First Response to Love

Rate this book
Vulcan Montgomery is the fire captain of Station 112 in New York City. His days are a whirlwind of heartpounding rescues and never-ending paperwork. The responsibility that comes with his role presses heavily on his shoulders, leaving little room for the gentle whisper of romance in his life.

Karina Reyes is an emergency medicine doctor who dedicates her life to mending broken bodies and soothing the nerves of uneasy patients. Although she has a nurturing nature, she carries invisible scars from the past etched deep within her soul. Scars that make her question her own worthiness of love and happiness.

But then, fate intervenes, bringing them together in a surprising twist. As Vulcan and Karina explore this new and unfamiliar journey, the boundaries between obligation and desire begin to blur.

Jessica Powell writes steamy contemporary romances where magnetic alpha heroes collide with quick-witted heroines in stories brimming with humor, heat, and emotional truths. She believes in love stories where the bedroom steam fogs up your glasses and the emotional growth makes you ugly-cry into your wine. Whether penning billionaires brought to their knees by free-spirited creatives or reformed playboys disarmed by single moms, Jessica crafts diverse, character-driven escapes where happily-ever-afters demand humility as much as desire.

When not reading or writing, she spends her free time traveling, rewatching Wiseman Grandchild (yes, again), binge-watching Chinese short dramas, or spending way too much time playing Sims 4.

✦✧✦ Plot ✦✧✦

Vulcan is the captain at a fire station, and Karina is an emergency doctor. Both of them are pretty much married to their jobs. They meet in a bar and immediately hit it off, but everyday life gets in the way of them meeting again, despite their attraction to each other. Then, it turns out that Vulcan’s father left him a considerable amount of money. The catch? He needs to marry before his 40th birthday in just 2 months and stay married for 3 years.

✼✼✼ Thoughts on what I liked ✼✼✼

~ I loved how real their relationship felt, like something you could experience in real life. We get a time jump of about a year towards the end of the book, at the point of the alleged HEA. Many books end there and I loved that we got to see how their bond evolved and the struggles they encountered.

~ Their communication was great for the most part, with a few exceptions. If you know me, you might know that miscommunication is easily one of my top 5 hated tropes. In this case, though, I’m willing to let it slide...nobody’s perfect and the reasons for the delays in communication were mostly understandable.

✼✼✼ More Thoughts/ what didn't work for me ✼✼✼

~ Their connection felt borderline instalove in many aspects, and I think the story would've benefited from more scenes in the early stages.

~ Karina’s background is meant to be painful, especially her relationship with her mother, but I found it hard to believe how one-dimensionally evil her mother was portrayed. Yes, towards the end, things get cleared up and we understand her motivations, but I still would’ve preferred more depth to her character.

~ Why would a trained firefighter in a leadership position even enter a burning building without wearing a respiratory protective mask? Isn’t that a basic rule, to never endanger yourself during a rescue, to avoid causing additional casualties? Make it make sense.

OMG Jessica! I’ll take a Vulcan wrapped in a big red bow for Christmas! I’m glad Vulcan’s and Karina’s paths crossed. They both unknowingly needed each other even if it was what started out as a contract. I love their story and the people around them really makes you want to melt….and not because he fights fires.

I am not even joking when I say that this is easily one of my top books of 2025, but will also now be one of the very few books that earns a spot in my all time favorites. Words cannot express how in love with this book I am. I seriously would rate it 6 stars if I could!!! Where do I even start…. I have never and I mean never annotated a book this much in my life. There is so much depth to this book beyond the romance aspect. Also, thank god for the no 3rd act breakup!

Before I talk about the shining stars of this book let me just say that I freaking LOVE Cassie and Valkyrie!! Their commentary in this book had me laughing out loud so much. It’s so hard not to give any spoilers, but this book is so captivating from start to finish. I usually struggle with progressing in the book at the beginning, but right from the beginning this book had such an easy flow to it that I didn’t want to put the book down.

Vulcan… mm mm mmm. Let me just say, may this kind of love find me. Even though he falls quick and fast for Karina he still takes his time. I love how much he respects/worships Karina and would literally give anything in the world for her. Don’t we all need a man like that!

Karina is so headstrong and badass I love it! When she got into a fight with Vulcan I was like, thank god this girl stood her ground. I’m so disappointed in books when the FMC just caves so easily for the MMC cause their head over heels for each other. I appreciated her willingness to listen and also grow as a person!

One of my favorite quotes from the book: “Your real family isn’t defined by blood, Karina. It’s defined by love. You’re my family, and I’m yours. Always.”

Thank you Love Notes PR for selecting me to read an ARC copy of this book and thank you Jessica Powell!!! I can wait to read what you write next!! Your book will forever have a special place in my heart!!! ❤️❤️❤️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An Emotional, Heart-Pounding Love Story That Stays With You

First Response to Love is a breathtaking blend of passion, courage, and vulnerability that captures the very essence of what it means to heal — both physically and emotionally. Vulcan Montgomery, the steadfast fire captain of Station 112, is a hero whose strength lies not just in his bravery on the front lines, but in his quiet struggle to balance duty and desire. Karina Reyes, a dedicated emergency doctor, is equally compelling — her compassion for others shines even as she battles the shadows of her own past.

When their worlds collide, sparks fly in more ways than one. The chemistry between Vulcan and Karina feels raw, authentic, and deeply earned. Their connection unfolds with the perfect mix of slow-burn tension and emotional depth, making every moment between them feel both tender and electric.

This book beautifully intertwines themes of love, resilience, and redemption. The author’s vivid storytelling makes you feel the pulse of the city, the rush of an emergency call, and the quiet intimacy of two hearts learning to trust again.

First Response to Love is more than a romance — it’s a story about finding light after darkness, and courage in the most unexpected places. A must-read for anyone who loves heartfelt, character-driven stories with real emotional fire.

Umm I don't know how begin with about this book. It'll make you giggle, swoon, blush, cry, and all sorts of other things because this book really has it all for a romance book.
I cannot stop thinking about how Vulcan pays attention to details!! He knows if Karina has a good or bad day at work by looking at what drink she grabs when she gets home. He cooks for her and he's good at giving her words of affirmations. In and outside of bed. He'd do anything for her so she can live comfortably.

Karina is such a sweetheart. I love seeing her go from doubting herself due to her mother's selfishness to realizing how does it feel to have someone that actually cares and loves her. She never knows how does it feel to have someone to stand up for her until she meets Vulcan. She slowly learns how to accept love from someone that actually loves her.

I want to believe that this book is written for every eldest daughter who grows up being the spine of the family but at the same time all the efforts wasn't appreciated. This book is a warm hug for you, for daughters who don't have anyone to rely on and scared to open up 🫶🏼

aww Karina & Vulcan were the sweetest couple to read! I enjoyed the communication between them which is what I like when it comes to romance reads.

Vulcan is down BAD for her🤭😮‍💨 we love a man obsessed with his woman.

Karina is so kind and loving towards others and she was an awesome FMC :)

omggg this was the first contemporary book I’ve read in a while and it did not disappoint. I could not put this book down. As a first responder myself, it was really cool to read about the ER and such since I have experience being there as an EMT.

I also think that Karina and Vulcan’s relationship is so cute. I love the way it developed and the way they speak to each other is so endearing. The only reason why I took off a star is because they have a problem communicating at one point and I don’t rly like the miscommunication trope. But the way they resolve it was so good and they grew together which I loved.

I totally forgot how much I love reading a good contemporary book and I’m glad this was the reentry into it.

I want to thank Jessica Powell and love notes PR for the opportunity to read this ARC!

Happy release day to First Response to Love! 🎉

This story follows Vulcan Montgomery, the fire captain who’s equal parts protective, passionate, and just the right amount of stubborn, and Dr. Karina Reyes, an emergency room doctor who’s dedicated her life to saving others while quietly struggling with her own scars. When these two collide, sparks fly (and not just from the fires Vulcan fights).

I loved the way Jessica balanced intensity with emotion in this one. The chemistry between Vulcan and Karina is undeniable, steamy but also layered with vulnerability and heart. Both characters are carrying their own weight from the past, and watching them slowly let their guards down and find comfort in one another felt so raw and genuine.

The medical and fire station settings added so much realism and tension to the story. You can really feel the adrenaline of their world, but also the tenderness when the chaos quiets down. It’s that perfect mix of high stakes and heartfelt romance that keeps you turning the pages.

If you read this book you know exactly where this song is from 🫣👀

If you’re a fan of emotional, slightly angsty, and very steamy contemporary romances with protective heroes and resilient heroines, this one will be right up your alley.

🔥 Tropes: Firefighter x Doctor, workplace proximity, wounded heroine, protective hero, found strength, emotional healing

This book had me hooked from the start — it’s emotional, tender, and full of heart. Vulcan and Karina’s story isn’t just about love; it’s about healing, trust, and finding warmth even after the darkest storms. Jessica Powell did an incredible job showing two strong yet broken souls learning how to love again.

If you’re a fan of slow-burn romance with deep emotional connections and mature characters, this book is a must-read!

Thank you again to Jessica Powell for this ARC — I’m so grateful for the chance to experience this heartfelt story before release! 💕

ARC Review:
Thank you, Lovenotes PR and Jessica Powell, for the opportunity to receive an advanced reader copy of First Response to Love. I read the first half of this book so fast over my fall break, I didn’t realize how fast I was reading it. I really enjoyed how realistic this book was throughout. The characters were well developed with their own problems both in and outside of the marriage that created difficulties, but they always found a way to work it out. Overall, this was a super fun and quick read. I highly recommend it!

I’m loving this gem 10000/10 stars!

What to expect inside this baby 😉

❤️‍🔥 Slow Burn
🕰️ Age Gap
💍 Marriage of Convenience
👨‍🚒 Fire Fighter Man x Er Doctor 🩺

To begin with I would like to thank my most favorite PR company for choosing me to read this book. Ever since I signed up for it I had doubts that I wouldn’t get it and here I am today writing a review. To start with author Jessica Powell wrote this book whole heartedly, I love that she planned it slow burn love but way that you enjoy the story of Karina & Vulcan.

She build up the personality of Karina that got me love her, she is brave and strong women despite her financial difficulties she faces with her cruel mother but on other hand Karina is amazing wonderful women. I love how straightforward she is when it comes to communication with her man 🤭.

Vulcan, my boy were should I start??? He is amazing hard working fire fighter captain just like the way Karina is when it comes to her patients in ER. His amazing and kind man, it’s beautiful to see he got loving family by his side the spice from him I’m keeping it to myself as you deserve to add this beautiful book on your list to find out.

If you love my reviews, follow & stay tuned for upcoming book releases and Arc review from my one and only Favorite PR company 🤍.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this. I do enjoy a marriage of convenience and I also love a man in uniform so I had a feeling I’d enjoy Vulcan.

I was very surprised though at Vulcan’s character. When I first started reading I thought he was going to be a quiet, reserved guy but actually when he meets Karina it’s like he does a 360. He becomes a flirty, sexy man who has no issues being blunt and saying exactly what he wants.

Karina however is the quiet, reserved one that believes she doesn’t deserve him. They are two completely different people from different backgrounds but actually they complement each other so much and the fact they both have important, busy none stop jobs has them appreciating each other more.

I loved reading their story, how they first met to marrying to help Vulcan access his inheritance to blurring lines and falling in love. There is a lot of emotions running through this story and there was times I wanted to cry alongside the FMC but it was so moving and such a beautiful ending too.

Antecdotal notes while reading
I love this dedication page. "For everyone still searching, May you stumble upon love in the most unexpected way or places and recognize it when it finds you."
Open door romance
Vulcan, MMC, dang that name. His name sounds like he doesn't take anyone's crap, is very secure in himself, and has a quiet strength...or he could be a total jerk. NYC Fire Fighter Captain
Multi-generational firefighter family
Harry is a good wingman. He's funny, persistent, and has some good one-liners.
Karina, FMC, ER trauma doctor, trusting others to continue the care she began is hard. Can you trust others and their judgment as much as yourself?
Cassie, wing woman extraordinaire, a bestie with a heart
I think I'm with Harry on this one. Text her. Text her. Text her.
Ask and Answer Questions...Is the budget shortfall going to put Vulcan in Karina's care?
Oh, Karina, your mom is a piece of work!
Finding out about an inheritance 5 years later, that's a new plot twist.
Vulcan, I love the jumps you make to protect Karina from evil doers.
Karina, I have to agree with you on the Butter Pecan ice cream. 😆
"... family isn't just blood, it's the people who choose to love and support you unconditionally. " Karina, you are worthy of this!!
Now I have another reason to finally watch Grey's Anatomy, which has been in my queue forever.
Prediction- Harry and Cassie together in the next novel or maybe this one???
Good for you Val, but is it the Olympic swimmer?

If Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 met in a novel.

An age gap, marriage of convenience romance between a fire captain and an emergency room doctor.

Full of drama, family issues and miscommunication. It had a sneaky twist thrown in too, that I really didn’t see coming.

It’s well worth a read if you’re looking for a first responders romance with lots of drama. I really enjoy the marriage of convenience trope, so this was fun. The age gap was nicely done too, sometimes age gaps can come off a little creepy but this thankfully didn’t.

Unfortunately I wasn’t keen on the pacing of this story, it felt a little uneven throughout.
I didn’t feel connected to the characters either. That may have been because I really wasn’t a fan of the names Vulcan and Valkyrie but Vulcan just didn’t come across well to me. A lot of his actions just made him seem like a bit of a tw@t.

First Response to Love by Jessica Powell was my first read from this author, and I was pleasantly surprised. The age gap romance was handled really well, and I especially enjoyed the marriage of convenience trope.

I appreciated that both main characters were successful and independent in their careers: Karina is a doctor, and Vulcan is a firefighter. Their first meeting at a bar had that instant spark, and it was nice to see their connection deepen naturally over time.

The marriage twist took me by surprise in the best way it added an unexpected layer to the story. I also really loved the “found family” aspect surrounding Karina; it added warmth and depth to the plot.

Overall, this was a unique and engaging read. I'm definitely interested in checking out more from Jessica Powell!

I received this story as an ARC.

I enjoyed First Response to Love. It started out very strong,I liked the intro chapters to both the MMC and FMC. I think the storyline has good bones, the structure of the story, even the plot twists, was there, but it did feel very rushed at times.

While the rushed paced made the story feel disjointed and bumpy in places, there were several parts that felt smooth and cohesive.

Overall, I enjoyed the story, felt I had a good connection to the main characters and secondary characters, and found myself wanting to know how the story ended.

Vulcan is a fire captain who pushing 40yo has given up on settling down; until he meets Karina, a respected ER Doctor.
After a fun night getting to know each other, Vulcan ghosts Karina. Until he's given an offer he can't refuse.
What was a contractual marriage agreement, quickly becomes something more.

I had such high hopes for this one; it was very Greys Anatomy/ Chicago Fire vibes. It had a lot of potential but I feel in parts that things were rushed and other parts things were too vague and didn't really make sense.

I usually love marriage of convenience, but found this one was pretty insta-love and not enough banter or tension. Also the MMC had her number and didn’t call her for days because he was too busy at work but as soon as he needed something, he selfishly reached out to her!

This debut novel by Jessica Powell is everything I crave in a future partner. The way Vulcan, the MMC, cares for, protects, and loves his family is absolutely to die for. Karina has to overcome so much from her life, and Vulcan was the perfect person to meet her where she was and help her heal. I was instantly hooked by chapter two—it felt straight out of Grey’s Anatomy with Karina as the brilliant ER doctor. And nothing is hotter than the passion we get from fire captain Vulcan. Oh, and the spice? 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Chef’s kiss!!

I’m so grateful to have been an ARC reader and can’t wait to see what’s next for this series and author!

The MMC is Vulcan James Montgomery: Vulcan Montgomery is a Fire Captain can is also kinda a silver fox. He doesn't have time to date anyone because of his busy schedule as a fire captain. He has a sister-which they both have a high-pressure job that makes them workaholics-but they don't talk nor see each other much. He has a friend whose name is Harry, and he looks out for him. Harry wants to set Vulcan on a date, but Vulcan doesn't want to, and he finds ways not to go on any dates because his work is everything. Vulcan Montgomery is the son of Thomas Montgomery-who was also a fire captain. Vulcan looks at Katrina's way, and both of them are just looking at each other without saying or talking to each other. Vulcan's dad and grandpa were firefighters, but if Vulcan wasn't a firefighter nor firefighter captain, then he would be a chef because he likes to cook. So Vulcan's dad died before he became a firefighter, but Vulcan thinks that Thomas would have agreed to him becoming a firefighter just like his dad. Vulcan is 39. Vulcan's lieutenant is Mike, and Mike's wife is Amaya, who's a journalist. It's been 2 weeks since he asked Katrina for her number, but he still hasn't texted nor called her. Vulcan says that he's busy, but at the same time, it's like he stalls for time. It is 5 years since his dad died. Vulcan didn't get anything, but now he has 2 months to find a bride and claim an inheritance of 50 million dollars that his dad had left for him. Vulcan went to the Heroes Gala, but he didn't really like this type of event, but when he heard and saw Katrina, he was happy. They will go on a coffee date the next morning. He texted her before he went to the station, and she texted him back, saying she could meet him the next morning. MMC is Vulcan James Montgomery: Vulcan doesn't dare that he is 39 almost 40. Vulcan learns about Katrina's financial issues, and he knows about the money she sends to her mother. He also learns that Katrina asked for $300 000 instead of $1 000 000. He told his little sister about Katrina and that she'll be moving in. He really likes her and that he can picture them together together. He also told his little sister that she could officially meet her and that he wanted to tell their mother about Katrina. Vulcan said that as her husband and protector that she shouldn't have to burden everything all on her own, but she has him now.

The FMC is Katrina Marie Reyes: She is the oldest daughter who is an emergency medicine doctor in the ER. Her mother has shown her love for 8 years before her twin brothers were born. She was close to her parents until she wasn't. Katrina has a best friend-Cassie, who is a nurse. Katrina doesn't want to talk about her mother because her mother only wants money. Katrina's best friend knows about the money and every time her mother calls. Katrina is checking out the fire captain-aka Vulcan Montgomery, who's kinda a silver fox who's been single for a while now. Katrina's dad died in a fatal car accident when she was 16. Katrina is 27. Katrina doesn't like events like the Heroes Gala, but she did end up going to the Gala. She talked to Vulcan, and he told her why he hasn't texted her yet, and she understands that work comes 1st. But she is tired of waiting for someone to talk to her and not be in a relationship with her. Her mother called her again and she told Cassie everything. Katrina did what she could, and she does what she can now for herself and not her family. Katrina doesn't care that she is 28. When Katrina talked to Cassie, she told her that she and Vulcan were together and that they'll live together and that they'll get married. When it was time for Katrina to move, her mother showed up, and she went on with the guilt trip and everything. But when Vulcan showed up, he got to meet her mother, and he saw 1st hand what her mother does and says, but he took charge of everything, and he put her mother in her place. When Vulcan said husband and protector, she kinda liked that he said it, but at the same time, it terrifies her.

Thank you to the author and publisher for providing me with an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.

'First Response to Love' is a first responder, age gap romance, marriage of convenience novel that centres on Karina, an emergency medicine doctor who is dedicated to her job and her selfish mother, and Vulcan, a firehouse captain who is also dedicated to his work like no other. When the two meet at a bar one night after work, they feel an instant connection but Vulcan is reluctant to follow through on pursuing a relationship with Karina as he is worried that he will not be able to prioritise her over his job.
Karina is dealing with paying off student loans while working 15hr shifts in the ER and supporting her selfish mother who is constantly demanding money from her at a rate that she cant always meet. So when an opportunity arises to go on a date with a man in exchange for a fair chunk of money, she sees it as an opportunity to finally settle her debt and get her mother off her back.
Lo and behold, the secret date is Vulcan, who has been given an ultimatum by his late father to marry a woman by his 40th birthday in order to inherit a large amount of money, he knows exactly who he will pick when he sees a familiar face on his lawyer's pre-approved list of candidates.

What initially drew me to the novel was the idea of it being a 'first responder' novel, as a medical doctor myself and a huge fan of '911' I was so excited to see a character I could relate to in a romance novel. While I did find the story interesting to begin with, I soon felt a bit let down by the weak chemistry between the main characters and the deception that occurs between Karina and Vulcan that leads to unnecessary drama between them later on. I feel that the novel didn't really focus on the careers of the two main characters, which was a little disappointing, as I had hoped that that element would help differentiate it from your average contemporary romance.
There were also a few technical errors in the writing of the book, and I did struggle with the pacing of the novel.
I think many people would really enjoy this book, but perhaps my high exceptions were a detriment to the reading experience.

✨🔥 BOOK REVIEW: First Response to Love 🔥✨
⭐️ My Rating: 5/5 ⭐️

Some books hit you softly… and some hit you right in the chest and refuse to leave. First Response to Love did both for me. ❤️‍🩹🔥 As someone who has lived through heartbreak, healing, and rebuilding piece by piece, this story felt personal in a way that made me pause, breathe, and reread lines more than once.

Vulcan Montgomery — fire captain of Station 112 — isn’t just “book boyfriend” material. He’s strength, vulnerability, and quiet heartbreak wrapped in one. 💛🔥 And Karina Reyes? A doctor with the softest heart and the heaviest shadows. The way she keeps showing up for others even when she’s hurting… it reminded me of so many strong women I know (myself included 🥺💛).

Their chemistry? Whew. Slow-burn, raw, tender, electric. 🔥✨ Every glance, every hesitation, every moment where trust starts to grow — I felt all of it. As a mom, a grad student, and someone juggling life one day at a time, I connected so deeply with the reminder that healing isn’t linear and love doesn’t wait for life to calm down. Sometimes it shows up right in the middle of the chaos. 💕🌧️➡️☀️

The writing is vivid, emotional, and immersive. You feel the adrenaline of every emergency call 🚑🔥 and the softness of every late-night heart-to-heart. It’s the kind of romance that whispers:
You can be brave again. You can trust again. You can open your heart again.

💛 First Response to Love isn’t just a romance — it’s a story about redemption, second chances, courage, and choosing love after the darkest seasons. A definite new favorite.

🔥🚑❤️‍🔥 Add this to your TBR ASAP.

First Response to Love by Jessica Powell felt like stepping into a slow-burning fire; one that warmed me from the inside out. Experiencing Vulcan and Karina’s story through their eyes made every moment feel intimate and raw. There was so much tension, tenderness, and quiet acts of devotion… it all unfolded so naturally that I found myself unable to put it down!

Told in dual POV, this story follows Vulcan Montgomery, a stoic fire captain in NYC, and Karina Reyes, a compassionate ER doctor with a past that quietly haunts her. Their lives collide in a marriage of convenience, but what starts as a practical arrangement quickly turns into something deeply emotional and soul-stirring

I was hooked by Vulcan’s quiet strength and Karina’s vulnerability. Jessica Powell writes with such emotional depth that I felt every moment every hesitation, every spark, every heartbreak. Vulcan isn’t your typical alpha hero; he’s protective but patient, and watching him fall hard for Karina was pure magic. And, Karina’s journey of healing and learning to accept love had me rooting for her every step of the way.

The chemistry between them is slow burn perfection. Their connection builds through shared moments, late-night conversations, and the kind of intimacy that feels earned. I especially loved how their professions, firefighter and ER doctor, weren’t just background noise. The high-stakes world they live in added tension and urgency, but also highlighted their resilience and dedication.

My favorite moment, without spoiling too much, there’s a scene where Vulcan shows up for Karina in a way that’s so quietly powerful, I had to pause and just breathe. It’s not just grand gestures, it’s the small, consistent acts of love that make this story shine.

With themes of trust, second chances, and the power of showing up for someone, this book is perfect for readers who crave character-driven romance with a pulse of real-life intensity. I laughed, I cried, I swooned. And now I’m counting the days until the next book in the series. Jessica Powell, you’ve got a new fan.

I absolutely loved this book.
It is the sweetest love story and was so entertaining with all of the drama and the characters involved.

Vulcan and Karina‘s story is one that I thoroughly enjoyed and found it so entertaining and so loving. I absolutely hated Karina‘s mother and I really didn’t see the ending that happened with their relationship, but it also explains why her mother was so cruel and financially and emotionally abused Karina. She 100% still didn’t deserve how she was treated by her though.

Was I mad that Vulcan took things into his own hands when it came to Karinas mum, No. I was a mad that he didn’t communicate with Karina properly about what he was willing to do for her. I think that he was doing his best to protect her and try to take that awkward conversation that she would’ve had to have had with her mother away from her, but at the end of the day it would’ve been her choice to do that not his. So when she finds out about what he did, her reaction was totally understandable.

I love that both of their jobs were in first response careers, that they both save lives and that meant they would’ve had an understanding of each other’s work schedules and the passion that they both have for their jobs. I think this helped their relationship as they both understood what it takes to be in a position that they were both in.

I love that there was a bit of quirky banter between the two of them and I think that showed more about the age gap between Vulcan and Karina. But also Vulcan was just as quick with his responses and always knew the right things to say!

I wish the book was a little bit longer and that’s why it got four stars. Every part of this book I really really enjoyed and I am so grateful that I got a chance to read this as an advanced early copy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A heartfelt, gripping, slow-burn romance that stays with you long after the last page.

First Response to Love is one of those rare romances that balances high-stakes emotion with deeply human character growth. Jessica Powell delivers a powerful story about two people who heal others for a living—but must first learn how to heal themselves.

Vulcan Montgomery, the fire captain of Station 112, is instantly compelling. The weight of responsibility he carries is palpable, and Powell captures beautifully how duty can quietly erode a person’s capacity for vulnerability. Watching Vulcan struggle between the life-or-death intensity of firefighting and the quiet, unfamiliar territory of love makes his journey incredibly rewarding.

Karina Reyes, an emergency medicine doctor, is equally unforgettable. She’s capable and compassionate, but the emotional scars she hides add a level of depth that makes her feel strikingly real. Her internal battles—her doubts about worthiness, happiness, and trust—hit straight at the heart.

What truly elevates this book is the chemistry between Vulcan and Karina. Their connection doesn’t spark in an instant; it builds like a slow ignition—tender, cautious, and ultimately blazing. Powell writes their dynamic with nuance: love not as a lightning strike, but as a choice, a risk, and a gradual shedding of armor.

The blend of adrenaline-filled emergencies and quiet, intimate character moments keeps the story moving with perfect rhythm. And when fate finally pulls these two wounded souls together, the payoff is both emotional and beautifully earned.

Romance readers who love protective heroes, resilient heroines, and stories that explore the boundary between duty and desire will absolutely devour this book. It’s heartfelt, hopeful, and utterly captivating.

I came across this book on TikTok, and when I found out it was a debut I was skeptical, but WOW it did not disappoint!!!!! (I dont leave reviews but this book made me feel emotions)

CAN WE TALK ABOUT VULCAN MONTGOMERY?!?!!?

MY MAN MY MAN MY MAN!!! The way he cared for Karina even before they said I do had me feral. HE IS THE KING OF AFFIRMATIONS! Was I a fan of him not telling Karina about the money with her mother? No. But I do understand why he didn't. She would have told him she can handle it on her own because HELLO, she has been handling everything on her own for years. So it was refreshing to even read that after she found out they talked through it instead of breaking up (SO HAPPY THIS DIDN'T HAVE A 3RD ACT BREAKUP)

This book offered a very realistic portrayal of people in relationships. People with too much pride to ask for help. People who are so in love that they will do what it takes to make sure the other person is loved and protected. I LOVED IT! The age gap was well written in this book and I almost forgot there was an age gap until Karina brought it up lol.

KARINA!!!!!!! COME TO THE FRONT!!! I LOVE YOU! YOU ARE SO STRONG, BEAUTIFUL, AND COMPASSIONATE, AND YOUR "MOTHER" CAN GO TO HELL!!!! As an eldest daughter, I could relate to Karina's burden of bending over backwards to make her mother happy and always feeling like she HAD to help because it's her mother.

I enjoyed reading about their day-to-day life at work, but I'm glad it wasn't the MAIN focus of the book. This was refreshing to read.

I'm new to this author and I can not wait to read more of her work!

First Response To Lover by Jessica Powell

Tropes
❤‍🔥 Slow Burn
🕰 Age Gap
💍 Marriage of Convenience
🧯Firefighter vs Doctor

This book follows Vulcan Montgomery a fire captain in New York City. He is devoted to his work, with all the budget cuts, personal cuts and a legacy to uphold , he has no time for a personal life. Karina Reyes is an emergency medicine doctor and she is dedicated to saving people. But fate has other ideas for them , throwing their lives together with twists and all.

This was an easy read that had me gasping, giggling and kicking my feel. I love the writing style and I fell in love with the story from the beginning. This is the forced proximity, one bed trope we need!!

Vul the hunky firefighter. The man that will protect his wife at all cost and will do anything to make her happy. The way he stands up for Karina is book husband worthy. Karina's life is made difficult by her mother. She tries everything for her not to get to her, to feel unworthy and not loved. Vul makes her feel the opposite and he reminds her frequently of this in very steamy ways.

Valkyrie, Vul's sister, is such an amazing person. She accepts Karina into the family without a second thought. I love the found family aspect as well as all the steamy scenes and there is quite a few. If you enjoy a forced proximity romance with no third act break up and a book that is just fun to read. This book is for you.

Thank you @lovenotes.pr and Jessica Powell for sending me this book in exchange for my honest review.
