NAOMI I've spent my life studying blood—its secrets, its mutations, its impossibilities. But nothing in medical school prepared me for his blood sample. One slide under my microscope and my carefully constructed scientific world crumbled. Cells that shouldn't exist. Patterns that defy everything I know.
Then he walked into my lab after hours. Sebastian Vane. Powerful. Ancient. Definitely not human. He offered me a contract written in blood—my expertise for his protection. How could I say no when my own rare blood condition suddenly made sense in ways modern medicine never explained?
I never meant to get pulled into vampire politics or ancient prophecies. I never expected to be hunted for what flows in my veins. And I certainly never planned to feel this burning attraction to a being who's lived for centuries. Now my blood might save his kind... or destroy them forever.
SEBASTIAN Six hundred years I've ruled House Nightshade, maintaining the delicate balance between our worlds. Now a blood toxin is killing vampire elders, and our very existence hangs by a thread.
I needed a brilliant hematologist. I found so much more.
Dr. Naomi Rivers. Stubborn. Fearless. Intoxicating. Her midnight blood calls to me in ways I haven't felt in centuries. The same blood that marks her as both salvation and threat to everything I've built.
Our blood contract was supposed to be simple. Clinical. Temporary. But nothing about Naomi is simple, especially the way she challenges everything I thought I knew about humans and the barriers between our kinds.
As enemies close in from all sides, I find myself breaking my most sacred never let a human get too close. But with a prophecy unfolding and betrayal threatening from within my own House, the growing bond between us might be the key to survival—or the thing that finally destroys me after six centuries of walking this earth.
One thing is contracts signed in blood are binding, and what's happening between us will change both our worlds forever.
This is the fist book I read by this author and I loved it. Dr. Naomi Rivers was the leading hematologist specializing in rare blood disorders as she researched her own blood anomaly. When her newest patient turns out to be Sebastian Vale, a 600 year old vampire elder, the leader of the Nightshade clan suffering from a debilitating blood borne germ, he hires her to figure out who is trying to kill him and other elders. Naomi was deluged with secrets of the supernatural world discovering the disappearance of her mother 15 years earlier was also connected. After they enter into a blood contact and start working together they are betrayed and attacked from multiple fronts driving their connection from blood contract only to emotional attachment and lust turns to a bond that they understand will change vampires and human norms forever. Special mentions to her grandmother who raised her after her mom disappeared and Dr. Iris Rivers who started the process of understanding. This was a slow burn romance but tasteful intimacy added to the story. The interracial aspect was not over played just acknowledged. I like the medical details in the book also. I will definitely read another of her fast paced books.
I thought this was more a 2.5 but the writing wasn't terrible so 3 it is. The primary reason I didn't enjoy this book is because I thought it was boring. The medical aspects were interesting but the romance was just on the pages I thought. There was no real attraction felt, just described so the steamy claim is untrue.
