, so I can give my full thoughts now!
The world-building is impressive. At one point, I honestly wondered if I was suddenly no longer fluent in English, given all the new words I was learning. It was truly genius. The whole paranormal hockey element was so inventive, especially for someone like me who doesn't typically gravitate towards sports books.
Piper and Kailani have amazing chemistry right from the start. I loved the fated curse that connected them, which made their relationship even more intense. The little details really stood out, like the descriptions of Kailani's fangs. Meanwhile, everything happening to Piper's body made her so much more than a basic witch. Together, they were a fascinating pair, both magically and romantically.
Silas is a perfectly sassy sidekick, and I loved everything that happened around him. I'd also love to see personal stories for Prue, Madelyn, and Amelia too!
It was honestly difficult to find the words after finishing this book because of the intense emotions I experienced. The ending had me wanting to tear up. I genuinely thought we wouldn't get our HEA, and I was so beautifully surprised when we did.
That's the beauty of a novel like this. It's nearly 700 pages, and yet it never feels boring. You could easily read so much more.
Overall, don't hesitate. Go read it. You will be doing yourself a favor.
I am not sure where to begin with my review of Sun Poisoning by Phoenix Kathryn. There is so much going on in this book. It is a character-driven fantasy with detailed world-building that takes place mostly at a magic school located in the Yukon, Canada. The main characters are a "cursed" witch and a 2000-year-old vampire, both with massive amounts of baggage and self-loathing. Despite its length, the narrative maintains momentum, which is an achievement in itself. This is an ARC read, and it still needs a considerable amount of editing. I imagine that has already been taken care of at the time of publication. I feel like it is a bit wordy at times and could use some streamlining. Although the majority of the action takes place in one location, the world is expansive. The inclusion of various magical beings, a magic system that remains at times mysterious—particularly in relation to Piper—the school’s regulations, the fictional game of Styx, and the family histories of Piper and Kailani collectively construct a complex universe. This novel is incredibly creative and entertaining. It is dark, sexy, kinky, bloody, damning, and redemptive. The angst and passion between Piper and Kailani are palpable. Kathryn's exploration of self-worth after trauma is a key element. I like Piper and Kailani as a couple. They balance one another. The back and forth is frustrating, however. It is clearly rooted in their respective unresolved traumas, but still, people just need to communicate already. These two are really put through the ringer, and in the end, they are rewarded for their suffering growth. The secondary characters are also interesting and important to the overall plot. I am a big fan of the sassy little undead fox familiar. The banter between mains is flirty and sometimes funny. The explicit scenes were a little out of my comfort zone since I haven't read much of this type. If that isn't your thing, it is not something easy to skip over in this book. There is also a lot of blood. I was really immersed in this novel and would recommend it if the trigger warnings are acceptable. I am giving it 3.75 stars, rounded up. #darkacademia #magicschool #witches #vampires #othermagicalbeings #botanicalmagic #balance #blood #bloodplay #venom #praisekink #control #breathplay #pain #foundfamily #telepathicfamiliar #sassyundeadfox #death #firsttimewithawoman #forcedproximity #enemiestolovers #fatedmates/soulmates #collegeroommates #erotic #explicit #smut #chronicillness #onebed #bisexualrep #HEA #epilogue #theYukon #Canada #Greece #Savannah #Georgia #possessive #touchheranddie #angst #oppositesattract #consent #bodypositivity I received this ARC from the author. This is my honest opinion.
I really wanted to love this book, but there was just something about it that didn't quite "do it for me."
I liked the way Phoenix Kathryn built the world. She is descriptive and imaginative. There were a lot of characters, who had fantastic back stories, and were fun to read about.
Piper is super cute-albeit very naive and timid in a lot of aspects. Most of that is her parents fault and I really started to care about her and wanted to see her thrive and overcome a lot of the grief that she dealt with.
Kailani is super cute. I LOVE that she had a set of double fangs. I thought that was a unique trait I've definitely not read about before, so kudos to Katheryn for coming up with that. I did feel like Kailani was super frustrating in some parts of the book. I know she's *really* old and set in her ways but I really wish she would have given into her feelings for Piper a bit earlier in the book. It's so sweet how possessive she is of Piper and comes to defend her but it gives a lot of whiplash.
Along with that, the spice scenes were just okay. There first couple were sexy and fun but they were just repetitive after that-them just doing the same thing in the same position, etc. Also, I really wish Piper would have given (sexually) to Kailani as well; not just receive the entire time.
Side note, I know the author stated this, but there were *quite* a few typos, misspells, and double words that just kept taking away from some scenes. It's a very long book, so there are bound to be errors, but in certain chapters I had to stop and re-read a few times, just to make sure I understood.
But, yeah, it was a fun and unique story and I'll definitely read more of Katheryn's work in the future! Thank you for letting me read it early!
Piper Frost comes from an important line of good witches, but she’s not in complete control of her magic. She’s also been prophesied to die before she’s 22 and she’s already 21. After the tragic death of Piper’s best friend at her own hands, her mother sends her to Silvestro Academy. Kailani Jauregui has been, without a roommate, at Silvestro Academy for a very long time. She doesn’t want to share her space, particularly not with a Frost witch. It’s hate at first sight, or is it?
The chemistry between Piper and Kailani throughout the entire book is just unmatched, the tension in every interaction. They both felt very relatable, I felt just about every emotion with both of them. I was angry at them, I was disappointed in them, I cried with their pain and couldn’t stop my smile when they felt happiness. The spicy scenes were just incredible, truly so well written and on fire, quite literally.
In my opinion, the pacing was perfect, even with it being almost 700 pages, at no point did I feel like I needed a break nor did I want to put it down. The world building was wonderful, it didn’t take long to picture the dark academia vibe of Silvestro Academy and the beautiful Coves. I loved having Silas’ commentary and I’m left wanting to know more about Amelia, Prue, Madelyn, Willow, Vincent, Rose and other side characters.
I have never been so profoundly wrecked by a book before, I just finished it and the book hangover is hitting hard. It’s a must read. Can’t wait for the next story!
Thank you to Phoenix Kathryn for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
There is a chance this will come across as overly mean, so before I do the mean part, I do want to say I respect any author in putting out their art for people to engage with, as well as taking the time to actually make it.
That honestly leads directly to why this book sucks so damn bad though. There's no new ground being broken as far as setting, story, or characters, but it still had a basic appeal to it.
The big fat issue is how horrendously unedited this book is.
"A always soul knows" instead of "a soul always knows"
"removing the ink regiments" instead of (presumably) "ink remnants"
"it was become obvious" instead of "it became obvious"
"ravish-worth" instead of "ravish-worthy."
and on and on and on and on.
When I'm reading a book, especially a self-published one, I'll overlook the few typos I do spot because no one is perfect and in writing thousands of words you're bound to mess up once or twice.
This reads like someone exclusively used voice to text and didn't edit it at all. before the 250 page mark (OF A 700 PAGE FUCKING BOOK) almost 100 glaring mistakes. And I'm honestly blown away by it. Like... who takes the time and effort to write 700 pages (this book is seriously longer than Perdido Street Station) and decides not to edit it thoroughly? Why put out a book riddled with so many simple errors?
I don't have an answer, but I do have 1 star, which feels generous.
Cursed witches, ancient vampires, a secret magical college hidden in the Canadian mountains and a sapphic love story? I mean I had to read this!
⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 3.5 stars
The best part of this is hands down the world building!! I love me a school filled with paranormal beings, and the way Kathryn did this was *chefs kiss*. The vibes were amazing, the college has a distinct atmosphere and aesthetic, the supernatural beings were unique and well thought out and Piper (magical) storyline is very interesting and original. The setting might sound a bit cliche or like an overdone trope, but I thought this book really stood out as something different!
I feel like the chemistry between the characters is strong, and I enjoyed their dynamic. However I’m not the biggest fan of an overuse of nicknames (especially if I think they don’t make all too much sense) and a repetition of pulling each other close before pushing each other away for stupid reasons, so it’s not my idea of a perfect love story either. Pushing the person you have a crush on or are in love with away suddenly just makes no sense to me, especially if you’re going to try and get them back immediately after?
There’s explicit scenes in this book, and it’s a big part of the main couples dating journey so it’s not really skippable. (Not a problem for me, but just fyi)
The book needs another round of edits, but the author said that the arc isn’t the final version so I’m sure it’ll still receive those last tweaks it needs :)
Thank you Phoenix Kathryn for providing me with an arc! I really enjoyed this!
Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of Sun Poisoning! As always, all opinions are my own and this review is being left voluntarily.

General Thoughts I read a lot of books, but I’m not going to lie… the size of this book intimidated me. To the point I knew I needed to just dive in head first. And I’m glad I did because I really enjoyed it! I managed to read it faster than I expected. I do think perhaps this book could have benefited from being split into a duology or even edited down because it is longggg, but I enjoyed the “extended cut”, if you will. Also, some of the chapter titles are absolutely hilarious??? Loved that. I was so here for it.
Plot & World I want to know more about the world?? With the way the book left off, I am thinking there will be more books in the same setting… hopefully? I definitely would not mind returning. I would like to learn more about the world both in and out of the school setting. That isn’t to say that there wasn’t enough world-building because there was a bunch in this book including a fantasy sport, it just showed how much potential there is for the future, and I am here for it.
Characters I’m not going to lie Kailani frustrated the heck out of me at times. She’s like 2000 years old, and I’m trying to figure out if she is acting her age or not. Haha. Like should she grow up or is her behavior a result of her advanced age? The world may never know.
Romance Okayyyyyy so the romance *ahem* and spice literally went from 0 to 100 reallll quick. I was shocked and well, quite frankly, then I was hooked. Much like Piper. At a certain point, I’m pretty sure the majority of the pages were smut… which I am definitely not complaining about, but important to know for those who both are and aren’t inclined. I, personally, was a fan.
Final Thoughts I had a great time reading this, tbh. The length was intimidating, but I’m glad I didn’t let that stop me. Really hoping to see more books in the future in this world. (Prue, please????) Definitely read the content warnings beforehand so you know what you’re getting into, but I’ve read darker.
(beware potential spoilers below)

I won’t lie, when you get into this story, expect to be dragged heavy through the first four chapters!
While the dragging does lessens in doses throughout the read, in the midst of that, there is sometimes a choppy and or awkward flow within the writing/style that can leave some confusion.
Besides those two major things and the handful of missing/misspelled words and grammar mistakes. I still enjoyed my read and found the creative beauty within Sun Poisoning enough to want to continue supporting any future works of Phoenix Kathryn!
This story is a very character driven story which I enjoyed, however. I do wish being that this story was such, that we got to experience our characters more. When it came to the classes, outside friends, and Piper learning spells. What we received was very minimal and or off page situations — and focused heavy on Piper and Kailani together! (Not complaining at all about that, but yeah)
Being that this was such a packed story, I do wish Kathryn gave us more of the domestic and cute moments Kai and Piper had that were mentioned but not shown. I really wanted to experience more of our mains within the school and with the side characters to who which I also enjoyed. I also really expected the Magnus plot to be a bit more and the after effects to be shown more as well.
All and all, I really had fun with this read and soon as things started to pick up, I literally couldn’t put it down and fucked my sleep schedule up😔.
Kai and Piper are truly such a good pair— even though the constant push and pull did piss me off— and the way the soulmates trope was done with them was honestly very unique and beautiful!
Between these two mated supernaturals. I was mad as hell, flustered as hell, giggly as hell, and sad as hell!
So if a book could bring me through the wringer and have me feeling such colors of emotions while reading, no matter how many mistakes it has, it’s obviously good and worth it!
EEE 🥰 - “moons” - “Our heart” - ‘I started rereading every book on my shelves. I used purple sticky notes to highlight things that reminded me of her. Pink for words I wanted to read her in the sunlight, and blue for words I wanted to read her in the moonlight. And black, well... Those were the words I planned to say above her tombstone. If I had killed her, really killed her, I wanted to be prepared. I wanted to have what little control I could hold onto when I saw her name etched into that stone.’ - A witch of death and a vampire, period!
Departing Comments -Also, when it comes to expectations, I really though the ball would be more -There were times when the academy and its students did give more high school/late teens -Wish we got more experience out of the biting between Kai and Piper as it was mentioned and wanted so often -I hope one day we can get Pru, Willow, and Maddie stories as their set up and characters were really nice -There is a bit of repetition but if you’re reading on the brink of sleep I think you’ll be fine -The spicy scenes were SPICY and I lived for them, though I wish we were given more positions (perhaps I’m just greedy asf 😭)
FIRST OF ALLLLL THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS AMAAAAZING ARC 🫶🫶🫶🫶
⭐ five stars, soul gone, sanity gone, me gone. ofc i read an arc again that STEALS me from my personal life. everyone read this book right now. this book FUNDED MY EXISTENCE. witch x vampire??? BOARDING SCHOOL ROOMMATES??? a little ice hockey energy sprinkled in??? I ENJOOOOYED THE HELL OUT OF THIS. THIS IS MY OXYGEN. JS LEMME BREAK IT DOWN FOR YOU SO YOU GET THIS THE RIGHT WAY???? BECAUSE THE CHARACTERS, THE PLOT, EVERYTHING WAS SUPER- JS AAAAAGH I NEED TO TALK ABT IT. I NEED TO REVIEW THIS. BUT FIRST WEE NEED TO TALK ABT PIPER :((( she is not just a main character she is my emotional support girl. the anxiety rep? painfully good. the curse?? i kept forgetting people don’t actually get cursed to die and still cried like it was happening in real time. piper is so well written she feels like a real person who texted me “btw i might die” and then logged off and ghosted me??? SHE IS JS SO REAL AND KINDA RELATABLE IN ANXIETY AND STUFF???? AND KAILANI- LIKE I WILL NEVER SHUT UP ABT HERRRR YOU HEAR ME- i am never shutting up about her. she is dangerous, magnetic, annoying in the hottest way possible??? JS BURNING HOT?? and so layered that i felt like i was slowly peeling her apart while reading. we got to see DEEEEP into her feelings. she’s not just “vampire love interest” she’s a fully realized, complicated, messy character and i want her. the list on why everyone needs a poetic reader vampire gf IS ENDLESS. and kailani def did a good part to me even making a list on reasons why. LEMME TELL YOU their dynamic = soul magnets roommates. tension. soul bond energy. the way they REALLY BOND in 18381 different ways??? like every scene between them felt like they were pulling each other in closer whether they wanted to or not. the chemistry is SO insane it should be illegal. IT WAS JS WRITTEN FUCKING MAJESTIC AND THEN the plot said “try again bestie” you think you know where it’s going?? WRONG. you will be hit with a twist every time you get comfy. so smartly done, not predictable at all, and the boarding school setting made everything feel so intimate and high stakes. i was able to enjoy the ice hockey part SO MUCH it added depth between characters and the bond the school has because "styx" is js their thing. making the boarding school setting FEEEEEL even more real. AND OFC VERY IMPOOORTANT A spice report: screaming, crying, biting drywall it is literally perfection. daddy praise + degradation kink done RIGHT, and it actually adds to the story instead of just being tossed in. i had to set the book down and go stare at the wall a few times. IT WAS JS SOOO GREAT I CANT PUT IT IN WORDS- and i think we def need a side characters appreciation & the “what even happened??” corner?? ITS UNBELIAVABLE????? WHAT HAPPENED AT THE END EPILOGUE I JS FELT- AGHHHHH guys madelyn my beloved. she is such a sweetheart and i smiled every time she was on the page. LIKE SUCH A SWEEEEET GIRL THE WAY SHE HELPS EVERYONE ORGANIZES SHIT JS SWEETHEART ENERGY!!!! the girl who fell in the lake??? YEAH & I FELL FOR YOU. and that ending?? i feel like we are being FED madelyn content soon and i am SEATED. troughout the book i felt like "madelyn really needs an own book. we need her story." AND I FEEL LIKE WE GET HER STORY SOOOON?????? littleeee short point i have to talk abt next is the drama because i feel like we didn’t get enough backstory on: prue, kailani, and amelia. WHAT WAS GOING ON??? were kailani & prue & amelia a thing before piper arrived?? WAS THIS A LOVE TRIANGLE???? ALSO HOOOW did kailani & prue go from friends to rivals?? what even happened LIKE WHERE DOES THIS WHOOLE “of course the hell hound steals my girl AGAIN” VIBE COME FROM?? i need answers. i am screaming. i know some things were explained but JS NOT ENOUGH?? I NEED MORE BACKSTORY PLEASE AUTHOR, MORE DETAILS, I AM BEGGING. a back story i did enjoy AND WAS VERY WELL EXPLAINED & WE DID GRT ENOOOUGH CRUUUUMBS was kailani family lore REALLY JS 10/10 i loved seeing where she came from, loved the emotional depth, loved the way it all tied into who she is now. chef’s kiss. AND THAT ENDINNNNG LIKE LIISTEN. if you skip epilogues you are doing your life wrong. this one? this one was FIRE. it made me want to stand up and clap. JS PERFECT ENDING. I NEED LIL NOVELLAS ABT THIS. final verdict: this book changed me on a molecular level. i am ruined for other books. please read it so i am not alone in this state of emotional chaos.
This is the first book I've read by Phoenix Kathryn and it definitely won't be the last. Towards the end of this book, you can easily guess who the MCs will be in the next book, and from what little I've seen, I can't wait!!
I have to say I really enjoyed the story itself and the touch of innovation it brings. The characters, both MCs and non- are thoroughly explored, and each has their own sub-story that made them what they're today.
However it's a 4.5, don't worry the ""Bad"" things are nothing major just some persoanl preferences. I have to say I would have liked a little more slow burn and more tender moments between the MCs beyond the hints during spicy scenes—so less "Frenemies with benefits" and more of a real relationship. And regarding these scenes it must be said that the book contains a lot of them, but in my opinion, after the first 2/3 (the first was my favorite, and I wanted to see the same vulnerability, care, and sweetness later in the book as well), the others are a bit redundant. Don't get me wrong, I love spicy stuff, but it should be more varied.
Everything else about the book is fantastic - over all it's 4.5 ⭐ and 4🔥.
Now to the tropes: Age Gap Fated Mates Paranormal Romance Enemies to Lovers Forced Proximity Dark Academia Attraction at first sight Almost kiss Touch her and die Only one bed Roommate Romance Toaster Oven HEA Good Girl, Daddy & praise kink Vampire × Witch Teach me how to please you Vegetarian MC BI x Lesbian x2 pov
CW: Biting - compelling - gore - loss - death - mental health - anxiety - panic attack - depression - PTSD - terminal illness - fainting - migraines - murder - vomit - penetration with a knife handle - mention of first time being with a guy - mention of forced marriage and manipulation
I LOVED this book!! This is the kind of book that keeps you up all night when you know you’ll be a zombie at work if you don’t get at least some sleep! The characters were beautifully crafted, with multiple layers and engaging back stories. I felt like I was stepping into Piper and Kailani’s magical world and discovering the power of their love. The story was beautifully written and I was particularly fond of the authors ability to portray mental health throughout this Romantasy novel. This book is also full of spice and showed the strengthening of Piper and Kailani’s bond. This book was beautiful, spicy and full of magic. I highly recommend you give it a read. ARC reader. All opinions are my own.
"I warned you. I'm your poison." "And I've never wanted to indulge in such venom so much in my life"
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️
I don't even know where to begin. This book had me in a chokehold from the very first chapter to the last page, so a very long time, considering this book is almost 900 pages long. When I downloaded it and saw that number, I'm not going to lie, I was scared. I usually lose interest with very long books or get bored in the middle of it, but luckily, this didn't happen here. Every single scene, every sentence felt like it had it's purpose. I never felt like I was reading stuffer or unnessecary chapters and I definitely didn't get bored.
A lot happens in this book. Like, a LOT. Not in terms of plot neccesarily, the plot was very easy to understand while still being complex, but because of the charcaters. They were all so thought out, but more on that later. Like I already mentioned, the plot is great. The story has some mystery to it and quite a few twists I did not predict (I even audibly gasped a few times!). What I was really impressed by was the balance of romance and plot, and the way in which they were interlinked. It felt like every plot development automatically also added to the romance, which made the book as a whole feel very rounded and made the flow soooo smooth.
The romance was great. Spicy, sweet, and just a tiny bit heartwrenching (I cried for an hour...). I think what made the romance so great was the characters. Kailani and Piper both felt so thought out, and especially Kailani had a backstory that was really detailed. You could tell from their first interactions that they were simply meant to be, Fate, one might say. But what made this book and its world truly great was the side characters. they all felt multidimensional and like their own people outside of Kailani and Pipers story.
Speaking of the world, the worldbuilding in this was pretty simple, but not in a way that seems like it needs some more detail, more in a way that makes it really easy to understand. The worldbuilding felt very consistent. Every time a new detail was added, I'd go "oh yes, of course thats how it works, makes sense!". Not once did I feel like i didn't understand what was going on, which is really impressive, considering I mostly read this in the middle of the night.
And if all of that didn't convince you, there is also a sassy, speaking fox familiar and super fun chapter titles, Rick Riordan (but for adults) style.
Thank you to the author for letting me read this amazing novel ahead of its release and obviously for writing it :)
enjoy some more fantastic quotes because I couldn't choose just one:
"You could do no wrong, Witch. For it is we that define the line of good and monstrous."
"She didn't just make me feel alive. Piper made me feel human"
"For she was the air I needed, the pulse of energy that kept me going, and, though I couldn't tell how deep in shit I was, her heart was mine."
"She had the softest eyes, like rose petals in the rain - so beautiful and inviting, and so dashingly defiant."
"I can't find the stars without you."
"She was a goddess. Temples were constructed in my mind to worship her and only her."
"Careful. I don't want to hurt you." "Like you could ever hurt me."
"She looked destined for life. A star in the terrifying darkness."
First off, the world building in Sun Poisoning is extravagant. I want to visit Briarwood and Silvestro. The first line in the book set the tone for the rest of the story. We learn about Piper, a witch who killed her future husband and best friend during sex. Piper is cursed and has resurrected a human before. She is exiled by her coven after the murder and sent to a school to learn to try to control her abilities. The biggest issue? Piper is 21 and supposed to die at 22. Kailani Jauregui is an over two thousand-year-old vampire. She is forced to room with Piper, much to her dismay. But something about Piper has Kailani drawn to her. there’s a lot of history behind why Kailani is leery of Piper.
A lot of times, when an author has to world build, it can be stagnant or boring. This was not the case. The author was able to build a world while also continuing to tell Kailani and Piper’s story with no issue. My attention was immediately captured.
I did find that I was annoyed by the editing mistakes. At first it wasn’t a big deal. But getting half way through the book, I had noticed at least five or six mistakes—whether that be a typo, wrong word being used or mixing up the word order, it was distracting to see so many. This could just be a me thing though. This is something that makes the rating go down for me, not a lot, but it definitely prevents this book from being a 4.5 or 5 star rating. Like I said, loved the world building in this novel. It was so interesting to see all of the different “monsters” there were. I liked the “Styx” game, and it gave me Quidditch vibes.
I found myself laughing and crying throughout the story. There were times that were witty and times that were emotional. I loved that backstory of the MCs’ families and how they intertwined as well.
The spice in the book is out of this world..no pun intended. There is of it and it can be a little kinky at times. Knife play/scene? Not a huge fan of. Kailani isn’t in her right mind and it felt violating.
The ways authors depict vampirism differs and I am always intrigued by how one chooses to portray the species and what traits they chose to instill in them. Throughout Sun Poisoning, we are told that the sun would make Kailani feral and lose control. It seems the sun does different things to different vampires.
In order to not give away the ending, I will be vague but I will say it’s worth it. The criticism I had are almost forgotten. You would think after I want to see more of their lives after everything that went down.
Overall, I loved the book. The lack of editing and the knife scene is what prevented it being ranked higher.
Piper and Kailani drew me in from their introductions. Piper's story has a heart wrenching beginning, and Kailani is instantly hooked.
The characters were developed so thoroughly, you can literally feel every emotion that each of our main girls felt. Piper's struggles hit hard, and Kailani's journey to learn about how to help her was amazing.
The side characters add so much to the story, including a sassy black fox. Watching the side characters interacting with Piper and Kailani was really fun, especially when they got under our girls' skin.
The world is so well built and engrossing, you can close your eyes and easily visualize what Piper and Kailani are seeing.
I instantly fell in love with Piper. I felt a kinship with her self-doubt and tendency to hold on to her doubts stubbornly. Her character was easy to connect with and very believable. Even in the midst of the chaos of her move to school, she felt believable and interesting.
Kailani was a little harder to connect with. Her stubborn, rude attitude rubbed me the wrong way in the beginning. She eventually came around, but held onto her stubbornness way too long.
The development between Piper and Kailani was slow, but there was enough chemistry to keep you interested and wanting to continue reading. And when things get serious, you're hooked even harder.
Overall, I fucking adored this book. The page count had me scared, but when it was over, I wanted more. Piper and Kailani kept me hooked, and even after 690 pages, I still wanted more of them.
Okay so I loved these characters. The character building for both MCs for me was, too good. Probably the most interesting take on fated mates I’ve personally read, so so good.
I did knock a star because there are some striking typos in this book. Took me a bit longer to read it because I took a lot of breaks to get over some of the bigger ones. No quitters around here and worth it.
This book has all the fall spooky vibes. The dark academia setting, where all of the supernatural creatures are represented.
Piper is a good witch from one of the leading witch families. Destined to be next leader, but seemingly cursed and not in control of her powers. Her family has no choice but to exile her to the university. Piper meets a centuries old vampire ( Kailani) on the train ride to her new university. These 2 opposites are forced to share a dormitory and must learn to deal with each other.
This is a tropetasric filled story, for example: enemies to lovers, touch her and die, forced proximity, 1 bed, first time, knife play, fated mates, just to name a few.
I did enjoy this tale. It was a bit long. the world building was done well. My only drawback was that it seemed some action or communication took place off the page, so the plot jumps a bit in places. I had to reread to make sure I wasn't just missing it.
I do recommend this book and will look to the next one in the series.
I received an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
A sapphic paranormal romance between a witch and a vampire who are fated mates, sworn enemies, and sharing a college dorm room? With humour, danger, spice, and more “good girl”s than I’ve ever read in one book? 🫦 How could you resist?
Told in first-person dual POV, we follow Piper and Kailani. From the start, we’re thrown into Piper’s struggles: she can’t control her magic, she’s cursed, and she’s racing against fate and her own mortality. She’s sent to Silvestro Academy, where she meets Kailani - a vampire with heightened senses (which are very useful), a love of women, and a warm, protective nature that makes her irresistible 💖 She even rubs Piper's stomach when she has cramps - honestly, what more could you ask for in a vampire partner? Their dynamic is full of tension and tenderness, and both characters have their own battles, but their growing connection is the heart of the story.
At nearly 700 pages and 100 chapters, this is an expansive read. I settled into it around the 30% mark, once the world-building clicked into place and the enemies-to-lovers dynamic really started sparking ⚡️ From there, I loved the mix of thrills, romance, jealousy, and heat.
And speaking of heat… the spice is passionate, direct, and includes incredibly sexy imperatives such as: "look at me", “I want you to watch me,” and "swallow me" (vampire 🌶) 🔥
There’s also a race against fate, tangled family secrets, and emotional weight around therapy and mental health, particularly when acceptance from family isn’t there. The third-act breakup hit hard (especially coming right after such a meaningful intimate moment), but it kept me turning the pages, desperate for a HEA ❤️
The final quarter does get darker in tone (definitely check content warnings), but overall this is a rich fantasy with incredible world-building, layered characters, and a gloriously epic romance at its core ❤️
I want more!! A second book. A movie. An audiobook with Kailani's accent whispering in my ear. Give it all too me!!
Kailani calling Piper Witch/Witchy is the cutest thing ever. There is such a play on "Good Girl" for "Good Witch" that rides Piper's need for validation and it's adorable and so hot.
I fell in love with Piper. I connected with her struggles and it was so fun to read!! Even if it was painfully accurate. Her anxiety is relatable. The scattered ups and downs of her disability are perfect. We really got to see Piper's highs and lows. I loved that Piper was never "fixed". Even with all this powerful magic, she was not magically cured of her chronic pain and other symptoms. It was raw and true. Well done.
My favorite part of this whole book is how they fall in love. Kathryn does a great job with details. The progression from sharp and dangerous to flower power princess was a sexy slow burn that I never expected and I LOVED IT. The ending result was so unexpected and so unique. I never would have imagined that's where we were headed. Piper's magic is her emotions and I caught on quick to the little hints between the lines of Piper's feelings changing while she "hated" Kailani, but it was still a rollercoaster of growth for them both. I do wish Piper was more affectionate with Kailani at times, but I believe that's the outcome of her sh*tty family.
There were some editing issues, but Kathryn left us a note. It's a long read, but not hard to read. I had a hard time stepping away. I was given an ARC and this is my honest opinion. I think with some fine tuning in the editing aspect this book could go far. It's a great read and dare I say one of my favorite vampire books!!
Thank you Kathryn for sending me an early copy and I look forward to reading the final product!!
I love so many different fantasy novels and have read countless versions of different fantasy stories. I hear all the time “there’s only so many ways to write the same genre”. While that’s definitely true, this story put a spin on vampires that I’ve yet to experience. It was so good that when I opened the book at 10 PM to “help me fall asleep” I had no idea I would be up until 4 AM finishing this book. Good lord I couldn’t put it down, and believe me, I tried. Sleep couldn’t do anything for me because my brain kept wandering back to these amazingly crafted characters. I would most definitely classify this as a slow burn with great smut. I’m supposed to be entering a reading challenge in a week and I know all I will be able to think about is this book. I absolutely loved the world that was created and I’m supremely impressed at how easily I understood the terms that were previously unfamiliar to me. Overall a fantastic read and one I’m grateful to have experienced, in all the emotional ways I did.
Received an ARC copy but all opinions are my own. The review was posted of my own volition.
I have so much to say about this book, but for fear of spoiling it for the rest of you I’ll just say this… PHENOMENAL! One of the best books I’ve read all year, if not ever. The world building in this book was incredible, exploring U Knighted was unbelievable and learning everything about Briarwood and Silvestro was amazing. For a book that’s nearly 700 pages long, I found myself never wanting it to end! Piper and Kailani have chemistry that could start a fucking fire. I felt every emotion they did, the tension, the anger, the hurt… I cried so hard for about an hour nearing the end of my journey with this masterpiece. They are the perfect couple. I was worried with it being so long that the pacing would be weird, but I was so wrong. The pacing was perfect. Each time I was forced to put it down and be an adult, I thought about was getting back to it so I could see what happened next. The suspense was amazing, the twists and turns blew me away… I have nothing but amazing things to say about this book. I don’t often feel a book hangover… but I can’t really shake this one and it’s gonna last for a while… in the best way. I know 700 pages seems daunting but when this book is released on Sept 23rd, please add it to the very top of your TBR. You won’t regret it.
Phoenix Kathryn has done it again. There are many things you can be sure of when reading their books. A list of trigger warnings, heart-warming and funny dedications (these were very much needed), intriguing and amusing chapter titles, and of course, an emotional rollercoaster. I cried. I laughed. I cried again. I giggled and kicked my feet. I cried once more. I held my breath. I was scared. Did I mention that I cried? Honestly, this book had no business making me shed tears that early. Less than 100 pages in, and I was already wiping my cheeks.
Sun Poisoning had me in a chokehold. I loved the atmosphere, the setting, the cast of characters, the inner workings of the U Knighted University, and the Silvestro/Briarwood rivalry. I absolutely enjoyed the banter between Piper and Kailani, but it’s Phoenix Kathryn after all, so of course, the banter is top tier. I also loved getting to know their families’ histories. Piper and Kailani’s relationship is an explosive cocktail made of tenderness, sweetness, hornyness, and magic. May a love like theirs find me (minus the supernatural elements).
I find myself wondering if I'll ever recover from this book. The world and character building was absolutely fantastic! I really found myself totally invested in this story. Kailani and Piper are beautifully tragic in their own ways. The one liners are probably one of my most favorite parts of the book, they are so funny and perfect! The last 10% of the book absolutely emotionally destroyed me! It was so heart wrenching! But I loved the ending, it was truly one of the most unique things I've read.
I knew I’d like this book, but I truly was surprised by how much, it is SO good, the story is so amazing and there’s so much going on but it isn’t hard to understand, but it also isn’t like one problem, solve problem, another problem comes up, repeat. The story just flows, it feels very natural. With so much going on there’s also obviously a lot of information, but that isn’t infodumped either, it’s trickled in at a good pace. This was literally the first book I have ever read where I didn’t predict any of the big reveals, everything surprised me, which was so much fun because I’m usually so good at correctly guessing those moments. Piper was a great character, she was so complex but was also super relatable, she had a really hard time throughout the book, her incredibly severe anxiety just did not let her breathe, the girl quite literally was suffocated by her vines, and the constant miscommunication and huge amount of secrets did not help at all. I loved the moments where Piper was happy, with Kailani or with Silas, she truly deserves the world, I’m so happy with where she ends up. The only loose end this story was, in my opinion, Pipers coven, but I think that’s okay because it’s kind of mysterious? I actually have like five theories as to what happened so I’m kind of happy that was left open? Silas, my beautiful baby fox with an attitude, I think he deserves his own novella if I’m honest, the true enemies to lovers romance in this book is between Silas and Kailani, their back and forth is hilarious, but it’s clear that Silas loves Kailani deep inside. I love the humor in this book, like yes it is a bit dark-ish, but the humor dotted throughout is placed in all the right spots and I was never expecting it either, my jaw was on the floor several times. The back and forth between Piper and Kailani was hilarious, then adding a sprinkle of Silas? Perfection. Kailani is so beautiful, I mean let’s just say it she’s so hot. She’s so protective of Piper and literally falls at first smell. Their fated mates bond is truly so special to me and I love it so much, she is always there for Piper and always listening to make sure she’s okay, their miscommunication is so annoying but I think they are just trying to keep each other safe or think the other is too good for them. I think Kailanis family history is so interesting too, learning more about what happened and it’s just so heartbreaking? I love how that arc ends in the book though, it’s truly beautiful and it’s the perfect ending they deserve. I wish we got to see more of them at the end. This book truly could have been 1000 pages and I would not complain.
I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review.
Firstly Please read the trigger warnings I’m so serious when I say this protect your mental if you need to.
That being said this is fantastic,it had so many of the elements I personally love in a story. The world building is seamlessly woven into the narrative, allowing us to learn about the setting and characters in an organic and engaging way.
Without giving too much away if you’re a fan of: enemies to lovers, forced proximity and high heat you’ll find plenty to love here. This kept me guessing from start to finish, and I was thoroughly entertained.
The characters have real depth, and even the side characters were memorable. I’m definitely hoping this becomes a series , because I’m not ready to leave this world behind.
1.5 stars rounded up TW (for review): mention of rape, SA, CNC, dubious consent, fear play, knife play I have so many thoughts about the book. I genuinely could make a 30-45 minute video essay on my thoughts on this book and the journey I went on reading it. But for the sake of word count and attention span I am going to focus on things that I think are most relevant to the potential reader looking at these reviews and debating whether or not to read it. *In the goodreads reviews I’ve read I haven’t seen anyone mention this though I could’ve missed something
My main issue that I wish to share is that there is, what I would consider, a rape scene between the two FMCs, one of them assaulting the other. Point blank period. There is a long list of trigger warnings at the beginning of the book and CNC (which is another scene and the C is not clear at all imo) or SA or rape are not mentioned at all. For those who have read the book I’m referring to the graveyard sun scene towards the end of the book. This has minor spoilers (ultimately aren’t that important to the major arc of the story and don’t give much away) but I don’t care, you as a reader deserve to know what you’re going into because it severed impacted my enjoyment of the book. Kailani, the vampire, gets sun sickness where if exposed to the sun she loses her humanity and then therefore ends up killing people (she can then detox and go back to normal if someone intervenes). This happens and then Kailani assaults Piper (the other FMC) while in this state. Afterwards, Kailani expressed feeling regretful maybe once and only really in her internal monologue and Piper mostly ignores that particular instance when thinking about her issues with Kailani. My thought is we’re supposed to be ok with it because Piper climaxes at least once, maybe twice and we see this from her perspective and at times she seems to be enjoying it. But also while this is happening at one point it describes her as shaking with fear because beforehand Kailani was literally chasing her. There is no universe where I read a book where a character does what Kailani does and I still root for them. No shot. A body’s physiological reaction to stimulation does not negate or make up for a lack of enthusiastic consent. An orgasm does not mean assault didn’t happen. There was zero consent in that scene.
I could see someone trying to make the claim that its fear play or it’s, as described in the trigger warnings, knife play. The comparison point I’m going to reference is House of Rayne by Harley Laroux which is a sapphic horror romance novel that also came out recently and that I read last month. That book has some kinky shit, including fear play. But in House of Rayne there is explicit and enthusiastic consent as well as a safe word, which is utilized at one point. You can be as freaky as you want as long is there is no pressure, the consent is consistent and enthusiastic, and there is the trust that if you said to stop the other person would. None of that was present in that scene. That completely tanked my view of this book. Before that there had been more minor sins, like a one-sentence mention of dubious CNC and the compelling scene - which were bad don’t get me wrong - but this was the sin nothing this book could’ve done to forgive, at least for me.
There are other issues I had with the book outside of the consent issues. The pacing was weird, the tone shifts were off putting, the romance arc was infuriating in a way that didn’t make sense, there were at least 50-70 typos, the description of some of the major fantasy moments weren’t clear. Those would’ve brought the book down to about 2 stars minimum for me, especially because for the first approximately 500 pages this was a 5 or 4.5 rounded up star book for me. The only reason this book has a 1.5 rounded up was because I enjoyed the first half of this book so much. It just then reached a point of no return and then dug the hole deeper.
I could go into more detail about things in the book that didn’t make sense or that pissed me off in a more casual way but this is what was most important to communicate to potential readers. I’m not going to say don’t read this book because you’re an autonomous adult (I’m assuming, if you’re under 18 this is an adult romance, read YA while you can still enjoy it) and you know yourself. But this is what I wish I knew that was not mentioned nor alluded to by anything that I saw. If you’ve read the book and disagree with me, that’s fine. This was how it read to me and how I took it.
⭐️⭐️(1.5 rounded up) 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (fair number of explicit scenes and mentions/explicit comments plus the stuff I mentioned earlier. The only reason it’s not a 5 pepper is the smut to page ratio is lower bc this is a 715 page book)
Did it make me sob uncontrollably to the point I couldn’t see the words on my kindle? Yes.
Am I now deeply, painfully in love with two women who only exist in this book? Also yes.
Piper & Kailani now hold my heart. Did they drive me absolutely nuts with their inability to see the undying love they had for each other? YUP. Was it the juiciest, most banter-iest good time I’ve ever had? YUP. I’m obsessed. There’s no other word to describe it.
Silas? He’s a whole mood. I love him. I want him to call me a whore and chitter at me.
Look, this is a thicc book. She’s voluptuous. It’s not a quick read, but that’s because it’s literally jam packed with the most beautiful, mind melding, magical new world you’ve ever heard about and some of the best characters I’ve ever met.
If you want an obsession this is it. If you want to be fully immersed in a new world, this is it. If you want to have your heart RIPPED through the fabric of time and then returned to you, THIS. IS. IT.
Phoenix you have ruined me. I am not the same, and all I can say is thank you for bringing this vision to life and allowing me to grace my eyes with it.
I absolutely loved this read! The detail and character build had me in a choke hold!
Quick Description: Piper Frost somewhat of royalty of a great line of witches meets jocky and cheeky vampire Kailani Jauregui at a school for the powerful and special people of the paranormal and they are forced to become roommates … “and they were roommates” (always have to quote that vine when ever the roommates trope comes up).
Piper and Kailani don’t start off well and hate is in the air but also something else ❤️
What I loved: The way that these characters were put together the detail of both the main fmc’s was a sapphic hate to love lovers dream! I very much enjoyed being left in the dark to discover with each chapter how the main characters relationship built but also their backstory. Without spoiling you will be locked into a chokehold if you like a sapphic paranormal read with the tropes of: • fated mates • enemies to lovers • forced proximity • hockey/sporty fmc • handle and care
