Eyes of the Woods
Eris Helgren knew her life was about to end. A daughter of the Priory—a generations-old family who protect their territories from nightwalkers—Eris was strong and independent. This book has an awesome hook. I mean the idea that she knows deep in her gut that on her wedding day she will die--which can be interpreted in so many ways and levels. I bought this book for its teaser, and about three pages into it started to regret my decision.
Several inconsistencies and paragraphs riddled with purple prose in the beginning had me edgy and biting my lips in dismay, but it wasn't until she made her (spoiler...just warning you...turn back now if you don't want to know...ok, that's it) creepy vampire creatures into the stuff of Twilight romance that I felt sick to my stomach. It could have been good if the creatures in the woods had actually been scary. But they weren't.
The writing isn't bad. Edit: The more I think about this book the more I have to say the writing was painfully juvenile. I know the author is very young. That doesn't excuse the vapid, cheesey characters and disappointing plot 'twists'. It is also disappointing to think that she has ridden her way to publication fame on her mother's shirttails. I think kids should tough it out for themselves--when they are adults and ready to do so. Young teens will surely swoon and get the feels (oh, the feels!) when they read this. Which is fine; this is the intended audience, after all. Please, parents: don't let your children ask people to pay for their trope!

What a fantastic debut novel, from this young lady!! I was so very excited to read this. In all honesty, I went in with the notion of finding a young adult book for my daughter. I hoped being written by a 15 yr old, it wouldn’t have some of the stuff many other YA books have. I have struggled with finding true YA books without sex or language. I honestly don’t think they exist. But this book blew me away. It had the perfect amount of action. It was the PERFECT amount of sweet romance. It wasn’t overdone and sappy. It was perfectly innocent. I can’t wait for my daughter to read this!
The funny thing is, when I first started it, and she called her dad Father, I was immediately taken in. There’s something sweet about that. I can’t put my finger on it. Perhaps, deep down, I’m old fashioned.
I was drawn to Eris right away. She loved her family very much, but didn’t like some of the rules they had to follow. But being a good daughter, she was forced to go along with them, until something happened that changed the course of her life. But as I thought about what these kids watch on TV or video games, they would be used to things much worse.
As the primary book chooser for my kids it is very refreshing to find a true Young Adult book. Many YA books have sex and that is not needed or necessary in any YA books. This is the transition time. From kid books to teen books. We shouldn’t have to worry about warning our kids or blocking certain pages off. You should be able to pick up a YA book and hand it to any 12-15 yr old without having to worry about them reading about sex. This is a book I will be recommending to all of my fellow moms of tweens/teens.

After Twilight vampires became THE THING to read when it came to Young Adult fiction and for a few years that was pretty much all I read. I’ve got an entire bookshelf to prove it LOL, but as most fads go after a while vampires became clichéd and over done and I pretty much lost all interest in the topic. I haven’t picked up a vampire book in a couple of years and when I found out Eden Fierce had a debut novel coming out that was vampire-ish I had a few reservations about it. After all the buzz and looking into the storyline a little more I found myself more and more interested in the book.
Once I got the book and started reading I realized something right off the bat. This was NOTHING like Twlight. Eris was an amazing main character that was not only loyal but extremely brave too. She also wasn’t afraid to question tradition and stick up for herself. There were a few things that I thought would happen that never did and I didn’t expect the twists that did pop up! For a debut novel Eden Fierce did an amazing job and even though this is a standalone I’d love to see Eris and Daniel’s story expanded on! I highly recommend! Eyes of the Woods was a refreshing and amazing take on the vampire scene! I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next! I’ll be keeping my eyes out for more from this talented author!

Typical too much hype for a subpar novel. If the author didn't have a famous parent, I doubt people would even glance twice at it. I was one of the many who was curious about Eden Fierce's writing considering who her mom is.
The beginning was a bit confusing. I felt that the characters were introduced too fast and there was a fair amount of info dump. However, since this is quite a short standalone novel, it was a situation that couldn't been avoided. The world Eden imagined was rich and the story could have been more complex than it was. There was enough material here for a series. Overall, the characters lacked development and the pace felt too rushed. Everything was tied too neatly at the end.
The MC was very likable and so was the hero despite the Twilight vibe I got from him and his 'stalking'. I don't think the concept was that original. Okay, the vampires didn't sparkle in the sun but I couldn't help but to see the similarities between the two books.

First of, I would like to put it out there that I haven't read any of Jamie McGuire's books - the polarizing reviews of her book, "Beautiful Disaster" has kind of put me off picking it up. However, I was intrigued by her daughter's book because: a) It's a genre I've been drawn to lately; and b) I was curious to see what a 15-year old could come up with.
I'm happy to say that this book did not disappoint. Even though vampires have been overused to death since Twilight, Eden Fierce was able to treat us with a fresh take on vampires, or in this case, the nightwalkers. My interest was definitely captured from the beginning to end. I think it helped that the writing flowed effortlessly and pacing was just right. I also loved the main protagonist, Eris Helgren, had a lot of admirable qualities - she was level-headed, loyal, and fierce to the core.
The book is not without its faults. The first one is the romance. Although I like Daniel well enough as a love interest for Eris, the relationship feels a bit insta-lovey. I know that there were gaps when weeks have elapsed, but it was a stretch for me to imagine what have transpired within those time period for feelings to have progressed so fast.
The second problem I had with this book was I wished there were more world-building involved. Everything seems so isolated that I wish we learned more how this world came about on a larger scale. I also wish we were given more hints of the time period to have a better feel; that way, it wasn't so jarring when a kick-ass heroine is suddenly subjected to a betrothal and she's helpless to stop it.
Overall, I still think this was a solid debut novel, and an above-average quality compared to your run-of-the-mill self-published books.

The story was entertaining but the ending was a bit absurd--it would lead to another Fall. Eris's family was convinced too easily and events came together too quickly--but that seems to be the nature of YA books. The story was very predictable. Eris jumping into a ravine was also very unlikely considering her skill and intelligence. I would have had her get injured in a more plausible way. The writing was better than some adult authors. I think this storyline had a potential to be better than it turned out but it's a really good debut novel for a young author.

Eyes of the Woods was the most anticipated book of the summer for me and now having read it I truly was not prepared for it. It blew me away! I am completely amazed by Eden's talent at such a young age. She was only 14 years old when she wrote the book and now 15 on the date of its release. While I was reading I never got the sense of her youth. Her writing is very mature and her imagination is fierce. I was amazed by her use of vocabulary and descriptions. Her words painted a gorgeous illustration in my mind. There were several times when I had to stop and pause just to appreciate the profound beauty in one sentence. Her writing is astounding. There is so much talent revealed in her debut novel that we've only been given a glimmer of. I can't wait to see where her imagination takes her next and to read the beautiful words that I am sure will eloquently flow from it.

Such a Unique book, and a really good debut novel. I liked the romance and the way everything was explained. I liked Eris, such a fierce and powerfull character with many talents and I love her protective family. I only gave it four stars because I would have liked a longer book.

I definitely felt that Eyes of the Woods had a similar feel to other YA books, Twilight in particular, but it was still a fun read. The ending was a little too easy. Still, I enjoyed reading the novel and would probably read more by this author.

This girl is two years younger than me and already has a book published. I mean, it's who you know in this day and age...ie her mother is Jamie McGuire so it would kind of help to have a professional and famous author in your house. This cover is stunning, I really really like it so kudos on that!
The story had a lot of promise.
However, it started really quite dully, I didn't care for Eris from the onset and found myself wishing it was more from her brother's POV and less from hers. It got very good after the 80% mark and that's mainly where it got all it's stars from for me.
It's just not overly memorable.

When I first got this book, I will admit that I was a little apprehensive. I love her mother's work, but sometimes it doesn't translate from one generation to another. So, it took me a few days to decide that I wanted to read the book - WOW. Just, wow, and not what I expected, and amazing. She really made me feel for these characters! And, because I suck at reading the synopsis, I didn't even know what I was getting into. I love the freshness of this! Many other authors have tried to take these creatures and turn them into something else. I like that they weren't referred to as vampires - I think that made it better. Some of the same attributes, but still different and..interesting! I like to see how people can change a being we all know about, and this was seamless. Great first book, Eden! I can't wait to see what else is brewing in that head!

First off, I commend Eden Fierce for writing this story. I can't believe that she wrote this story at the age of 15. That's pretty impressive and thanks for the story. However, I felt It went from okay to good at around 73% then the ending just boring. The world was a little bit confusing. The characters were good, wish there was more about Daniel. I felt sad that . I'm happy that . I was sad when . I thought the ending could have use some work. I think the book has a theme that we should not judge people by appearance alone

I admit, I picked up this book mainly because it was written by Jamie McGuire's 15 year old daughter. But I was also intrigued by the synopsis.
Other than reading the synopsis, I really had no idea what to expect from Eyes In The Woods, but I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was very well written, although very Twilight-esque.
It was very descriptive, and the storyline was well developed. I really liked Eris and her family. And though I knew there would be a battle between the Priory and the nightwalkers at some point, there were many twists and turns that I just did not see coming.
Overall, a quick enjoyable read. Lots of action, a little romance. But my favorite thing about this book was the family dynamics. My own family is very close, and I really loved the interactions between Eris and her brothers and her parents.

I really like that this one is a stand-alone novel. For this kind of history it's not a simple thing to write just a book and not a series, and so there are some things that are not optimal, there is too little space to characters development, for example, and the world building is just summary.
But the author menages to create characters that have their own personality and that you can easily identify. The story is a little rushed, but in the end it's not a bad reading, it's fast paced and you can read the book very quickly.

This book was easy to read and interesting enough to keep me going, but once I finished it I was glad it was finally over. The characters were bland and the story advanced too quickly making it hard to actually feel anything whenever something interesting happened, so I ended up just reading for the sake of it instead of actually enjoying each important moment. Overall it wasn't a bad book, it just could have been way better.

La idea y los personjes estan muy bien. Eris es una protagonista con mucho caracter y sentido comun, de Daniel no se distingue mucho y es una pena xq creo q es un persoanje con mucho q decir. El desarrollo de la historia es predecible y toda la lucha final es un poco no creible. De la noche ala mañana se tranforman todos y ganan una batalla imposible?

For a debut novel of a teen author this book is more than amazing...I love the characters and the story very much...And yes in parts it can be obvious Eden's ages but nevertheless it's a great first attempt and looking forward to read more by her...

Highly impressed by Ms. Eden's debut novel!! Was absolutely hooked from the beginning!! Loved the characters and loved the story! Different from anything I've read before!! Well earned 5 stars!

La idea original esta bien pero la historia de amor hace agua por todos lados. no enamora a nadie!. Los personajes carecen de algo,que no puedo decir bien que es.... hay algo que le falta a la historia en general que no te termina de enganchar. Es como si fuera todo muy forzado y entonces poco creible.

I confess that I purchased Eye in the Woods because of its beautiful cover. Really, look at it! It’s gorgeous! How could I resist it? Well, obviously I couldn’t. After reading the book and went to investigate more about its author, Eden Fierce, and I found out that she published this book when she was fourteen! Now, that’s just plain amazing.
Eyes of the Woods has to do with nightwalkers, which translates to vampires. Eris is the only daughter of the Priory and together with her three brothers, they are trained to kill the nightwalkers. They think that the nightwalkers are crazed beings that stopped being human (sort of like zombies) and are only driven by the thirst for human blood. Humanity is in danger of being exterminated, so the survivors live in towns that are protected by different Priories.
Erin’s 17th birthday is fast approaching and that night she must stand in front of the town of Ona in her red dress and her father will announce the selected a man that will be her husband. They are to “court” for one year and then marry on her next birthday. Erin hates this, she feels a sense of premonition of doom that is aggravated by the consistent feeling of being watched (thus, “eyes in the woods”.) I can’t tell you much more without spoiling it for you.
Erin is a good tracker, a loving daughter and sister, loyal, smart, strong, and resistant to the constraints of her time. Daniel is very patient, lonely, intelligent, secretive, and understanding. I did like that their relationship was slow to grow, both in trust and in love. Daniel is first her guide, teacher, and protector, and then becomes Eris’ friend, partner, and love. The romance is pretty clean, as you can expect from a teenage author.
Eyes of the Woods is not perfect. It suffers from Information dump, especially at the beginning. The world building was pretty good and it left very few unanswered questions for me. However, it is not all original. Now, I’m not saying that I was expecting a completely original book, after all we are talking about vampires here, but I felt that it borrowed certain aspects from the Twilight books. For instance, Eris feels like she’s predestine to live in the woods and feels bad for the creatures that she’s supposed to kill, the nightwalkers can go out during the day and have red eyes, and Daniel spies on Eris. Another observation was the Inconsistent use of words, phrases and behaviors that seem to be out of the time period.
I love the Helgren family, they were so loving that the affection is palpable through the pages. The ending is pretty well executed. It was unexpected for me, but it felt more “real” since it’s not all pink and wrapped in bows. I think Fierce did a good job for her first book, I’m not sure if the book was edited or not, as I said above, there were some inconsistencies.
Overall, Eyes of the Woods was an entertaining, short read. It has room for improvement, but it is impressive writing and a good story for the fourteen-year old author. It will be very interesting to see what she writes next.This review was originally posted on Reading With ABC

Now, I’m not saying that I was expecting a completely original book, after all we are talking about vampires here, but I felt that it borrowed certain aspects from the Twilight books. For instance, Eris feels like she’s predestine to live in the woods and feels bad for the creatures that she’s supposed to kill, the nightwalkers can go out during the day and have red eyes, and Daniel spies on Eris. Another observation was the Inconsistent use of words, phrases and behaviors that seem to be out of the time period.
I love the Helgren family, they were so loving that the affection is palpable through the pages. The ending is pretty well executed. It was unexpected for me, but it felt more “real” since it’s not all pink and wrapped in bows. I think Fierce did a good job for her first book, I’m not sure if the book was edited or not, as I said above, there were some inconsistencies.
Overall, Eyes of the Woods was an entertaining, short read. It has room for improvement, but it is impressive writing and a good story for the fourteen-year old author. It will be very interesting to see what she writes next.This review was originally posted on Reading With ABC

Eris Helgren was born into a life she would not have chosen. People from the outside and even her family see being in the Priory a honor. The Helgren family is strong and for generations have been responsible for protecting the people from nightwalkers. Eris's ancestors even made discoveries in ways to better destroy the monsters and use their remains to create a serum that could sustain a humans youthfulness. Eris has become a skilled hunter and though she loves her time in the woods, she will never love the hunt. The biggest disappointment in life is just days away when she will be betrothed to a man of her father's choosing.
It almost seems as her mind is playing tricks on Eris as she begins to feel someone is watching her and then spots the red eyes of a nightwalker peering at her from the wall the surrounds her home. It turns out that her betrothal wasn't to be the biggest change on her birthday. She was right about someone watching her. She never expected that the red eyes she saw would belong to a nightwalker that would save her life. And so begins my swooning for Daniel.
Eris finds herself being chased by two nightwalkers that nearly take her life. Daniel decides to claim her which means he changes her into a nightwalker as well. He's so sweet and gentle with her as the change mends her wounds. When Eris was a child she once told her family she wanted to be a night walker. It's no wonder she takes so quickly to the changes that come with being claimed. It's like she was meant to be one of them all along except for now she's lost her family. Surely they would never accept her change.
Daniel and Eris spend most of their time together in the next few weeks. It's clear that Daniel has been developing feelings for Eris for quite some time. Eris learns that so much of what the humans believe about the nightwalkers is false. She adjusts into life among the nightwalkers but her need to be with her family only continues to grow. Daniel is convinced that together he and Eris can help form a truce between the humans and the nightwalkers by convincing her father of the truth of the immortals. But again not all is as it seems. Other forces are at work to keep the two species apart. Though Eris's choice could be the difference between peace and war I was happy the choice was never about having to choose anything over Daniel. That is probably my favorite thing about the story is how their relationship grows and is never brought into question. I loved their tender moments and while I can't lie and say I didn't want more intimate moments between them, it wasn't necessary to make me love the story. By the last forty percent of the story I couldn't put it down. I was surprised by some of the character losses and can't say for sure what happened to the guy that Eris' father had chosen for her. But I was fully claimed by the action and had to see where this story would go.
With Twilight being the reason I began reading books for enjoyment in the first place I was concerned about being able to get into another vampire story. It can be hard to not want to compare all other vampires to ones created in Twilight. I'm happy to say Eyes Of The Woods stood apart and I fell in love with Daniel and Eris. I also loved other supporting characters like her brothers that I hope will have stories in the future. My biggest praise goes to the author for writing such an incredible debut novel at only fourteen. I'm so proud for her and will look forward to her next book.

If I am being 100% honest, I will tell you that I chose to read this book for only 2 reasons, the cover is amazing and the author is only 15 (14 at the time she wrote it)! That is pretty amazing in itself. Everyone knows that I love paranormal romance and this seemed like a win/win to read and review. Now, I am going to go ahead and tell you what you probably already know, this book is written by the fabulous Jamie McGuire’s daughter. Does that impact my review or feelings at all? Nope. I love Jamie, but as a reviewer, I have to look at things unbiased. I have to keep my integrity as a reviewer/blog so rest assured when you read reviews here that they are 100% honest regardless of who the author/publisher.
This book was a fun read that I think for a debut author was really good. The storyline was creative and little hard to follow at first, but once I focused in on it I could see the story unfolding more clearly. I really love the protagonist, Eris and the struggles she faces. She seems to be a strong character and capable of holding her own regardless of what life throws at her. Eris is the daughter of the town Prior, the leader of the town if you will. Her father’s responsibility is to keep humans safe from nightwalkers, evil, undead zombie/vampire beings that feed on human blood. Her dad, three brothers and Eris hunt every night for these creatures to protect the humans. The problem? Eris is not so sure she is doing the right thing by killing them.
Daniel is the love interest in the story and I really love him. He is really sweet, caring and genuinely wants what is best for Eris. He consistently wants what is best for her and what girl doesn’t love that? I don’t want to say too much about him or their relationship though as I think it is best to watch it unfold yourself.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. It reminded me of a cross between Twilight and White Walkers on Game of Thrones. I am really impressed with Eden Fierce as an author and want to see more from her in the future. I did feel that the story was a little rushed and I think the connection with Eris and Daniel could have been expounded upon further. The plot climax was a little predictable and rushed as well. I also felt that there could have been an epilogue that tied the story up a little nicer. However, I think Eden did a better job than some authors twice her age, so kudos to her! Eyes of the Woods is a debut novel by fifteen year old, Eden Fierce. It is a paranormal fantasy book where two sides have been involved in a conflict foryears.
This book was a very quick and short read. It has less than 300 pages yet it felt as though so much has happened throughout the whole book. For that reason, I really admire Eden’s writing. The ability to make a short book feel as though you’ve been through a lot with the characters. Eden Fierce’s writing is simply remarkable.
Her writing was very smooth. I had no trouble getting into the world. I was hooked from the first page. Other than that, I appreciated the dialogues in the story. It suited very well to the theme and setting of the book.
The world and setting of the book is not the most developed. However, I wasn’t bothered by it. There were a lot on intriguing and unique elements that contributed to the whole story. There was never a dull moment. Furthermore, it wasn’t very predictable. I also liked how the nightwalkers were similar to vampires in a way, yet they weren’t.
The characters in the book were pleasant. I have grown to love and care for them especially Eris, her family and love interest. The relationship and bond that she had with these characters and the friends she has made were such joy to read about.
All in all, I really loved and enjoyed this book. I did not go into much detail about the plot because I think it’s a book worth going into on your own. It’s a very fast read so you’ll fly through this. I finished this book in less than a day. It was a fantastic book filled with adventure, action and romance.
