That is why I've brushed off this specific player who has continued to try to get my attention. The thing with this specific player is that he can't stand my brother. His teammate. And I can't stand him.
Colton Wheeler is persistent, and even if it's just using me to get under my brother's skin, he's determined to wear me down. The chemistry between us is tangible, no matter how much I want to deny it.
But the more I learn about him, the more I feel there may be a pull that is more than just physical. I want to continue to hate him, but it's getting harder to remember the reasons I should.
Madi is 20 something trying to figure out what “adulting” is. Madi has been writing stories since she was a teenager she continues to express all her emotions in her writing. She’s also an avid reader. Madi lives in the PNW where she attended college after moving from the unforgiving heat of Arizona. Madi spends her free time with her husband, daughter and family of pets (3 dogs and 2 cats).
PLEASE READ MY REVIEW Okay I want to start out with the fact that I have never left a review for a book before, let alone feel the need to. And tbh I felt the need to leave a review for this book before the halfway mark. Now you may be asking, who am I to critique an authors work? I’m not a writer, and could never be one. So let me quickly share my background. I have read over 30 hockey romance books, i only read books with smut, and i had the biggest wattpad phase as a young girl. Now that’s out of the way, let get into it.
When I first found this book on TikTok, I went straight to Goodreads to read the reviews and see what it’s about. I read it’s enemies to lovers which I would die for, tons of spice, playboy mmc, feisty fmc, and tons of fun banter. I said to myself sign me the fuck up this is the book I dream of, this is what I need. I tried finding the book everywhere until I decided to just buy kindle unlimited bc I knew I HAD to read it asap, and here I am.
I think the author let a teenager “edit” this book, if it even went through an editor because there is no way a professional editor would read what I just read and say yep! Good to go! The author needs to fire their editor and publisher. I had to reread sentences so many times, sometimes even out loud to fully comprehend them. The amount of syntax errors and lack of punctuation marks, mostly commas, was driving me insane and it made me feel for my friends when I don’t use commas in my texts. There was also a lot of breaks in the chapters, we never fully got to go through a storyline, and when one storyline was over we’d jump into a new one and the same chapter. A bit wattpadish.
Enemies to lovers? No. Enemy to the fmc to lovers? Yes. She hated him, he didn’t hate her.
I am a die hard smut girl. I need to live vicariously through the fmc. There was tons of smut which I loved but at some points it felt like Colton, the mmc, was doing too much, a bit forceful at times. Have I read books with less/worse sex scenes? Yes. Have I read better? Yes. But the one thing that really disappointed me was when the mmc figures out he loves her. Like why? You barely know each other. You haven’t gone on ANY dates. Does the mmc say all the right things? Yes. But I need more a little more plot, I need to really watch the mmc fall in love. All they did in their secret relationship was have sex and I’m talking atleast 83% of the book. TBH I got bored of the same sex and the same words being used just mixed around each time. if you just want sex read this book.
I love enemies to lovers banter I yearn for it. She was fun and bratty and like I said he was saying alllll the right things. 7.5/10 on the banter scale.
Lastly, I want to preface that I have not read chandler and her fucking three musketeers book and I don’t think I ever will. I HATE HATE HATE that storyline. She’s dating THREE?? Hockey players?? THREE?? Like there is no way she does not like one more than the otherS. It seems selfish to me and I hate reading the parts they are in. AND the fact that one of them is the fmc brother?? No. I would literally hate if I had a brother and he was in a relationship with a girl and two other men. Does she really need all three? I’d think my brother wasn’t truly loved and was just used to fulfill her fantasies. And then the girlfriend has the audacity to make sexual comments that involves her brother around the fmc, the sister?? That is just disgusting and rude in my opinion. If it was a two person relationship sure whatever, but the fact that she’s making these comments about fmc brother knowing it’s just not them two? I’ve never hated anything more.
My first BUT NOT last from Madi!!! Wow. The banter? The tension? The spice? I read it in less than 12 hours start to finish.
If you want E N E M I E S to lovers? 100% for you!!!

eARC review 6 ⭐️ 3.5 🌶️
😮💨 oh. My. God. I’m in love with Colton Wheeler. It’s not often I read book in under 12 hours anymore, but I sure did with this one!!! I couldn’t put it down, and for good reason.
The banter. THE BANTER!! Was *chef’s kiss*. I was full on howling and crying at some parts just from laughing at them going back and forth.
Rival’s sister is one of those tropes that’s just gonna do it for me every 👏🏼 single 👏🏼 time👏🏼. They h8 each other, but they want each other and the tension is just TOO good.
There’s so much spice in this. And it’s QUALITY. But there’s also a solid plot with plenty of side characters to love! It’s everyone from the previous books.
I absolutely devoured this book. It’s phenomenal, there’s not a single thing I’d change!
Tropes: pro hockey • rival’s sister • he falls first • reformed player • black cat x golden retriever • boy obsessed • forced proximity • true enemies to lovers
This was one of my favorite books for banter! It was so spot on. The constant bratty, bully, spicy talk between the two was so funny and just fit them so well.
This was the last in the series but definitely was perfectly fine being read as a stand alone. It just made me excited to go back and read the other books to learn more about the relationships and dynamics of the others.
I really enjoyed this hockey romance so much and am kind of sad it’s over!
🌟 Hockey romance 🌟 Brother’s teammate 🌟 Grumpy/ sunshine 🌟 Bratty Banter 🌟🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ 🌟 Tatted MMC 🌟 He falls first
Have I read this book twice already (it’s not even out yet) why yes, yes I have because it’s just THAT DAMN GOOD.
Colton and Brynne have my entire heart. Listen this man is an a$$hole of the highest caliber at first, but dear lord did I love him from the word go. And then when he opened up, and fell SO HARD he was just the right level of bossy to make me melt into a puddle on the ground.
TROPES ⬇️
🩷 Enemies to Lovers 🩷 Teammate’s Sister 🩷 Friends with Benefits 🩷 He Falls First 🩷 A three legged cat
Listen, Colton is a new trade to the Denver Dragons, and he has no plans to make friends on his new team, especially with his captain’s little sister who dislikes him from her previous interactions with him. Well this man simply wants what he can’t have, and what he can’t have is Brynne Collee. Too bad she is all he wants.
The banter was so on point with this, and these two were at each other’s throats, and it had to be the hottest thing I’ve read in a while. These enemies were enemy-ing and I was here for every moment.
But what I loved more even than the forbidden aspect of their relationship, was that they really at the their core were two lonely people that needed someone to see them. This man falls so hard even before he realized it and I loved every second of the journey.
Also Madi said “how can I make this even hotter than my last book” and then she did the dang thing. Like brain chemistry altered. It was so so good. All I’m going to say is THE BIKE SCENE (you’re welcome)
I love Madi’s writing. It’s funny and sucks you in and it’s easy to get lost in her characters. Brynne and Colton might just be my favorite of her yet.
My first Madi Danielle’s book but not my last. I need to go back and read the previous books in this series because I loved all the characters. But this enemies-to-lovers story surprised me in the best ways.
Colton is a big a-hole most of the story, unrelenting at times but in such a playful way that I couldn't hate him. As his feelings turn, the banter continues and is taken up a notch. It's so fantastic how they riff off each other. And Brynn is such a dynamic and fun FMC. I loved how she pushes back on Colton. There is hate sex and then there is Brynn & Colton’s hate sex. The spice is top notch and I am here for it. Plus we get a little dom/sub action. I enjoyed this one so much and I can't wait to go back and devour the first three Denver Dragons books.
🏒 Hockey Romance ➶ Brother's Teammate & Rival 💖 Enemies to Lovers ❣️ He fall first & hard ❤️🔥 Praise & Degradation 🔥 "Good Girl" ➶ Secret/Forbidden Romance ✌🏻 Dual POV
The Break Out is a steamy enemies-to-lovers hockey romance featuring Colton, a hockey player, and Brynn, the sister of his team's captain. The story revolves around their intense chemistry as they navigate an undeniably passionate and physical relationship, marked by dominance and praise/degradation dynamics. The novel is packed with spice from their first encounter, as Colton's desire to be with Brynn plays a central role in their relationship, which quickly becomes all-consuming.
If you're a fan of high heat romances with a strong focus on the power dynamics between characters, this book will likely captivate you. The pacing keeps readers engaged, especially if you're drawn to trope-heavy romances, where a forbidden connection is given a sensual, intense twist.
🏒Hockey Romance 🏒Enemies to Lovers 🏒Brother’s Teammate 🏒Brother’s Rival 🏒Tattooed MMC 🏒Praise and Degradation
I am loving the hate to love relationship that starts with Brynn and Colten.. I also feel deeply for what Brynn goes through when she has alone time to think the spiraling she does just makes you want to reach through the pages and hug and tell it will be okay one day your going to find true happiness just like everyone else has! I do know from everything Brynn’s been through Evie will be one lucky niece!! On another note the spicy in this book when it hits it hits and goes all the way to the last chapters.
If I could give it more stars, I would! Back with another splendid blend of kickass playlist, great story progression (including some catch ups with your favourite characters from her other books), and a perfect amount of spice - The Break Out does not disappoint.
Was my first book after stopping because of pregnancy and I loved it so much. Simple, straight forward and spice for days 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ was a feel good book.
I'll preface this review by saying 1) I absolutely loved The Power Play so I went into this book with high hopes and 2) if you go into this book purely for the smut, you'll be pretty happy with it.
I think this book needed another round or two of editing, and then it would have been a really good book. The smut was there, but the characters lacked the depth they needed to make this HEA make sense. Was there a ton of lust? Oh yes. I didn't doubt that. I just doubted that they 'healed' one another when they only had one emotional talk throughout the whole book, and I can't even remember them really doing anything nice for one another. But I wouldn't have even noticed this if the actual writing had been a bit more consistent.
A lot of the sentences were formatted weirdly. Like a period would break up a sentence in a weird spot, making it into two incomplete sentences. I ended up having to go back and reread sentences a good bit because of the way they were formatted - my brain just couldn't comprehend them. And then we had a lot of switching between past and present tense in the same paragraph. Both of these things happened throughout a lot of the book, and it really took me out of the story. I know this is an arc, so I'm hoping some of these things were caught before the book was officially released, but these are things that are typically fleshed out already before arcs go out, so I'm not sure if they would have been.
I'm conflicted on whether or not to recommend this one. If you want smut, and the writing issues were resolved by the final publication, then I say yes, go for it. If you're wanting a smutty book with plot, eh.
**This was a gifted arc from The Author Agency & Madi Danielle.
The Break Out by Madi Danielle was my first book in this series and by Danielle! Even as a first time reader, I felt like the book and characters were easy to follow and the story made sense- even though there were pieces that I wish I had more details on. The previous couples were heavily integrated into this current story, but it didn't take away from Colton and Brynn.
The spice was spicing in this book big time, and for me that was the best part. The bed chem between these two was scorching, and the hidden tattoo had me laughing and sweating at the same time. There were also a *lot* of spicy scenes once you hit about 40% I think. I also enjoyed the hockey black sheep story as well, I liked how Colton was a good hockey player but somehow still felt like a fish out of water with his new team.
The characters were ok, I liked Brynn but didn't love her backstory. I think there is going to be a lot more from the Collee family to come that will fill out the story and round out the backstory a bit more which will definitely help. And unfortunately, I didn't hurt for Colton enough to get over his asshole attitude. He didn't redeem himself enough for me, and I didn't care for the writing style of the author. I did like the author's voice and enjoy her storytelling, but the overuse of commas drove me nuts.
Overall, I wish I was into why choose because I think this series would have been better if I started from the beginning. While I can see the appeal for other readers and appreciated the plot and most character arcs, I think this book was simply not for me.
Brynn has zero interest in dating hockey players, especially cocky little shits like a Colton Wheeler. She knows Colton is just in it for the thrill of the chase. Colton loves Brynn’s smart mouth and attitude and can’t wait until she submits to him.
“Her eyes roll, and fuck I want to keep track of each time she does that and make sure once I get her in my bed, she gets her ass spanked for every fucking time.” 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️.5
Woooooooooo that was a spicy one! Not going to lie, I couldn’t stand Colton at first. I couldn’t understand why he was such a dick, for literally no reason! I was totally on Brynn’s side when she turned him down, but you could tell she was into Colton, even though he was an ass. Neither of them could really even understand this pull they had towards each other, but slowly “just one time”, turns into “just one more”, until they’re staying longer and longer, not wanting the other to go, scared of what this could mean. When Colton confesses to Brynn that she has brought him out of the dark, I was a goner for Colton.
“Do you want kids?” He asks. I’ve wanted a family for as long as I can remember, “I don’t know,” I say softly. “Do you?” Colton reaches out, running his knuckle along my cheek. “I want whatever you want.”
First and foremost I want to thank Madi for not only giving me a chance to sensitivity beta read but also be an arc team member. I will never quit the Denver dragons. You will have to pry these books from my cold dead hands. Which will never happen. Madi has a way of creating a world that is full and well designed. I love love love these two. I thought it couldn’t get better than the power play but boy was I wrong. Brynn is me. I can’t tell you why but she is the hyper independent wants to do it all on her own and doesn’t need anything from anyone and damn her learning to let go of that was a growth point for me. And now listen I am Matt’s biggest fan from the first book but Colton? That might be my man. I am gonna fight for that one. The spice? Stunning The romance? Demure The growth of both characters? Top notch quality steady growth The banter? Oh boy panties demolished. The mouth on Colton should be considered a weapon. Anyways go read this.
Please check your content and trigger warnings of the book!
Who else is weak when it comes to persuasion? We all know how persuasive MMCs can be and I’m sure most of us have a list of the top favorite ones. This book? Oh, yes, it pushed itself on that list because now when I think about persuasion, I’ll have no choice but to think of Colton Wheeler from this point on.
The way he’s so fucking smooth with his words and actions. The chase?!!!! My heart!!! Oh! And he’s a hockey player, rides a bike, tattooed, 6’5”, and dirty mouthed. 🧎🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️ Also, y’all know I’m all in for the good ol “baby, and sweetheart” but this man calls her Princess… I can’t. 😮💨🫠🫠🫠
-Enemies to Lovers -Brother’s Teammate -Hockey Romance -He falls first -Banter
I have no idea how to rate this because it feels like it was written by two different people. The dialogue, banter and spice in this book was electric. Like insane, adored, devoured!! Everything else was terrible. There's no plot, the writing between the dialogue was stunted, flat and childlike. The characters didn't really have any goals or life quirks, just depressing backstories that are kind of glossed over. The other relationships are a little weird in this to me, mainly her brother's quadruple situation, but that's just a personal preference so I don't let that effect my rating. So yeah, confused on how to rate this cause if the whole thing was just dialogue back and forth I would have loved it a lot more.
Big thanks to Madi for the opportunity to read and provide a fair review! I truly loved this read, getting into Brynn and Colton’s mutual closed off ness and emotional traumas from their respective childhoods had my heart clenching - and yes tears.
Colton’s asshole reputation and his defense mechanism at a first glance had me very interested to delve into his mind further. The banter between Brynn and Colton, and their push and pull was unmatched. All the “I hate you” “it turns me on” moments were so good.
This book serves all the forbidden, enemies to lovers, and spicy vibes & i’m a huge fan!! Can’t wait for more from Madi.
I always know that I am going to have a good time reading a Madi Danielle book and The Break Out was no exception.
I absolutely devoured this one and read in less than 24 hours. The tension and banter between Brynn and Colt I think is the best in any of Madi’s books so far. And cannot forget to mention top tier spice as always when it comes to a Madi book. Madi seriously has a talent to make me absolutely hate a character and absolutely love them by the end. Bc colt was a serious douche at the beginning but at the end he was a total simp for Brynn and he made me melt. If you are looking for a true enemies to lovers hockey romance this is it.
Overall: 4 Spice: 3.5
Tropes: - Hockey Romance - Brother’s Teammate - Enemies to Lovers - He Falls First - Grumpy x Sunshine
The Break Out is part of the Hat Trick series, but it can be read as a standalone.
Colton was broody, grumpy, and just all-around unlikable. He was angry that he was traded to a new team, the Denver Dragons, and he wasn’t interested in forming friendships. But he did have an interest in Brynn, his team captain’s sister.
The banter between these two was so good! And the tension? The “hate”? So. Good.
I also love when the grumpy MMC falls HARD, and Colton may have been a total a**hole, but once he fell for Brynn, he changed. He was still an a**hole, but he wasn’t so grumpy with his teammates. And he had some sweet moments as well.
The spice in this? HOT. Just. Whew.
I loved seeing the characters from the previous books again, and I’m sad the series is over. But I’m excited to see what’s next.
Brynn and Colton are meant to be!! It may have taken them some time to realize it, but it was so worth it. Beneath all the dirty looks and smart remarks is the sweetest love story. They helped each other overcome hidden traumas and taught each other unconditional love and friendship. The more Brynn and Colton got to know it each, the harder it became to keep saying they didn’t like each other. I loved the banter and tension between them. The chemistry between them was explosive!
whew!! another great madi book!! i think this might be my favorite denver dragons book!
this is how a good enemies to lovers is written! no one was mean & everything about it was so playful & fun. brynn & colton had the best banter and their back & forth was perfect!
the spice??? it spiced so hard omg
and seeing so many familiar faces was so fun! i loved getting to see what the other dragons characters are up to
going to school tmrw with 2 hours of sleep bc this book kept me up 😪 The banter was so good y’all 😭😭😭 Colton was 💣🔥🧨💦👅 Reading about the next male love interest is going to feel like divorce 💔💔
But …. why the fuck was there so much smut … i don’t know if it’s my frontal lobe finally developing, but i can’t read smut every 2-3 chapters anymore 💔💔😪
Would’ve been 4 stars if there was a bit more talking and a little less sex 🥸
Everyone needs a Colton Wheeler. He’s such an asshole but he’s soooo good to Brynn. I read this book in one day it was so good! The banter is 10/10 the spice starts at 36% in and it’s hockey! This whole series is 10/10! Definitely one of my top reads this year.
i think i’ve just outgrown it! smut was good but that’s all it was tbh (in terms of their relationship). colton was just insufferable for me unfortunately since we didn’t as much closure or backstory with him and communicating it with brynn. 2 years ago tho and i prob would’ve eaten it up
Dnfed this at 80 percent. It was genuinely shit man, the smut was weird and the banter even weirder. But the weirdest of all was the relationship between chandler and those 3 other guys I'm literally so confused. Everything felt so forced, nothing makes sense, this was just braintrot. 2 is generous here but welp. So many reviews were like "if you want ENEMIES TO LOVERS " my brother in christ you have prolly don't even understand that genre. This was NOT enemies to lovers, it was just shit.
I flew through this book in a manner of hours. It was such an easy read with compelling characters, and holy mother the spice was spicing right. The mouth on Colton could win some awards.
Colton is (begrudgingly) traded to the Dragons, and he’s had a thing for his new captain’s sister, Brynn, for a while. She has rejected him countless times and claims to hate him… until she gives into the mutual attraction. And once that happens, is not long before the two are developing more feelings than either was looking for.
I really enjoyed seeing the bond Colton and Brynn formed over a shared loss. It brought deeper emotions into an otherwise lighter story. I also loved seeing Colton transform from an antagonistic jerk into someone who falls so hard for his girl. And the enemies to lovers banter was so, so good. Brynn’s sarcasm game was on point!
