I had been eagerly anticipating this book, even before the new covers were released, and I can confidently say it was everything I had hoped for! It had been a while since I delved into the paranormal genre, and what an AMAZING READ this turned out to be. The writing style is highly accessible, and the shorter chapters maintain momentum, making it difficult to put down.
The story follows Kylie Galen, a teenager whose recent behavior leads her parents to send her to Shadow Falls, a summer camp for troubled kids. But what Kylie quickly learns is that Shadow Falls isn’t just your typical camp; it’s a sanctuary for supernatural beings—something Kylie was blissfully unaware of until her arrival.
Throughout the book, we accompany her on a journey of self-discovery, as she grapples with the revelation that she is, in fact, a supernatural anomaly. What struck me most about this novel is how it handles its YA roots without feeling childish. The tone is refreshingly mature, reminiscent of shows like Riverdale, as it compellingly tackles teenage struggles.
Kylie is a protagonist I can get behind—her choices felt authentic, and she didn’t irritate me, which is often a concern in YA literature. The love triangle in the story is another highlight; I still can’t choose a favorite! It’s rare to find a love triangle done so well, where I genuinely wouldn’t mind who she ended up with. I’m excited to see how this plays out in future installments.
The group of friends Kylie forms at camp feels genuine and relatable, avoiding the forced dynamics that can plague many YA narratives. Plus, the diverse cast of supernatural beings—werewolves, witches, vampires, demons, and more—adds depth and intrigue to the story. I love the mystery surrounding Kylie's identity; it keeps you on your toes and engaged.
The atmosphere of the book is just right—creepy yet not terrifying, providing a unique blend of realism with supernatural elements. It portrays a world where the supernatural exists seamlessly within our reality.
