A PRIVATE GLIMPSE BEHIND THE SCENES!

Benjamin Dane’s concise handbook, Secrets Of An Actor, will attract three categories of readers. Careerists, Creatives, and the Curious will all find value in this compact compendium of confidential counsel. Despite that alliterative abuse, the observation holds. Writers know that the perceptiveness of their readers provides value to the writing. The depth of a reader’s perspective often determines their recognition of the depth offered by the author. Any author is well-advised to assume their reader’s high intelligence. Benjamin Dane honors this prescriptive with brief suggestions for those actors seeking to nail their auditions. He does not belabor or exhaust his points. While presuming working actors will “get” them immediately, he doesn’t assume they will always think of them alone.

Careerists will discover an abbreviated gem to guide their audition preparations. Creatives will recognize the applicability of these guidelines to their own endeavors — the need for context, attention to detail, coherence, cohesion, and investigative investment in learning about their subjects. The curious will thoroughly enjoy watching what an actor goes through simply preparing for a short audition, not to mention a full-fledged cinematic or theatrical role. Of course, all three categories will love the secret tips offered later in the book. Nothing is quite as fun as getting a secret glimpse behind the scenes. That’s true for careerists, creatives, and the curious. All three should take to heart this candid, concluding admonition :

“[K]now it is not the work you have invested that loses the role … with every audition, you are honing your skills.”

Characterisation

The closest thing I did to acting growing up was in year 12 auditioning with a friend and getting a part in the school play. This was an independent bs script and I have zero experience receiving a part that had way to many lines to remember and I wasn't keen on performing. This book reminded me of that time. I later changed to a smaller role and someone who was 19 returned to perform in the school play. I may not be an actor though for writing characters there are a lot of things I learned in Bruce Campbells books and yet this explained acting in the simplest way. Furthermore, developing characters as what is explained in this book is why I do enjoy deeper character arcs. Perhaps I will not just watch the little theatre or movies but actually take a chance to act in a play and see how this experience can develop my understanding to write more complex and interesting characters. A fantastic book I felt quite helpful.

Loved the insights

Okay, so I’m an author, not an actor. But I have a friend who is both, and I’ve come to realize that I can learn a lot from learning more about an actor’s perspective. They interpret characters… I write characters.

I also shoot videos and memorization is always a challenge for me! I adapted one technique (from dog training, called back-chaining… which is you learn the last behavior or paragraph, then go back another step and add that.) That has helped me in the same way it helps dogs… you start with the least familiar, and each step gets progressively easier because you’ve worked on it more. So then you just have to focus on the start.

But clearly, the author’s method has a lot more experience and results behind it! Plus I’m sure he’s used it for much longer scripts than my videos. Thanks for sharing!

A Multi-point perspective!
I love this! Wasn’t sure how you could get to the Ultimate Hack to refine an audition scene, but Benjamin Dane does it. It is quite methodical and objective, but with much attention to the small details that add up to a stellar delivery.
Plenty of advice on self-taping from eyelines to framing to what to do and not do with your hands. Very thorough for such a short book.
Secrets of an Actor will definitely build confidence; you’ll more easily go, and stay, off book!

Practical tips for Actors Desiring to Hone their Craft

I am blessed to know several amazing actors who will benefit from Benjamin’s practical skills that he has learned over the course of his career.

As a writer, I found his descriptions of connecting with the character from the author’s point of view to be inspiring and helpful in my own character creation.

I highly recommend this book for any actor desiring to hone their craft and for any writer desiring to connect with those who personify the characters they know and love.

Short and useful guide

This is a short and useful guide to one of the most important things an actor needs to know, how to prepare for an audition. It includes everything from how to develop the character, how to learn lines and how to self tape. Also practical advice and encouragement for dealing with multiple reflections which are an inevitable part of the business. Recommended for actors auditioning for film roles.

interesting short read

I got this short book for my daughter who is auditioning for a play. This book has specific tips for auditioning for professional movie and television roles. It has some general tips but also tips on how to prepare using a written script or how to video record and audition.

Short but Helpful Book

I am preparing for a role as an amateur actor and I found multiple great tips that have helped me thus far. Do I think it is a complete guide to all the tips and tricks, no. But it's a great start.

7 times better than similar books

This is a powerful and straightforward book. I liked Benjamin Dane’s use of the number 7 throughout the book. It’s easy to grab instructions when they are easy to pick up. Recommend this book to any aspiring actors
