Not a bad sports romance, quite promising actually. I loved the characters and the writing and, the premise though not original was well executed. A bit boring because of the lack of angst but I enjoyed it. The bi-awakening was also handled pretty organically and without OTT drama. From what I’ve read from some of the reviews the next one is even better so I’ll definitely read it.

After reading Shots on Net, I decided to read everything this author has ever written. Whenever I make that kind of decision, I don’t expect all their books to be awesome. I just genuinely enjoy witnessing an author’s progression throughout their books. Changing the Game was a lovely debut, but it’s not a book that I would recommend to start with. I struggled to finish it because, once they realized they liked each other and that their love was corresponded, I feel it wasn’t really clear what were the obstacles left to surpass.

Changing the Game is about a NHL hockey player, Troy, and a former college hockey player who is working for his team, Sam. They hit off from the beginning and Troy convinces Sam to move to his place instead of living in a hotel-perfect opportunity for falling in love. As I said before, the pace was a bit off and everything was a bit too easy and sweet. It’s one of those books free of plot, which I wouldn’t mind if I was having more fun with the story, but I was just okay about it. What I appreciated the most was Troy’s friendship with other members of his team- which is very exciting because they all have their own book!

Dnf 68%.
2,5 stars.
I had set this aside after 20 pages a few weeks ago. Then tried again and set it aside at 43%. Tried again and here I am, setting it aside at 68%.

The writing doesn't work for me. I didn't feel any chemistry or attraction. The way the plot is developed, the way the characters act.. I can't really explain it, but I was slightly irritated and bored throughout the book.
That's not a good combination.

Random things that irked me:
-I hate the evil ex trope. It's stupid and unnecessary. Aside everything else, Sam's ex is so bad, they had their biggest fights because she wanted to cuddle while sleeping although Sam couldn't sleep while cuddling with her because of how much heat she radiated. Lol. Who would fight over that? How selfish would someone have to be to insist on cuddling during the night although their partner can't sleep that way? That's ridiculous. Why do authors think we believe that someone would stay for 4 years with such a shitty person?
-Why does Troy think "...how much better it will be when we're having sex for the first time." uhmm you had multiple orgasms together in the last weeks, and had just traded blowjobs while fingering each other? That's not sex?
-I'm quitting with the strange family dynamics. They just don't make sense. Sam not telling his parents for months that he's dating Troy, then bringing him home. He's sure his parents are ok with him having a boyfriend but he never told them? And his mum's reaction? At first and later.. and his dad? It felt all so very unrealistic and forced.

Enjoyable for a light read while I'm struggling to want to finish another book, but I wasn't sold on the writing style and there were a lot of errors and inconsistencies. There was also a lot of telling not showing, which did start to get frustrating for me along with every bit of dialogue being followed by 'he says' or something very similar 🙄

There were also a lot of loose ends by the end of the story, and I was left wondering what the point was of introducing certain plot elements.

I also hated the ex drama right at the end, it felt totally unnecessary and then just resolved instantly - didn't get why it was included.

Sam's parents also confused me when he took Troy to meet them...

Definitely want to read more in the series because the other characters sound interesting, I just hope the loose end thing and the writing style improves!

DNF @ 32% - Very cute and the characters are really great if you are in the mood for an easy story of two people coming together and falling in love, doing daily things together and living their life. All of the comfort read hockey stuff was there too. Great side characters. I actually really liked all the people in this book. They have already established their relationship at this point so I don’t feel like I need to keep reading.

There's not much to say about this that wouldn't damn it with faint praise. Two extremely green flag MCs but dammit, nothing happened. Ever. At all. Seriously. Nothing.

This was like white noise. It's not bad, there's nothing in it that turns you off, but there's so much nothingness, it's mind-numbing.

The MCs are instantly attracted to each other, communicate openly, never hide their relationship, have very basic sex and pretty much live happily ever after.

31% in, it could have been over. 78% in, it could have been over. Without damaging any of the plot.

Also, was there a plot? Not so much. It was more of a slice of life sort of thing honestly. If nothing happened in life.

This book has NO PLOT, none at all, like nothing happens, and that was weird and a bit boring. The sense of pacing was so random that I wasn't sure how much time had passed, if not for the holidays that they were celebrating.

The book starts sometime during summer in training Camp, Troy sees Sam and instantly likes him, they have maybe 2 conversations and then he invites him to move in with him to his spare room, a week passes and after the most bland bi-awakening ever they start dating and living together, after 1 week!. Somehow, time passes, and it's suddenly American Thanksgiving, and we get the big L word declaration.

A few things that bothered me:

-When did this relationship grow? Who knows, because it's not shown, we are just told it happened.
- What happened with all those comments about Mr. Frank being a homophobe? Nothing at all, thank you very much. Also, what was Mr. Frank's job?
- How old is Troy? a mystery because we never get that detail.
- How did Sam afford a two-week vacation to Ireland if he is an intern? Is it because he was living for free with Troy, or is he getting money from his parents?

Basically, there is no story here, just two guys who meet and start dating, and that's that. Lawson and Corwin were fun, I guess? So maybe their books will be better too, here's hoping.

Very very very cute!!
I would have loved a smidge more angst, maybe a bit more plot, or more grit and substance, but I still adored this book.
Both MCs are cutie patooties, and I found their relationship freaking adorable: wholesome, respectful, mature, ridiculously wonderful.
I loved the group interactions even more though! I'd already met Anthony in J.J. Mulder's other series, but I loved him even more here. And Corwin stole my heart 🩷 June pretty was iconic too. I adored the found family vibes this series has going on 😍

I'm really excited to jump into book two! Hopefully it will have that oomph that was missing here.

It seems like the people in this book were so mature and open with their feelings and good communicators. There was never any tension or slow burn or Will they won’t they. They just maturely spoke about their feelings and decided to date then communicated so well. It was almost a bit boring. It needed some pizazz. And it needed a bit more plot I guess.

There are elements of this book I really enjoyed and I think I will read more from this author because all the potential was there.

The characters in this book were really strong, I don’t think I’ve ever been so instantly enamoured with a character like I was with Troy. I just adored him from page 1. At first the story gave the impression we were going to get a grumpy/sunshine dynamic but Sam was grumpy for all of a day so that was a bit disappointing as I LOVE grumpy/sunshine.

The cast of side characters in this were great. I especially loved Sam’s sister June, I thought their relationship was really funny and cute. All of Troy’s teammates we were introduced to were well fleshed out and I’m curious about their potential stories.

The pacing of the story didn’t really work. By 30% they were together and everything was fine and I kept waiting for more things to happen but it was a lot like 70% of the story was a super long epilogue.

One thing I found frustrating was learning things about Troy and Sam’s backgrounds but really not exploring them at all. We get told that Troy is an orphan and grew up in foster care but we don’t know how he feels about it or what that experience was like. It felt like Sam never really got to know much about Troy and it made some of their feelings come across as a little bit shallow.

There were a few things in the story that were just very underdeveloped. At the start we’re introduced to homophobic Mr Frank and then he’s never mentioned again. It was built like there would be some tension off the back of that but it never came.

At the start, it’s constantly mentioned how Troy can never sit still, always fidgeting and then it’s just not really mentioned again. Also we suddenly find out right at the end of the book that Troy is obsessed with Ireland and Sam knew this but we didn’t?

The speech throughout wasn’t punctuated correctly with the dialogue tags and it was a bit jarring. I think using more connectives would have helped with the flow of writing too.

I think this would have been a great book with some editing. Im hoping the next book in the series has ironed out some of this stuff.

This was so wholesome 🥺🩷
I really don’t understand all the negative reviews. Sure, there was little to no drama and their relationship progressed pretty quickly, but their communication was amazing, and everything between them felt so, so, so healthy. The supporting characters were also amazing, and I literally can’t wait to continue with the series. Looks like I won’t be switching to another genre anytime soon 😂

This was cute!

Troy is an openly gay NHL player and probably one of the biggest golden retrievers I’ve encountered.

Sam has just taken a job as a paid intern after his girlfriend broke up with him. He’s never been interested in men before but one look at Troy and he was a goner.

This was love at first sight. I was a little unsure about Sam jumping into a queer relationship so fast but then he cleared that up himself, so i trust his judgement!

Troy was so adorable. Like an excited puppy.

I loved both of them so much!
I’m having a great time with these low angst, hockey bookies!

Can’t wait to see how Nigel St. James will redeem himself in my eyes😌

It was okay.
Sam and Troy had a good healthy relationship without any drama which I liked and the pacing of the story was ok.
The sister of Sam was giving me so many creepy vibes,I don't think I will be comfortable if my sibling talked like that about my partner.
I liked how Sam handled the changes in his life,he was calm and while he was scared he did not let that stop him from staying firm in what he wanted.
Troy was an interesting character,he had a rough past but he still was a ray of sunshine.
I'm more interested in the second book cause I feel the tension already between the new main protagonists and I'm excited to see their dynamic .

This was my first introduction to J.J. Mulder's writing and something about it checks all the boxes for me. There is a pure kindness in Mulder's characters, while also portraying the vulnerability of a lead MC coming out in a professional sport where being anything but straight is not generally tolerated. I agree with other reviewers in that the relationship development does happen rather quickly; however, I loved everything about Troy and Sam’s story. The friend group that stars in the Offsides series is nothing but lovable. It's refreshing to see a portrayal of friends that come from varying backgrounds and yet come together to support and love one another unconditionally. This was the perfect balance of sweet and steamy.

Ot, tyle 🤷‍♀️

Podobno druga część jest lepsza...

This was such a cute read but not a lot happened plot-wise. Troy and Sam got together and fell in love a little too quickly for me, but I still really enjoyed it. It’s a light, easy story without any big events, but it’s a nice intro to the series. I felt like some of the drama toward the end wasn’t really needed. But honestly, all the stars go to Troy, he’s an absolute babe!

Characters: Sam and Troy

I think this book is all about timing. I picked the right time to read it so that I really enjoy it. It's a very easy romance that is very character driven and "slice of life." There is little to no angst, very little drama, and no real conflict. They do get together very early in the book and then we follow them as they fall further for one another and get deeper into their relationship. It's a journey of self-discovery for Sam and feeling what real family is like for Troy.

This December has been very hard for me, so I've been rereading comfort reads and looking for easy, feel good, swoony romances. This fit the bill perfectly. It made me smile from start to finish. I adored these two guys and loved that it truly felt like a warm hug.

I can understand how this wouldn't be for everyone and if I had read it at a different time, it's possible, I might have found it a bit boring since it is such an easy romance. But sometimes you just really need that. There are several small moments throughout this book that hit me right in the feels and like the hand in the pocket in the photo. The small touches constantly. And how much Sam pays attention to the details when it comes to Troy. There is also more steam than I was expecting, and I thoroughly enjoyed that as well.

If you're looking for an easy read with a sweet romance, hockey, very minor angst/conflict/drama, found family, good steam, and acceptance from friends and family then this is perfect.

I picked this up on the promise of an angst free read. Problem is you can stop reading at 30% and not miss anything! By then they're together and nothing else happens. 2* is generous.

There was personality at the start but by halfway I found I had to keep reminding myself which character was which, and finding it didn't much matter. First person, dual pov. Bright possibly adhd Troy became background. Sam tall and grumpy for all of a page accepted gayness without hesitation. They kiss, they're together, day two reading employee handbook and discussing filling out forms!

Things were setup but never went anywhere. Mr Frank who I think was the team manager, big homophobia setup. Never heard of or saw him again. The ex-girlfriend, that just read stupid and did she have to be 'so small' to show difference to Troy's 'man like body' that was odd!
This tiny tiny woman was like a furnace so big no to cuddles, but a big hockey player laying over you is good....

Still don't know what Sam does exactly.

It had potential but was too underdeveloped at every turn.

It was fine - the current average of about 3.7 is pretty fitting.

- There's some pretty stereotypical romance lines (i.e. "what I lack in experience I mean to make up for with enthusiasm" p. 113)
- some phrasing which doesn't make sense from first person POV (i.e. describing a smile as "ebullient" p. 207, or "I don't feel an abatement in my yearning" p. 304 :kek:)
- some OTT feeling stuff ("I nearly die when Sam yanks on a South Carolina team hoodie I know came from my closet" p. 223 or "Troy has the uncanny ability to read my mind" p. 299)
- A pretty meh bi-awakening (I wasn't sure at the beginning if it's supposed to be an awakening or not)
- an overly invested and boundary-less sister ("She pats my [brother's boyfriends] butt as she walks by" p. 224)

I didn't highlight anything pertaining romance and their relationship so that pretty much sums it up.

NSFW infos:
- two White American MCs
- both in their early twenties?
- penetrative sex after I love yous (baby bi bottoms first, vers)
