Embark on a timeless adventure in this fresh, narrative retelling of Pilgrim’s Progress, now brought to life in contemporary English for today’s readers!
Follow Christian, burdened by the weight of his doubts and fears, as he sets out from the City of Destruction toward the Celestial City. Along the way, he faces pressures such as traversing the Slough of Despond, standing firm in the face of Apollyon, and navigating the dazzling snares of Vanity Fair, all which threaten to pull him from the path of following Christ. With each step, Christian’s journey illuminates the eternal struggles of faith, hope, and redemption.
This faithful narrative reimagining retains John Bunyan’s profound allegories, making their truths accessible without compromising their depth. Whether encountering this classic for the first time or rediscovering it anew, readers of all ages will find inspiration, guidance, and renewed courage in Christian’s quest.
Perfect for personal devotion, group study, or as a gift, this updated Pilgrim’s Progress bridges the gap between Bunyan’s world and ours, offering timeless wisdom for modern pilgrims navigating the path of following Jesus Christ.
Rediscover a classic. Rekindle your faith. Take the journey.
Shawn P. Robinson has a passion for teaching God’s Word and seeing people grow in their faith and has had the privilege of serving in Christian ministry as an Associate Pastor, Lead Pastor, and as a Church Planter.
In 2017, a viral infection in his brain pulled him from pastoral ministry, changing the course of his life from a focus on ministry to trying to recover. Eventually, Shawn’s health forced him to step down from his pastoral role. Amid the illness, Shawn began to write a children’s book for his sons and from that grew a passion for writing fiction, which has proven to be an exciting blessing from God during a time when he can no longer serve in vocational ministry.
As Shawn continued to write fiction, learning to trust the Lord in this new direction of life, he quickly found joy both in sharing stories and in sharing gospel allegories.
In time, the Lord laid it on Shawn’s heart to create a modern-day rewrite of Pilgrim’s Progress, one which might not only remain faithful to the original but also be presented in a more contemporary narrative format, hopefully opening up the story to a new generation. With this, Shawn set out to provide study guides with deep and challenging questions based on a Pilgrim’s Progress study he offered to his church years before.
Shawn has a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Studies from Briercrest Bible College in Saskatchewan and a Master of Divinity from Carey Theological College in British Columbia. Shawn is ordained with the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches in Ontario, Canada. Shawn and his wife and two sons live in Southwestern Ontario.
I have always loved this story. For me personally, some of the beauty is lost in the modernization of the story. There are also some things this author left out: e.g. when Christian is speaking to By-ends and his friends and Hold-the-world speaks for their group, Christian says he will answer from God's Word and Hold-the-world answers, "Uh...God's what?" He didn't know about God's Word! That's all left out. Made me wonder what else is left out. Still, the bulk of the story is there along with the truth of the salvation message. That is what matters. Christian and Hopeful's story end always makes me cry as I, a fellow pilgrim long for the Celestial City they have entered. Ignorance's end stands as a warning to all who seek to enter by another way. "Come Lord Jesus, come!"
This is a slightly unusual one to review - the book, Pilgrim's Progress is of course a classic, timelessly presenting a journey of faith, through the ups and downs of a lifetime following Christ. The original, which I last read three or four years ago, does use language that can be harder to access, and so a more modern translation is a welcome read. The risk of course, is that the translation could be fraught with the danger of losing much of the original beauty, poetry and depth of meaning. This translation avoids that pitfall, presenting all of the original meaning, whilst being a little more accessible to the modern-day reader. The author (Shawn P Robinson, not John Bunyan) includes notes explaining why certain editorial decisions were made. The text also keeps Bunyan's original poetry and songs at the end of each chapter, as a nod to the original, plus Shawn humbly states that he may not be able to do justice to a re-writing of these elements. Overall, a great way to re-read a classic, and dare I say even offering the reader an opportunity the get more depth of understanding out of the story than the original. The message is as clear today as it was 2000 years ago,and since creation. Accept God's free gift to you, that whosoever believes in the Lord Jesus Christ shall be saved and receive eternal life with joy.
John Banyan wrote the original "Pilgrim's Progress" in the late 1600s. The original version was tough to read. Praise God for Shawn P. Robinsons this contemporary "Rewalk" edition. Shawn was blessed by God with a brain infection which pushed him into a mental rehab exercise to bring us a clear, and yet concise translation of Bunyan's original.
Please, read the entire message of this book. Be sure to read all the footnotes and reference the Biblical footnotes for supporting clarity.
A very enjoyable and enlightening message in book form. A true and Neverending story. The path is narrow but brings joy as you journey to the Eternal City.
This rendition of The Pilgrim's Progress made it much more understandable than the original. I liked the notes at the end of each chapter, explaining Robinson's reason for the wording he chose. The view of heaven makes me excited for the time that I, too, will enter through the gates to meet my Saviour, Jesus Christ!
I'm so excited about this book! It's been a long time in process, putting this Rewalked edition together! The Rewalked edition follows the details, flow, and allegory of the original, just in a more contemporary and more personal manner! I hope this version of Pilgrim's Progress helps you to grow in your faith! https://mybook.to/PPRewalked
I am giving this book 3 stars, and that it simply because I love the original so much. When I read the summary for this book and looked at the authors intention with "rewalking" I was excited. I truly love the story, but words in it are aged, and I was expecting this book to give a more modern retelling. I was disappointed. I did not read this book right alongside the original, but I am not sure how much was truly changed.
I want to thank the author for allowing me to read an advanced copy for free.
