And just like that I got sucked into a new fantasy world 🙌🏽
Rise of the Phoenix follows Will Tavner who thought he was just a normal boy living a quiet life. He soon discovers that he is anything but normal and is the key to restoring peace to the kingdom of Arulean.
I can’t say much more because a lot happens from page one and don’t want to spoil it! I’ve been so over fantasy novels that I wasn’t sure if I had energy for a new world but boy was I wrong! Rise of the Phoenix hooked me from the beginning and didn’t let me go! It was fast paced but at the same time still slowed down when needed to. It was never overwhelming!
Brendan builds a new world with a rich history but was not too much either. He laid the history down in a cool way which isn’t too telly and tbh it screams prequel at you! But it’s not just the amazing lore and it’s the amazing characters too! Will is a great main character in every possible way, with his best friends Seb and Alyise forming a “Golden Trio.” They each have their own storylines that had me so invested! I can’t tell you which character is my favourite *cough*Will*cough*Seb cough*! I can’t go into much detail either because of spoilers! Spoilers for each individual character too!
Also points go the slow burn romance 😏🔥 even if it wasn’t the romance I wanted, I really got on board with it, I’m always down for a straight romance and in this book…i loooooooove the main romance! Even if I am shipping a fake ship in my head jejeje I am so on board and shipping so many ships! but extra points to a gay storyline too and the gay romance!
The “Golden Trio” weren’t the only characters that stood out, the supporting cast is 👌🏽 Looking at you Prince Andayne 🫠 and the villainous Queen Raveena was just slaying! Also, points to her minion Jarrack who needs for time in the sequel! Those two could be a powerful force! Who doesn’t love to hate the villain!
It’s not just the characters but it’s the plot twists too! My mouth dropped so many times! And those final chapters were a rollercoaster! I mean the whole book was a ride! And that cliffhanger! Pleaseeee give me book 2 right now! A pure gem hidden within the fantasy genre that the world is sleeping on and I can’t wait to see where Brendan takes this series!

Rise of the Phoenix was a great book! The story Brendan Arnold has written is fantastic. The world building was vibrant, the magic was really unique and interesting, and the characters were wonderfully written! This is exactly the kind of fantasy storytelling that I love. As an added bonus, one of the main characters is gay! Which always feels too rare in fantasy novels! I’m already obsessed with him and can’t wait to see where his story goes. And after that cliffhanger, I’m super excited for more of this series!!

There are inheritance revelations, slow burn romance, and tense battles. All the good stuff wrapped up in a tight, 275-ish pages!
Marking the start of what is looking to be an explosive fantasy series, I'm eager to see where Arnold takes us next.

Rise of the Phoenix by Brendan Arnold is a book I’ve been wanting to read for so long, and it just never worked out. I’m a firm believer at everything happens and the right time and being in my fantasy era lately, well I knew it was time. I don’t really want to say much because what I loved about the story is that it slowly unravels and lets you into its secrets, so it’s best for you to read this knowing very little to get the full experience.
Will, Seb, and Aylise have grown up together and are the best of friends. Their families are there for each other, share a strong connection, and must protect a secret that will change everything…at all costs.
When mysterious symbols appear on Will, the friends begin a journey that sets tremendous things into motion. They’ll encounter various obstacles, including, guards, magic and the true epitome of a villainess.
I love the world Brendan has created; there’s so much detail I felt like I was there and experiencing the journey our trio was on. I’m really big on connecting with the characters, and I found them all relatable. I genuinely cared for them and had so many emotions ranging from joy to heartache. The pacing and writing style are phenomenal, and this was such a page turner for me. I stayed up well past my bedtime to read (and finish) this book.
If you’re looking for an amazing story filled with so much heart, trust, secrets, and magic, then I highly recommend you move this up your TBR list. I’ll just say that the way this book ended literally made me gasp, and I immediately went to Brendan’s DMs and asked for book 2. (Don’t keep me waiting too long Brendan!)

Brendan's style of writing is engaging and beautifully easy to read. The themes and tones he pulls from the different POV is complex and well balanced, and you feel the shift in voices between characters so each one is unique. The world building is also full and intricate and you could see each scene clearly, which as a reader is something special.
Honestly - this book is everything you'll want from a fantasy action-adventure, coming of age story.
Will is a normal 18 year old, living with his over protective parents, learning a trade and hanging out with his two best friends Seb and Ayline, a noblemans daughter who he's loved forever. He longs for more than his sheltered humdrum life, having never explored further than his village boundaries. One night around a campfire with his two best friends, an accident sets off a catalyst that will change the course of his entire life, and the people around him.
What follows is an adventure where death, destruction, fleeing the enemy and finding your path (albeit reluctantly) becomes a reality.
This is a book you'll just have to experience first hand so you can feel all the feelings, it's not your average YA.

Rise of the Phoenix by Brendon Arnold is an epic fantasy adventure that had me hooked from the very first chapter! Written in third person, the story follows Will Tavern, a reluctant hero thrust into a journey he never wanted to take. Along the way, he faces tragedy, uncovers hidden truths about himself, and discovers a strength and courage he didn’t know he possessed. And maybe… even love. ❤️🔥
Will’s path is full of action, heartache, and emotional growth. The pacing is fast, the worldbuilding vivid, and the twists kept me completely invested. This was my first fantasy read written by a male author, and I absolutely loved it! It perfectly balances heart-pounding adventure with just the right touch of romance to keep this hopeless romantic happy. 💫

Rise of the Phoenix is a super fun adventure and a brilliant introduction for readers wanting to dip their toes into high fantasy.
I'm not a big high fantasy reader and I often struggle with the genre, but Arnold has created such an easy read and hasn't overly complicated anything. It hugely accessible.
I have a soft spot for Seb - he has a rough ride in this book but still manages to stay positive, especially when it comes to his friends.
Haveena is truly wicked, and Rickard gave me those terrifying villian vibes I haven't felt since watching Game of Thrones (think Euron Greyjoy or Meryn Trant!)
Overall, this is a very enjoyable debut from Arnold and I can’t wait to see what happens next for Will and co.

I picked up this book 2 days ago and could not put it down. It developed into a strong fantasy novel with fast paced action, likable characters, a great world and intriguing magic. Can’t wait for the next instalment.

Rise of the Phoenix is the reluctant hero/ fated one origin story. Brendan beautifully crafts the magical world of Arulean with a horde of lovable and love to hate characters. What leapt out the most during the read was the emotional stakes and growth of all characters throughout the novel. Not just our heroes but our main villain as well. I had moments of joy, excitement, sorrow, and anger. Times when I wanted to reach in and hug characters and others we wanted to punch out.
I also enjoyed the way the magical system and political machinations unfolded throughout the story. Slowly but surely giving an understanding of the world around you and stakes at play as you get to know the main characters. The lore flowed organically within the story, telling you as much as you needed to know when required, rather than the dreaded old exposition dump.
Overall, Rise of the Phoenix gave Game of Thrones / Throne of Glass vibes. It keeps you on the edge of your seat till the very end, and I very much look forward to the next instalment. I have to know what happens next.

A traditional, high fantasy coming-of-age story with fun concepts but also, some confusing characterisation. I don't know if I'd feel comfortable gifting this to younger readers.
The author bio at the back of the book says that the author "aims to craft stories that are easy to read yet layered with themes that resonate with both adults and younger readers." I'm using that as a guide to my reading experience.
This story is easy to read, and the world is also easy to understand. I appreciate that this isn't always easy to achieve in the fantasy genre. Similarly, the themes are comfortably familiar to readers of fantasy: there are wrongs to be righted, a kingdom to be reclaimed, the protagonist discovers and learns to embrace his heritage, etc. Because of all this, the plot is easy to follow even though events move at a brisk pace. I have no issue with any of that.
Most of the story takes place from Will's point of view. Will is a bland, generally lawful-good protagonist who loves his friends and doesn't question his parents as much as I would expect (for an eighteen year old). He has fleeting moments of angst but spends more page time and . (I'm referring to pages 83 and 181 , and of course the in chapters 23 and 24)). Am I supposed to like him? I'm not sure.
The side POVs are just as puzzling.
Seb is a great friend to Will and has plenty of motivation to involve himself in events, but much of his actual POV doesn't have a direct impact on the plot - for context, . Now, I'm glad to see characters like Seb in fantasy, and extra glad that . I'm guessing that his sections will be expanded in future books: POV scene seems to exist purely to . Unfortunately, this first book is so plot-driven that Seb's POV could have been completely removed and the story would remain unchanged.
Aylise's POV focuses mainly on her . Shortly after , she's . While the epilogue hints at , I feel like
Queen Haveena is extremely difficult to take seriously, both a threat and a character. She channels numerous problematic fantasy tropes: she is a vicious, power-hungry witch-queen with no loyalty to anyone or anything except herself. Her POV recollections and regrets hint at a complex personality, but Haveena's disregard for others overrides the rest of her characterisation to the point that she appears cartoonishly stupid - as a ruler, and as a person. This lessens the impact of her engaging in , , and .
Notably, Haveena is not only the most character in the book, but also the most and .
Those were the things that took me out of the story.
Also, in case this is helpful to other readers, below are my notes on age-appropriateness:
***There's occasional swearing (e.g. page 137 and page 159 ).

I have so many conflicting emotions over this book, The pain and anguish Brendan put me though is UNFORGIVEABLE, but Holy Shit I enjoyed every moment of it.
Will is a great MC, he is kind, caring, adventurous and so obviously a teenager put in a situation no one should ever be put in. He does his best in a bad situation, and uses his drive to protect the people he loves to inform his decisions as he’s forced to make them.
The relationship between Will, Aylise and Seb is something to behold. They’re so tightly knit together that nothing can seem to pull them apart. They have unconditional love for each other, and will do what it takes to protect their bond.
Seb’s story is just heart breaking. I cried so much over what happened to him, and when I thought it couldn’t get worse, we get a glimpse into his mind and see how he is actually coping. I can’t wait to see how his losses help him grow into the man he is becoming.
Aylise is who finally gets Will to fully develop into the person he needs to be, to help bring justice to the people impacted by queen Haveena and Rickard. Her role in this book is bittersweet, but that epilogue though.... Cliffhanger!
As the antagonists, queen Haveena and king Rickard were truely the epitome of evil. I found it hard to feel sorry for the queen in her chapters, but I seriously wonder what happened for their relationship to turn out the way it did.
Although I REALLY dislike her, and want her to get unalived, I want to know more of her story.
The world, and lore, created by Brendan is epic. I want to know more about Phoenix’s and the other magical creatures of this world. I want to hear about myths and legends from it’s past. THAT’S how invested in this world I am. I want to know EVERYTHING.
I loved having a map to refer to at the beginning of the book, so I could physically follow Wills journey through Arulean.
The magic system seems awesome, and I can’t wait to learn more about fae powers, and those wielded by queen Haveena.
Will is a great MC, he is kind, caring, adventurous and so obviously a teenager put in a situation no one should ever be put in. He does his best in a bad situation, and uses his drive to protect the people he loves to inform his decisions as he’s forced to make them.
The relationship between Will, Aylise and Seb is something to behold. They’re so tightly knit together that nothing can seem to pull them apart. They have unconditional love for each other, and will do what it takes to protect their bond.
Seb’s story is just heart breaking. I cried so much over what happened to him, and when I thought it couldn’t get worse, we get a glimpse into his mind and see how he is actually coping. I can’t wait to see how his losses help him grow into the man he is becoming.
Aylise is who finally gets Will to fully develop into the person he needs to be, to help bring justice to the people impacted by queen Haveena and Rickard. Her role in this book is bittersweet, but that epilogue though.... Cliffhanger!
As the antagonists, queen Haveena and king Rickard were truely the epitome of evil. I found it hard to feel sorry for the queen in her chapters, but I seriously wonder what happened for their relationship to turn out the way it did.
Although I REALLY dislike her, and want her to get unalived, I want to know more of her story.

Unfortunately, this one completely missed the mark for me. It reads like a draft with much editing still to be done. While the story has potential, the writing is in need of work.
The narrative style is messy, there's too much infodumping, and both the characterisation and worldbuilding is more 'tell' than 'show'. There's also way too much repetition and recycled wording, which wouldn't be too bad if it wasn't so directly after each other. There's the odd typo here and there, which usually I can overlook in an indie novel, but compounded with all the other issues I identified, it further sealed the "this book is not for me" deal.
I found the writing much too juvenile for a YA, with an approach more suited to middle-grade or even children's fiction. I felt zero connection to the characters or storyline, and quite honestly, found the main character really annoying. Will is an ungrateful kid, with all the teenage angst you'd expect to have died down a bit by 18 (then again, 18 is still quite young, so I won't hold him to that too much).
Overall, not a fan!

I absolutely loved the premise of this book, there's absolutely so much potential. But unfortunately it missed the mark.
I felt like the writing, and yes I understand it's a YA, is quite young the format of the book is just very... Simple.
I also struggled a little bit with the lack of backstory of 2 of the key points that make up the plot which made it hard to grasp what's happening.
There's alot of repetition, I counted shaft 5 times in 3 pages which was a bit rough to read.
I loved the characters though, I will admit though right now I can through will put the window! But they have so much growth and potential to come, of course Seb is my favourite, he had to be!

I love it when a new fantasy world drags me in and i start to become so invested I wish I could live in the world of the book... Even if there are some evil sons of Bitches to take down! HAHA. This story was rich with lore but was written in a way that was so easy to follow and understand.
I have a new favourite trio and their names are Will, Aylise and Seb. I could quite happily read about their adventures forever. I adored the heck out of Seb and I got quite emotional a few times during parts of his story. Bless that boy.
I cannot wait to see what you have instore for us next Brendan, I can feel something big stewing!

Brendan I have just finished the rise of the Phoenix and enjoyed every word you have written . It is an amazing book. I’ve never enjoyed a fantasy book before and I just love love loved it. I was hooked on every word every twist and turn of the plot .
My heart rate increased as Will was trying to escape the city , I couldn’t put it down I kept reading later and later into the night. I was so upset when you killed off some of my favourite characters !! I had been drawn into their world.
You have taken your readers through every emotion with every part of the story . They are 3D words taking the reader along for the ride. Your unmatched talent flies off the page with every word!!I can’t wait to read the next one !!! !!!

I am not the target audience for this book.
Brendan Arnold markets his book as being accessible and easy to read, which I think it an accurate description. He has the workings of a good story here, but the execution of it misses the mark for me. As the book progresses, it feels like Arnold becomes more comfortable writing the character exchanges and the narrative starts to flow easier; however, early prose feels disjointed, lacks description, and is simplistic to a fault. I would have loved to see the characters skip their mental questioning, and allow the reader to ask those questions instead.
Overall, I think Arnold has a good foundation for his series, and look forward to seeing his growth as he continues to write about Will Tavner and his friends.

Wow! I am honestly flabbergasted from this book!!
My feels have been hurt but in a good way. This book was so devastatingly good, we have action, fire, prophecy’s, love, betrayal and heartbreak. The way a fictional character can embed their emotions into you is insane. How Will, Seb and Aylise interact with each other throughout friendship, love, grief and adventure fighting for their families and each other had me on the edge of my seat!!
During this book I laughed, I cried, I cringed, but above all I enjoyed the story. I honestly can’t wait for the next book, especially with an ending like that!!

This book was absolutely amazing. An emotional rollercoaster that had me hooked from the very first page. The writing is sharp, the characters feel real, and the twists had me gasping more than once. By the end, I was completely heartbroken, yet somehow thrilled and utterly confused in the best possible way.
The only disappointment? I don’t have book two ready to dive into right now! If you’re looking for a story that will grab your heart, mess with your mind, and leave you desperate for more, this is the one to start.

I loved this book. Will was sympathetic young hero and all the characters were so well drawn out. The world created by the author was so vivid and the twist and turn were thrilling. I just kept wanting to turn the page and find out what would happen to our three heroes and their supporters. I loved the villains too. The author shifted tones so effortlessly throughout the book between characters, keeping the story interesting. I never wanted to put the book down and was kind of sad when it ended. I just want more from this author! It was well worth the hype. I highly recommend it.

This was an enjoyable YA epic fantasy. I loved the idea of a race of magical people who were considered phoenixes but that it also had the phoenix birds.
I liked Will as a main character but was drawn more to Seb, his best friend, because of what he had to endure both in his past and throughout the book. I liked seeing how he dealt with it (without spoiling anything specific).
Absolutely loved how this book ended and I'm intrigued to read the next.
Note: although this is YA, there are low level sex scenes.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I've always struggled with reading many books as I can't hold attention to them very well. With this I was hooked. It flowed really smoothly, and the characters were awesome! It's hard to even pick a favourite they were so well written. Overall, it is a book that I was able to escape into, and when you're able to put yourself into the world created, what more do you really need? (other than the next book pls)

Love, love this book. This story of friendship, love, self discovery and power had me in from the very first page. I was there in the book with the characters laughing and crying with them, sharing their anger, sadness, and joy, I couldn’t put it down. This is an excellent story and I highly recommend it.

This book brought me so much joy and so much sadness for the characters in equal measure throughout. I really enjoyed the dynamic between Will, Seb and Aylise - their deep friendship and support for one another was heartwarming, and I wanted nothing more than for each of them to be able to have a happy ending after ensuring so much. Overall a fun fantasy read!

Wow! For a debut novel I’m shook. This book gives you everything. Action, adventure, world building, love, heartbreak, loss, and all the fantasy magic you could possibly imagine! I loved the characters but I especially loved Seb. My sweet sweet Seb 💛

An exciting debut novel that leaves me wanting much much more. I'm so invested in Rise of the Phoenix, and all it promises for the future ...... simply can't wait for the next instalment.
