The Book

Rate this book
Alice shouldn’t have opened this book, but she did.

Some novels want to be read. THE BOOK demands it.

Hidden in a dusty box for years, a plain, green book is mailed to the library of a psychiatric hospital. It is sentient. It watches. It listens and manipulates.

Dr Alice Grant is understaffed. One patient away from burnout, THE BOOK wants her. She’s special, but she’s not the only one. Her patients—especially a fragmented Dissociative Identity Disorder collective—fixate on the book, each headmate experiencing devastating horrors.

In this fusion of horror and psychological intrigue, reality and delusion blur as the hospital explodes into chaos. Patients spiral. But the book remains—waiting and planning.

Told through a razor-sharp narrative that blends psychological suspense, pitch-black humour, and a sentient narrator who might be the most dangerous character ever written, THE BOOK is a genre-defying, fourth-wall-breaking descent into madness, obsession, and the terrifying power of stories that refuse to be silenced.

You don’t read THE BOOK. It reads you.

“Equal parts thriller, supernatural fiction, and gritty noir, Katherine Black’s The Book is a wild, disorienting ride.”

“Dark, twisted, and absolutely unforgettable.”

The Review

BE WARNED. READ THIS BOOK AT YOUR PERIL. An ancient demon will possess and suck you in to do its bidding and will break your mind. You will be helpless and it has already affected one of our world leaders so do not under any circumstances read this book. Or you will pay the ultimate sacrifice.

Cough cough. Ahem. Yes. Well. When Alice, a psychiatrist, buys a box of books from eBay for the library of the psychiatric hospital she works at, one of them is a little odd. It has a nondescript green cover and it’s just titled The Book. Nothing to write home about really until she opens it and from the first page she feels a pull. And the story is oh so familiar. As time goes by, the urge to read The Book becomes obsessional. The story is always different. But then she realises the words in the book are about her and what’s going on around her. Is it predicting the future or creating events? And then The Book talks to her. Everybody believes Alice is going crazy at first when she starts raving about a possessed book. But when boyfriend Mick witnesses The Book’s power the two of them go on a journey to discover The Book’s story and to hopefully destroy it. But first it has a game of its own and Alice and Mick must follow the rules and make the ultimate sacrifice. This is a genuinely scary and suspenseful read that will leave you disconcerted and disturbed way after you have finished reading it like any great horror. The idea of having a book, The Book, as the main character is ingenious and imaginative in my humble opinion. There are sprinkles of dark humour as well and the scene where The Book was thinking one of its next victims would be a well known world leader made me chortle. It would explain a lot. READ THIS IF YOU DARE

OUT NOW!!!!!

Dr Alice Grant a psychiatrist discovers a book, a plain green cover simply titled "The Book".
This discovery completely turns Alice's life upside-down.

This is no ordinary book, this book is cursed, and has a mind of it's own and an angry vengeful mind.
Has Alice been possessed by the entity in the book, that affect her ability to do her job properly her relationships with her work colleagues and patients, also boyfriend Mick?

Can Alice break the curse as she tries to find out more about it and is set tasks to end the hold the book has on her.
Her life and others depends on her finding the answers.

The Book described by Katherine aka Sooz Simpson a huge risk of writing, my description is absolutely brilliant, this is an incredible paranormal creepy thriller, it is dark and the suspense carries on throughout.

It is fast-paced tense and scary, from page one I was hooked one was thinking has The Book taken control of me, I couldn't put it down.
The amount of detail in the settings and of the characters is exceptional and visually stunning.

This book gets my utmost recommendation.

A Genre-Defying Fever Dream
I’ve been meaning to read The Book for ages, and during a 10-minute wait for the kettle to boil, I thought I’d make a start. Well. Fast forward to my doorbell ringing and family’s arrival, expecting lunch.
I had to blame Katherine Black for the lack of preparation because I kept thinking, "one more page." Just one more. The Book held my wrist in a vice-like grip the whole way through with true tales of terrifying aristocratic monastic abuse.
Katherine Black elevated the cursed manuscript concept into a sentient narrator with a voice so perceptive that I found myself quite possessed – veering from amusement to horror.
The opening chapters floored me. Black brings to life in pristine prose the cynicism, fatigue, ancient memory, and grim humour as Dr Alice Grant is prey marked for a hunt with rules only the book understands.
The psychological suspense and supernatural dread kept me on tenterhooks.
Alice’s sessions with the dissociative identity disorder collective were chilling. Each headmate experiences THE BOOK uniquely, and the manifestations of a shared nightmare are claustrophobic, disorienting, and compelling.
The historical threads — a haunted priory, a girl trapped in the dark at 14 and a day — deepen the lore. The emerging truth about Isolde lands with the echo of centuries-long brutality, vengeance, and grief distilled into one terrifying presence.
How to describe The Book? It’s part supernatural horror, part gritty noir, part psychological thriller, part metafiction, part philosophical inquiry into trauma and religion.
Black stitches the whole thing together with a voice so bold and original, it hums with menace.
THE BOOK is dark, twisted, and unforgettable. If you want a brilliantly crafted, atmospheric story unlike anything else on the shelf, then THE BOOK is waiting.
It always is.

Review of "The Book" by Katherine Black:
Katherine Black's The Book is nothing short of a literary force, one that gripped me from the first page and refused to let go. I find myself haunted by it—unable to stop thinking about the twists, the suspense, the dark allure that pulled me in so completely. This isn’t just a book; it feels like a curse, wrapping itself around your mind until everything else fades into the background. You won’t sleep, you won’t focus on anything else, and even when you try to put it down, the pull is too strong.
The story itself is a whirlwind of shock and suspense, a relentless cascade of unexpected turns that leaves you gasping for breath. Just when you think you’ve caught your bearings, the narrative shifts in ways that are both unnerving and thrilling. The sense of unease builds with every page, making it impossible to predict what will happen next.
But there’s a darker side to The Book. It feels almost as though the story has an insidious life of its own, consuming not just the characters but the reader as well. The pull it exerts is no less powerful than a curse, and I pity the next soul who picks it up. They will be lost in its grip just as I was, unable to resist the urge to find out what happens next, no matter the cost.
In short, The Book is a masterpiece of suspense, a spine-tingling journey that will leave you craving more, even as it takes a part of you with it. I can't wait to see what comes next, but part of me is terrified for the soul that must venture into the next chapter. You’ve been warned—The Book is not just a story. It’s an experience you won’t forget.

Tantalizing Tale of Terror

This is a book that draws you into its clutches – and not just metaphorically if the story can be believed! When Dr Alice Grant buys a job lot of books for the library of the psychiatric unit where she works, little does she know this is the start of her undoing. The lot contains an innocuous-looking book with a plain green cover, possessed by a mysterious, evil sentience that latches onto Alice, causing her life to spiral out of control. However, no one, including her boyfriend, Mick, believes her when she tells them the Book is responsible for the calamities that occur on the ward, and in the lives of those who live and work there. Alice’s mounting paranoia and obsessive-compulsive behaviour is brilliantly and believably described, as she fights without success to rid herself of the Book. I found myself trying to think of different ways she could defeat it, none of which would work, which shows how skilfully the author constructed an unbeatable antagonist. As usual, Ms Black’s character creation is excellent, and I felt particularly intrigued by Thomas, the patient suffering from dissociative identity disorder, and all his different alter-egos. He’d make an interesting protagonist in his own right. The book’s conclusion is entirely unexpected and very fitting! Bravo!

Open this book at your peril. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

A common question people ask readers is, if you could go back and read a book for the first time, which book would it be? THIS ONE. This is the one.

And how ironic that the story is about a book that compels you to read. That infiltrates your thoughts and makes you think about it. Ironic because every time I put it down, I had to pick it back up again. Has Ms Black actually delved into the dark arts and cursed this text, forcing those of us who open the book to continue to the bitter end? Based on the goosebumps that erupted along my arms during reading, I’d say it’s a very real possibility.

We follow Alice, a doctor of psychiatry. She really should know better than to give into silly notions or strange feelings, but there’s something about that book. Something that compels her to pick it up. To love it. To obsess over it. To hate it. That book strips her of everything she has and she still can’t bear to part with it. She delves deep into its history and uncovers a the sinister truth about the book.

The ending blew me away. This is an absolute must read, and my new favourite. I read it on kindle, but I fully intend to add this to my physical collection.

Title, simple but the content had me transfixed!

Patients on the ward, meltdowns were the norm but not to this extent as fear gripped. Alice went about her daily routine but she became ever more distracted by a book, which seemed present at every incident, randomly appearing as if teasing. Within it's pages, it wrote about all the happenings at the hospital, verbatum, but only for Alice's eyes. Dispute her numerous attempts, she couldn't disgard the book.... it wouldn't let her!
A captivating story which ticked all the boxes of unique, obsession, emotional, fearful and without doubt brilliance. You are taken on a journey to the dark side which incorporates the past and the present, as the powerful book manifests itself through whispers, clues, detailed text, ready to show it's capabilities to ensure cooperation whenever necessary. Whilst gripped and wanting to binge read, I took my time and savoured each chapter of this thrilling storyline and loved the last two chapters, taunting the reader, genius! Really enjoyed and would highly recommend to any reader. Fantastic job!

From the very first chapter—told from the point of view of the book itself—I was hooked. I needed to know what chaos it would unleash on our main character, Dr. Alice Grant.

The story begins in a psychiatric unit, and the references to the wards, staff, and patients are handled with such care and realism that I could clearly picture Alice doing her rounds and comforting those in her care.

The pacing was also well done, never rushed, and the slow build of how the book begins to attach itself to Alice had me completely immersed. There were moments when I could feel her frustration, her fear, and her desperation to warn those around her.

I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but if you enjoy psychological thrillers, you’ll want this one on your list. It gave me serious The Ring vibes at times. In fact, the entire story played out so vividly in my mind that I kept thinking it needs to be adapted for the screen—creepy moments and all.

A haunting, well-paced read that’s definitely worth picking up.

Katherine Black’s latest literary work of art is a thriller like no other. When Alice Grant, a psychiatrist in a psych hospital, opens a box of books that she bought on eBay, she feels drawn to one particular book. It’s simply titled “The Book” and has a plain dark green cover.
However, Alice soon learns that the innocent-looking book has mysterious powers over her, her patients, and her reality. This sets the stage for a series of horrifying events that are nothing short of a blend of plot twists similar to the likes of Edgar Allen Poe and Stephen King and takes her and her partner on a journey filled with suspense and gut-wrenching horror.
Some books I’ve read leave me with a book hangover. I think this one will leave me with nightmares. This book will consume you to the finish and the ending is as unsettling as the overall plot. I loved it and highly recommend this read for great entertainment and a good scare. It deserves more than 5-stars!

What a fantastic Paranormal Thriller.
When psychiatrist Alice buys a box of old books for the hospital library there’s one book that stands out from the rest. By appearance it’s perfectly ordinary, a plain green cover and not even a proper title, just “The Book”, but something about it pulls her in and once it’s taken hold, it isn’t letting go.

Much like Alice, once I’d picked The Book up, I could not let it go, it clawed its way into my mind and I had to keep reading to find out what came next.

The Book is once again another showcase of Blacks fantastic character creation. She has a knack for creating believable characters which have so much depth and detail, right down to the minor side characters, it really makes for fantastic reading.

This is definitely not a book for the faint hearted, horrifyingly tense, impossible to predict what will happen next, pick it up, if you dare.

Repeat after me … It’s only a book.
Katherine Black has outdone herself again! The very concept of this book is a force to be reckoned with, especially for book lovers. Imagine it. A book in which a book is the antagonist. Brilliant! And so ferociously done, it pulled me in from the very first page, and I could not put it down. The haunting plot made me cringe while the suspense made me want to yell at Alice for getting in so deep with the monstrous book. The ending is spine-tingling, and I told myself “It’s only a book” again and again to the last word of it. What a vivid and thrilling story, told as only Katherine Black can do. It’s why I keep coming back for more. Don’t miss the unique and gripping novel!

As soon as I saw this Katherine Black book I had to have it; just a plain dark green cover titled 'THE BOOK'. I thought the very idea was genius. It begins in a psychiatric hospital and the characters within these walls are so well written especially the multi persona patient. This book has a powerful story that will drag you in, I was even glad I had bought the kindle version and not the hard copy. The pace; the scary situations; the brilliant evil atmosphere, on several occasions I had goose bumps and I wanted to yell at Alice to destroy this potent paranoia inducing book. I was even thinking of ways she could destroy the book, I thought it could be stopped. Hey you must read to the very last words. You have been warned.

Doctor Alice Grant could not imagine what evil she discharges when purchasing a series of books for her psychiatric hospital. One bizarre book, she becomes infatuated with as it weaves its evil influence amongst those who read it. Is she really losing her mind? We are introduced to an array of believable characters and scary incidents as Alice strives to solve the secret of the ancient book. Frightening, intriguing, atmospheric, and masterfully written, this book makes for compulsive reading. An excellent, ingenious conclusion competes the satisfaction. Superb!

Since I love reading, I just had to read a book called “The Book”. I enjoyed most if the book and was curious
where it would lead. The characters were believable and
the story kept me wondering what would happen next. There were a few twists along the way that I didn’t expect. It got a bit murky towards the end when the main characters were trying to solve some clues and I lost a little interest along the way. Luckily it managed to come together in the end. Not sure it was a solid 4 but better than a 3. 📗📖

Well, I’ve never read anything quite like ‘THE BOOK’ before. The story revolves around a cursed book that mysteriously appears in the library of a hospital psychiatric unit. Sounds straightforward? Trust me, it’s anything but. To say I had strange dreams while reading THE BOOK would be an understatement. It shocked me, scared me, and deeply unsettled me… yet I couldn’t stop reading! Equal parts thriller, supernatural fiction, and gritty noir, Katherine Black’s novel is a WILD, disorienting ride!

If you’re looking for something truly different - dark, creative, and utterly absorbing - ‘THE BOOK’ might just be what you’re looking for.

Wow, that was one tense read and a lesson to never judge a book by its cover. I don’t want to mention anything for fear of spoilers, but if you love psychological horror, then give this one a go.
