Uncommon Testosterone describes the mechanisms by which cold plunge therapy can stimulate testosterone synthesis via the mitochondria. Integrating case studies, testimonials, the author's personal experience, and hundreds of scientific citations, this text explores the transformative potential of ice baths for achieving healthy sex steroid hormone levels in men and women. Uncommon Testosterone is written for the curious, the critical, and anyone intrigued by the prospect of exploring cold plunge therapy as a route to long-lasting fertility, sex function, sexual performance, and general well-being. It overturns popular misconceptions with regard to testosterone and prostate cancer risks by incorporating the latest scientific findings, and explains the critical role of mitochondrial health in resolving erectile dysfunction. Also included are sections on how exercise, Vitamin D, certain minerals, herbs, supplements, sleep, and sunshine can be used to optimize testosterone levels. Step-by-step protocols for boosting testosterone, reducing prostate inflammation, and sparking romance in loving relationships are added to empower readers to begin their own self-guided experiments with cold plunge therapy. Uncommon Testosterone is an essential scientific companion for biohackers and medical professionals seeking to reverse decades-long decline in total testosterone that currently plagues men and women in industrialized societies.
Combination review because his other book “Uncommon Cold” isn’t on good reads. Better than I expected! I figured it would just be lots of “Cold Plunge! it’s good for you!” I wasn’t dissappointed. But. He quoted study after study for lots of different things and gave some good (backed by experts) advice on when NOT to. Who it isn’t good for. Some fascinating cancer theory.
Uncommon Testosterone: Eh, just his other book condensed a bit w some additional info on T, but not ground breaking.
I initially assumed that Thomas P. Seager, PhD's book "Uncommon Testosterone: Cold Plunge Therapy for Optimizing Sexual Health" wouldn’t apply to me as a woman. Like many people, I had always considered testosterone to be primarily a “male hormone,” something distant from my own health concerns. But after I listened to Dr. Seager describe his deeply personal—and potentially lifesaving—experience with cold plunge therapy on his cutting-edge podcast "Uncommon Living," I felt a spark of curiosity that I couldn’t ignore. I immediately purchased the Kindle book and Audible version.
During the "Uncommon Living" podcast's inuagural episode "Deliberate Cold Exposure (DCE) might change your life. It changed mine." Dr. Seager recounted his frighteningly high prostate cancer screening (PSA ) level. He explained how he responded to this scare in a way that was unconventional yet grounded in science. My father had prostate cancer, my two grandmothers died of lung cancer, and I've lost friends to ovarian and breast cancer. I've carried a fear of getting cancer. Dr. Seager's experience made me wonder: what if there are tools out there—accessible, practical tools that can help mitigate our chances of getting cancer or help with acute forms of cancer—that we’ve been overlooking?
What surprised me most about listening to "Uncommon Testosterone" was how relevant the book is for women. This isn’t just a book about men’s health—it’s about mitochondrial health, hormone balance, vitality, and long-term well-being for everyone. The accessible way Dr. Saeger connects cold exposure, testosterone, and overall health is both intellectually fascinating and, more importantly, incredibly empowering.
Hearing about men's and women's personal stories of transformation affected me deeply and reinforced that this isn’t a one-size-fits-all, male-focused approach. Using the correct protocols for cold exposure and cold plunging and boosting one’s testosterone with other natural methods can meaningfully impact women’s health, energy, and even emotional resilience.
The final audio section contains Dr. Seager's in-depth interviews with a variety of people, and that was the most powerful part for me. Listening to men and women from all walks of life describe how they changed their lives—often after struggling for years—added a level of authenticity that has stayed with me long after I finished listening.
I’m a voracious audiobook fan, and I found the audio version of “Uncommon Testosterone” to be an extraordinary production. I enjoyed listening to it daily during my forest walks. Dr. Saeger is a gifted orator who has honed this ability as an associate professor at Arizona State University. The audio version broke down the science clearly, and when people shared their journeys in their own words, I was not only better informed; I also felt moved and inspired beyond words.
“Uncommon Testosterone” has shifted how I think about my own health. It left me feeling more curious, more open, and ultimately more motivated to explore approaches I might have dismissed before. For anyone—especially women—who has ever felt uncertain, overwhelmed, or even fearful about their long-term health, Dr. Seager's book is a groundbreaking tour de force. "Uncommon Testosterone" offers a compelling perspective that is down-to-earth, life-changing, and genuinely hopeful.
