Rate this book
An unconventional young woman, a disenchanted scout, and a journey more difficult than anyone could imagine.

Kate McGrath and her family join a wagon train heading to the open spaces and promises of the American West. She is eager for a life of adventure free from society’s suffocating conventions, but those expectations follow her out into the wilderness. Kate faces storms, stampedes, and swollen rivers with courage and steadfast faith, but is set adrift when her daydreaming heart is captivated by a handsome scout.

Jacob Munroe is scouting for a wagon train yet again, but his wandering ways have lost their appeal. When he meets the McGrath family, Jacob is drawn to the peace they possess despite their hardships. Especially Kate. She is full of intriguing wild and strong, yet kind and gentle. She is a balm to his angry heart and restless soul, but brings with her a faith in a God whom Jacob is convinced doesn’t care.

Then tragedy strikes. Kate’s faith is tested and Jacob’s world is shattered, and they both face impossible choices.

Will their journey across the wilderness bring them peace or tear their worlds apart?

~

Set in 1859 along the American frontier, These Wild Dreams of Ours is a story of faith and perseverance. From beginning to end, the frailty of humanity and the power of the Creator to protect and preserve shines through a compelling story full of suspense, action, and love.

4.7 stars (5/10 hearts). I really do a rotten job of reading blurbs, y'all. I was convinced this was a marriage of convenience set in the late 1800s Wild West. It's a romance, set in 1859, on a wagon trail West. (I think I mixed it up with another book). Anyways, I eventually reread the blurb properly and figured out where we were actually headed, and was able to enjoy the story better. I definitely loved the prairie setting! It reminded me a lot of Little House on the Prairie, actually. There were some great descriptions scattered throughout the story. And while I'm talking of the writing, there were also some unique metaphors that I really enjoyed.

The characters were another of the story's strong points. I loved Kate's family. They were so loving, so warm, so genuine. Even her mother, who started out as a bit of a nag, redeemed herself eventually. And the brothers, especially Danny, were so fun—and the father was lovely. As for Jacob, he was pigheaded mule for most of the story, but he was a great guy and I loved his genuine love for Kate. Andrew I never really cared for, though he didn't end up as bad as I expected, and I admit I really enjoy the banter of Jacob's partner. Also, the crazy trapper whose name escapes me was AWESOME. The only people I really disliked were the wagon train leader and the soldier at the fort. Thorough villains, each. Kate herself I had a few issues with. Mostly I really struggled with her take on the whole 'she's not like other girls' trope. There were so many ways to make Kate unique, and she WAS unique. I was annoyed that a lot of it was made to hinge on her clothing choices, because I really struggle to picture an American wagon train in 1859 not having an absolute bird, to say nothing stronger, if one of the young women wore her brother's trousers consistently. I do love the point about the bonnet, and the cowgirl work totally makes sense, but even Laura Ingalls Wilder did haying with her Pa in a skirt—and she was in the remoteness of a western field. It just felt like such a modern take to me... But Kate had many great character points, and especially towards the end of the novel I admired her so much for her selflessness and strength.

I admit romance isn't my preferred genre, but I enjoyed the plot of this story. There was excitement, and the author plainly showed many of the tribulations of wagon trains, but it was mostly slice of life, with a nice slow pace. I was a bit less of a fan of the misunderstanding and fight that ended up towards the middle, but it all worked out so well and brought in such a great ending that I couldn't complain. I actually really appreciated seeing Kate's struggle between Andrew and Jacob. I could so see myself in her position, as someone who also wants to measure up and make my family proud. But my favourite thing, and what turns this into a 5 star, was the message. I loved the message of true love, and trust, and surrendering dreams but still staying true to how he made you. The end of the book was particularly striking. It was lovely to over and over hear the characters affirm their faith in God. His love was so prevalent and his truth spoken so powerfully!

I read this book in 2 days, and really struggled to put it down. Actually, I read it so fast I'm afraid I forgot some of it. But I do remember I enjoyed it and appreciated it—and I know I'd like to read more by this author!

Content: mild euphemisms; mildly detailed kisses. There's a chapter where (major spoiler) There's also a scene where Kate falls unconscious into the creek and almost dies of hypothermia, and Jacob finds her. Since everyone else in the train is sick or exhausted, and he is wounded and can't carry her far, he takes her to his fire, takes off her dress to hand it up to dry, wraps her in his blanket, and cuddles her to warm her. (She's very upset when she wakes up, but she calms down eventually and no one else seems to hear of it, so no fuss is ever made.)

This story was like a hug. Not the kind of hug you give your friend every time you get together for coffee, but the kind you give to someone after going years without seeing them.
Powerful. Familiar. Achingly sweet. Tearful.

The setting was reminiscent of so many nostalgic stories that I have loved, yet it still took on this fresh feel that is hard to master.

The author clearly did her research on the everyday trials of the Oregon trail providing me with a rich peek into the world of the characters.

Did anyone say characters?

Kate Monroe errrr I mean *McGrath*: a spunky young woman with a mind of her own but a heart of gold.
Kate was definitely “not like other girls” but the author wrote her in a way that I didn’t care too much.
She was still humble and kind, even if she was strong and determined and dare I say stubborn!

Jacob Monroe: A loner who scouts wagon trains out west but longs for a place to call home.
Jacob was instantly likeable though *not* because he was a picture perfect hero. He had flaws, a rough past, and aversion to his Maker—uh-oh
But don’t worry, he changed 😉

There’s another character who needs an honorable mention here, but I think I’ll cry, so I guess you’ll just have to read the book and figure out who I’m talking about…

The only reasons this wasn’t a 5 star for me was:

1: I felt that one of the character’s arcs at the end was rushed.

2: I almost hesitate to criticize this part, since truly this was minor. But I might as well.
The romance was just a tad lacking in some parts. Maybe a little rushed? I don’t know I just wanted more development between them.

3: It was a little *too* wordy. There were a few scenes where I felt like I was choking on the conglomeration of words rather than focusing on the scene itself and the emotions. So I think it could have been more concise and the book could have used a little more cutting out.
Though the author certainly has a gift for prose!

ALL things said…beautiful story, beautiful themes, beautiful characters 🥰
And I will definitely be reading the author’s upcoming books!

3.75 stars, rounded up to 4. ⭐️

This book was a fun and adventurous read, but with some peril and heartbreak also. Overall, the themes of faith and hope in the Lord shone through the whole book, and the redemption of one character was exciting. I especially loved the hymns scattered throughout the story. When I've read books set in this time period before I didn't love them, but Carlson's Instagram posts about this book intrigued me and convinced me to give it a try. I ended up enjoying it a lot and reading it faster than I expected!

The reason my rating isn't higher is because some of the romantic elements were a little too focused on physical attraction and desire for my personal taste, although it did stay no spice.

Content: some semi-detailed kisses, thoughts of wanting to kiss, thoughts of wanting to be held by each other, death, death of an infant, peril, illness, injuries, birth, a man and a woman sleep together in a non-se*ual way (when one of them is too cold and needed extra heat to stay alive), a man attempts to se*ually assault a woman (the beginning of the struggle is described, but he is fought off - nothing graphic at all)

Thank you to Carly L. Carlson for the ARC book to review. All opinions in my review are my own.

I absolutely loved this story! Jacob and Kate both have a hard journey ahead of them, and what a delight it was to get to join them and witness the amazing faith and love that was forged along the way!

I knew I wanted to read this one when I first learned about it around the end of last year, and what a wonderful blessing it has been to be able to follow along in this portion of Carlson's writing and publishing journey, and getting to see glimpses of the final steps required to get this amazing story out into the world and into the hands of readers! Ah, God is good!

I found Kate's struggles to find her place in a world of contractions to be a relatable endeavor, and loved seeing her learn and grow as the story goes on. The difficult journey and at a time when she's blooming into womanhood provide Kate with just the forging grounds she needs to become the woman God has for her, if only she knew. I loved her quick-to-help nature and her desire to see to other's needs first. Her easy friendship and compassionate nature are both an inspiration and a delight to read about, especially in a story where the female is strong, but has no desire to 'dominate' or 'control' the way so many female characters seem to be 'boss-babe' in today's culture. This story offers a refreshing new look that was both Biblical and relatable. A balance of being strong and capable, but also feminine without needing to 'prove' or force others to acknowledge it. We should have to demand affirmation to be. It's possible to be feminine and still be strong, we are called to be 'helpers' and that doesn't mean what many today seem to think. Likewise, to be a man who admits he was wrong, asks for forgiveness, and even cries at times isn't wrong either. (In fact, Jesus cried. I don't think we can really get more 'manly' than God, since He created them, male and female He created them... We should all try to be more like Jesus in our faith and spiritual walk, so this lie that men don't, or can't, feel/have emotion is just as toxic and destructive as the 'divine feminine' mentality.)

I loved that Carlson doesn't take the easy way out, but takes readers along for the long-haul in this one. The story is emotional, it's deep, it's likely challenging at times, but oh it's so worth it! Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down, and I'm so glad I got to read it this month! It was just the story I needed, and everything I'd hoped for and more! The characters, the lessons, the faith and hope born out of the struggles and challenges. All of it! These Wild Dreams of Ours by Carly L. Carlson is a wonderful debut, and one you definitely don't want to miss!

✨ARC Review✨

(But make it almost a month late 🙈)

This book has made me realize that it’s been way too long since I read historical fiction! It was my favorite genre growing up, but it’s been quite some time since I’ve revisited it! It was so nice to return to my comfort genre 🥰

WHAT I LIKED:
~The setting. This book made me want to travel, camp, be outside, and ride horses! Carlson brought me right onto the prairie and up into the mountains, amid dust storms and bright, sunny days. It definitely gave me some Little House flashbacks! And some of the descriptions used, escapist when the setting was involved, were simply beautiful.
~Kate’s “unconventionalness”. Having a FMC who’s “not like other girls” is pretty common these days, which was why Kate was overall refreshing. She wasn’t your typical docile damsel (the girl did like to wear pants, herd cattle, and ride horses after all), but she also desired to be a wife and a mother. I enjoyed that mix in her character.
~Kate’s relationship with her family. I’m a sucker for strong family relationships in fiction, and Kate’s bond with her parents and siblings, especially her father and twin brother, was so sweet. And it made me happy to see Kate’s initially rocky relationship with her mother turn into something special by the end of the story.
~The constant reminder throughout this book that God is good ALL of the time, even in the worst of times. That’s something He’s been reminding me of this past year, and it felt reaffirming to read a book that enforced that truth.

WHAT I WASN’T A FAN OF:
~Kate’s continued self-sacrifice. Now I know that sounds bad, so let me explain. Kate was constantly caring for her family and friends throughout the book, giving up her own comfort to make sure they were all cared for. And that was a beautiful part of her character…except for the fact that it led to her being increasingly burnt out, and in the end it almost cost her everything. This is a character fault, and a really strong one, but my problem was that I didn’t feel that it was fully addressed as such. Kate constantly criticizes herself for feeling tired and burnt out, telling herself that those around her deserve better than her and she can’t be selfish. Near the end of the book her family encourages her to make a decision that will make her happy, not what she feels is right by them, but I still feel like there could have been a deeper revelation of the fact that she needed to care for herself as well as her family.
~Andrew’s character inconsistency. When he was initially introduced, Kate seemed rather uncomfortable around him, and that was followed up promptly by Jacob’s unfavorable first impression of him. He initially seemed rough and unkind (from Jacob’s perspective), but then Kate’s family was singing his praises, and Kate was agreeing with them. It was repeatedly mentioned that he was a kind, God-loving man who would make a good husband. I thought that he would end up showing himself to be two-faced to Kate, but he just ended up feeling rather inconsistent to me.

SPOILER ALERT/CONTENT WARNING
~I had some issues with the sexual assault scene. Maybe it was just me, but this scene felt a little pointless. And because this scene was tackling such an intense thing, that bothered me. I felt like it was only meant to give Jacob a hero moment, and while I love a strong man coming to the rescue, I would have liked to see this scene have a real impact on the rest of the story (especially because it happened only around 40% through the book). It also gave Kate a chance to preach to Jacob about forgiveness, but that ended up feeling shallow. There are some mentions throughout the rest of the book of Kate having some PTSD and flashbacks after the experience, and Jacob has some lingering anger over what nearly happened to her, but other than that nothing really came of it. I felt like the weight of the action was disregarded; no redemption came from this moment. In the end, I feel like it was more harmful than anything else. Content wise, this scene wasn’t graphic. The man grabs at Kate, kisses her forcefully, pulls at her skirt, and starts to remove his belt before she escapes.

FINAL THOUGHTSt:
~I would love to have a sequel and be able to see where God leads our hero and heroine, and to see a matured Jacob and Kate with a family. Thank you for the ARC, Carly!

If you are like me and sometimes have a hankerin’ for a good ol’ pioneer/western story of loss, love, and endurance, where faith is tested and even found, then have I got a recommendation for you, friends.

For months now, Carly L Carlson has been creating beautiful and intriguing posts about her debut novel, These Wild Dreams of Ours. I was immediately hooked when I discovered it was faith based. I’ve always been drawn to stories that showcase the sheer determination and fortitude displayed by the settlers to the western frontier. Their journeys are harrowing, and most times gut wrenching. And this book fits the bill in every way.

We follow Kate McGrath and her family as they trek across the great wide open into the expanse of the wilds of America. Fraught with disease, death, fear of Indians, and fickle Mother Nature, even the strongest are pushed to their breaking point. And Kate, she is among the strongest. In her will, and in her faith. It’s that faith that carries her through.

Kate endures heart ache after heart ache, yet her faith never wavers. It’s that faith that she prays will help an unbeliever like Jacob to see that God is good all the time. Even in the midst of trials and tribulations.

Kate must lean on God when her life seems to take an unexpected turn. Searching for His will and not her own. Trusting that He will provide her heart’s desires.

Many thanks to the author for my advanced copy. All opinions are my own. This book will be available tomorrow!!

Outstanding debut! As soon as I saw Ms. Carlson's book trailer, I knew I needed to read this novel.

The author's prose masterfully weaves vivid imagery that appeals to the senses as she draws her readers into the story of a young woman traveling with her family in a wagon train bound west in 1859. It is a realistic blend of highs and lows of the trail. That of the dreams for adventure and a better life envisioned by all as well as the many hardships they faced.

Kate is a strong young woman, full of grit, yet tender of heart. Her faith gives her strength amidst the hardships and loss. She is the symbol of the women that helped to civilize the untamed wonders of the West.

Jacob is a man's man. Able to tame the west, yet finds he craves the love and stability of a home. Something he never experienced. HIs journey of faith is compelling.

I found this story to be expertly plotted, full of adventure with a gently unfolding romance. Carlson writes with a richness of heart that is endearing, one that will captivate her readers from the first to the last page.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one! The journey on the Oregon Trail full of beauty and heartache was so well written. I felt myself transported there.

I enjoyed the Christian themes throughout and how Kate and Jacob had to grow individually in their faith and character. I ended the book with a big smile on my face!

Thank you to the author for the ARC!

I enjoyed the Oregon Trail and early settler atmosphere. The little snatches of hymns were cool too. I enjoyed feeling like I was hearing these songs in their older setting. I especially enjoyed the relationships and the character arcs. Without giving anything away, the last third of the book was my favorite. I really enjoyed the events that were described there, but the whole book had tension, rising stakes, adventure, fortitude, and grit.

Jacob + Kate

I loved this book! It was full of adventure & adversity. Kate carries a lot and is always helping others but when will it be her turn to be taken care of? Jacob doesn’t feel worthy of anything good.
The journey on the Oregon trail will have you feeling every emotion.
The faith themes throughout were so good and the timing of everything was perfect. There is so much wrapped up in this one & I’m so happy I read it! Carly did an amazing job on this one!

Favorite quotes -
A longing sprang up in Jacob, sharp and strong, a yearning to belong, to know and be known, to have someone by his side through all that life would throw at him.

“Maybe, when you come to the end of yourself, you’ll realize that havin’ nothin’ is better than havin’ everythin’, if it means you turn to the Lord.”

Kate didn’t think she had any more tears inside her, but at his soft words, she collapsed into his arms and cried again, this time in blessed relief, weights that she didn’t know she’d been carrying dropping like broken millstones from around her neck.

Content -
Attempted assault on page. Not graphic
Death
Grief
Illness
Kissing only
No foul language

When I was given These Wild Dreams of Ours, as an ARC reader in exchange for an honest review, I expected a simple romance set in a stereotypical western setting. Something that has been written a thousand times.

I was so wrong.

It's not often that an author can take you on such a vivid journey as Carly Carlson has done here. I cried, I laughed, my heart broke, and was sewn back together. The descriptions activate your senses and plop you right on a wagon seat surrounded by cowboys, cows, and the dusty trail mingled with the laughter and tears of those seeking a better life in the west. The characters are real to life and relatable on so many levels. The faith aspect is probably my favorite. It isn't shallow but deep, raw, and real.

I love historical fiction, but especially historical fiction that really allows you to the experience the era. This book will take you on a journey you won't soon forget.

Wow, wow, wow! What an incredible story!

Let me start by saying I have been in my Westward Expansion obsession era, after covering it extensively this last year while homeschooling my children and realizing how little I actually know about what these brave pioneers experienced. I was so excited when I found Carly's IG account and saw her discussing her upcoming novel, set in the same time period as my current obsession...and even more excited when I was chosen to be on her ARC team.

I just finished this book and was blown away by so many things. I felt the historical information was accurate and very well-researched. For example, the routes taken, the descriptions of the wagons/animals, clothing, the weather, the illnesses, the food eaten, the forts, landmarks, etc. all felt very authentic. I also felt like Kate's faith and inner dialogue was so genuine and I could relate to so many of her thoughts and prayers! It was very refreshing to read about such a wonderful woman and feel like I could so easily connect with her character, despite living in different centuries. I loved the relationships within the McGrath family and others in the wagon train as well. The romantic elements were done so well and I could really resonate with Kate and some of the difficult decisions she faced in light of both her faith and her sense of obligation to her family. My heart ached right alongside hers!

I appreciated the dual POV and thought Carly wrote it so well. I really felt like I understood both main characters and was very invested in each of their stories. There were a lot of hard things that happened throughout the story, which I'm sure was very realistic, and led to many tears on my end. In fact, I'm pretty sure I didn't stop crying for the last 1/4 of the book haha! Carly wrote each of these trials with care and purpose, all pointing to the most important thing: God. Sometimes, Christian fiction can feel cheesy or oversimplified. I did not feel that was the case in this book at all. Carly took on big themes, including suffering and trials, God's sovereignty, and living to bring glory and honor to God.

Through beautiful and vivid descriptions, authentic inner dialogue and struggles from two POVs, and themes such as faith, love, family, and adventure, Carly has woven together a stunning tapestry that ultimately brings all the glory to God.

In conclusion, I LOVED this book and can't wait to recommend it to my friends! It was my first time reading fiction set in this time period and I loved the beautiful story Carly weaved together. I will absolutely read anything else she writes in the future!

Wheeeww! Warning: spoilers.
First off: I LOVED These Wild Dreams of Ours. It is one of the best Oregon Trail stories I’ve read (and I’ve read some good ones). Carly did a fantastic job with this story! I can hardly believe it’s a debut.

Scouts? Troubled pasts? Trail life? I was hooked already, but did she leave it there? Nope. Let’s sprinkle in a girl with a dash of misfit mischief, twins (I’m like a moth to flame for that), an Irish accent, some fiddling, a mentor, and *cherry on top* a wolf pet?!

Took me longer to read than usual, but everything took longer this last month. 😂 It was a bit slow to get into. Not in a boring way, just . . . slow.
Once I adjusted to the pace I got through it at a pretty steady clip.
Hmm . . , steady. That describes it well. Steady pacing, steady characters. Reliable characters, not entirely predictable. There were a few curveballs even I didn’t see coming.
There is a degree of wildness in the MCs, as per the title, but it’s more of a constant than it is chaos. Hence I say “steady.”

The love triangle was really well done. I don’t say that about love triangles often, but this one made the cut. I kind of wanted enemies to brothers with that, but *sigh* the ending was satisfying . . .
I still want a sequel, though.

As per my usual, I wanted more of the side characters in general. What’s Obadiah’s story? What happens next for Maria and James? Why is Proctor how he is? And Ian . . . What about Ian? So many unresolved questions. This is what happens when an author makes even the side characters feel real . . . 😂

I held out hope for Dantés till the very last page. 😫

Faith elements were very well integrated, sweet, and meaningful. A little slow; I was holding my breath thinking Jacob’s arc would be rushed by the end, but it wasn’t.

The research was on point. 👌 The setting descriptions were beautiful and vivid, trail life was realistic without being overly focused on either the hardships or thrill alone.

I’ll definitely be getting a hard copy . . . And my Grandma will probably be getting one as a late Mother’s Day gift.

Content warnings:
It’s a clean romance, no spice, a few kisses. A birth is described in relative detail but not too graphically (though could be my past midwifery study makes it stand out less to me); intimacy referenced by implication in conversation a couple times; a near-r*pe happens at one point, but it’s not overly traumatic/is minimally descriptive (not graphic) and not dwelt on for long.
Death, grief, sickness, some violence (fisticuffs level, not too graphic).
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I give this 4 1/2 Stars!

I want to start by saying I received an ARC of this book. This is a Christian historical romance book. The main characters are Jacob and Kate. Jacob is looking for a wagon train while Kate and her family are part of one. When Jacob meets Kate he is drawn to her. He sees how her and her family are at peace even will all of the hard things they have experienced on the journey. Could he have that same peace? Can he finally settle down? When they face hardships along the way will they be able to make it through? I love how Kate had faith in God no matter how many hard things she went through. I know I would probably have a hard time and it’s understandable by Jacob had a hard time and felt the way he did. I love how historical this book truly was and how they were looking for a new start. I loved watching them fall in love and overcome hardships together. I love how Kate was there for Jacob and how he was there for her. I loved watching Jacob grow in his faith and realize God is there for him. I loved Jacob! He just wanted a place to settle down and to have a family but he was struggling to find that. He saw what a true family was like when he met Kate and her family. I loved Kate’s family. I enjoyed the side characters in this book. When I read historical books they usually have a home and aren’t traveling like this so this was a change and I loved it. I loved all of the Christian aspects in this book. No matter how hard things get God is there He will never leave you. Pray and give it all to God. God as a plan for your life. I myself grew up watching old shows and still to this day watch them so I was very excited to read this book. There are a few things in this book that some people may not like which are attempted r*pe but it gets stopped, childbirth, death, sickness, and injuries. I will be honest from the historical shows I have seen I wasn’t surprised with most of it as times where different back then and being on a trail in a wagon they didn’t have the luxuries like we do know. It truly makes me thankful and blessed for what I have. If you like Christian historical books with hardships, faith in God, and an amazing family then I think you will love this. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see what she writes next.

Kate McGrath is suffocating under the expectations of others, especially her mother. She's not like other women, wild and longing for the freedom to be herself. Aching to be seen and loved fully as she is, she buries her dreams, following her family westward. But the journey will test everything she has. Only the strong survive the challenges the West brings--could her strength and unconventional skills ever be an asset, especially to a husband?

Jacob Monroe's nomadic life is beginning to take a toll. Craving the opportunity to settle down and seek a normal life, he joins a wagon train once again, working as a scout. There he meets Kate, who is unlike any woman he's ever encountered. Strong, determined, and skilled at all the things men ought to do, she can't help but draw his attention. But how could she ever want someone the likes of him, especially when a long time friend has clear designs on seeking her hand?

But the trail and its hardships bring them together, forcing them to work as a team to save those they care about--a team that's undeniably made to fit together. Yet more than the trail stands in their way, insurmountable obstacles that make a love like theirs impossible. How can something that feels so right be so far out of reach?

This debut novel was absolutely beautiful! Carly wove a tale of love and loss and faith, seamlessly painting the historical context that was essential to her characters' journeys. And I was carried along for all of it. I was so, so impressed by this story and by the masterful writing. The characters lingered in my mind for days after I closed the book for the last time--always the hallmark of an excellent story!

I was given an advance reader copy of this story in exchange for my review. All opinions and enjoyment of the story are my own!

This book!! I could not put it down. The Oregon trail plot is engaging. The writing is seriously wonderful: so lyrical, so transporting. It's beautiful and heartbreaking. There is strong (albeit heavy-handed) Christian messaging, but for the most part, it does not just make following God seem easy amid the hardships of life. I appreciated that nuance. I also liked all of the characters, except for one truly evil one.

Still, this wasn't a five star read for me for a few reasons. One character's major spiritual conversion felt rushed and under-developed to me; I would have liked a few more chapters. Additionally, it may seem like a mild annoyance, but it was over-emphasized that Kate's "not like the other girls." That's stated in the text so. many. times even though I'm sure many gals on the frontier had to be tough-as-nails to survive, and we don't have to disparage other women for one female character to seem strong.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, even though a couple of aspects didn't sit right with me. This is an incredibly powerful and moving story, and I will definitely be on the lookout for more from Carly L. Carlson in the future. I recommend this book to others who enjoy Christian historical romance and are able to read some darker events (see content notes).

Thank you to Carly Carlson for having me on your review team and giving me a complimentary advanced reader copy. I post this review with my honest opinions. This review will be posted on Amazon and Instagram within one week of the book's publication date.

Content notes: peril, injury, illness, and death, including death of a child; non-descriptive kissing; a man and woman sleep together in a non-se*ual way; childbirth; attempted se*ual a$$ault

For me to truly love a book it needs to make me feel something. This book transported me back in time to the Oregon trail. I felt the dreams and excitement of the travelers as they start their journey. I felt the heartbreak as they faced trials along the way. I felt the longing as characters are separated. I felt the joy as lives are transformed and broken hearts are mended. Carly does an amazing job of drawing the reader right along side the characters for every moment. I truly felt like I was there.

I also love the characters journey of faith. I feel we, like each of the main characters, often fall into one of two categories of faith. Our faith is our strength and guide in all circumstances or we face hardships and lose our faith and feel God isn't there. It was beautiful to see all the ways God worked to bring the right people and experiences to the characters to help strengthen and reestablish their faith.

I look forward to reading more from Carly!

I received a complementary copy of the book from the Author. All opinions are my own.

This. Book. If you follow me you know I have spent the last several months anticipating, salivating over, and hyping up this book. At this point I honestly don't know what words are left that could fully do justice to this incredible story.
From the moment I found out about it, I knew I HAD to read These Wild Dreams of Ours. I grew up reading westerns and dreaming of the Oregon trail. Reading this book was like watching those dreams come to life before my eyes.
Kate McGrath is the heroine I've searched for in every story I've ever read. Her strength and unwavering faith in the face of trial after tragedy is truly inspiring. While many other authors would have written a FMC who "follows her heart" and does what "makes her happy" ; Carly Carlson gives us a girl who sticks to her principles, does what she knows is right, and trusts the Lord to direct her path.
All that said, our main characters are not paragons of perfection. Their true beauty is that they are, after all, only human. It's impossible not to love Jacob Munroe from the very beginning, but when we first meet him he is completely lost and without God. His journey to redemption is long and hard fought; but in the end, God was always right there waiting.
Carly Carlson truly knocks it out of the park with this incredible story. There is romance, faith, tears, and ultimately triumph. As with any good book, it was over too soon. The McGrath family holds a special place in my heart and I could read a whole series of their character's adventures😁
Thank you @carlylcarlson.author for listening to the Lord in writing These Wild Dreams of Ours and for the incredible opportunity of reading it💕

I loved it! The author beautifully captures the essence of a journey filled with challenges and triumphs, interwoven with Christian themes and the importance of family. The narrative follows a brave family embarking on the historic Oregon trail, facing the trials of the wilderness while holding onto their faith and love for one another. Romance blossoms along the trail, adding depth to the story as characters navigate their relationship amidst the backdrop of adventure. The theme of rescue is interwoven throughout the book, not just in the physical sense but also in the emotional and spiritual support they provide each other, emphasizing the power of community and faith in overcoming adversity. This book is a heartwarming reminder of the importance of God's faithfulness towards us, perseverance in bleak times, and the bonds that hold families together in the face of life's challenges. But don't take my word for it and preorder a copy today!

🐴 These Wild Dreams of Ours🐴

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟✨

“It’s like one of those mountain mustangs. Good luck trying to tame it.”

Can we get a round of applause for Carly L. Carlson?!? Because excuse me ma’am but that knocked my boots off!!!
Her descriptions made me feel like I was on the trail with this family. I could see it all perfectly! Beautiful. & the way she seamlessly wove Jesus into the story took my breath away

Kate is strong & sure. She’s pushing boundaries & extending grace. She can do it all & we love her for it.

Jacob is strong & not so sure. Bless that boy. But he shows how Jesus can wrestle with the best of them.

I am ever so thankful to be a part of the ARC team for this book. These opinions are all my own & I will sing the praises of this book from the mountain tops. I sobbed, I laughed, I smiled & I thanked God for how good he is. Carly you are SO talented! I admire you for using your beautiful gift for His glory. Never forget.

Over sweeping prairies and through raging rivers, we follow a young woman and her family on their journey west.
Kate’s story is one of unwavering strength and trust. I love how closely she follows Christ, and how she exemplifies this in her care for her family.
Jacob’s story is one of healing and faith, as he learns to release his hold on the pain of his past and embrace the hope of his future.
Wrought with adventure, danger, and most importantly, love, These Wild Dreams of Ours is everything the title suggests and more! Carly L Carlson broke my heart in two, and put it back together with this one. If you’re looking for a wholesome, faith-filled read with Yellowstones ‘1883’ type setting, this book is for you!

I don't usually read romances, but when one is handed a free book, one must read! I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this book and this indie writer, especially for a debut book. She didn't make any of my early mistakes but took care to turn out a first-class tale that shines, from the excellent story to the lovely cover. I find most romances to be be formulaic and boring, but Carly's book is refreshingly different. Not the usual enemies-to-lovers scenario. It's not overly sugar-sweet, faith-affirming but not preachy, and I actually really liked the female lead character. It ended a little abruptly to my mind, but that's probably just my taste; I wanted to see what would happen next. Very well done!

Easily my top fiction recommendation! If you’re looking for historical fiction that will lift your spirits and encourage you in your faith, then you’ve found the right novel! I am not a huge romance reader and it would be a disservice to categorize this novel as that. It is so much MORE!
Carly L. Carlson evokes emotion, imagination, and has created characters that feel SO real. Her leading lady, Kate McGrath, showcases perseverance in the face of suffering throughout the novel in a way that’s truly inspiring.

There’s a lot of “christian romance” novels out there that I won’t let my daughter read when the time comes. But she will definitely be reading “These Wild Dreams Of Ours”.

I bought this on a whim, and read it in a day.
I saw promotions on the author's IG account, and was intrigued at the premise. I read the sample, and was hooked by the contrasting aspects to Kate's character from page one. She's wild, yet vulnerable. I wanted to keep reading to see what happened, and it was more than I could've imagined.
This book brought so many emotions to the surface.
I sobbed, I laughed, I wanted to cheer at the ending.

What a stunning debut. You knocked it out of the park.

Trigger warnings: SA attempt, child loss.

Carlson wrote a brilliant period piece full of the Spirit! While it deal with some serious, realistic, and difficult themes (Trigger warning for sexual assault), the overarching faith and hope was a powerful reminder of goodness and God in this fallen world.

Jacob was such a darling male lead. His heart and tranformation were believable and relatable. Kate was a strong heroine.

I loved this western period romance.

TWDOO is so good! It draws you into the mid-1800s pioneer life and holds your attention throughout the story. I loved the characters, and it really felt like you were right there with them as they go through the story. Though it is a Christian read, there are some darker themes, so it is 14+ age range. Highly recommend for if you love reading anything western or historical fiction!

This story broke my heart at times, but I loved how everything worked out in the end. I love Kate and how strong she is in her faith. I also love Jacob and how much he cares about those around him. This was a beautifully told story that I’m glad I had the chance to read!

This book was a delightfully engaging trip to the wagon trains of the west. Following a sweet and feisty heroine and a strong and masculine hero this story does not disappoint in both romance and also strong Christian content. Salvation, loss, and love are covered in this beautiful story and I highly recommend it!
