Love's tangled threads weave a story of commitment and unspoken desire

In the tumultuous year of 1987, amid the echoes of Margaret Thatcher’s third term, 26-year-old Toby stands nervously at the altar, ready to marry his beloved bride.

As the cameras click and the congregation holds its breath, hidden emotions swirl in the air––longing glances from secret admirers and sceptical murmurs from family.
What should be a joyful day takes an unexpected turn ending in tears for the bride.

Among the guests are a German thalidomide survivor and her adoptive mother whose story is told through her diary, a haunting narrative that spans from the shadows of the Nazi era to the hopeful dawn following the fall of the Berlin Wall. It’s a story that Jasper is eager to explore.

As Toby embarks on his honeymoon, he quickly discovers his new life comes with unforeseen challenges. With his wife expecting their first child, alarming news about another thalidomide survivor stirs fear and alarm and questions are raised. As they navigate the complexities of their new lives, Toby and his wife find themselves becoming impassioned advocates for disability rights.

Family dynamics shift with Bill falling for Patsy, forcing everyone to confront the secret they’ve kept for so long.

‘Every Couple’s Fear’, the sixth book in the series, intricately navigates the complexities of love, disability and parenthood. Will the trials ahead bring them closer, or will hidden truths tear their newfound happiness apart? Join Toby on this poignant journey of resilience, hope and love as he learns that the ties that bind us can also challenge the very foundations of relationships.

Having read all the books in this series so far I wanted to write a quick review. Following Toby’s life from start to now as he becomes a parent himself, I have been amazed at how he meets each challenge full on and finds a way to overcome it.

There have been various side issues highlighted throughout the series from a journalist’s point of view that seem to disrupt the main story a bit, eg the US election in the previous book and the UK election in this one, but I get that it’s part of the journalist’s job to set the scene and raise the causes.

The contempt by able-bodied people shown to those with disabilities is embarrassing, but yet, would we react any differently? Shame on us. Education and inclusion can help, as the book shows, it’s the world that creates the disabilities for the person, by treating them differently instead of enabling them.

I loved the fact that Toby and Sue were able to get married and have a child together. I feel the hurt of abandonment that Sue had to endure throughout her life from her parents. I enjoyed the natural bond in Toby’s family members finally feeling right.

Looking forward to the next one in the series due Spring 2026.

Just love these set of books showing the lives of the Thalidamide children whose mother was advised to take the drug for morning sickness in pregnancy and the families who lived with a child and a reporter who fought for them to be compensated as it was never tested correctly
It also follows the live of a baby boy who if wasn’t for a nurse would like hundreds of babies left on a cold slab or windowsill to die due to their deformed bodies

A Thought-Provoking Story
This is a well-written story about the struggles, heartaches, and happiness a newly married thalidomide couple faces as they strive for independence. The author has also expertly woven in the problems endured by another thalidomide survivor along with the discrimination encountered by people with disabilities.
“Every Couple’s Fear” is a very informative, good read.
