Quick disclaimer: I am friends with many of the contributors to this book, so it is only natural for me to be rooting for the success of this anthology. Plot Twist is a collection of personal writings in the form of essays, short stories, and poetry, interspersed with photographs. It's heartfelt, it's vulnerable, and it's a showcase of what budding Filipino writers have to offer. I do feel that a few pieces could have done with either a little more editing or a little more creative flair. There were a lot of strong ideas that I felt could have had a stronger execution had they been given a little more time to breathe and simmer. I can't say I was as moved by the text just as I was by how this collection came to be. Still, it has proven to be a solid, calming Sunday morning read.

My favorites in this anthology have to be Gwayne Macario's One Sunday, Emmanuel Peren's Kadiliman, and Pranz Billones' Under a Fake Electric Sky We Had A Real Conversation.

Plot Twist: Anthology Vol. 1 is a collection of Prose, Poetry, and Photographs by 16 contributors and was edited by Claire Betita de Guzman. All works are anchored on the prompt of “Navigating and surviving life’s unexpected turns.” I like to think that Plot Twist came at the right time in my life where I am experiencing and living my own plot twist so it was both heartbreaking and inspiring to know that I am not alone in this.

There were some hard-hitting and relatable pieces that actually brought me to tears. Even reaching out to the writer and sending them a voice message and a selfie of me crying post-reading her piece. Shoutout to you Kat!

A word that can best describe Plot Twist is vulnerable. Each piece, regardless of medium and format, shared a level of vulnerability that’s so personal and deep. A kind of vulnerability that makes you feel naked because it’s out there for the world to read, pick apart, and digest.

If you’re also going through some challenges in life, your own version of a plot twist, you can find solace in reading Plot Twist: An Anthology. It’s like a warm, familiar hug that lets you know that you will survive this.

To live is to be a walking book of our own life story waiting to be shared. Every day is a page we fill merely by existing until we form chapters of experiences that shape and define us. But despite being authors of our own lives, we, sometimes, encounter twists that deviate from our planned narrative.

For better or for worse, how do we "𝘯𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦'𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘴"?

In 𝑷𝒍𝒐𝒕 𝑻𝒘𝒊𝒔𝒕: 𝑨𝒏 𝑨𝒏𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚 𝑽𝒐𝒍.1, sixteen contributors have bared their soul to try to answer this very question thru essays, poems, photographs, and short stories. It is a collection soaked with vulnerable emotions, but made strong by the quiet resolute of the human spirit in face of difficulties.

Illustrating this, "𝑶𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑻𝒖𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒍" by Ana Zarzuelo is a powerful reflection about overcoming grief and depression. Kat Lenorio's "𝑰 𝑨𝒎 𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒆" stands as a bold affirmation of self in the face of existential doubt. Meanwhile, Richard Caffige’s poem "𝑲𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒔𝒖𝒌𝒖𝒓𝒐𝒊" celebrates the beauty in breaking—and the deeper grace found in accepting those cracks as part of one’s wholeness.

This collection also explores themes of identity, growth, love, the definition of success, and healing in ways that feel deeply relatable. Personally, I found a strong connection with Claire Betita De Guzman's "𝑾𝒆𝒍𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝑴𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒅"—a poignant personal essay about her struggle as a working mother torn between pursuing her career and prioritizing her family.

And also C.L. Balagoza's quirky love story, 𝑷𝒂𝒈-𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒈 𝒔𝒂 𝑾𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒈 𝑯𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒈𝒂𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒂𝒈-𝑼𝒍𝒂𝒏, transported me back to my teenage years, when I believed that getting exactly what I wished for was the peak definition of happiness. But — plot twist — it wasn’t.

Ultimately, this book is a reminder that life goes off-script. More often than we'd like to.

But for better or for worse, when in doubt, an advice from Pranz Billones' photo is worth remember:

"𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘶𝘱 𝘰𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧."

Indeed, there are uncertainties, and this anthology showcased pieces that focused on plot twists that happen in life. I liked how different pieces were featured such as prose, poetry and photographs.

While I liked reading from diverse authors who are also bookish friends of mine, it's kind of a hit or miss for me when it comes to the writing pieces being cohesive with the theme of plot twists.

Nonetheless, I am happy for my bookish friends getting their pieces published. The passion for writing really is infectious with this anthology.

I'm one of the contributors, but this review is for all the other works except mine ("Out of the Tunnel").

Breaking down is needed for breaking through
You have to stop in order to see the fuller view
It is such a triumph to see yourself once again rise
For you've overcome the lows, now cherish the highs
- Richard Nikki Cafifge

My Synopsis:
This is a collection of poems, short stories, essays, and photographs, all with the theme of handling life's unexpected changes.

My thoughts:
I loved everything here. I love that there's a mix of formats because each format hits differently. There's also a mix of languages, there are English and Filipino pieces. As someone not used to reading in Filipino, it was slow going for me, but I was eventually able to understand and appreciate those pieces, with some help. The jump from fiction to non-fiction exercised my empathy and imagination in different turns. The photographs were an interesting break from words to pictures. All these together presented the theme in a complementary way and it left me feeling like I can confidently take on the next challenge life throws.

I'm so excited for Volume 2!

Other quotes I like:
"But with everything I've learned about love and letting go, the most important thing is loosening your grip on the how and holding on to your why." - Fay Sebastian

"This place, unlike any other places out there, doesn't require you to move to be able to reach it. It reaches you." - Kat A. Leonorio

"Under the Fake Electric Sky We Had a Real Conversation" - Pranz Kaeno Billones
(This is actually the title of the photo, but I thought the title itself is brilliant!)

"As they looked at the sky,
He hoped for the best
While she hoped for the worst." - Shiandra Mendoza

"It was the tumultuous and tragic end to an argument that raged between the two, a father whose [child] had turned into a stranger and a young man desperately seeking acceptance from the person he loved most." - Carlo Rey R. Martinez

3.5 stars rounded up.

Amidst everything that's been happening, it's easy to become absorbed with your own life, and your own struggles, easy to sink into a hole of self-pity, a hole that more often than not isolates you.

The pieces in Plot Twist serve as a heartfelt reminder that you are not alone, no matter what you may think. Whether it's an inspiring poem that you need to keep tucked for a bad day, or an essay that deals with a similar struggle to yours, readers will surely find something to connect with in this slim volume.

However, I do think there's a glaring inconsistency with regards to the quality of the pieces, and that keeps me from wholeheartedly giving this four stars. Some exhibit obvious creative skill, others not so much. Regardless, I can appreciate it for what it is, and the pieces that resonate were truly, deeply moving in my opinion.

True to its title, this anthology caught me off guard more than once. A few entries genuinely made me blink—eyes wide open at the unexpected plot twists. But more than that, I think its real strength lies in the sincerity of the pieces. You can truly feel the heart poured into each story. It’s amazing how much of an emotional rollercoaster I went through while reading it—all while waiting in line to vote for senatorial elections. (Can you believe I finished the entire book before I even got to actually vote? That’s how absorbed I was. And also, that’s how crappy the situation was at our voting precinct.)

My top five favorites (in no particular order):
Under a Fake Electric Sky We Had a Real Conversation by Pranz Kaeno Billones
One Sunday by Gwayne Clyde Macario
Eyes Wide Open by Carlo Rey R. Martinez
Out of the Tunnel by Ana Zarsuelo
Kadiliman by Emmanuel Peren

Anthologies can be a hit or miss, but Plot Twist hits more than it misses. And, the pieces that did hit, punched me in the gut. This collection of essays, stories, poems, and images delivers the feels, often in poignant ways. It lives up to its title, giving out satisfying to quietly unsettling twists.

Several pieces left a lingering ache I didn’t expect to feel. As a papa’s girl, I don’t know what I would have done if I lost my father early, the way Bana did in Out of the Tunnel. It made me sob so hard I had to pause and collect myself before moving on to the next. The poem, Kintsukuroi, felt like a love letter, with Chard telling me that being broken can be beautiful.

However, not every twist landed equally for me, especially the ones written in Tagalog. But it’s only because it’s challenging for me to read and understand the language when written on paper (I can converse in Tagalog, but for the life of me, my head and sinuses literally hurt when I attempt to read books, stories, and poetry in Tagalog — so I’m so sorry). I know, though, that they still brought something to the table that many appreciate.

So, while Plot Twist is the kind of book you can dip into between reads, I found myself bingeing on it and finishing it in one sitting. I bet you will, too, when you get your copy (if you haven’t yet).

This anthology is a heartfelt and inspiring collection that brings together impressive literature from various Filipino voices, all beautifully curated by Claire Betita De Guzman. The book captures the emotional journey from resistance to acceptance. It conveys the unpredictable turns life can take, reminding us that change is not only inevitable, but it’s often necessary. Sometimes, the changes we fear or reject the most turn out to be the ones that help us grow. Disappointments, in hindsight, become moments of clarity and even gratitude.

This collection is particularly special because it showcases the richness of Filipino experiences and culture. The stories, illustrated through both words and images, capture battles as well as life-changing moments, reflecting our spirit and emotions. These emerging Filipino voices deserve to be heard and celebrated.

Though each piece in Plot Twist carries its own unique message, Welcome to Motherhood struck me the most, especially in my current season of life. It felt deeply personal, like it was written just for me. It affirmed the choices and sacrifices I’ve made, and most of all, it reminded me that I’m not alone on this path. It’s comforting to know that others have walked this journey too, with all its joys, challenges, and quiet triumphs.

In these 25 works from 16 authors who opened their hearts, readers will find a piece of themselves from the
pages.

Life is filled with plot twists, that is known. We all know it. We all have experienced it. And sometimes, "plot twist" already feels ironic to its name. But whether big or small, life's surprises do not make us stay the way we are.

The best example is the last piece of the anthology, which is about motherhood, written by the editor herself. It is a testament that life's sudden turns can happen to anyone, and that even someone who has seen more in life and been in its course earlier (in this case, compared to all of the other contributors), is not prepared for its arrival. The difference is that it's all in the past.

Why did I say that?

Because the contributors are, let's say, yet starting on their journeys.

Based on their writings, youth is evident. Each one is still learning what path to take, what colors to show, what meanings to unravel as life loves to throw many lessons — despite them not asking for it. I'd like to say that the inaugural volume of Plot Twist is intended to those people who are in that stage. Those that are doubtful, lost, and saplings — but bearer of the future.

Essays, poems, stories, and even photos — voices are different, but everyone echoes one truth:

Life is not linear, that is known. And as we go on with life, losing is inevitable. We lose comfort so we may learn patience.
We lose our confidence so we may rediscover ourselves. We lose chances so we may learn to value them, to be persistent, to be changed. We lose our loved ones to understand that life does not bend to us — we always have to find strength, healing, and faith to move forward. These are the requirements of growth.

During the book launch, revealed are the varying favorite reads of the audience. This repeats what I mentioned earlier: this book resonates. It is quite nostalgic, and I cannot help but root for each of them.

My favorites are the heartfelt "One Sunday" and the cinematic "Eyes Wide Open" and the magical realism entry," Ang Pag-ibig sa Walang Hanggang Tag-ulan." Moreover, I also find the photographs strategic as they highlight the mundane — the opposite of the eponymous theme. They are delightful breaks from the entries that are, we can consider, bleak.

There's no point in magnifying what could've done better in this anthology. Let's trust the people behind tis project to know them. After all, the book talks about learning, and learning well comes with time. With that, I am looking forward to reading more.

Plot Twist is honest to its title, but it does not anchor "plot twist" as the unprecedented shifts in our lives. Rather, it highlights how embracing the change and growing from it (or with it) is the plot twist that defines us.

A collection of thought-provoking essays, poems, short stories and photographs that will make you pause and reflect and/or deeply feel the emotions embedded in each piece because all of us, one way or another, had been through or will receive a curveball.

It is a short read...but every piece packs a punch.

The authors wrote about grief, the feeling of loss, reluctance to move on, letting go, dealing with suffering. But above these, the entire collection speaks of hope and moving on and moving forward with purpose.

I read it the whole morning since waking up today and needed to have a break in between pieces because of the lines/scenes that deeply resonated with me.

Looking forward to volume 2!

Plot Twist is a powerful and heartfelt anthology that captures the resilience of the human spirit through deeply personal essays on change, uncertainty, and unexpected turns in life. With each story, the writers bare their truths—some tender, some painful, and others quietly triumphant.

This collection is a reminder that no one's path is ever a straight line. Life interrupts, reroutes, and sometimes completely derails what we thought was certain. But within those disruptions, there's often growth, healing, and even beauty.

Among the standout pieces, I Am Here, One Sunday, Eyes Wide Open, and Out of the Tunnel resonated with me the most. Each of these essays offered a unique voice and emotional depth that lingered. I Am Here felt like an affirmation—a quiet reclaiming of space and presence. One Sunday was introspective and poignant, capturing a fleeting moment that revealed something lasting. Eyes Wide Open offered a raw and honest reflection that many will likely find relatable. And Out of the Tunnel was exactly what the title promised: a story of moving through darkness into light.

I also really love the free postcard that reads "Your life does not get better by chance. It gets better by change." It perfectly encapsulate the spirit of this anthology. It's the kind of book that doesn't just invite you to read—it invites you to reflect.

Whether you're navigating a transition or simply love stories that honor the real and the raw, Plot Twist is a comforting, inspiring read. It reminds us that while we can't always control the twists, we can still shape the story.

Life has a way of throwing unexpected turns and sometimes a book comes into your life at exactly the right moment. This anthology is a beautifully woven collection of stories, essays, poetry, and art that reflect the messiness, hope, and strength found in life’s detours.

This book doesn’t promise answers but it offers comfort, connection, and the kind of quiet strength that stays with you long after the last page. If life feels messy or uncertain for you right now, Plot Twist might just be the reminder you need: that you’re not alone, and that your story is still unfolding.

This book will always have my heart. Yes, I am one of the contributors of this Anthology so I can be biased with this review. BUT, one this is for sure every piece is a reflection of change whether it be fiction or non-fiction. These stories carry emotion, life experience, healing and a reminder that unexpected turns in life bring us to where we are supposed to be--here, breathing and living.

Covers a diverse set of topics pertaining to various plot twists that happen in life. Basically, for me it's a hit or miss collection of fiction and nonfictional prose, poetry and photographs. This is because I wish more of the works delved into dealing with the plot twists, rather than lead up to them and then it's done.

I'm so proud of my friends who contributed to this collection, and it was a joy reading their entries as well. That is to say, that it doesn't affect my feelings about the book in this simple book review.

Sometimes, a book finds you at the exact moment you need it most.🌷

“Plot Twist”, edited by Claire Betita de Guzman, isn’t just a collection of essays , it’s a lifeline. One particular story hit me so deeply, I found myself in tears. It felt like the writer had reached across the page to say, “You’re not alone. You can do this.” I love when this happens.🌷

In that moment, I felt seen. Like we were kindred souls. 💓
That warmth stayed with me… and today, I let it pour out through a little artwork this book inspired me to create. 🎨

Books like this, ones that stir your soul, comfort your heart, and quietly whisper hope, are the ones I’ll always hold close.💓

If you’re going through life’s unexpected turns, this anthology will remind you of the strength already within you.🌷

It's Akdang Pinoy (Filipino Authors) Month, and I'm determined to make the most of it. I bought a copy of Plot Twist because I know a few of the contributors, even if I tried not to let personal connections affect my read of the anthology.

It didn't seem to matter anyway, as a couple of the pieces on my top picks list were by authors I know from my book club, in particular for their cohesiveness, imagery, emotional delivery, and narrative flow.

For prose in English, there was a feel-good quality to Gwayne Clyde Labao Macario's "One Sunday," with a lesson in there about taking chances, trusting fate, and saying "f— it, I'm going to be brave today." The plot twist and reveal was excellent in "Eyes Wide Open" by Carlo Rey R. Martinez, and the emotional journey the author takes you on was full of both heartache and hope.

And my absolute fave of this entire book had to be Ana Zarsuelo's "Out of the Tunnel" because it hit me right in the feels from the first page. I too am a Daddy's girl who lost her father. And I could identify with the situation of losing a parent who was also the family matriarch and my boss, only to be stuck in a business I only entered for love of that person. This piece spoke to me in the best and most heartbreaking ways, and I will admit I got a bit teary eyed while reading it. The author gave me a glimpse of her soul and the darkest part of her life, and it was such a privilege to be gifted with someone's story in this way. I can't imagine how much courage it required to not only write this, but share this with the world.

I'll admit I'm not much of a poetry reader, but this is my month for reading out of the box, so I read every poem, and while not all of them were to my taste, I found something to enjoy in each. Special shoutout to "Kintsukoroi" by Richard Nikki Cafifge for its uplifting message about the beauty of brokenness and mending.

I am also not great at Tagalog, but I pushed my way through even if I sometimes felt like I was looking up way too many vocabulary words for short pieces. Of the Tagalog pieces, my favorite story would probably be the modern folktale "Ang Pag-Ibig Sa Walang Hanggang Tag-ulan" by C.L. Balagaza for the vivid imagery and elements of magic realism. I also appreciated the thematic solidarity and chiaroscuro-style imagery in the three poems by Emmanuel Peren ("Kadiliman," "Pagtanggi," and "Pagkubli at Pagyakap").

I did have a few issues with some of the stories and poems, and part of that is personal preference, while part I think is that these pieces maybe could have used a couple more revisions.

But otherwise it's a solid (and quick!) read. I actually got through about half of it while waiting in line in the bank a few days back. The only reason I ended up spending four days on it is I decided to start over and journal the experience of reading each piece in the anthology.

Plot Twist is a series of anthologies that collects writing and photography of people from diverse backgrounds. In its first offering, we see sixteen contributers offer essays, short stories, poetry, and photography bound by a general topic of people facing life’s twists and turns — and we respond and cope with them.

With the awareness that some writers are in their early stages of writing, there are pieces that I felt writing could’ve been polished, themes used in a more clever ways and narrative structures that are too familiar. However, there’s value with how raw they were written and how honest the emotions are portrayed.

As the foreword says, this is ‘a hand reaching out and a reminder that we are not alone…’, and I think the collection succeeds as an emotional companion. Most of the entries feel like they were grabbed directly from people’s diaries and are bravely presented to the world. These tales of musings on life and death, reviewing past and present relationships, discovering other lenses to view life, and the resolve to continue are all presented to us with the emotional weight they all carry and the fact that no one is actually completely prepared for life.

I recommend Plot Twist for fans of self-help and readers on the lookout for writers on the rise. With the future installments of Plot Twist, I look forward for collection of more diverse, yet all the same universal, experiences that will continue to encourage the writers within us to come forward and share our stories and accompany the readers who need it most.

These individuals took on the challenge of sharing a piece of themselves - a glimpse into their beautiful minds - to craft stories that will move you, surprise you, break your heart, and uplift you in the most unexpected ways.

Plot Twist is true to its title. Every contribution offers a plot twist that will either make you or break you. Maybe that’s an exaggeration—but that’s genuinely how I felt while reading the prose, poetry, and photographs in this anthology.

The contributors bare their souls and raw emotions in this one (even when some pieces are fiction). I may know some of them personally, but the voices they’ve shared through their writing allowed me to know them a little more deeply. Every piece tells a story that is brave, heartfelt, reflective, and relatable in its own way.

I like how diverse the collection is. There are prose and poetry about acceptance, realization, inspiration, and more—but I found many of them to have a gloomy atmosphere. Weird take, maybe, but that’s how I felt while reading. Probably a good thing, since it added to the overall experience.

All in all, it was an emotional read—comforting, and even mending at times throughout the journey.

Plot Twist is a collection of short stories, essays and poems of Filipino authors sharing their personal journey of triumphs, challenges and redirection. They shared their voices thru writing and it takes a lot of courage to do it. It was emotional and comforting at the same time. I cried to some pieces. I love annotating this on my end and even write short messages to the authors.

I gave this 5 stars because of its authenticity. I love how these authors bared their hearts out to us in the hopes we find our own path, embrace imperfection and most of all, our purpose in life. It was a beautiful collection. Congratulations Ms. Claire and everyone who are part of this anthology!
