In this gripping new installment of the Edgar Award winning series, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder investigates a brutal double murder that takes her into the dark underbelly of society and exposes the dangers of Amish lives gone wrong.

Summer has arrived with a vengeance in Painters Mill, and a macabre discovery by three Amish children brings the quiet to a grinding halt. Chief of Police Kate Burkholder arrives on scene to find the dismembered body of 21-year-old Samuel Eicher, a local Amish man who owned a successful landscaping business. What twisted individual murdered him in such a sadistic way?

The investigation has barely begun when, miles away, a second body is found, stuffed into a barrel and dumped in a ravine. The deceased is 21-year-old Aaron Shetler, Samuel Eicher’s best friend. What could these two young Amish men have done to deserve such violent ends?

With a heat wave bearing down, Kate learns quickly that, for reasons she doesn’t understand, no one is willing to talk about what happened to the men. Just as she begins to fear the case may be hopeless, a mystery woman comes forward and reveals that fun-loving Aaron and Samuel had recently befriended some very unsavory characters―individuals who may have ties to a larger, more sinister, black market.

To solve the case, Kate must delve into the most sordid corners of her community, but when she gets too close, the killers target Kate herself. Will the secrets simmering beneath the surface of Painters Mill take another life before she can expose the truth? Or will Kate be the final victim?

Ready for your yearly visit to Painters Mill?
Once again, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is hoping for a quiet, and trouble-free summer both in town and the neighboring Amish community. Well, so much for wishful thinking, Chief. Three Amish kids have just stumbled across a body on their family property. And before Kate can get a grip on what happened, more bodies turn up.

As Kate And her new husband John Tomasetti, (from the Ohio Bureau of Investigations) get started on the case, they’re un- prepared for what they uncover, as the worlds of the English and Amish collide.

I adore Kates’ character as she balances her professional and personal life. As I say every year, I would like just a bit more of her and Tomasetti's relationship. And of course, the whole gang makes an appearance from Pickles to Glock and all other members of her force.

Does Kate take senseless chances in this book? Well yes, of course! I’m starting to come to terms with that just being how she rolls, and to expect it. But I needed to at least mention it here!😅

Linda Castillo once again delivers a great addition to a long standing series. I can’t believe we’re at book 17 and still going as strong as ever. (Not an easy task!)

If you enjoy police procedurals with some Amish culture mixed in, (And who doesn’t?💁🏼‍♀️) Then this is a perfect read for you.

It can definitely be read as a stand-alone but you’d be missing out on one of the best series! So I highly recommend starting with book one, Sworn to Silence.

Until next year...

It’s hot and muggy in Painters Mill, Ohio and things are heating up for Chief of Police Kate Burkholder and her team. Rage by Linda Castillo is chilling, suspenseful, and dark. Kate calls her husband Tomasetti with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Sheriff Mike Rasmussen for assistance as murders start to pile up for the team. A dismembered body that is found by children is only the beginning of this story. As the team investigates, it becomes clear that someone will stop at nothing, including killing police officers, to hide their crimes. Can they be exposed and arrested before this happens?

The characterization is excellent, making each person come to life for me. Readers of the series will be familiar with many of them. One thing that struck me as slightly odd was the number of nicknames for officers on Kate’s investigation team. She likes to finish what she starts, is focused, hates the politics and media side of the job, and is respected by her officers. She’s loyal, driven, intelligent, has good instincts, and is courageous, but she’s also impulsive and ends up alone in situations where she needs backup. Kate comes alive and it’s easy to connect with her and want her to succeed in finding the killer. Since she grew up Amish, she is mindful of the divide between them and the English communities and tries to bridge the divide and earn the trust of both sides.

As usual, the novel is descriptive to the point of being graphic at times with the murder descriptions. However, it also easily transported me to Painters Mill in summer. The plot twists worked well and the ending was action-packed. Ms. Castillo is an excellent storyteller who kept me engaged with gripping scenes and a creative plot that built suspense. The story captivated me from beginning to end. However, it is somewhat over-the-top from the standpoint that some events should have resulted in characters being on medical leave rather than retraining immediately to work. Ms. Costillo is clearly a master at building tension and delivering exciting results that keep readers engaged. Themes include trust, greed, respect, innocence, naivety, secrets, murder, and complicated family and community relationships.

Overall, this book was gritty, suspenseful, action-packed, and gripping. This novel should delight those readers that enjoy police procedurals, crime thrillers, and mysteries that have a strong female lead character. However, be aware that it is also unsettling at times. I’m looking forward to reading more books by this author. This is the seventeenth book in the series.

4⭐
Genre ~ police procedural
Series ~ Kate Burkholder, #17
Others in the series ~ the whole series
Setting ~ Ohio
Publication date ~ July 8, 2025
Publisher ~ Macmillan Audio
Est Page Count ~ 296 (p+ 28 chapters)
Audio length ~ 9 hours 17 minutes
Narrator ~ Kathleen McInerney
POV ~ single 1st, and 3rd
Featuring ~ murder, violence, long chapters

Kate and her team are back investigating more brutal murders. This time it’s 21 year old men just trying to make a decent living, or were they…

I just have to wonder if Kate gets a new Explorer every time because it seems to get beat up every book, just like her. Man she takes a thrashing, but keeps on doing her best for Painter’s Mill. The whole team’s investigative skills are top notch. If my death was suspicious I'd want them on the case.

Anyway, another wonderful, brutal and action packed edition to the series.

Series notes:
I think you should read them all in order because they’re great, but I suppose it’s not absolutely necessary. Each book follows a different murder, but Kate’s life is progressing.

Narration notes:
A bit robotic at times, but she does well overall.

Kate Burkholder is back! The ex-Amish cop we all know and love returns in another gripping installment—and once again, her passion and dedication to protect her people shine through.

Linda Castillo delivers yet another strong addition to the series. The mystery surrounding the brutal murder of Amish boy Samuel Eicher is intense, and Kate gives it everything she’s got to find the truth. The story flows so well, with the perfect mix of emotion and suspense.

I also love Kate’s team—though I always find myself wishing for more Tomasetti scenes (he’s definitely my book boyfriend in this series!).

A solid, page-turning mystery that keeps the series going strong. Can’t wait for the next one!

Big thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC!

4 stars for book 17 in the Kate Burkholder series. While you can read this book as a stand alone, you will understand the characters better if you read the series in order. The book opens with a grisly discovery: two children discover human body parts. Kate is the police chief of the fictional town of Painter's Mill, Ohio. She has a 5 person department, but can and does get help from the Sheriff's department and the Ohio state BCI(Bureau of Criminal Investigation). Kate does solve the case, but not before more deaths.
She is now married to John Tomasetti, an investigator for BCI. There are some things that happen in this book that happen in almost every book in the series: Kate is attacked several times, but miraculously survived a vicious beating, and being hit by car. This is fiction and in real life she would be dead or on disability retirement.
The book examines the dangers of rumspringa, the Amish word for teenagers going wild before being baptized and committing to the Amish way of life.
There is some bad language, no graphic sex and the horrific violence is post mortem.
Thank you Katie Layton at St. Martin's Press for sending me this eARC through NetGalley.

“When the caterpillar thought her world was ending, she became a butterfly.”

What are your first thoughts when you hear the words rage? Well, mine are to consider what the definition brings to mind.

“Violent, uncontrollable anger.”

And, in true Castillo fashion, she lays out the remnants of a fairly violent unfortunate crime for kids to come upon while playing hide and seek in the woods. Can you even imagine such a horrible circumstance for kids to have to see? Side note: Was this even necessary to the plot?

And, even if I am not revealing the spoiler crime, the idea of it, is still that the title of this book leaves something to our imagination, right? Rage. Still, what would create such rage here?

Is it the crime itself? Is it what leads to the crime? Is it the aftermath of the crime? Or, is it what readers discover about what is behind the crime? Maybe, the ultimate crime? Is there more to this story?

This is what readers will need to contemplate as they quickly turn pages.

This is not a stand-alone. So, for those unfamiliar with this series, it is always best to begin at the beginning, so that you can get a good sense of the characters, the town of Painters Mill, and the background, which finds our main characters in the midst of Amish country vs. the ‘others’ who learn to live alongside each other. And, that is especially true for Police Chief, Kate Burkholder, who once lived amongst them, and who is now investigating the brutal murder (s).

What created this rage? And, what of the subsequent murders? What will she discover as she and her team dig deep into the investigation? Who is so keen to keep the Chief from looking into them? And, why?

As pages keep turning, and more is revealed, readers will learn about the darkness and naivete that surrounds this case. And, the team’s ability to get to the truth.

However, there is one reason this reviewer chooses to place this review one star down. In each of the stories, I have read over the past few, the Chief has a way of heading in to danger on her own that seems to be a bit too often. I hope the author changes this in the future. There is no reason to do this to create tension with her main character and the story. The story still has merit regardless.

As with every book in this series, it deals with grisly crimes, Amish secrets, and Kate throwing herself into danger, always recklessly. I guess that familiarity is part of the charm.

This one deals with some insidious topics, I kind of wanted to see Kate go ballistic on these guys, but unfortunately she conducts herself with her usual professionalism. Bah.

Tropes
Small-town police procedural
Female chief of police
Tight-knit community with secrets
Amish culture and customs
Brutal/mysterious double murder
Criminal underworld subplot
HFN

As always, we need more romance from Kate and Tomasetti.

Comfortably predictable, but still an entertaining visit to Painters Mill.

Number 17 in the series and still going strong!

There are several very nasty deaths in the Amish neighbourhood and Kate has some very near misses herself. There is a lot of suspense in this episode and plenty of moments of sitting on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. Kate is getting better at calling for back up but sometimes with the best will in the world it just does not arrive in time.

The relationship between Kate and Tomasetti is perfect and it is nice that he takes a much bigger part now in solving the cases. A bonus star for the arrival of a cat. Every home should have one. An easy five stars from me!

This is book 17 in the Kate Burkholder series. I enjoy them even if I haven’t read them all. I like this thriller/mystery series involving the Amish because it is so different than anything else I read. I understand this is a small town sheriff but I thought it took a silly amount of time for the law enforcement agencies to figure out what was happening in this one. I liked the mystery in general and thought it was good, but I also thought it was silly that no matter how many times it went badly Kate refused to wait for back up even when it wasn’t an urgent matter. Other than that I really enjoyed this story. It was a quick read and definitely entertaining. Kate is called to the scene when some Amish children found a couple of severed body parts. This leads her on an investigation that discovers more than one life was lost in this small town.

The heatwave was devouring the residents of Painters Mill; only the children seemed to have energy to play. And it was three Amish children playing hide-and-seek who stumbled across a dismembered body, partly buried but disturbed by coyotes. Chief of Police, Kate Burkholder was immediately on the case, with the shock at the horror killing bemusing her. Who would murder the young owner of a nursery - and why? It wasn't long before another body was discovered, this time at the bottom of a ravine. Kate knew something terrible was happening in Painters Mill, and she was determined to find the answers.

With Tomasetti by her side - BCI and husband - and her small team of officers working with little sleep, Kate slowly joined the dots. And what she found, she didn't like. But they were now after Kate, as she was getting too close...

Rage is #17 in the Kate Burkholder series by Linda Castillo and once again it was full on from the first page. Electrifying, fast paced, peril at every corner, and Kate putting herself in danger (as usual), I loved this episode, as I've loved all the previous books. Looking forward to more adventures in Painters Mill! Highly recommended.

She’s back! Police Chief, Kate Burkholder, and her motley crew (her fellow officers) along with hubby, John Tomasetti are on the case of some of the most gruesome murders in the history of the series – at least to me they are. This is probably one of the darkest and most twisted installments so far.

”Children discovering body parts in the woods is extremely unlikely in a town like Painters Mill.” - Kate Burkholder

Yes, this is true, but finding dead bodies in Painters Mill is not all that uncommon, at least not for Kate and her crew. I’ve said this before, but it bears mentioning again, the crime rate in Painters Mill is pretty high for such a small rural town and in this Amish community, the Amish get knocked off at an alarming rate, which makes their suspicions and caution of “the English” a rather prudent and valid attitude.

The book summary introduces the primary storyline of the two Amish friends, Samuel and Aaron being brutally murdered. What the book summary doesn’t mention is the lawsuit against Samuel, a tree farmer and landscaper, from a wealthy and respected local business owner for some shoddy work. There are also questions surrounding the possible relationship between Samuel and Cass, a local exotic dancer (and formerly Amish), who seems to have disappeared around the same time that Samuel was murdered.

Most of the story revolves around Kate and her crew, along with Tomasetti, investigating the case. Kate believes the murders have a “big city” vibe to them and that perhaps Samuel and Aaron had gotten involved in something that was out of their depth of handling, especially since Samuel had just recently returned home and to the Amish fold from his Rumspringa period. It’s deep into the second half, and as the body count increases, that Kate and the team realize that the danger and threats are much closer to home. The end comes to an intense and scary end for Kate, who in true bad@$$ form, takes a beating and gets up swinging – every time!!!

The continuing character development of Kate and Tomasetti, along with some of the other characters continue to exhibit that all is not what it seems in Painters Mill. Kate is a total bad@$$ and I love that about her. The pacing was steady to fast, never dragging, at least not to me. The storyline was interesting and the writing was classic Castillo, who is a really good writer and storyteller; I really enjoy her work. I’m looking at an overall rating of 4.3 that I will be rounding down to a 4star review. I want to thank NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for sending me this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Our former Amish chief of Police is back! This time trying to unravel the mystery of a dismembered body found in a field. When more bodies turn up, she's forced to take a closer look at the first victim's relationship with his clients. Girls are leaving their Amish flock for the outside world; only to find that it comes with its price!!

ARC for review. To be published July 8, 2025.

3 stars

Three Amish children find the dismembered body of 21 year old Samuel Yutzy, a local Amish landscaper. Then a second body is found, that of 22 year old Aaron Shetler, Samuel’s best friend. Were the two involved in something that lead to their violent deaths? (See, I’m no ex-Amish CoP, but I’m going with “signs point to true.”)

This looks to be the 17th in the Kate Burkholder series; Burkholder was raised Amish and is Chief of Police in her small Ohio town. I have read a grand total of one before this one, and that is only because I am low-key fascinated with and by the Amish. Is every book about the Amish or does she have regular crimes? So, this was fine. And a bit depressing.

This is an Amish Mystery/Thriller, and this is the 17th book in the Kate Burkholder series. I have read the first sixteen books (and most of the Novellas too) before picking up this book. I think this series would be better if read in order. I read this book by listening to the audiobook, and I loved the audiobook. I really love the Kate Burkholder series, and I love how she is always put into live and death moments. I figured out part of what was going on early, but I loved this book. I loved all the drama and craziness in this book. Of course Katie gets herself into trouble. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

Kate is called to a crime scene where some Amish children have just found part of a body--a young Amish man has been shot and dismembered. He may have been involved in something illegal, but no one seems to want to talk. Then there are two more murders of young Amish people who were breaking away, and it becomes clear that something evil is going on. Trafficking innocent young women? There are people who want Kate stopped, and she is in jeopardy more than once. Painter's Mill is a dangerous place, and this is a very dark novel. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the ARC.

Castillo writes in a unique, gritty manner where the raw detail makes the story come to life. We get a feel for the Amish community and their innate protection of each other, along with the secrets that they hold.

But we also get an in-depth view of the crime and activity that goes on behind the scenes that is not common knowledge.

This particular story latches on to vicious crimes and grizzly murders, all in the name of protecting criminal activity that is not typically expected in our culture and society.

With a tough-as-nails detective, who is from their world, we dive into the culture, trying to solve the murders. Kate is smart and uber resilient, especially as she becomes a target as well. Her husband, Tomasetti, is a sweet breath of fresh air and comfort, helping with his resources as well.

If you enjoy unsuspecting, gritty cases like this, Castillo keeps the reader on the edge with her highly developed, kick butt characters, her intense descriptions, and a simmering love story that still needs to be told! Castillo seems to fly under the radar, but I am quickly becoming addicted to her stories!

This visit to Painter's Mill was a nail-biter! I absolutely could not IMAGINE what was going to happen next in Rage!

#17 finds Police Chief Kate Burkholder being called out after three Amish children discover human remains while playing in the woods. Kate determines the body belongs to a young Amish nursery owner in Painters Mill. From there, the mystery deepens ... as does the danger.

Kate Burkholder, having been Amish herself, walks a fine line between Amish and Englisher communities, and the author describes both sides beautifully! As always, I was fascinated to learn more about Amish living.

I love the relationship Kate and Tomasetti share and I hope this series never ends!! Rage can be read as a standalone, but readers will get so much more out of it if they start with book #1.

Thank you, #MinotaurBooks, for providing this book for review and consideration via #NetGalley. All opinions are my own. Rage has an expected publication date of July 8, 2025.

4-4.5 stars. A young Amish man is found murdered and dismembered in the sleepy little town of Painters Mill, Ohio. He had recently returned to the fold after some wild ways during his rumspringa. Kate Burkholder, Chief of Police and formerly Amish herself, has to figure out what mischief he'd gotten into that got him killed.

I've dipped into this series a few times now and always find a real page-turning mystery. This one is no exception and can be read as a standalone.

This is the seventeenth Kate Burkholder book in the series and I've read quite a few of them, so I was happy to see this one. I do like this series and enjoy the character.

Description:

My Thoughts:
The murders in the quiet, Amish community are horrific. Kate has her work cut out for her, and there don't seem to be many clues. I enjoy reading about Kate and how she uses her background of growing up Amish to help her communicate and understand those in the Amish community even though she is not a part of it anymore. The case is a difficult one and Kate can't seem to find her way though it, but then someone comes forward. Well, not quite - she has to push. Scared people don't like to talk. This was a challenging investigation that I enjoyed following.

I look forward to July each and every summer because that means another fabulous novel from one of my favorite authors and book series will be released. I absolutely adore Chief Kate Burkholder and have been loving my visits to Painters Mill, Ohio, since 2009!! I look toward to few books as much as I do these, because they give me the chance to reconnect with characters whom I've grown to love.

In Linda Castillo’s newest novel RAGE, Chief Kate Burkholder and Agent John Tomasetti (who just happens to be Kate’s husband) find themselves investigating the brutal murders of two young Amish men. Kate Burkholder is once again at the top of her game as she delves into this case that rocks the Amish community to the core. But as we’ve learned over the course of 17 novels, criminals don’t stand a chance against Kate and her dedicated team of police officers.

I absolutely love Linda Castillo’s writing, which masterfully blends small-town tension with chilling twists, keeping you on edge from the first page to the last. The cast of characters in this series is truly remarkable and incredibly likable, and the storytelling is immersive and compelling. The Kate Burkholder series is a must-read for anyone who loves smart, gripping mysteries with wonderful characters, emotional depth, and incredible writing. This newest novel in the series comes with my highest highest recommendation!!!!

I want to extend a huge thank you to NetGalley, Linda Castillo, and St. Martin's Press | Minotaur Books for gifting me the ARC of RAGE! I so appreciate you trusting me with an honest review!! It was a privilege to be able to read the newest novel in one of my favorite book series before publication.

Good mystery. And while Kate is an intelligent police chief, in this story I felt she should have figured out what the big picture was a lot earlier than she did. There were clues everywhere, some of them very plain for even a non-police officer to see. She seemed a little dense at times.

Living in Painter’s Mill would scare me more than any other crime-ridden place. I mean, how much real awful shit can this poor Amish town handle? But somehow, Kate Burkholder manages to escape another near-death experience. I thought she was a goner in this one (like I usually do). I love Linda’s books so much. She pulls no punches and really gets dark and I love it!

I have been reading this series for years. It is absolutely one of my favorite police procedurals. I look forward to my yearly visit with Chief of Police Kate Burkholder. I have said it before, and I will keep saying it - this series just gets better and better. Number 17 is no different, and it truly earns its five star rating.

This book starts off with a murder. A young Amish man is murdered, and Chief Burkholder is called out to the gruesome scene. There doesn't appear to be a motive, but the Chief has her suspicions. She begins a methodical investigation that goes in a direction that I never saw coming.

I love that Chief Burkholder is so uniquely qualified for this position. As a former member of the Amish community, she understands the community that she serves. The author always takes the time to explain Kate's methods, and I appreciate it. Kate's team and her husband, BCI Agent John Tomasetti, are all here for this one.

"Rage" is the perfect title for this book. If you are a fan of this series, you know that all is not quiet and peaceful in this neck of the woods. Chief Burkholder works hard to bring that peace and quiet. I have read every book in this series, and I highly recommend it. If you love terrific, solid police procedurals, this series is for you.

Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and Minotaur Books for the opportunity to read this one early. This one doesn't release until July 8th, so you have plenty of time to get into this series if you are new. If you are a fan, preorder it now. This series is incredible!
