AFTERWARD
I like dreaming of the past.
Meeting people I’ll never meet again, my childhood self talking to my mother or father...
Then when I wake up I feel sad.
Does that sadness stem from having lost those things?
Or is it because I’ve remembered that I’d forgotten even the things I’d lost...?
Humans long for things to stay the same, for eternity, but on the other hand I think that the act of forgetting heals us.

-Meet an AI that runs an elevator, who is technically immortal and asks two little girls to help it commit suicide.
"Travelers and gods are alike in that they both exist in a space unfettered by the interests of society. Makes you want to pray, I was a failed god. Goodbye."
-Flashback to the girls escaping the village under siege, their grandfather telling them they'd be able to survive for longer on a small amount of food. As they drive away there's the echo of a single gunshot.

This is a review for the manga as a whole and not this individual volume, so it will probably be somewhat spoilerish.
The anime for this manga had been on my radar for some time. I knew very little about it, other than it was usually compared to Kino's Journey which I enjoyed. I think I watched the entire anime within a forty-eight-hour period of starting it, and I immediately knew I had to read the manga to find out more.
So, I had already read the manga a couple times in unofficial translations by this point, so this isn't exactly my first read. I've had plenty of time to process my feelings towards this story, and there was really an extraordinary amount to process.
The first thing most people I know who have either seen the anime or read the manga say is it's very depressing. I'll be honest, just looking at the basic plot makes it seem like a horrifically sad and hopeless tale. Yet, I never was hit by any pity for these two girls in this hopeless situation. If anything, I envied them.
They were born into a dying and nearly dead world, in a collapsed society built in the ruins of an older collapsed society. They seem to have been separately taken in by an older man after something conceivably happened to their separate sets of parents. That was the only family/parental figure they can remember. They lose him at a very young age and are forced into the world to fend for themselves.
They are almost entirely ignorant of humanity, history, morality, and basically anything that we humans take for granted from our social constructs. So, they experience the remnants of this long dead world from an entirely fresh perspective, and it's so well executed to make it breathtaking. I was in constant awe of how effortlessly thought provoking it was. Heavy concepts were given fresh perspective from the eyes of these two unbiased observers. War, death, life, the afterlife, art, music, literature, and that's only the first ones to come to mind.
They have one simple purpose, and that's to find their way to the highest level of the multilayered ruins, hoping there's something up there. Yet, the journey comes to mean more to them than the destination. All the experiences they share together on their trek make their lives worthwhile, as unfair as their lives seem. Despite having only each other for almost the entirety of the story, they always had each other. Both of them had one ever faithful and unshakable companion to help them navigate through life.
I guess that's why I'm envious of them. The simplicity of their existence, coupled with having a person they loved deeply to get through it with, sounds nice. I suppose that's odd to say about two young girls forced to scrounge for every bit of food and water they can find, but the author herself mentioned feeling envious of them in the afterword. I guess I'm not alone, and that's one of the feelings these manga volumes gave me. I felt that as long as this story existed, and there was an author out there who could invoke these kinds of emotions in me, I'd never be alone.
There are so many powerfully emotional scenes that it's hard to even begin going into the finer details of the plot, so I'm not going to do that. I just want to say that I'm not sure if a work of fiction has ever moved me like this. Even the artwork, which I don't have much of an eye for, constantly made me want to sit and appreciate it. Every time I read this, I'm filled with a sense that everything will be okay, in the end, and that life, for all its hardships, is very much worth living.

Continuing to enjoy the evocative art and storytelling in this manga. The AI that shows up toward the end of this volume has a mild deus ex machina feeling to it as it . But I can understand this approach to a decision or inflection point, where our series either goes on in peripatetic fashion indefinitely, or comes to a conclusion in a few volumes.

Chito and Yuu continue to travel to the topmost level of the territory around them.
This is another good volume - very low-key but it talks softly about huge things. Chito and Yuu find an abandoned museum and think about art. Chito is injured and Yuu must step up and drive. They remember the beginning of their voyage.
There's only one more volume in this series and I'm anxious. I don't see how this can have a happy ending, but I hope they at least get a good one.

I wanna hold off on reading the last volume because I love it so much and I don’t want it to end but also…it’s just so good and I wanna keep reading to see how it ends. I will definitely be rereading this in the winter time, I feel like this is meant to be read then.

The world has been destroyed by a nuclear holocaust. Chito and Yuuri are two of the only people left alive. They’re both just little girls with no understanding of how the world was built and very little knowledge about history or humanity as a whole. They wander through one barren and lifeless wasteland after another in search of food and shelter, studying the sights they see in an attempt to learn more about the dystopian world they live in and draw connections to the lost civilizations of the past.
Though there’s an obvious melancholy atmosphere which is hard to avoid since 99.9% of life on the planet has been completely eradicated, the actual tone of the story is actually quite relaxing and innocent. That’s because it’s an apocalypse story written from the perspective of two girls that are too young to have had any attachment to the old world to begin with. There’s no sense of great loss or despair. This is simply just the life they’ve always known and they have no trouble adapting to their surroundings or enjoying themselves.
It’s interesting to have an apocalypse story filled with a ghibli-esque sense of childlike wonder and innocence. I enjoyed reading it just for the peacefully melancholy atmosphere. That being said, I don’t think the characters were as well developed as they could’ve been and sometimes the deeper themes and commentary of the story fell short. It’s not as great as it had the potential to be, but it’s still an interesting and unique take on the dystopian apocalypse genre.

Meravella de sèrie. Em pensava que estava tot el manga adaptat a l'anime, però pel que es veu està a meitant, així que ara toca llegir el manga per veure com continua (i acaba).
Confesso que m'ha costat una mica al començar a llegir-lo (estant acostumada a a l'anime), perquè el dibuix és bastant sketchy i tal, però en res m'hi he acostumat i la veritat és que m'encanta l'estil de dibuix.
Cosetes a comentar a aquest tomo:
M'ha fet molta pena la IA holograma :( Però vivint sola a un món on saps que ja no tens cap propòsit i no tornaràs a veure mai més a ningú, entenc que volgués deixar d'existir.
Sento que segons la Yuu i la Chi van avançant, tot el que deixen enrere està destinat a finalment "morir" del tot, cosa que em fa molta pena, però és el principal encant de la història :(
Ara a seguir llegint, però tinc molta temor del que els hi pugui passar a les protagonistes perquè, com diu el títol "Girls' last tour", segurament també arribin al seu final :'(

Questo ha fatto male. Il viaggio di Chito e Yuri si mescola con una strana presenza che alimenta ricordi dal passato. Ma cosa significa ricordare? Fa bene farlo? Questa è la domanda principale che si pone il volume, non dando ovviamente una risposta definitiva, come del resto il manga ha mai fatto, ma lasciandoci riflettere insieme alle protagoniste, di cui qui scopriamo anche il passato. I disegni sono molto belli, ma a volte mi risulta ancora difficile capire cosa sto vedendo. In ogni caso manca solo un volume alla conclusione e sono curioso di vedere come finirà il tutto.

Such a sad story, yet so engrossing...
It seems that as long as the girls have each other, they're ok. Onward & upward! So much abandoned stuff. So many abandoned places. So many things to explore. I hope this story ends with the girls finding a new, safe home along with loving people. Art, has a rough draft feel, but it's fitting to the story. Dialogue, morose at times, but interesting. Characters, likeable & admirable.

I really like the sketchy style this series has. Whereas robots and machines are boxy and straight, here they are a lot more loose. The chapters, as always, bring up interesting ideas about life and death. I’m wondering how it’s going to end. Given the tone, I feel like we’re in a neutral ending. I wonder if they are going to kill off one of them tho. Either way, very fun to follow their journey, seeing what they find and think. The map at the end is nice to have.

Те, як цій історії вдається говорити про складне так невимушено мене вражає по прочитані кожного тому. Це ще більше відгукується у сучасних українських реаліях, де ми всі так само інтегрували екзистенційні теми у щоденну рутину. Глибоко, сумно і правдиво, без зайвої патетичності чи дидактичності. Обовʼязкове до прочитання!

I really love this manga series. It's quirky, philosophical, and tinged with sadness. The glimpses of the girls' past are harrowing. Sigh, I can't believe there's only one more volume.

I find it interesting that this volume focuses a little more on the past. The art that the people of old made, how they survived, and a chapter on Chito and Yuuri's hometown.
I think the end is near for humanity. I mean, it's been three volumes since we've seen another human.
