In one of their first-ever documented adventures, bounty hunters Rhema—a grumpy, axe-wielding fighter—and Benny—her chipper, easily excitable dragon—save a bratty princess from a trickster fae prince.
But when they attempt to return her home, not only is Rhema growing an inconvenient attachment to the spitfire royal, but the princess is also being chased down by droves of sexy, dumb, and very violent fae men who claim she's their mate. In order for Rhema and Benny to make it to the Butter and Barmaids Festival on time, they have no choice but to seek out Rhema's hot bounty hunter rival, an expert of the fae realm, to help them uncover the mystery of where all these chiseled-jawed men are coming from—and stop them before the princess falls for their illustrious charm.
With a master’s degree social work, A.J. Braun loves to explore how people make sense of their world, relationships, and themselves. This, in combination with their deep love for the fantasy genre, inspired Braun to start their storytelling journey on the written page. When they’re not writing, you can also find Braun hanging out with their spouse and friends, cuddling their two black cats, participating in local sport leagues, and playing D&D into the wee hours of the night.
an absurd, silly parody of SJM fae fantasy and its impersonators, this novella doesn’t take itself seriously at all and is the perfect quick read.
the shrek x donkey (as a dragon) dynamic between rhema and benny was very entertaining, had to love it. never thought I’d meet a dragon obsessed w butter 😂
they rescue maidens from immortal fae men but notice things are feeling awry with a particular case. The story moves quickly so while I would’ve loved to learn more about the world, the pace never suffers from over detailing.
this also does a decent job of highlighting the repetitive and often ridiculous behaviors and “micro tropes” w these fae love interests.
I hope one day in the future i get to order a “velvet wrapped steel” latte special from my local coffee shop 🤭
A F*ckery of Fae & Fate is has the feeling of a comedy cop show in the fantasy setting. It's witty, chaotic adventures with LGBTQIA+ rep and a butter loving Dragon. It's entertaining novella with lots of reverence to other fantasy books.
⭐️ 5/5 Stars – If your Dungeons & Dragons campaign got drunk with The Princess Bride and then woke up in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, you’d get A Fckery of Fae and Fate.
🌶️ 2.5/5 Spice Rating – It’s not the point, but it is a point—and it delivers. Little nuggets of tension are scattered throughout like foreplay booby traps, until someone’s moaning into someone else’s mouth and a dragon accidentally joins the group chat. Tension-heavy, open door, and yes, there are lube jokes.
🖤 1.5/5 Darkness Rating – There’s blood. There’s betrayal. There’s a fae prince who explodes into flames mid-sex-proposal. But this is not a dark book. The heavier moments are always followed by Benny roasting someone (literally or emotionally).
⸻ What I Loved:
Sometimes a book comes along that’s just so perfectly ridiculous, so sharp and funny and full of chaotic heart, that all you can really say is: I loved it. A Fckery of Fae & Fate* is that book. The banter is impeccable. The satire is like butter-soaked brilliance served on a flaming platter. The way it throws every single fantasy trope into one novella and then roasts them all—while still making you care about the characters? Brilliant. It pokes fun at the big fantasy epics with the kind of wit only a butter-obsessed dragon, a kidnapped princess, and two emotionally unavailable lesbians could deliver. I laughed the entire time. No notes—except maybe: please write ten more.
⸻ Overall thoughts:
A.J. Braun took one look at every fantasy trope out there, snorted them like a line of magical glitter, and then rewrote them with a butter-slicked pen and a smirk. The pacing is fast but never messy, and the humor hits hard without ever sacrificing heart. There’s a rhythm to it—like every line is waiting to set up a punchline or a dagger to the ribs (emotionally or otherwise). I need a full cast audiobook, like Benny needs butterballs.
The dialogue absolutely carries, with banter that feels like it was written by a comedy writer moonlighting as a fantasy nerd. And somehow, underneath all the chaos and dragon-induced musical interludes, there’s real depth. The emotional threads are subtle but solid, hiding between axe swings and lube jokes. Benny’s voice is especially vivid—so much so that I could hear him singing (unfortunately) in my head long after I finished the book. But that’s on me, because I read it three times in twenty-four hours.
⸻ The Story (No Spoilers!):
She swung, she swore, she made fae men cry, Then moaned in the dark with a girl on her thigh. A dragon, a princess, and barely a date— It’s a f*ckery of fae and fate!
Fantasy romance, but make it a roast! A kidnapped princess, a grumpy axe-wielding bounty hunter, and a dragon with zero impulse control walk into a fae wedding… what happens next is pure fckery.*
I’m still laughing. Still quoting it. Still hearing Benny sing in my head (send help).
A hilarious spoof on romantasy tropes that will have you laughing out loud. The dragon Benny is the ultimate, golden hearted sunshine character and his bounty hunter rider is the grumpy one. It's a short, fun ride that will leave you waiting for the next one.
A fun and chaotic adventure with fun and chaotic characters. I really liked the dynamic between Rhema and Benny, and I hope we'll get to read more about them. Rhema is a character with a lot of potential, and even though the story was short and not meant to showcase the full scope of her personality it really managed to make her interesting and well rounded. What left me confused was the fact that while the book was clearly mocking the extremely over-used romantasy cliches, it seemed that it didn't really want to be too critical of them, and sometimes even fell into them, so that it felt more like it was trying to...I don't know, keep its feet in both shoes? Anyway, I'm curious to see what's next for this fucked up bounty hunter duo!
I received an eARC from the author and this represents my honest opinion
Book Review: A of Fae and Fate by A.J. Braun Rating: 4/5 stars
✨ A F🌸ckery of Fae and Fate by A.J. Braun is a delightful mix of humor, fantasy, and whimsical characters that kept me entertained from start to finish. The story follows Benny, a singing dragon with a peculiar love for butter, and it's hard not to be charmed by the absurdity and warmth this quirky character brings to the book.✨
✨What stood out to me the most was Benny’s singing. The concept of a dragon who sings is already fun, but the way Braun incorporates songs into the story adds a special touch. The lyrics are witty and funny, making me wish the book was already available in audiobook form so I could hear Benny’s songs out loud. ✨
✨The humor is another strong point. I found myself laughing more than once at the clever and sometimes absurd dialogue. The book's pace is brisk—I finished it in just a few hours—and I was left wanting more.✨
✨One of my favorite quotes from the book is: “Ass up. Face down. Can’t lose.” It perfectly captures the lighthearted and playful tone of the story.✨
✨Overall, A Flockery of Fae and Fate is a fun, enjoyable read. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s part of its charm. If you’re looking for something to brighten your day with a mix of fantasy and humor, this book is definitely worth picking up!✨
✨A huge thank you to A.J. Braun for providing me with an advance copy of this book. I truly enjoyed it, and I can’t wait to see what comes next!✨
Y'all, this is THE most fun I have EVER had reading. I feel like I can't even talk much about the story itself, because anything I say can and will ruin a punchline of some sort.
"We fucked once and then she stabbed me in the back. End of story." "It's like she's a bounty hunter or something?" "I hate you." "Admit it. You miss her." "I miss boobs."
This book is honestly exactly how my D&D campaigns tend to go, with me being a little chaos gremlin. Mix in every single fantasy/romantasy trope you can think of, and that's this novella. Satire is such a perilous ledge for me, it's usually a hit or miss. This one hit the target so hard, it was like Cary Elwes' Robin Hood in Robin Hood: Men In Tights and the Patriot Arrow.
AJ takes every single aspect of a romantasy, wraps it up in duct tape, cable ties, and cement, and tells you to have at it. This one is just so ridiculous, while also being so damn witty and enjoyable, that I just could not put it down. More Rhema and Benny adventures are a must! These two are a buddy-cop duo who love butter, boobs, and phase two.
I will be shoving this down everyone's throats for the foreseeable future. Insert AJ saying "That's what she said" here.
Thank you, AJ, for the opportunity to read this eARC!
Thank you A.J. Braun for sending me this advanced review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book was pure sapphic chaos. The snarky banter is amazing, and you will laugh so hard your eyes will water. It takes on all the infamous "fated mates" tropes from your standard fae romantasy novels, and turns them into a glorious parody.
Add in more inappropriate jokes than you can count, and a butter eating dragon with personal boundary issues, and you end up with a hilariously wild ride.
I was so excited to get an ARC copy of this book! Y’all this was such a fun read - I legit finished it in one night and I want more. It’s hilarious, unserious, and I loved how it poked fun at some of the ridiculous parts of romantasy that we love. I need more Rhema and Benny in my life!
This was such a fun and easy read! It makes fun of a lot of classic romantasy tropes in a light-hearted way that didn’t feel like the types of books I like to read were being attacked. Honestly, anything by AJ Braun is an automatic read for me.
I wasn’t expecting this to be such a hit for me - but for a short book this had so much! One horse (dragon) trope, one bed, ‘fck it’, enemies to lovers, dragons, fae, fated mates, mythical creatures and the banter was 🤌🏻
I love Rhema and enjoyed seeing her begin to love again 💘
I want more!! Will definitely be reading more from this duo!
I was grateful to receive an ARC from the author! This was so silly and fun— think romantasy parody / DnD adventure / Ella Enchanted. I had a blast and cracked up at all of the fun nods to (and teasing of) the romantasy genre!
This is a really fun and exciting read. It’s about a tough woman and her dragon who work as bounty hunters. They take on the toughest missions and have great chemistry, even communicating through their thoughts, which makes everything even more interesting. The mission they take on is full of action, magic, and unexpected twists. The author writes with great humor and a good pace.
Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your team. ❤️🌺
🧈 Summary: Rhema, is a bounty hunter who rescues princesses from fae males who are trying to trap them into marriage. Her dragon, Benny who loves butter, helps her on her quest to save the princesses of their kingdom, while collecting their bounty.
They have one bounty to collect before they can enjoy the Butter and Barmaids Festival. Benny is looking forward to eating all the butterballs and Rhema is hoping to meet a barmaid to help her forget her ex.
What they thought would be an easy rescue mission, turns out to be a disaster. Between a cryptic message from a fae prince, an ungrateful, spoiled princess, and a group of fae males who don’t seem to understand the word, “no”, will they make it to the festival on time?
🧈 Thoughts:
I could not put this book down. I have so many quotes and things that happened that made me laugh highlighted. This was a blast to read. The bantering between Rhema and Benny reminded me of Shrek and Donkey. Where Donkey loves waffles, Benny loves butterballs 🤣
The way this story ends made me chuckle and I truly hope A.J. writes more about these two and their bounty hunter adventures.
I wasn’t expecting many of the twists, or hidden Easter eggs from another fae series (which I couldn’t stop laughing over), and the Benny comments. This was such a fun read and I was so sad to read the ending, because I didn’t want it to end.
Thank you so much A.J. for sending me this ARC to read and review. I had so much fun reading this hysterically unique take on a fae Romantasy book.
Book Vibes:🐉🧈🪓🎶🏳️🌈👸🏻🦇🤦🏻♀️👩❤️💋👩🙉🐐
Book girlfriend and dragon boyfriend: Rhema and Benny have my heart 💓💓💓💓💓Their friendship and bantering were so much fun to read.
Title: A F*ckery of Fae & Fate Author: A.J. Braun Genre: LGBTQ / Fantasy Pages: 116
Rating: 4.5⭐️/5 (rounded up!)
“Sometimes love, much like destiny, isn’t ours for the taking.”
Grumpy bounty hunter Rhema and her butter-loving dragon Benny specialize in taking down hot, magical fae men who kidnap women. Since they’re immune to fae charm—Rhema’s a lesbian, Benny’s a dragon—they get the jobs no one else can handle. When they rescue the sharp-tongued Princess Gwyneth from a shady Fae Prince Arwel in Blossom Court, things get messy fast. Suddenly, she’s being hunted by a parade of sexy fae claiming she’s their mate. With fae chaos brewing and festival tickets to buy, Rhema and Benny team up with Rhema’s hot-shot rival to stop the madness before someone falls for the wrong enchanted abs.
A F*CKERY OF FAE & FATE is chaotic, clever, and laugh-out-loud funny—a sapphic parody that lovingly roasts every romantasy trope in the book. With one-bed mishaps, dramatic fae men, and a butter-obsessed singing dragon, Rhema and Benny are chaotic perfection. Between snack debates, sparkly claws, and awkward mind-chats, this novella balances wild humor with real heart. I so love the cover!—a bold, neon-pink explosion of chaos and charm that screams sapphic parody with florals, flair, and just the right amount of unhinged. And that goodbye message—the cutest! I’m already looking forward to more of Rhemy and Benny’s adventures—bring it on!
A big thanks to A.J. Braun for providing me with a digital ARC of this book!

What happens when a fantasy romance stops trying to be deep and starts throwing hands?
THIS. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS.
This is an absolute banger of a laugh, with almost every single fantasy romance trope you can think of thrown into it- but it’s done in a way that’s just absolutely roasting the shit out of them in the best way possible. Like PLEASE, there’s no “oh poor tortured brooding hot winged fae man” it’s “let’s clown on this asshole and his pecks and then roast him alive” DEAD.
It had me cackling so hard, I was WHEEZING 😂
Benny is truly an icon. I have a real thing for animal sidekicks, and god I would be absolutely full of shit if I said I didn’t need a dragon friend like Benny.
You’ve got dick jokes, inappropriately timed mind group chat moments, an FMC who’s possessive over her weapons, dragon nail trends and environmental advocacy, and Easter eggs for popular fantasy series (that was where the wheezing cackling came in).
Please if you want a good laugh, pick this up 😂 and yes, there is plot- with what I would call a non traditional happily ever after 🤍
I really, truly need more books about Rhema and Bennys adventures. With more songs from Benny, seriously- he’s a lyrical genius!
🧈🧈🧈🧈🧈🧈 Here’s your butter tribute Benny. May your nails stay slay and your shade stay savage 💅
Thank you so much to A. J. Braun for the ARC copy! I had the BEST time with this and I knew I would 😂
OMG!!!! This is definitely Shrek x ACOTAR x Monty Python x DND campaign and I honestly have never laughed so much in my life! Sapphic love, comedy, journeys and so much BUTTER
Benny- dragon bounty hunter extravaganza who is obsessed with butter and singing the weirdest songs and just wants to make Rhema happy.
Rhema- bounty hunter extraordinaire who has a talent for killing off magical fae men who want to kidnap women against their will. Her superpower? She’s lesbian so she won’t bend to the will of the magical men and their BS.
Gwyneth- princess who needs saving from every single male in existence and the cause of many MANY male deaths! She starts out grumpy and then …. Well, she has a change of heart….. no spoilers here!
This involved too many shenanigans and bbq winged men …. Trust me this is a bazillion times better than anything you’ve ever read!
Rhema + Benny is the duo of the year so far for me! I want a sarcastic dragon to be my companion too
Really loved how the pacing was quick, making this novella easy to devour in a day. Just enough plot to get ya hooked and ready for the next one in the series, and enough action to keep you interested in what's happening to the MCs.
Favorite part? The light teasing and inclusion of popular romance tropes. I legit cackled so many times!
My only gripe? That the spice could have been juuuuuuuuust a tad more. But there was enough yearning and horny thoughts to keep me invested :)
I received an eARC from the author; this did not impact my review and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
We’re not here for a long time we’re just here for a good time! I mean I had no expectations going into this and was just thoroughly excited to get an ARC copy. This book had me giggling and saying WTF am I reading but in the best way. This book is like reading the roast of the romantasy genre. The dragon Benny is a whole vibe and our FMC Rhema is a badass bounty hunter who has a love for the ladies and is not falling for any high lord of bullshit. The banter between bounty hunter and her dragon is hillarious. This book is just a good fun time and I can honestly say I would love to read more short stories of the adventures of these two.
This was a funny fantasy short read, but packed so much into such a small story that you get action and adventure on every page it truly kept me entice throughout the whole story. I never wanted to put it down if you love fantasy you’ll absolutely love this the added in sapphic part of the fantasy, just made it all the better to me all the adventures they go through together to save princess from these fake prince. Men is just wild and so funny. I was laughing out loud at the banter between the dragon and your main character there a grumpy sunshine duo, but the dragon is the sunshine. It’s funny, lovable and enticing. I loved every moment.
This is the funniest, most ridiculous story (in all the best ways) that I have read so far this year! 🩷
Rhema is a bounty hunter tasked with rescuing a princess who was kidnapped by some fae. With her trusty dragon, she crashes the wedding and proceeds to Hulk-Smash the pervvy fae-boys and rescue the damsel.
I adore Benny, the butter obsessed, show tune singing dragon, who is the sunshine to Rhema's grump.
If you love the chaotic adventures, LGBTQ+ rep, banter, and are deeply curious about why exactly fae men are always sooooooo much older than their fated mates, this is the perfect novella.
"If the size is too girthy, we highly recommend our new and improved enchanted lubricant, You Take Me So Well. Going for a hot deal right now at only five gold coins."
Okay truly, this is a hilarious and unhinged novella that you all need to read. A dragon that talks to his bounty hunter with their minds, a bounty hunter that is a badass queen with some trauma, and then add in a love triangle? Yes please.
I love how this novella pokes fun of fantasy romance books. I love the tropes that are in the book that will clearly lead to **romance** but in the funniest way. I laughed so much while reading this.
Such a cute and funny read! Had such a blast with Bennys crazy singing and spunky personality along side Rhema’s cranky, fae-killer, take no shit attitude 😆 they were the perfect pair and the adventure was so fun! I diedddd at the fae training and all of them being “in love”. I was cracking up and smiling the entire read! I also loved Gwenthys softness that was hiding layers of wild and fun and just all the little details and additions fit perfect into this quick read!
Plus sapphic, one bed, and the banter 😮💨 sooooo good and well done! Can’t wait for more of these fun lil Romantasy reads from AJ!
This was a book that I drew me in by it's cover when I saw it being delivered to a TikTok creator in a PR box & I had to grab it - & sooooo glad I did.
A fun, tongue-in-cheek, romantasy spoof that will have you laughing out loud, smiling as you realise the jabs at the romantasy genre on a whole as well & some specific 'well known' series.!!
It was fun, easy to read, definitely took some very interesting jabs at the romantasy genre (especially a certain series with fae courts) but I loved the characters.
Benny is definitely a laugh as a singing, butter loving dragon but Rhema's snarky self was perfect to balance it out.
I will definitely be wanting to read more in this series.
This Rom-Com by AJ is a fantastic short read. While the base idea is a spoof of other romantasy there is a very strong character development and a plot with some very unexpected twist and turns.
I found that there was a very compelling and heartfelt story about friendship and closure behind all the laughs and gags and so much singing!
The dynamics between a butter obsessed dragon and their rider reminded me a bit of Eddie and Venom from those Venom trailers, I haven't watched those movies though - but in my head somehow I had Benny speaking in Venom's voice. :D
received an arc copy from the author! thank you, AJ! 💜
I love spoofs/parodies so much. This novella isnt a complete dragging of the romantasy genre, but it pokes fun at it tastefully (and i am an avid reader of both so im allowed to make fun of it, too lol). Even if it's spoofy and goofy, the story itself is GREAT. The plot, the tensions, the romance, the creepy fae men, and a talking dragon? all GREAT. ill probably end up rereading this again soon, and i don't reread books that often so that's saying something.
Do you remember those movies that were parodies of famous books/movies? Like The Starving Games & Vampires Suck? Well, this book reads like those movies. It is a parody of another "A _____ of ______ and _____" book and well romantasy in general. It was absolutely hilarious and a brilliant work of comedic romantasy. While it is a parody, it also stands on its own. The main character Rhema and her bonded dragon Benny are the best dynamic duo around. I feel for Benny b/c as a southern b&r woman, I too would rampage if I didn't have anymore butter. Yall should pick up this novella ASAP!
This one was a great mix of everything and anything fantasy. Pace was everything, humor was everything-this entire novella was everything a novella should be especially with a title like "A F*ckery of Fae & Fae" LOL! I literally was a nerd reading this and it showed with all the giggling and laughing I did. We love organized chaos, with magic, and a little bit of emotion it is necessary in every book.
I will totally be looking out for any book/novella from A.J from her on out!
This FF novella was a wonderful quickie that had me laughing so hard, I shot my tea out my nose! Think of a Mel Brooks movie or Monty Python short but in book form and from women's point of view. Plus, who doesn't love a signing dragon? But let's get serious for a moment as our FMC works through some personal stuff that's just enough while being part of the story.
I cannot wait to read more adventures of Rhema and Benny! Do not sleep on this read! It's worth it!
