Celestial Bodies: The Black Arts of Vexora

Rate this book
In the kingdom of Lapistra, where the winds are a birthright and power defines worth, Prince Julen Zephyrus is a failure in his father’s eyes. Magic eludes him, and his life is a prison of royal expectations and secret shame. But when his best friend, Souzie, convinces him to visit Cupidor—a sanctuary for rebels and revelers—Julen’s world begins to change.

There, he meets Dacias, a lion shifter cadet from Rugiria, Lapistra's sworn rival. Fierce, loyal, and impossibly handsome, Dacias is drawn to the boy with bright green eyes and dark curls. As their forbidden connection deepens, Julen begins to question everything—his place in the world, the meaning of strength, and the truth of his own heart.

But just as he’s ready to embrace his feelings, Julen uncovers the dark forces his father has unleashed—forces that could destroy everything he holds dear.

Celestial The Black Arts of Vexora is a sweeping tale of forbidden love, self-discovery, and the unyielding power of the heart to defy even the darkest fates. It is an MM Romance that features a slow burn, hurt/comfort, virgin MCs, found family, shifters, and spice. This ends with a HEA.

This was unexpectedly amazing?? It doesn't feel like a debut novel at all. It feels like an accomplished mm romantacy author. I read it in two sittings, and I was on the edge of my seat for the second half. I debated calling out of work to finish.

THE PREMISE: this is an MM romantacy with great (and accessable) world building, a slow burn romance, and amazing spice 🥵

Julen is the Prince of Lapistra, a land of people who can wield wind magic. Except Julen doesn't seem to have any magic at all, much to the disappointment of his abusive father, the King. Julen is also gay in a country where homosexuality is illegal. Living under the weight of his father's disappointment, his secret sexuality, and his forced engagement to a noblewoman he hates is slowly crushing him.

He needs a break. His only friend, Souzie, convinces him to sneak off to Cupidor for a night of fun.

That's where he meets the dashing Dacius. The only problem is that the King, Julen's father, is responsible for the death of Dacius' mother. How can Julen tell Dacius he's the Prince of a hostile nation? Can Dacius forgive Julen for what his father did?

Julen might be able to escape his past if he can develop the power he needs to end his engagement (and his father).

Because Julen's father has secrets too..and his plans for Julen are much darker than any of them could ever imagine.

I can't wait for book 2! There's no huge cliffhangers at the end of this book, but it's clear the story isn't over yet.

Thank you Blane, for providing me with an ARC. This was the best mm fantasy book I've read since C.S. Pacat's Dark Rise (and I've read A LOT this year, none of them were worth reviewing).

I can't wait to see what comes next for Julen and Dacius. I hope one day I can produce a book that's half as good as this, dammit. Well done mate, I need a physical copy for my shelf asap, please keep us updated ❤️

I got an ARC of this book and I am so happy I did! First off I loved the vibes of the book, aside from the beautiful romance the thoughts of both the main characters felt relatable as you follow their relationship. This is probably my favorite aspect of the book and something the author used so well. I felt for the characters and was able to really hear the voice of the characters come though the page, the emotions the felt, the challenges they faced, the intimacy they held for one another. I’m such a fan of this book! If you are looking for something that gives you those giddy feelings that make you want to kick you feet in the air and scream a little while also feeling like you can’t stop reading because you need to see how the characters are going to make it through the chapter? This is ABSOLUTELY the book for you!

This is an ARC review.

Celestial Bodies — an interesting and heartfelt romance between these two Romeo and Juliet-esque lovers. Julen and Dacian both are sweethearts and just caring people, so it was nice to see them come together. The characters are young and appropriately read that way, both in their strengths and flaws as people.

The writing is choppy, and the pacing is a bit rushed. I can tell it’s Bellamy’s first book because there’s some parts of it that need to be smoothed out and get into a better flow. Otherwise, it’s not that bad. This is where the stars are subtracted from for me.

Story wise, the world building isn’t overwhelming and there was interesting aspects and explained throughout versus lore dumps in the beginning. The “grand plan” however, I struggled with. I don’t want to get into spoilers but I’ll say this: while not intentional, the parallels between “Morab” and real-life freedom fighters/resistances painted as terrorists feels a little raw. Using them as a possible ‘solution’ in the way this book suggested — even when the characters should realize the immense danger it puts those people in who were still living there, including Souzie — well, quite frankly it was very irresponsible. I get they’re young, but good lord.

The last 40% is stressful (not in a bad way — it’s lots of action and high stakes!) that I admit I was peeking through my fingers at times and unsure how they’d ever make it out. I loved the new side characters we get to know during the time too, and see lots of fun potential for future books in this series.

I literally spent all day with my nose in this book! The suspense was killing me! I was on my toes every minute trying to see what would happen next! I love, love, loved it! The characters were so well developed, the friendships were so beautiful and the love story of Julen and Dacias was TO. DIE. FOR! I also loved how the Blane painted the picture of the beautiful world it lived in! The magic, the fantasy, the love scenes, everything was soooo well done! Bravo! A debut novel? I can not believe it! I am floored! Thank you, Blane! I can not wait to see what you come out with next!

Celestial Bodies is a MM romance set in alternate fantasy universe where you have certain powers depending on where you live on the planet. Prince Julen lives in an area where people have a wind manifestation. He is having trouble with his powers and his demanding and cruel father, The King, is disappointed in him.
To get away from the stress and humiliation, he secretly goes to a neutral zone with his best friend. The world is split between territories and this area is where people from both lands can mingle. He meets Dacias, a shifter from the other land and they like each other. The Prince, in his need to be covert, gives a false name. They start a forbidden affair and Julen starts on a path that leads to passion, betrayal, lots of action, heroic deeds, and doing whatever it takes for the ones you love!
Thank you Blane for letting me read and review your book! I adored it! 🩵🩵🩵

I was so pumped for this ARC read and Blane did not disappoint! I devoured this read.

The world building in Celestial Bodies was done just so beautifully and my absolute favourite part of this book, meeting my expectations with its magic and unique creatures.

Terratan and its inhabitants are described in such vivid detail that you feel instantly immersed into this rich wonderful world where your minds free to create a tapestry for you to watch along as Julen and Dacias navigate their way through their story.
Most importantly the world building has been done with a simplicity that didn’t leave me having to break that illusion every few pages by having to reference the map or a pronunciation guide like with a lot of other books (which drives me insaaane!).

Julen and Dacias are adorable and their story is the perfect combination of hurt/comfort meets romantasy and I was pulled in so easily to their love and heartache for each other.

Last but not least is the SPICE and I can tell you the boys were on point with this… Sizzling!

Thank you to Blane Bellamy for the opportunity to read Celestial Bodies it was a fantastic read and I cannot wait for others to enjoy it as well <3

This is an ARC review
I went into this with an open mind and was not disappointed. This is more of a Romantesy which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The thing that I love most about this book is the world building. Bellamy was able to create this complex, beautiful world, with amazing power systems, shifters that shift fluidly, with incredible abilities and a knife wielding badass.

The way Dacias courts Julen is so tender and endearing. Being from different factions means they have to not just overcome their own issues but also societies problems with intermingling while navigating a new beautiful love.

This was very will written. The romance blended well with the action parts. I really enjoyed it and need a second book now.

This book was an absolute joy to read. The friendship between the four of them was one of the most heartwarming dynamics I’ve ever encountered. Their bond, unwavering loyalty, and personal growth made every moment feel so real.

That said, the final paragraph left me wanting more. I needed to witness the downfall of Julen’s father—to see him truly face the consequences of his cruelty. I wanted to watch him burn. While I appreciate that the story focused more on character development, friendships, and deeper themes, that sense of closure was something I longed for.

Klorin quickly became my favorite character, right after Souzie. Their unwavering devotion, their “ride or die” mentality, and their willingness to sacrifice everything for their friend and brother were the most beautiful aspects of this story. It moved me to tears more times than I can count.

Julen’s father was beyond cruel, and his mother—her cowardice was infuriating. Choosing herself and her husband over her own child? I could never. A mother should always choose her child.

Despite that frustration, this was a phenomenal read, and I can’t wait to see what this author does next!

I am very grateful to have received an ARC of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The chapters were short and fast paced. The world that Blane created was both beautiful and interesting, and the characters were lovely and flawed in all of the best ways. This story felt particularly poignant in today's political climate. It was nice to escape into the world of Vexora but the reminders that the politics in this book are not too fantastical was an ever present thought. I think that Blane built a beautiful love story in an interesting and unique world and told it well. I am excited for the further adventures of Julen and Dacias.

I was so lucky to be an ARC reader of Blane Bellamy’s debut novel! This is a bit of a mixed review because there were aspects of this book which I really enjoyed and other that had me considering whether this book was really for me. The end of this book was definitely a highlight and made the whole thing worthwhile!

Let’s start with the positives. I loved the world that Blane built here! It is complex and interesting with a lot to be discovered. The world building was rapid but I was immersed immediately. The way it kept growing throughout the whole book was incredible. I think he has written really strong characters, the two MMCs were super interesting. I loved Daicus’ character and I can’t wait to learn more about him. I also loved Souzie and how she supported Julen but was still a badass the whole time.

Next some criticism. Sadly, I didn’t buy the chemistry between the MMCs and their romantic journey. It felt a bit like an epic friend journey with some unnecessary sex scenes that didn’t add much value to the characters or chemistry. This book could have easily been YA if it dropped the spice; I don’t think the story would have been lost. I was really disappointed that badass Souzie, had a weak romantic storyline when she could have easily been happily flying solo or making the men earn her love with a slow-burn.

I think the writing was a bit clunky but hopefully that improves as the series continues.

Thank-you to the author for providing me an ARC to review. This is my honest opinion.

I had the absolute privilege of reading an ARC of Celestial Bodies, and let me just say—the world-building is phenomenal! From the first page, I was completely HOOKED!

Now, let’s talk about Dacias and Julen. There were multiple moments where I wanted to knock some sense into both of them (Chapter 19, especially—I was ready y'all!). I won’t spoil anything, but trust me, I was practically yelling, “You blockheads! Just kiss already and get over it! We have things to do!”

That said, the slow burn of their relationship was so well done. Their dynamic had depth, tension, and just the right amount of frustration to keep me hooked.

As someone who doesn’t typically read epic fantasy (okay, maybe A Song of Ice and Fire, LOTR, The Hobbit, and The Chronicles of Narnia—but you get what I mean!), this book completely blew me away. Celestial Bodies is a solid 10/10 for me, and I’m not just saying that because I think Blane is incredible—I genuinely mean it! Oh yeah, and the spice was SIZZLE SIZZLE NICE! ;)

I laughed, I cried, I gasped. Great takes on intolerance, oligarchy, found family with shapeshifting, magical creatures and elemental abilities.

- great world building; was immediately immersed in the world
- Names of the country states were kinda weird and somewhat on the nose
- Had lots of Neologisms (new words for things) that sometimes worked: intoxins = alcohol but still used “fuck” in every day speech
- It was split POV’s between Prince Julen and Dacias, but they were split equally which kinda worked by the end
- Loved side characters: brother Klorian, Souzie the best friend

Kinda simplistic dialogue sometimes and then there’s lines that are so moving and gutting

“It was always for you.”
Need a sequel now
Great first novel! Got #advancedreadercopy

Such a wonderful story. I have already read a few shifter stories, but more in a contemporary setting. This fantasy world is therefore new to me. I felt like I was in a fairy tale, the author really enchants you. Yet there is no lack of tension, emotion and the spice was great too. The characters are so well described. Julen, Prince of Lapistra and Dacias, Cadet of Rugira: a love that is not meant to be, the obstacles to a shared future seem insurmountable. But they keep finding each other and fighting for their happy ending. We get this at the end, but the author also leaves some aspects of the story open - so we are still excited to see what happens next with the two of them! In addition to the love story, I was also very touched by the other relationships, such as the friendship between Julen and Souzie and the strong bond between the brothers Dacias and Klorin.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Blane Bellamy’s debut novel, and let me tell you—this book has everything!

An MM romance fantasy where the world-building really draws you right into the story and makes you fall in love with these characters.

Julen and Dacias are so precious. Their story is sweet and sexy (with a bit of 🔥 🌶️!). Finding eachother in a chance encounter and quickly falling in love.

Both men are living in the aftermath of the harm Julen’s father, King Haligran, has done and continues to do to Julen, Dacias’s mother, and the people under his rule. As a prince, Julen is buried under endless expectations-to manifest his wind, to marry for appearances, to keep his (undiscussed) sexuality a secret (only known to his best friend Souzie-the kind of friend we all deserve!). But Julen, Dacias, Souzie, and Klorin refuse to accept this life for Julen and know that he needs to live his best life, and that is with Dacias. Julen and Dacias, along with Souzie and Klorin, create an elaborate plan so that they can be together.

Time and time again, Julen shows his character, first going to his mother to try and talk to her about his true love and then saving her from the king instead of putting his plan in motion. They truly don’t deserve his loyalty.

One of my favorite scenes was Julen facing his younger self—the symbolism of healing his childhood trauma. Telling his younger self, “You are perfect. There is nothing wrong with you. Nothing.” Staying to protect him when no one had protected him from years of abuse. The way child Julen evaporated into purple particles and later manifested by Julen as orbs to remove the dark magic from prisoners and save everyone? Absolutely beautiful!

This book had me on the edge of my seat.

“No more fear. No more hiding.”

I can’t wait to read what Blane does next!

I received an ARC of Celestial Bodies in exchange for an honest review.

I was very impressed with Blane’s debut novel.

Celestial Bodies was a slow burn with moderate angst and the perfect amount of spice. The story was original and well written. Blane’s world building was remarkable and the characters were well developed.

I don’t usually read Romantasy MM, however Blane easily pulled me into the world he created and I am craving more.

I adored the relationship between Dacias & Julen. Watching these two fall in love was so beautiful.

I love that the story tackled some hard topics and Blane handled these really well. The world he created was a reflection of the world we live in. The ugliness of homophobia, the utter fear of being your true self because of it and how this fear affects your mental health and self worth was well represented. I believe the themes of this story will resonate with many readers.

I am looking forward to reading Blane’s future novels and following his writing journey.

4.5 ⭐️ Celestial Bodies is a MM Romance book set in a fantasy world. There are people from Lapistra who have the ability to manifest and manipulate wind and people from Rugiria who have the ability to shape shift in creatures.

Julen is the prince of Lapistra and expected to be married. He is unable to manifest his ability and disappoints his parents. Feeling rebellious, he and his friend, Souzie, sets out to Cupidor, a neutral territory for both people of Lapistra and Rugiria. Because he didn’t want to be seen as the prince and a wanted to stay out of trouble, he goes in disguise under alias Arlo. He meets Dacias, a lion shapeshifter. From there, the two builds a relationship and falls for one another. However, the secrets Julen keeps from Dacias threaten to tear them apart.

The story is about becoming who you’re meant to be and being able to fall in love with whomever regardless it being a man or woman. Julen must discover himself and allow himself to be loved in order to become powerful enough to defeat the darkness. Overall, a good story and I can’t wait to go on more adventures with Julen and Dacias.

This book captured my attention from the very beginning. The premise sounded quite good - a mix of shifters and magic with two sides a war and a forbidden love between a prince-esque figure and a soldier in the opponent's army. Once I started it I quickly found it to be everything it said it was going to deliver.

Julen and Dacias, our two MCs, give college age vibes to me, it felt like that sort of romance if you get what I'm saying, with younger MCs who are still trying to figure their lives and identities out. They meet in the neutral zone between their two sides one night and have an instant connection. It's a bit insta-love, but their relationship developed slowly after that despite their feelings so that label doesn't quite apply here.

The book unfolds through their romeo-juliet love story while they battle outside forces as well as internal, there is quite a bit of character growth in there as well. I really liked the shifter element, Dacias is a lion shifter and I hope we get to see more of that in future books, including him interacting with Julen as a lion because it was so cute!! And Julen is also a really cute character, he and Dacias give me nerd/jock vibes which I found very charming on the two of them.

I'm so glad I read this one. It's a great start to a new fantasy series and now I'm very excited to get more from this world.

*Thanks so much to the author for an ARC! these are my honest and voluntary opinions 💕

Guys. I don’t even know where to start. It’s going to take me a bit to fully gather my thoughts on this story, so I’ll probably be posting more than once about it. First and foremost, reading this book, I can FEEL how much of Blane’s heart and soul went into this story. It is such a relatable journey (AND ITS A FANTASY). I cried throughout this entire book, both sad and happy tears. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, in queer stories found family is always everything and Celestial Bodies had that in spades. The characters and their relationships, not only the romantic connections but the friendships, are so hugely important to the story and I loved reading that so much. I could talk forever but I’ll spread it among a few different posts 😂 the conclusion to it is…read this book. You will not regret it. And Blane, you created something so incredibly beautiful here and I hope you never stop writing. You made me feel so much, and throughout the whole book I felt YOUR story in it. The pain, the fear, the joy, the love, the acceptance. It’s everything. I hope you are so proud of this story and I can’t wait to see what you do next, my friend. You deserve all the praise coming your way, friend.

Blane Bellamy has given readers a spectacular start to his new fantasy series. This story of forbidden love is filled with many layers and an incredible amount of heart. It's the type of book that stays with you long after the last page is read.

Julen and Dacias are young men from different warring groups on planet Vexora. At the heart of the book, is their unlikely love story. One that will take persistence and honesty to succeed. Julen must also struggle for acceptance (both self and by others) as a gay man, to find his true power. The underlying narrative of acceptance and kindness is a wonderful message that Blane has masterfully woven into his tale, that will resonate with readers.

The fantasy elements, world building, and character development are extremely well done. This is a wonderful new twist on the magical world and I am excited for more stories in this series.

If you enjoy a diverse, magical romance with friendships, adventure, queer representation, and a hard-earned HEA, get this book!

Blane Bellamy's debut romance novel (MM romance fantasy) made me cry my little gay heart out.

If you are into:
- the blossoming growth of a character with feelings of having to prove his worth and not be a disappointment to his parents, while living in a country where homosexually is banned;
- this same character being able to find himself and find love with a soldier of an opposing territory while having to hide his identity;
- him being able to overcome challenges and grow as an individual and be able to sever his own imposed mental restraints while becoming a beacon of hope to others...
Then this is your book to read.

I cried at multiple instances. This book helped heal my inner child and gave me hope for my own finding of love. PLUS, Souzie was the mf badass. She MVP and a qween.

This was a great debut book. I really enjoyed Celestial Bodies and look forward to the next story with these two in it. This is so easy to read, the world building was perfect. You are really able to envision Vexora and the different cities and places with in it. You can’t help love Julen. He is so sweet and innocent despite the way he grew up. Dacias is the hero and book boyfriend we all want. He loves Julen and will burn the world to help him. Their love story was sweet and enduring with the perfect amount of spice. Even the side characters were amazing.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun and easy read, I look forward to what’s next for this author.

I absolutely adored this book and I’m so honored to have been selected to ARC read it. Kept me on my toes, while falling in love with the beloved characters. I definitely stepped out of my comfort zone for this read, having only read a few fantasy MM, but I’m so glad I did because it surprised me in the best way. The love and tenderness Blane puts into his characters and this story took my breath away. Loved how tender the characters are with one another, the friendships, the brotherly bond. I was so enamored, very well developed.

Celestial Bodies: The Black Arts of Verxora is an exemplary example of romantasy(fantasy romance). The magic in this novel matches so well with the main characters flawlessly. Julen is clam, quiet, and gentle most of the time, yet in the circumstances intence and cutting. Similar to the winds he can control can be a gentle breeze one minute and as furious as a tornado. Dacias is brave, loyal and determined these traits compliment the lion he can shift into very nicely.

Julen and Dacias fit together wonderfully. They are equally passionate and protective. They are sweet together and their romance is cute.
The secondary characters are delightful especially Souzie she fun, humorous and delightfully intence .
The only draw back is the second half of novels plot feels kind of disconnected from the first half of the novel. While there tension between Lapistra and Rugiria but The dark activities that Julen's father has be upto no major build up and feel completely out of nowhere .

This is hands down my new favorite fantasy novel. From the moment I started reading, I knew Dacias & Julen’s story was going to be special.

Bellamy effortlessly blends political intrigue, magic, and romance into a seamless narrative, offering a fresh take on the fantasy genre. What I particularly loved was the balance between world-building and plot development. Often in fantasy, world-building can feel overwhelming, but here, it enhances the story without ever feeling bogged down by details. Bellamy’s talent for creating an immersive, vivid world makes me excited to dive deeper into the lives of these characters and their journey.

Speaking of characters, Dacias and Julen are EVERYTHING. This book brings back romance in a big way. The courtship, the subtle flirting, the unspoken tension, and yes, the spice, it’s all here. What truly stands out is the mutual respect these two men have for each other. Their dynamic is electric, and the connection they share is nothing short of swoon-worthy. There were moments when I was literally kicking my feet and giggling from the sheer joy radiating off the pages.

Dacias, a lion shifter, might be a fierce warrior, but his devotion to Julen, the Prince of Lapistra, shows a surprisingly soft side, like a golden retriever in the body of a lion. The political intrigue that surrounds them only deepens the plot, adding layers of complexity that kept the pages turning. I found myself utterly captivated by the way the stakes were raised and the careful balance of power at play.

I’m eagerly awaiting the next chapter of Dacius and Julen’s journey.

What I was expecting: a Steamy Romatacy with some light world building & a little drama.

What I got: A world where you love so deeply you’ll face the horrors of Mordor with a dash of Freddy Kruger’s hellish Boiler Room, deep friendships & family bonds.

Blane truly took me by surprise with this book! The magic system was not only well thought out, but specifically unique to Vexora. The build up to the climax had my heart in pieces and my breath caught in my lungs. I was fully invested the MC’s and the side characters (even the freaking horses, no I’m not kidding!) and how they came to be together to face what they needed to face.

I was so fortunate to read this ARC! Blane’s first foray into a sizzling MM Romantacy is a winner for me - though it felt like Fantasy with some spice because I was so caught up with the plot and world itself! I cannot wait to read what comes next from Blane, and I’m actually currently rereading Celestial Bodies because I enjoyed it that much!

prince julen zephyrus, a boy hiding his true self all his life. living in the kingdom of lapistra where everyone can wield wind. but julen is not one of them, living with his father who has abused him his entire life for this very reason. hiding his sexuality all his life but wanting to love someone his entire life. everything shifts when julen's best friend, souzie, persuades him to visit cupidor, a safe place for rebels, a neutral ground

enter dacias, a lion shifter and soldier from his enemy kingdom rugiria. who sees julen once and is instantly smitten by him. he will do everything to just see him once again.

the world building was great. i loved the magic system and how it was set up.

plot wise, i loved how the story went about. it felt cohesive and rightly placed as well.

some things that could have been done better for me personally : how julen’s truth came out to dacias and how dacias reacted. so till that point in the story dacias had always had this mature outlook on things but how he reacted to it all felt disconnected. i wanted a bit more from that scene and how it was handled.

the second half of the book came out a bit out of nowhere to me. no build up was there and i kinda felt like that i was reading two different books. not saying i did not like the second half. it was actually my favourite part of the book but still i needed more build up, more foreshadowing.

romance wise, i loved how smitten dacias was the entirety of the book. i loved him. the yearning, the angst, the tenderness was all well done. and julen riding dacias (not in that way, get your head out of the gutter) in his lion form, i live for these in shifter romances.

the ending was a happy one for them but by no means is the story done so i will be waiting for the next book. if it wil be about the same couple or another, i will be patiently waiting.

tldr : prince julen hides his lack of magic and true self until he meets dacias, a lion shifter from an enemy kingdom. the romance and world-building shine, though the second half felt rushed. still, the yearning and angst made it a solid read — excited for the next book!
