Wayward Hollow #1

A Love Like Pumpkin Spice

Rate this book
Welcome to Wayward Hollow - Where strangers become family and love finds a way.

After catching my fiancé tangled up with my sister (yes, my sister), and being told by my parents I was “overreacting,” I packed my best friend and what was left of my dignity to flee to Wayward Hollow - a picturesque little town that looks like it was plucked straight out of a Hallmark movie.

I try to put myself back together. People-pleasing? Officially retired. Love? Off the table.
At least that was the plan.

But Chaos unfolds when my attempt to save a stray cat leads me to Henry. The town’s beloved veterinarian is gentle, ridiculously attractive, and seems to have a sixth sense for broken things...including me.
Just when I start to believe in new beginnings, the past comes knocking—loud, uninvited, and far from finished.A Love Like Pumpkin Spice is a comforting, feel-good read for anyone who loves headstrong fmc's, sassy best friends, emotional healing, and small-town chaos with a whole lot of heart, and just a sprinkle of drama and the paranormal.

The Synopsis

After finding out her fiancé cheated on her, Nic decides it’s time for a new beginning. With her best friend she moves from her busy LA actress life into the epitome of a small town in fall, Wayward Hollow, to “romanticize the shit out of life.” If you’re like me and immediately thought of Gilmore Girls, you aren’t that far off.

What I enjoyed

The story is full of pop culture references, which I always enjoy because I feel especially smart whenever I catch one. It’s very clear Wayward Hollow and its residents are modeled with Gilmore Girls in mind.
The coziness, the everyone knows and helps each other vibe, and even Lorelai and Rory’s coffee addiction are all there. We get a cute coffee shop with a grumpy owner (yes, in a cap), a town gazebo across the street, and even a touch of Supernatural, both in the form of Jensen Ackles and a ghostly cat.

The male main character, Henry, is the local vet and honestly just a sweetheart. He’s calm, attentive, and reassuring throughout. He’s also big on forehead kisses and I am fully sold on that alone. Bonus points for skipping the giant miscommunication trope or the unnecessary third act breakup.

The found family theme is especially strong, with plenty of characters Nic meets along the way. Friendships are given real focus, pets included, and the supporting cast shows depth that made them a joy to read.

Now for what didn’t fully convince me.

Her family, who basically serve as the story’s antagonists, felt too flat. They seemed evil just for the hell of it, probably because it was convenient for the plot. They keep digging themselves deeper into being terrible people without much reason behind it. The whole plot is built around their hatred for Nic, but it seems rooted only in the fact that she dares to exist. I would have liked more nuance and characteristics to make them feel like actual people rather than cardboard villains with one purpose only. This issue hit hardest in the prologue, which felt way too cramped with info-dumping. The story flow would have benefited from stretching it across a few chapters or cutting it down and working some of those details in later as flashbacks.

As much as I enjoyed the Gilmore Girls vibe and the fact that the book doesn’t take itself too seriously, it leaned too hard on it for me. Caleb gave me such strong Luke vibes that he could have been named Duke and I wouldn’t have blinked. That shift from quirky and fun to unoriginal pulled me out a bit. And as much as it hurts me to say it, the ghost cat felt out of place. Not everything needs to be my taste of course, but it was mentioned often enough that I wondered why the book isn’t simply labeled as fantasy.

There were also a few grammar slips that disrupted the flow for me.

Who would I recommend this to?

If you want to romanticize the shit out of fall, add more Gilmore Girls energy to your life, or need pumpkin spice to show up in more than just your morning coffee, then this is your book.

And as much as I love holding hands, this? This wins.

☕️ Bookish Thoughts
Welcome to Wayward Hollow! The most adorable small town with the sweetest residents. A Love Like Pumpkin Spice is a cozy small town romance that radiates Hallmark movie charm. It was sooo cheesy and I loved every bit of it!

Right from the start, my heart broke for Nic. Her ex-fiancé and family absolutely suck and can kick rocks. Thankfully, she has her ride or die bestie Lauren, and the two of them decide to start over in Wayward Hollow. Cue the cat distribution system working overtime and gifting Nic not only cuddly strays but also Chaos, the ghost kitty 🥺

I adored Nic and Henry, the town’s cinnamon roll veterinarian. They were so sweet together with Henry being so perfect for Nic! Also, Henry naming his dog Jensen Ackles? Perfection. All Supernatural fans, hands up! 🙋🏽‍♀️

The ending was a little too cheesy, but honestly, it fit the tone of the book and didn’t take away from how much fun it was. Solid 4 star read!

🍂 What to Expect
• Cinnamon roll MMC
• Actress FMC
• Small town charm
• He falls first
• Friends to lovers
• Found family
• Cozy autumn vibes

This book was an easy, cozy read, but don’t expect much out of it.
I thought the conflict at the beginning would lead to more understandable drama, but the book fell flat for me. The writing was very YA and a bit cringey if I’m being honest. This book reminded me of Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls a little too much, plus the inclusion of the ghost cat was just weird. It didn’t fit the story at all and felt like the author wanted to be quirky, but it didn’t work.
Overall, if you’re looking for something low stakes for the fall season, you’ll like this book.

Thank you to Love Notes PR for the ARC of this book!

Hmm this book wasn’t very good in my opinion. The cover is so freaking cute and that’s why I picked it up. The writing was very immature and cheesy. The whole ghost cat situation was so strange to me, I don’t think it was necessary. The MMC is very mediocre and I didn’t see the chemistry between them.

Don't want to write a long review.

It was cute and low angst, and it has a touch of instant attraction, but the MCs took quite a while before acting on it. Love the found family and friendships these people built.

There's drama caused by the villains, and it was actually comical and totally unrealistic, but hey, that's just how fiction goes! Anyway, these dumbasses were more like people who needed to be institutionalized rather than being taken seriously.

Overall, the story was actually enjoyable, but the ending was meh. 🤧 I liked the MCs, and they have actual chemistry. I liked the slow-burn-ish pace and how they got to know each other first before doing anything more. I love the side characters (they're the future MCs of the upcoming books).

While the general feeling I have for this book was positive, it really dampens my mood when the story ends in a HFN situation. They were not even engaged! 🥴 And I'm going to assume that will happen in future installments. It's also annoying that I have to sign up for newsletters just to get some extra scenes. Why can't these just be included in the book?

Anyhoo, other than that, I really had fun with the story. But I can't give a rating of more than 3⭐ because the ending sucks.

Book info:
- Small town romance
- Strangers to lovers
- Instant attraction
- Former actress x Veterinarian
- Slowburn-ish
- Toxic/Dysfunctional family
- Found family/friendships
- Cute animals
- A bit of paranormal (matchmaking cat ghost)
- No cheating, OM/OW, separation
- No V (no info on their history)
- HFN (in a relationship 🙃)

Notes:
- OM. But not really; Nic's ex did cause a whole lot of problems in the book. This guy's freaking delusional and has some serious nerve. But she's not interested in him at all. I mean, what self-respecting woman would want to go back to a man who is cheating on her with her own sister?
- I really wish her family (bitch parents and bitch sister) got more awful comeuppance. They really had it easy, especially with all the betrayals and toxicity they brought into her life.

FMC - Nic: 4 🌟
MMC - Henry: 5 🌟
SPICE: 🌶🌶

LIKES: It's the middle of August, so I'm ready for all the fall vibes, and this romcom hit the spot 😊 To start off, I'm in love with the town and wish I could move there immediately. I became very attached to all the characters, townspeople included.

I admire Nic for putting her foot down and sticking up for herself, when I can't possibly imagine how difficult her family and relationship situation must be. Henry is a loveable and supportive golden retriever MMC, and I knew from their very first interactions that they were going to be a cute romcom couple.

With a kickass best friend, pumpkin spice coffee, a memorable fall festival, and a ghost cat, this was an adorable read!

DISLIKES: Nic can be a little high maintenance, though her insecurities are understandable. And the drama with her ex and her family was a little over the top at times, but it was still fun to read

Thank you to Love Notes PR for the opportunity to read this ARC 💕

HOW LUCK TO RECEIVE SUCH AN ARC 4.5🌟

Tropes:
•small town romance ✅
•emotional healing✅
•friends-to-lovers ✅
•slow burn✅
•fall aesthetic + a little of spice 🌶️

This book feels like autumn bottled into a love story.

The Story
After the ultimate betrayal (from her fiancé and her sister
💔), NIC runs away to Wayward Hollow to heal.
She swears off romance, but of course the universe (and a ghost cat??) has other plans.
Enter Henry, the town's cinnamon-roll vet who just radiates safe love. Their slow-burn romance had me kicking my feet, smiling at my Kindle, and whispering
"just kiss already."

The Characters:
NIC: messy, headstrong, emotionally damaged but so real. Watching her heal and reclaim herself was chef's kiss.

Henry: if you love a green flag MMC who knows how to take care of your heart, this man is IT. The definition of a comfort character.

✨Final Thoughts ✨
A total comfort read with swoony vibes. I already want to move to Wayward Hollow and let Henry fix my heart too.

Perfect for fans of The Pumpkin Spice Café🧡💛🤎

I loved this book so much! It was deep with emotion but also in a cozier fall romance type of way that kept the story fun and enjoyable even while dealing with those heavier issues. Omg and the love for animals represented was just perfect. I don’t know what else to say but that this book was wonderful!

I feel bitter giving this 2 stars but I really didn’t enjoy this one 😅 I fear autumnal romances with rich people give me the ick. The romance was insta love, the villains were absolutely insane in a completely unbelievable way, and the FMC was annoying. Best part was the towns cute lil vibes. I was still slightly tempted to read the next book because it seemed like a potential throuple but alas it is not so I think I will let this series go

5/5 Stars ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

3/5 Spice 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️

I had the pleasure of reading and reviewing “A Love Like Pumpkin Spice” by @haileyfrostauthor and I am OBSESSED.

So good. Literally, so good.

What’s not to love though?
-Hot SINGLE veterinarian who has a husky, Jensen Ackles (aaawoooo!)
-Former, retired actress who has a ghost cat haunting her and bringing her animals in need of a home
-Her actress best friend, who is more than a sister to her than her own true sister
-A grumpy coffee shop owner who has a love/hate relationship with everything – including smiling and pumpkin spice
-A quirky, new to town, content creator who made me laugh more than once
-ALL OF THE ANIMALS

We also have some folks in the book that we don’t like! They stink but well played, Hailey Frost, well played!
-The Ex. That dude is a HOT mess express
-The sister
-The parents

If you don’t have this on your wishlist, I 100% recommend it as an add. It’s a cute, small town romance with a twist of suspense and anxiety! I absolutely loved it and really hope there is a second book in this series!

A Love Like Pumkin Spice 🍂

Firstly,I want to thank LoveNotes PR & Hailey Frost for trusting me with this ARC!

Nic just arrived at Wayward Hollow,a small town that looks like it just got out of a Hallmark movie, after finding that her fiancee & sister have been secretly dating behind her back-ouch!
Here she will understand family and love more than ever while understanding that past might be harder to get rid of than she thought it be.

Starting, this was my BIGGEST heartbreak of the year.
Did I expect to cry for 60% of the book? NO.
Girl,you K I L L E D me with YOU KNOW WHAT 🥹

Apart from that,Frost's writing made me feel autumn in my literal bones. She had so many cozy moments and scenes, accompanied with leaves and pumkin spice lattes, that I felt that I was IN Wayward Hollow.-Oh,my god I loved everything about this book 🍁.As a read,it is generally calm without big emotional ups & downs, making it perfect for your first read of the season!
To continue with, our main girl Nic is adorable🧡.Leaving the big life and settling to this small town suited her so good.It just made her real personality pop and her mood was ON TOP!She just clicked so good with everyone and made the
Welcome to Wayward Hollow-Where strangers become family and love finds a way
be more reality than a quote!
On the other side,Henry-okay let me sit first-was THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER boyfriend of the year.He was handsome,skilled-*coughing*🌶️,and a passionate vet.Actually,I have read just one another story with a vet mmc and maybe I love it more than I thought !

Added,I loved how my girl made peace with her inside during the story. She started as an insecure person and was her main character of her life by the end of the book-how beautiful to see her understand what she deserves 🥹

However, the only aspect that made me a little bit confused was that I felt we went from 0 to 100 with the main relationship.I get that something really specific happened that connected them, but I truly thought that we wanted more scenes with them until they were formal!Although, after that the relationship when with perfect pacing so I am not fussing around a lot!
Yet,when you have THE autumnal read, with the small town, lattes, pumkins, vibes & romance it is illegal to give anything under 5 starts!

out on Sept,4th🦋

Just finished reading an advanced copy of a book that was just released on September 4th called, A Love Like Pumpkin Spice. When Nic is betrayed and humiliated by the people in her life who are supposed to love and care for her most in this world, she decides it is for the last time and cuts ties with her family and moves away to the charming little town of Wayward Hollow with her best friend. This is their fresh start, and a chance to romanticize their lives. And when Nic finds a hurt kitten and takes it to Henry, the handsome town vet (and another kitten, and then another kitten!) fate might just be placing the perfect person into her life... if she is willing to work through her hurt and put her heart out there again and give Henry a chance.
I honestly needed a little time after finishing this story to process it and figure out how I wanted to write a review to convey just how I feel about this book. First off, the story was *chef's kiss*! All the fall vibes, small town charm, romance, coffee, and cute pets you could possibly ask for! Second, by the end of the prologue I was already fully immersed in this story and literally ready to go to bat for Nic! 👊🏽 I related to her character so much, I don't think I've ever highlighted that much of an ebook in my life! I don't want to get too personal but let me just say that I felt her pain and hurt by her toxic family IN.MY.BONES. This book honestly healed a part of me as Nic was healing throughout the story. While reading this book I felt seen and validated for some of the same hard decisions I've made in my own life to protect my peace and my well-being, just like Nic did in this story. And I truly cannot put into words how much that representation meant to me. Saying, "this was such a well written story" really just doesn't feel like enough, this book meant absolutely everything to me. ❤️📚

Thank you to Hailey Frost, the publisher, Love Notes PR, and Netgalley for this ARC of A Love Like Pumpkin Spice in exchange for an honest review.

A Love Like Pumpkin Spice is the start of Hailey Frost's new series, Wayward Hollow. This was a short, sweet, and cozy fall read full of lovable characters and adorable pets. Nic had an incredibly rough start. Her family is horrendous and nothing she does is ever good enough, despite being a recently retired famous actress. She escapes with her bff Lauren to a small town full of friendly residents who will do anything for each other. Tragedy strikes again once she arrives which leads her to the handsome and charismatic veterinarian Henry. As someone who works in the veterinary field, this book was right up my alley. I fell in love with the cute kitties and adorable husky.

Nic and Henry are adorable together. From the beginning Henry didn't stand a chance. He fell head over heels. Even with all the ups-and-downs Nic experienced in her personal life, Henry continued to support and encourage her. Marissa and Jay pissed me off. Hailey Frost did an excellent job eliciting such strong emotions from me. I wanted to reach in to strangle those two. It broke my heart to see how much Marissa, Jay, and Nic's parents have hurt Nic. But on the plus side are the hilarious friendships. The banter with Lauren, Caleb, and Kieran had me cracking up. I'm really excited to see how Lauren and Caleb's relationship unfolds.

Overall, this book was fast-paced and the ending felt a bit rushed but I will still be continuing the series. I wish we saw more of Henry's family but the found family vibes were immaculate.

For fans of:
- small town romance
- slow burn
- found family
- lots of cute pets
- veterinarian x retired actress

This is the perfect cozy book for fall. I am obsessed 🧡❤️🎃

A Love Like Pumpkin Spice definitely gave me that warm and cozy Gilmore Girls vibe that I look for in the fall! ❤️

Make sure you grab your pumpkin spiced latte and curl up with a cozy blanket when reading "A Love like Pumpkin Spice". This story will definitely put you in the fall spirit! I fell in love with Wayward Hollow and all of its magic.✨🕯️

Nicola Duncan and Henry were drawn together from the very first meeting when Nicola tried to save a cat that had been injured. Henry the town's beloved veterinarian and a perfect golden retriever boyfriend. Nicola has been hurt by her family and has had enough. She moved to Wayward Hollow for a fresh start.

Jensen Ackles is Henry's dog. 🤣 All of the pets in this book stole my heart! ❤️ The side characters were also fantastic. I can't recommend this book enough!

What a cute read this was, I did enjoy this read. The characters were great and I loved the found family we have by the end of this book.

However, the plot is very predictable and I could have told you what was going to happen by the end of the prologue.

It's an easy read though and requires zero brain cells to follow along. It was the perfect weekend read.

I enjoyed Hailey's writing style and I'll definitely be reading the next book in the series.

I expected more from this book. I really liked the first part of the book, but then it all went way too fast.

I really like how he is a vet, and his husky is adorable. I really like the small town and found family part in this. The romance is sweet, but very fast.

I loved this so much, it was such a cute story. I really enjoyed watching Nic finally stand up to her family and find her true family.
