The city of Suvi was built on the bones of dragons. The Dragonborn, who once worshiped them as gods, now suffer while the king’s people flourish, content in their power as the dragon killers even as they hide from the magic beyond the city walls.
Born in the slums, Sofia joined the resistance with a sole find the lost dragons and eliminate the chief commander and kingdom that stole everything from her.
As a Dereyan soldier, Fox has never questioned his place in the kingdom. Every resistance fighter he kills brings him one step closer to avenging his brother’s death.
When their fates collide, they find themselves lost in the wilds where dark faeries hunt in the shadows and magic thrives. In a world where vengeance is the only currency, Sofia and Fox must decide if giving up on their hate is worth the price. And as they grapple with their own fates, darker things are brewing on the horizon.
Dead gods don’t stay buried.
Dragon Gods is an enthralling slow burn enemies-to-lovers romantic fantasy for fans of Spark of the Everflame and A Broken Blade. This book is for readers who love a true enemies to lovers stories with broken but determined heroes, sizzling romantic tension that burns bright but slowly, and stakes as high as the gods.
KIERSTEN MICHELE is an author and bookworm who spends her mornings, evenings, weekends, and in-between times reading. She grew up on mysteries, fantasies, historical fictions, and any other story that would take her on an adventure. Her love of reading turned into a love of writing, and she took that love to college and…got a PhD in counseling psychology. Plot twist. But when she’s not writing extremely fascinating academic articles, she’s creating stories to take her on more adventures.
Her books so far include The Mage War Chronicles, The Shadow Weaver's Gambit, and Dragon Gods.
When not tucked into her reading chair, she’s out adventuring in the real world, climbing rocks, hiking rocks, and taking way too many photos of rocks.
If there is a trope I wouldn't mind seeing sitting high up on a pedestal, it would be true enemies-to-lovers. And it is a hard one to execute perfectly—the slow, almost invisible flow of emotions of the rawest and realest kind starting from pure and utter hatred to something possibly akin to love. The long road from the deepest and darkest parts of one's soul, the search and hunt for one's inner demons, the sounds of inner walls slowly but surely crumbling down, the ever-present feeling of )+(self)doubt—these are all the threads needed to be interweaven in the most subtle of ways.
After reading Dragon Gods, Book 1 in Kiersten Michele's upcoming duology, I can honestly say she did a masterful job of bringing to life a true enemies-to-lovers story. And oh, what a story it was! Dragon Gods is an epic dark fantasy filled with hidden truths, intricate world-building, oppression, and a looming rebellion.
History is always written by the hands of the victorious ones, isn't it so? A history of the victors can also easily manipulate past events, insert lies and half-truths, and bury one's beliefs and thoughts deep, deep down. Truer words (pun intended!) couldn't have been used to describe the world Kiersten has created—a world of victors and oppressed, a world filled with darkness. So, how does one victor, raised by those lies and half-truths, begin to question everything about himself? Maybe all it takes is a rebel girl, a rainforest, and a world filled with things he believed were only myths and fairytales.
"Dead gods don't stay buried". So, what happens when they awake?
I loved all the elements of the story, Kiersten's writing style, her characters with all their nuances and layers, the action-packed parts and the parts filled with the most profound emotions. Kiersten has created a dark, dark world. But, even in the darkest parts of the night, there is still hope for the light. And the light just may be found in one's moss-coloured eyes...
Thank you, Kiersten, for gifting me the ARC and including me in the journey; I'll be holding my breath until I have Book 2 in my hands.
First of all, I just want to adjust your expectations. This is book one of a duology. While this book is about dragons, they don’t show up until halfway through the book and we don’t see them much. It is truly more about the journey to bring the dragons back as they haven’t been seen in over 100 years (more maybe?). They interact with humans at the very end. I expect they will be very present in book 2.
Summary: Sofia is dragonborn. Her people believe in the dragon gods. They used to live in the rainforest, in harmony with their environment until the king arrived and the war started. They lost and, since then, the dragonborns have been forced into submission. Considered second class citizens, kept in servitude, not allowed to read or speak their language. Sofia is part of the resistance and plans to work towards freedom for her people.
Fox is the son of the general and part of the military as well. He grew up being told that dragonborns were dragon filth. They were heretic, lazy and got what they deserved.
One day, he goes outside the wall into the rainforest to search for rebels. She is there too, hunting for food..and for soldiers. He finds her and arrests her. Her partners find her and they kidnap him. After he attempts to escape, she finds him and they are soon kidnapped by wolf shifters and carried much much deeper into the forest. Understanding that they don’t stand a chance against the creatures that lurk in the forest alone, they agree to partner up until they get back into a known area. This will be an eye opening journey for them.
🩷enemies to reluctant allies to lovers 🩷social injustices 🩷monsters, shifters, creatures 🩷feral FMC ❌not enough dragons 🐉 but I understand why
I liked how this story truly parallels what the indigenous communities have been going through with the white people.
I liked the characters, the story and the world building! The pace is moderate but fairly consistent. I will definitely read the second book when it comes out!
Dragons, shifters, world building, class divides, unique world, strong characters, and a SLOW BURN romance, really what more could you ask for in a Fantasy book. The Dragons have long been killed off (or maybe not) and the people who worship them are labeled as "dragon filth". Our FMC, Sofia, is part of the rebellion fighting against the ones who have killed all the dragons and made it illegal for them to worship the dragons. When she captures the MMC, Fox, and he ends up escaping she follows him into the forest and as much as they hate each other they also need each other to survive what the forest has instore for them.
I loved the dual POVs along with the dual timelines. This really allowed you to better understand each character not only in present day, but also from what shaped them in their past. It also added so much depth to the book and had me deeply caring about both Fox and Sofia.
This is book 1 in a series and definitely had a good amount of set up, and after finishing I appreciate that set up for the rest of the series because it's going to be epic. Also that ending! WHAT?! I need more now and I cannot wait for book 2.
Sofia is part of the Dragonborn resistance. Fox is the son of a Dereyan general. Their paths converge in the rainforest surrounding Suvi and an epic back and forth and a dangerous attraction emerges between them despite the animosity they harbor towards each other.
I knew I would like this book based on the premise and the tagline, but I was not prepared for how much I was going to love it, and there is so much to love about this book. The writing is immersive and it felt like I was walking through the rainforest alongside Fox and Sofia. The story telling unfolds in a dual timeline, showing us glimpses of the childhood experiences that shaped Sofia and Fox while we watch them become situational allies in the present.
As they encounter the elements and mythological creatures, they have to reckon with their preconceived notions and prejudices, all while grappling with the bloom of a burgeoning attraction, and I don’t think I have encountered a true enemies to lovers trope that was done so well and so realistically. Fox and Sofia are so reluctant to give into their feelings and still could not help themselves despite all of the baggage between them, and that made it so much more believable and real.
Sofia is a storm of righteous rage and is passionate about freeing her people, and I love her so much for it. She often acts with her heart leading the way, which gets her into some trouble, but I don’t think it really steers her wrong. How conflicted she was about trusting Fox in any capacity made her that much more relatable.
The cornerstone of this story is Fox’s evolution. Some of the best stories ask the question: "What do you do when you learn that all that you were told and know is a lie?” Fox, a loyal and devoted soldier for the Dereyan cause, has to come to terms with the fact that his beliefs and preconceived notions were all built on lies. He wrestles with this in the face of mounting evidence that speaks to the fact that he was sold a false narrative and does a great deal of soul searching that leads him to change his beliefs and then start working to make it right.
The thread that binds the story together is the underlying message conveyed by the politics of this world about the dangers of colonialism/imperialism and how the injustices that accumulate when one group controls the narrative, rewrites history, and overpowers those they deem unworthy is a blight on humanity. This story is incredible and I can’t wait to read the second installment.
Finding out this was a duology literally saved my rating because I was confused how everything was going to play out when at 70% the plot wasn't moving forward!
Overall, this is a good read. There is a lot of character building between the FMC & MMC throughout the book. Definitely has a lot of sad parts as its building the characters.
The romance is a SLOOOWWW burn. Like expect to be enemies for a LONGGGGG time.
Wow! What a fantastic book! I’m so happy this will be a Duology because I simply need more 🐉🖤
First off, the world building was brilliant. It immersed me into their world and sucked me in for the long haul. I swear I could visually see & smell the slums. Making the lavish life portrayed on the other side anger me.
The FMC & MMC, Sofia & Fox, were so fun to get to know. Each of them were carved into who they are because of the “kings” and the brutality of the lives they were both forced to live.
In this story, dragons are gods. Long extinct and the cause being the Dereyans, human kings, also known as the “king gods”. The hatred towards dragons and the Dragonborn humans is volatile. Those who still worship the dragon gods are hunted and killed publicly. Simply put, this naturally caused a hidden rebellion. One I’m happy to join & fight alongside.
This story was so much fun to read and had me turning pages instead of adulting lol. I loved it. I’m anxiously awaiting book two and will definitely be following this Author’s beautiful writing!😍
I was lucky to receive an eARC of this book, and it was very enjoyable! I think the middle could have been thinned out a bit, but the beginning and ends were very quick paced and the cliffhanger was effective haha, I’ll definitely be back for book two. Do not go into this thinking you’re getting a Romantasy; this is definitely heavy on the fantasy with some light spice and a budding romance.
Thank you to Kiersten Michele for giving me the opportunity to review an advanced reader copy of Dragon Gods!
The dedication: “To anyone who’s felt rage deep enough to wake a dragon”
The political and social climate in Dragon Gods is reflective of the times and gave me all the feels.
“It shouldn’t be your responsibility to convince your government of your humanity.”
Sofia is a strong FMC who does what she must to help herself and her people survive.
“They only cared that she dared to fight back.”
Fox is a soldier and son of an army general. He aims to rid his city of rebels and rise in the ranks of the army.
“He stepped closer to her, forcing the dagger a bit deeper into his skin. It stung, but he ignored it, wrapping his hand around her throat, just hard enough he could feel her swallow beneath his grip.”
The slow burn tension in this book is top notch. I have SO many highlighted quotes of moments between Sofia and Fox that are just *chefs kiss*
Read this book if you enjoy: 🐉 A slow burn romance 🖤 Enemies to lovers 🐉 Shifters, faeries, & dragons! 🖤 Forbidden magic 🐉 Political unrest
Dragon Gods publishes on May 13th. I received a free early copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
3.5 / 5 Stars Look, I love any sort of fantasy with dragons, so I was immediately sold on the concept of this book. And it turned out to be a really solid story with a sprinkle of romance!
The synopsis in layperson terms: Sofia is a Dragonborn rebel. Her people once worshipped the dragons before the king put a stop to that and literally segregated the Dragonborn from the Dereyan. Dragonborn folks live on the outskirts of the city in poverty and serve the richer Dereyan while the Dereyan raid and execute anyone who even looks like they might still be worshipping dragons. The rebels move between the city and the nearby rainforest, plotting on how to overthrow the king, commander general and anyone in his army, which sometimes involves bombing and killing innocent civilians. It's a complicated war.
Sofia captures Fox, a Dereyan soldier and the son of a big General. Soon they are forced to survive in the rainforest together as they encounters shapeshifters, faeries, and other creatures that make them both question their complete and unwavering devotion to their side.
I thought this book was incredibly well written. With many moving pieces, folklore, and different settings, I think that Kiersten Michele did a great job of making it really easy to understand everything that was happening, especially where you were in space and what that space looked like. The world building was really thorough and detailed.
I also enjoyed the chapters that jumped back in time to see Sofia and Fox at different ages. Those chapters always started with a quote from a history book or storybook from this realm. For example, we get quotes from a book called "Assimilation or Elimination" that showcased the clear propaganda about the Dragonborn and why they are less than. I appreciated the cultural context mixed with Sofia and Fox's personal context as a way to better understand the world and the characters. The only hard part was that the jumps in time were not chronological (so sometimes you would get a chapter of Fox at age 15 and then one at age 8), which meant that you would have to remember at what age major life events occurred at what age in order to understand how this fit into their life.
I also enjoyed the relationship between Sofia and Fox. The romance is really a subplot and because it is true enemies to lovers (they genuinely want to murder each other for a good chunk of the book), it doesn't really start developing until more than half way through the book. That being said, I am a sucker for even a crumble of romance so I loved it. Sofia and Fox start out with every black and white thinking and by seeing the humanity in each other, they are able to adapt and grow as people.
I did find the book to be a bit slow at times. I think because the world building is so thorough, sometimes the pacing felt slow because there was a focus on setting the scene instead of moving the scene forward. Even though there is a lot of action, it took me a little while to get into it.
That being said, this book sets up the next book perfectly and I am excited for the second book!
Thank you Kiersten Michele for providing the eARC! All opinions are my own. __________________ Pre-Read Thoughts: Get these motherfucking dragons into my brain immediately. Also the cover is BEAUTIFUL.
Thank you to Kiersten Michele for entrusting me with an early copy!
First in a duology (book 2 coming end of 2025!) Dual POV, feminine rage, rebellion, enemies to lovers, shifters, faeries (not the good kind), tragic backstories, they save each other, corrupt kingdom, dying land, flashbacks, cliffhanger!
Dedication: "To anyone who’s felt rage deep enough to wake a dragon."
Sofia and Fox are fighting for what they believe in. And for revenge. But they are on opposite sides of the conflict. Sofia is a Dragonborn, one of a people who worshiped the dragon gods and who are now treated as slaves. Abused as a child by people high in the king's military, she wants personal revenge as well as revenge for those who have been slain along the way. Fox has grown up a disappointment to his general father, but he is doing all he can to take the place of his brother and make his father proud of him. While he is out hunting rebels, he ends up at their mercy. But what happens when he starts to fall for a Dragonborn and finally sees their side of the story?
Something I didn't realize while reading - which is so cool - is the timeline of the flashbacks (skip the rest of this paragraph if you don't want to know!). Sofia's go forward in time through her journey of becoming a rebel and Fox's go back in time to show his brainwashing coming undone.
This book was also a bit different in that neither of the MCs were particularly powerful or in charge. They were both on the younger side, but both quite passionate and full of hate for the other side. Their growth through the book was quite the journey. The romance was on the low side though there was definite tension, one spicy scene, and lots of denied feelings for a bit. The end of the book was a wild ride and oh the cliffhanger! Can't wait for book 2!
I've been in a bit of a reading slump, and the thought of venturing into a new adventure, by someone who contributed and brought to life City of Mages and Canyon of Crystal... I *may* have had high expectations going into this book.
It's very fortunate that I can say, without fail, that Kiersten Michele ticked everything I wanted. Every. Single. Box.
This book developed and produced a chef's-kiss version of a true enemies-to-lovers. The characters are fleshed out well, and it's extremely clear how much thought and love Kiersten put into creating each of them, bringing them to life and painting an action-filled adventure for us.
And the SLOW BURN. I knew what I would be getting into from her previous books, but this was DELICIOUSLY written, and I found myself grinning like a fool while reading.
Another example of a well-written, amazingly built world, once again. I eagerly await Book 2.
Just to let you know I received this as an ebook ARC. :)
I think all in all this is good book with good story, premise and slow burn romance (do not pick this as a romance book there is more plot than romance albeit this does have one spicy scene). Good writing and I didn't mind the jumping from present to past and over again. There is a good cliff hanger that will keep me reading the next book but... But.. Time to time this book felt loooong. There was no tension or enough interesting plot to keep me gobbling this up. It took me almost week to read (which is pretty slow for me). The start was good and the end but in the middle.. just meh. I do feel like we get more action in second book, hopefully.
p.s. Trivia, in Finnish language the word suvi means Summer and can also be girls name.
4.75 ⭐️ (rounding up to 5) Thank you for an eARC opportunity to provide an honest review. What a great opening to a duology! A lot of books are marketed as enemies-to-lovers these days, and I’m happy to say that Kiersten writes as advertised. The characters are well developed, strong yet relatably flawed. I found myself getting attached to them quickly due to the detail interspersed throughout in their flashback chapters despite the slow burn tension that sizzles (reminiscent to Spark of the Everflame, which I also loved). There’s minimal spice in this book and I admire that the relationship stands on its own. Dual POV is paced well, the back-and-forth is every few chapters to prevent whiplash. The action scenes are clearly described throughout, though the end really packs a punch. Some surprising twists makes a great setup for the finale. Minor critique some unanswered questions towards the end but I also believe they’re being saved for the conclusion. I can’t wait until the next one comes out! My favorite ARC read thus far!
GUYSSSS THIS WAS SOOO GOOD WHAT. this deserves so much hype. If there’s one trope I love it’s enemies to lovers, and we get a TRUE enemies to reluctant allies with attraction??? in this one. (Ok im sure the “lovers” is coming but it’s slowwwww burn). We got dead dragon gods, a rebellion, trauma and flashbacks, dual pov, forced proximity, and some spice - everything you could want in a good fantasy. The world building was really unique, but well done. The characters were diverse and lovable (Fox is kind of Chaol coded to me). I was absolutely hooked into this story from start to finish. And the ending??? Ahh I cannot WAIT for the next book.
If you need a good fantasy with a side of romance and a badass fmc, this is your sign to pick this up!
Wow! I loved this book so much! Work and kids have been crazy the last 2 weeks, so I couldn’t finish this book as fast as I would have liked! I had 6 hours of flights this week and therefore uninterrupted time to READ.
I loved the character development of Sofia and Fox - normally I’m not a huge fan of going back and forth in time BUT I think it was really well executed here. I feel like every chapter really contributed to my understanding of the characters and the Kings vs Dragons God dynamic.
I seriously can’t wait until book 2! After reading book 1 though I’m a little surprised (disappointed??) that this will only be a duology. With how much set up and world building there is I really think this could be a 4+ book series!!
I was so grateful to receive an ARC for Dragon Gods and it did NOT disappoint! I tend to be hesitant with fantasy novels as I find they often are too similar to other stories, have gaps in their world building, or don’t have the character depth I look for. Safe to say this was NOT the case with this story! As we dove into the story, it wove in the history of Wueco, through both memories and “myths”. I felt fully entrenched in the scene that was set and felt the stakes that had been set up. Fox and Sophia were complex, flawed, and lovable as I watched their decisions unfold with the lens of their upbringing through flashbacks. Safe to say I am pumped to continue on with the rest of the series!
I received this book as ARC, and by the dragons, am I happy I signed up.
Well written story for those who love reading about adventure, enemies to more, magic, and folklore. I was captivated by the rich world building and the way difficult themes were woven into the history of the land and its people.
The author kept me quessing the whole time as to how the story would end. At 85%, I still wasn't sure where it was going, really well done. The unpredictability added to the suspense, I just couldn't put the book down!
Loved this story!! It had all the best elements for a stormy romantasy; enemies to lovers! It was gritty and rough and I enjoyed that, it added some seriousness and vulnerability to the story! It was also an extremely unique story that I constantly had no idea what was in store for the plot! I look forward to the next book, hoping my girl gets her revenge for dragons-sake!
Thank you to the author for the eARC of this book. This review was left voluntarily and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
I am FERAL over this book. F E R A L. Kiersten Michele has created a truly unique and lush world, full of rich history, glimpses of a once vibrant culture and complex beliefs that I simply could not get enough of. The oppression of the Dragonborn people had me seething with rage at both every large and small injustice they faced, and the deep, lonely anger that the FMC Sofia is brimming with was visceral in her every thought and action. The MMC Fox is truly unlikeable at the start; a bootlicking, military brat full of privilege and bigotry and it was just utterly delicious to see his layers and beliefs slowly peeled away before being ripped out of him entirely. Sofia and Fox's shared-but-separate past and the flashbacks to their respective childhoods beautifully set the tone for the decades worth of violence and hate they have both endured on opposite sides of life, and their slow-burn, absolutely enemies-to-lovers (and I say lovers in the physical sense because at this point I'm not even sure if they like each other yet) romance is just so gorgeous and human. I loved watching them both challenge each other and their whole respective worldviews at every turn.
I truly cannot express in words how good this book was. I will absolutely be getting a physical, trophy copy for my shelves once it is released and I will conclude this review by BEGGING you to give this book a chance. Read it immediately. You won't regret it.
Also there's dragons, if that isn't reason enough to give it a read then I don't know what is!
Dragons… Natives to a Rainforest… mythical creatures… TRUE enemies to lovers (executed perfectly), danger, action, pain, beauty, a hint of spice (not to much and not to little). I loved this book, devoured it. Dual POVs are my favorite and the back and forth from present to past also made me understand the characters and their relationships with others better. The banter had me kicking my feet and when they finally kissed, oh I was straight GRINNING!!
The fearlessness and passion Sofia has throughout the whole book is my favorite thing. She’s a Bad-A top tier FMC and I think I love her the most out of all the characters. She is who she is and she never changes. Beautifully feisty! I also thought it was admirable of her to set aside her feelings of Foxs Father and see Fox separately after she got to know him.
I am very happy I was chosen as an ARC reader for this. This was right up my alley and I’m looking forward to Dragon Gods 2 cause oh boy did I not see these plot twists and cliffhangers at the end!! When Vato showed up I was like YESSSS let’s kick some kingsman booty! And Fox— ugh I need the second book like yesterday!
I absolutely adored this book! Kiersten did a great job of developing her characters. While reading about Fox from Sofia’s POV, I found it hard to sympathise with him, but reading his POV I really did sympathise with him. Such great writing of the characters. I did find that the writing of the slow burn between Sofia and Fox could have been more engaging.
The plot of the story was fantastic. When I thought it would go one way, it went another. It definitely kept me guessing and the ENDING! THE ENDING!!! It just left me wanting more. I’m really looking forward to book 2!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
this story was just ok for me. was a little to slow for me. i finished it but I did get bored half way through it and had to push through. I prefer more plot twist and less descriptions. I understand it was world building but some pages were to long for this. I do wish the author well as I am sure many other will enjoy this book.
I wanted to LOVE this book. I just liked it. Yes it was epic and yes it's very well-written. In case you are wondering it's structured this way - PAST - Page of "history book" - 3rd person POV -/ PRESENT. It works relatively well. I'm not a fan of jumping from past to present but that's a "me" problem. I liked the beginning and I loved the end - the cliffhanger is mind-blowing. But some chapters felt a bit too long and dragging in the middle.
The characters are interesting and I'm looking forward to reading more about them in book 2.
There is romance but don't pick this book for the romance. It's a slow (so slow) burn and it's more about the plot than the romance.
I received an e-copy of this book from the author. Thank you for the opportunity. This review is my own and I'm leaving it voluntarily.
Kiersten Michele put THINGS into this book that made me FEEL?!?! HOW VERY DARE! Y’all this one isn’t to be missed. True enemies to lovers, dragons (duh) & other creatures, VERY slow burn, forced proximity, feminine rage, general rage, & political but not boring (anyone care for a rebellion?). The world building was intricate yet easy to understand. Sofia is HOT and Fox is HOT (notice how I put the FMC first bc I love her so much?). Cannot wait for book 2!
I don't want to ALARM anyone, but this is the kinda book that my romantasy girlies will eat up with a spoon. This is the kind of romantasy that absolutely devours you. This is for all my Booktok and Bookstagram girlies who’ve been burned one too many times by books that say they’re enemies to lovers but end up being “he gave me a mildly annoyed glance once and now we’re soulmates.” Yeah. Not here. This is the real deal.
What the author nails is the slow burn. The kind where two broken people—on opposite sides of a conflict, no less—are forced into survival mode together. There’s mutual hatred, yes. There’s violence and betrayal and messy emotional baggage. But there’s also this flickering sense of MAYBE, the blurring of lines, and the quiet realization that they're maybe not so different in how those in power have abused them. Their connection starts with shared pain, not attraction. And when that moment of temptation hits, it doesn’t feel like a trope—it feels earned. Painful. Complicated. Human. The lonely people choose themselves just for a moment, even if it will likely not change their futures.
If you liked The Jasad Heir or The Hurricane Wars but wanted a little more bite, this is your book. We get deep insight into both Sofia and Fox—their trauma, their loyalties, the way they begin to fracture under the pressure of who they’re “supposed” to be. The enemies part never vanishes completely, and that makes the romance so much better. It simmers. It aches. It demands sacrifice.
Now, fair warning: there are some moments where the power dynamics might raise an eyebrow or two, and I totally see the critique there. There’s a specific stretch where Fox lets Sofia suffer longer than I was comfortable with, even though he eventually makes it right. It's a thin line, and the book mostly walks it well, but it’s worth noting.
But oh man, I flew through this. It's compelling, darkly magical, and emotionally satisfying. The world—built on the bones of gods and soaked in grief—is so rich. And that final act? Incredible. I’m obsessed and absolutely ready for more. If you love your romantasy with sharp edges, moral messiness, and a ship you can actually root for, grab this immediately.
Thank you so, so much to the author for the complimentary copy! It was a pleasure to read this book!
I didn't know what to expect when I started reading Dragon Gods as it didn't have a lot of reviews, but wow, I'm glad I picked this one up! I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would and it deserves a lot more love and hype. I ended up finishing this in a single day, sacrificing a few hours of sleep.
I'm a big fan of enemies to lovers if it's done well, but unfortunately, I've found myself disappointed more often than not. The enemies turn to lovers too quickly, the attraction too obvious from the start, the two main characters not staying enemies for very long, if they ever were. However, in Dragon Gods I feel like it's really well done and it didn't annoy me as other books often tend to do. The characters were reasonable and not stupid, their actions believable instead of stupid simply as a way of moving the plot forward. There were misunderstandings, but it never dragged on and felt very plausible.
Normally, I'm not a fan of dual POV, as I feel like the male POV tend to eventually become the male character worshipping the FMC and having no real storyline or personality of his own, but this too was well done in this book. Fox actually felt like his own person instead of only existing for the FMC, and it felt like a breath of fresh air. The dragons don't have that big of a presence in this book, only the first in a duology, which I just felt added to the mystery of them.
Sometimes, I read a book with an intruiging concept but then I feel myself wanting to change the plot, wishing it had been done differently; this book is what I imagine I would have written (if I were an author, of course). Loved it. I came to love Fox (and Sofia), as well as the supporting characters, and I can't wait for the second book!
-I really liked this book. I truly didn’t think I would have enjoyed it as much as I did but here we are. Immediately there was some intrigue to the story and I couldn’t get enough. I really liked the universe of the opposing societies, one being oppressed by a kingdom and in the middle of it a relationship blooms. It sounds exactly like the type of book I would have read when I first started reading and I loved every minute of it. There was a lot of action from being captured, escape, being captured again, escaping again, there was a lot going on so I’m glad that the book was a decent length so that it didn’t feel rushed like many book I read.
-I loved the characters. They were snarky and had such a fun dynamic because they are from enemy groups and both believe that their side is right and better than the other. It was so fun to read their banter especially seeing them in the same situation together but then switching sides from time to time. I had a lot fo fun raiding their development into a romantic relationship. I do wish it was a little less lustful but then that’s just my preference of what to read.
-I thought this book was a standalone, so imagine my surprise when there were only a few pages left and the story wasn’t anywhere near towards the end. I think it helped a bit with my curiosity. I was expecting a full story and now that I havent gotten that, I am so intrigued and really want to the read the sequel. The book left off at a very high stakes moment so I truly feel a need to get the full story.
Dragons, dragons, dragons. Solid dose of feminine rage. Dragons. Slow burn, low spice, enemies-to-lovers. Did I mention dragons? Gut-punching emotional past/present POVs.
DRAGONS.
(also maybe a cliffhanger... shhhh... duology...)
DRAGON GODS, the debut novel from Kiersten Michele (actually a writing duo), is a classic, magical fantasy in a dark and dying world, with a subtle slow burn romantic subplot. We get shifters, dark faeries, an in-depth world build with political/religious themes, and an interesting spin where those who worship dragons are "dragon filth".
I always love a book that uses dual POVs to truly tell a story from two sides, and not just to get the interiority of two characters. That multi-perspective is really important in this world where both sides have experienced atrocities and are out for revenge, with our characters serving as representatives of the greater conflict.
The journey you go on with Sofia and Fox, as they peak beyond what they think they know of the other, walks that full spectrum of hatred to tender empathy. Creating a relationship that evolves genuinely, with heart, as they grow and evolve themselves.
