The Playbook #2

Trick Play

Rate this book
My twin and I knew we were going home to strangers who would be living in our house. I tried to prepare myself, telling myself to be kind and polite. But what I wasn’t prepared for was… her.

Bellamy Clark.

With her long, fiery red hair and the freckles that I couldn’t stop staring at, her curious green eyes felt like they were peering straight into my soul. The first time I saw her, I had to remind myself to breathe.

Within hours of being under the same roof, I found myself wanting to run, though not for reasons I was willing to admit.

One horse ride. That’s all it took. Her laughter, the way she teased me effortlessly…it burrowed deep under my skin, a feeling I couldn’t shake. And before I knew it, I was forgetting every warning my dad had ever given me.
I didn’t care how off-limits she was. I wanted her, every part of her, until I couldn’t remember why I shouldn’t.

For that summer, she was mine.

Until she decided, our parents would never accept us being together.

After all, we were step-siblings now.

SPICE: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Cash and Bellamy did not disappoint. They had me hooked from book one and I could not wait for their story. The tension, the pining, the spice... all of it worked so well. I was kicking my feet and panting over these two. Like they were hot as can be.

Can I just say I love a good step-sibling romance because you know the angst... its going to be angsting. I loved it though, watching them struggle to deny what is right in front of them. And Cash, my grumpy country boy...swoon. Double swoon.

And Bellamy, I love this girl so much. She is such a great FMC and I love every piece of her. And Cash, she was always his weakness and the tension and pining between them, I was a puddle. and absolute puddle.

LA Shaw is hooking me with this whole friend group and I cannot wait for more.

And Bellamy is a force of nature and I really just want to be her friend. This little group is quickly stealing my heart and I can't wait to see what happens next.

This was such a juicy, forbidden romance 😍 The bond between Cash and Bellamy was immediately so strong and amazing. They were each other's soulmates but there were plenty of obstacles in their way.

I was feeling all the emotions while reading this as we learned about Bellamy and Cash's traumatic pasts. The fact that they were there for each other and helped each other heal, made me love them even more.

The found family aspect was on point, per usual! 👏 I'm super excited for Mavericks book and I realllllly hope Hudson gets one!

The only reason I didn't get it a 5 ⭐️ was, while I understand that Bellamy told Cash to move on since they couldn't be together, I didn't like that he did it so publicly and in her face, even after learning about why he did it. It just made me feel icky and so bad for Bellamy.

Cash babyyyy. I have been feral for this book since we met him in Replay. But also because of Bellamy too because she just has some boss ass bitch energy and I am here for it. Also, step siblings? Sign me TF up please. This book has me feeling all sorts of emotions. We finally get more background on how Cash & Bellamy met and their history that just makes you fall in love with both of their characters even more. The spicy moments in this book had me sweating and the sweet moments had me swooning so hard. And some of the things we find out in this book have me so dang excited for the rest of this series!

The found family in this series continues to be top tier. The side characters in this book were on point yet again. Graham will forever be a girls girl and we love him for that. The banter between Bellamy and Mav had me cackling throughout the book so many times. I cannot wait for Mav's book next and that sweet man to get his own HEA.

This book had me feral waiting for it since reading Replay and the wait was so worth it. Bellamy and Cash are everything and nothing short of perfection. LA Shaw has really outdone themselves because I can't get enough of this world!!

you get their backstory in the first part of the book and we see how they met when their parents began dating and Bellamy and her mom move to Cane Creek Ranch. I loved seeing how their love grew and how they made such a deep connection. But their parents being together puts the brakes on their relationship. In part 2 we pick up with them away at Mountain Ridge University and we see how strained their relationship is. The tension and mutual pining was palpable and you couldn't help but root for these two. Their chemistry is seriously off the charts and the spice was spicing in this book🥵🥵. My favorite part of this book and series so far has been the found family, you can't help but fall in love with each character.

I am frothing at the mouth for Maverick's book!!

Honestly, I have way too many books on my TBR to waste time on something I'm not enjoying. Right from the start, the writing felt rough—bland and immature. The characters are 17 at the beginning, which isn't really something I'm interested in reading right now. Maybe if the writing were stronger, I'd be willing to push through, especially since I think they age up later in the story—but I just can't be bothered. Also, I caught wind of some other-woman drama, and that's a hard pass for me.

note : mcs can't be together because they're step siblings, although the Mmc wants to it's the fmc that broke things off.
3 years later mmc still wants her and is waiting for her BUT because we can't have nice things, of course he has to have a gf whom he cheats on with the fmc

Trick Play is book two in the Playbook Series and features Bellamy and Cash. I have been patiently waiting for Cash’s story ever since reading Replay and it truly didn’t disappoint. This hockey romance is full of tension, angst drama and is set over many years as we learn about the history of Cash and Bellamy, two step siblings. I loved how perfect they were for each other and especially the relationship they both have with Maverick, I hope we get his story next. I loved the returning characters and learning about what they are up to. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and the whole series. I can’t wait for the next instalment in The Playbook Series. I received a complementary copy from Chasing Books PR.

Okay Cash and Bellamy are my fave LA Shaw couple. I knew I’d be obsessed from the little bits we got from them in Replay — they just have such emotional depth and some swoony moments I’ll be thinking about for a long time. If you like a man down bad, a feisty FMC, found family and a low key crazy plot twist this book is for you.

As always LA Shaw writes fantastic spice but truly what I loved most is the deep connection Cash and Bellamy have. And Cashes protective streak I ate up and left no crumbs. I wish I could read another 500 pages of these two. But a reread will have to do 😍

Trick Play is a forbidden romance, with a hockey playing cowboy that falls for his stepsister. You can expect a little drama, beautiful friendships and a heartwarming second chance.

Cash and Bellamy were soon to be step siblings, but their chemistry was instant. They tried to fight their connection but it was just too strong. Their circumstances didn’t make it easy on them and in true LA Shaw fashion they had to crush my heart first before putting me back together.

Y’all I was not expecting this wild ride. Getting these two to their HEA was not without its struggles. We had some other woman drama which I didn’t love, but I did love witnessing the rekindling between Cash and Bella. You could tell from the moment they met they were END GAME. The spark between these two was immediate and the time apart didn’t change that.

“Did you know the first day I saw you in the kitchen, I had to remind myself to breathe?” This is just one example of Cash being an absolute dreamboat. I loved his character and how much he opened up. Did I think he could’ve done a bit more to keep Bella? Yes. Do I love him less for it? Nope.

Now, Bellamy on the other hand… I did like her character and her fire but man did I want to shake some sense into her… girl had it so good & then she just demolished it. It broke my heart for them.

Overall, I did enjoy this story and I loveeed the depth of Cash’s character and I loved the two of them together. One little thing I struggled with was the reason for their second chance. When I’m reading a second chance the reasoning behind the break up really needs to convince me it was worth the heartbreak and this one just didn’t do it.

I am so excited for Mav’s book and the rest of the series! Thank you LA Shaw for the opportunity to read and review this advanced copy.

As soon as I heard Cash is hockey player AND a cowboy, I was sold! I was so excited for this couple while reading Replay.

💛 College romance
🏒 Hockey player
🤠 Cowboy/girl - ranch setting
💕 Step siblings
❤️‍🩹 PTSD & mental health rep
⏪ It’s always been you
💔 Second chance romance

The step siblings dynamic added the perfect amount of forbidden sneaking around! I loved the input and teasing from Cash’s twin brother Mav regarding the relationship between Cash and Bellamy.

I don’t love other woman drama and I think that was probably my biggest setback here as well as not connecting very much with Bellamy as a character.

I thought the PTSD and mental health rep was beautifully portrayed and loved how it brought this couple closer together.

The spice?? That panty scene and hotel room moment were SPIIIIICY and I absolutely could not get enough of the tension and both of the character’s dirty talk.

Overall I would recommend for anyone who enjoys the listed tropes because this was a fun and sweet read!

Thank you so much to LA Shaw and their team for the opportunity to arc read Trick Play!

This book had no plot line just two step siblings wanting to be together.

I wish I had dnf it. It was jumpy had no structure and just got fed bits and pieces that were no longer relevant?

Thought I’d fuck around and find out by reading a step siblings trope but it’s for sure not for me.

Grateful for the ARC

Okay Cash, I see you👀 Cowboy AND hockey player - what’s not to love? And Bellamy was so cute too, we stan a strong FMC with a growth plot.

This book was all of the forbidden romance tension, that the first in this series built it to be. The first part really got me invested in their romance as step-siblings, and was too emotionally invested by the point of the break-up💔 but wasn’t mad - it made sense. When they come back together, I mostly loved that Mav was their biggest cheerleader - but absolutely found myself cheering for them too.

I adored all of the side characters and the found family elements of this especially with Hudson and Mav. I’m so hyped for Mav’s story, but am now not sure I am emotionally stable enough to find out about Hudson.

If you love a good found family, with a sprinkle of hockey and ranch life - I would highly recommend this story. L.A. Shaw have smashed it out the park, thank you so much for my ARC copy🫶🏼

Fave Quote - “I forgot what happiness felt like. It’s like I’ve been living on a cloud of suppressed emotions and memories for the last year and a half. Until Bellamy Ann Clark infiltrated my every waking thought.”

I read book one and I loved it, so I immediately signed up for an ARC of this book, and I'm so happy that I got it!

Bellamy and Cash are so sweet together, their relationship in the past is so sweet and cozy, when their parents get married and they actually became step-siblings they have to let each other go, and I was so sad for them, seeing them find their way back to each other was a fun ride.

I loved all the side characters, and I want everyone mentioned in this book to have their own HEA, the found family in this book and between all of them is beautiful.

The only thing that I didn't like was that Cash had a girlfriend, I would have preferred to have him pinning alone over Bellamy for the time that they were apart, instead of in a relationship, and then the whole drama with that just seemed unnecessary.

I'm really looking forward to the next books, and I really hope Hud gets a book too.

We meet Maverick and Cash, twins who head home for the summer to see their parents. Their father, Cal introduces them to his girlfriend, Andrea and her daughter, Bellamy
All three will start high school in the fall. Their dad owns a ranch where the boys ride horses. They all head to Gigi and Papaw’’s house for dinner. Cash and Bellamy go out for a ride when Bellamy asks about 4 wheelers and those trails.
Cash quickly changes the subject and Andrea; Bellamy’s mom explains that Cash and Maverick's sister Jules passed away in an accident.
The characters in both books have my heart. That epilogue was absolutely incredible. Can't wait for book 3

👀👀 L.A. Shaw….we need a chat. Everytime you put out a new book I find myself in shambles and unable to think of anything else. Now you’ve given me a forbidden step sibling trope with hockey AND cowboys? 😩😩😩 I’m just trying to survive in this world…I can’t function when stuff like this is literally setting my kindle on fire. I’M JUST A GIRL! 😭😭😭 No but seriously….I ate this up, licked my plate and asked for more.

We FINALLY get Cash and Bellamys story after getting a sneak peak at them in replay and I was kicking my feet with excitement because YES!!! I loved seeing how their story started with meeting at the age of 17 when Bellamy and Her mom move in with Cash and his dad…Bellamy is POSITIVE this is just another relationship for her mom and they will be out sooner or later. Which is perfect because she’s starting to develop feelings for the infuriatingly handsome Cash….but when things get serious and Bellamys mom marries Cash’s dad, Bellamy brings them to a complete stop. Ending things before they get any deeper and leaving Cash confused, angry and heartbroken.

I loved the time skips…seeing where they were vs where they are. I loved that this slow burn was over 4 years. Seeing Bellamy fighting her feelings for Cash…her jealousy and pain at watching him get into another relationship. The pain they BOTH felt at being apart and fighting against something they both wanted and wouldn’t allow themselves to have…more so Bellamy. Cash was all in but Bellamy was too scared to cross that line………until they did. And let me tell you…the f it moment was epic…hot…spicy…all the feels and tension.

These two were meant for each other. And when they finally give in it’s everything and more. Cash is filthy in the best way ways. The spice was spicing and I could not get enough. Both Cash and Bellamy had gone through so much in life at such a young age…they both were broken and guarded…I loved how they found peace in each other and were able to let their guards down and just be real with each other.

The found family aspect was so perfect…L.A. Shaw has this way of writing side characters that you can’t help but fall in love with just as much as the main characters. And Maverick?? That man is my new obsession 😂 the relationship between him and Bellamy was so fun. The way they laughed and joked…it was a real bond and I loved seeing it because they both really needed and deserved it.

I absolutely adore L.A. Shaw….I love this book and these characters…I’ll be impatiently waiting for Mavericks story 👀👀😂❤️

They’ve done it again!! L.A Shaw have taken my heart and bended it to their will because honestly they could write about the process of paint drying on the back of a napkin and I’ll EAT IT UP! I got this ARC this morning at 8am and I finished by 6pm… I abandoned all, I damn near forgot I was a whole ass mom for a minute because whew I could NOT put this down!

I can’t even handle the fact that it’s over, I already need more!

I already fell in love with Cash and Bellamy in Replay but Trick Play was everything I hoped for and then some! FINALLY KNOWNG WHAT THE FIGHT WAS ABOUT AT NATHAN’S PARTY HAD ME SCREAMING!!! Bellamy is THAT b*tch! I love her so much and relate to her in so many ways!

This story about step-siblings could have gone so many different ways and to be honest it could have fell flat if not done properly but L.A Shaw blew it out the park per usual! I mean not only was this cowboy x cowgirl which added a fun and nostalgic element but he’s also a hockey player ?! I mean cmon! Finally getting their full story was messy but so beautiful at the same time and baby the SPICE!! WHEW 😮‍💨😮‍💨🥵🥵😩😩
Loved the tension and yearning and most of all the pangs of jealousy ahhhhh!!! I love a down bad man and Y’ALL aren’t even ready!!!!!

The dynamic of all the characters always leaves me so enthralled because it makes me anticipate their stories without taking away from the current one and the whole time I’m just wishing I could jump in and be a part of this friend group; found family through and through!

Something else that made this such an emotional and nostalgic read were all the references (the horse names, the movie AHH) and that both main characters experienced heavy tragedies in their own ways adding even more layers to their complicated relationship! I will never experience a thunderstorm or watching F&F the same way again because it’s always been special to me too !! 😩 I literally felt like I was sitting front row for real witnessing all their ups and downs. I laughed, I cried, I screamed, I wanted to pull my hair out, and then I finally sighed in relief at what was the ride of this emotional rollercoaster! The extra surprises we got were so fun! Can I just say I LOVE The Howler? Consider me SUBSCRIBED!

There’s so much I can say and I’ll probably come back and add more after I process some more but all this yapping to say I love all these characters so much and how we still get glimpses of side characters throughout always makes me smile. I never want to step out of Mountain Ridge!

YALL!!! This book. Did I actually devour it in two days? ABSOLUTELY 💘

This honestly had me in a way I really wasn’t expecting but yep I AM FERAL!!

Like the plot, the characters, the vibes ahhhh YOU STOP THIS RIGHT NEOW. Too good. Too addictive.

Everything in this had my attention on full mode. I found myself itching to pick it up whenever I didn’t have it with me.

Just those tropes alone!!

• forced proximity
• found family
• second chance-ish
• he holds her through thunderstorms
• wears her birthday on his jersey

This was so damn cute!

I was drawn to Bellamy & Cash while reading Replay and I was so pumped for their book.

I really enjoyed getting the backstory on how they came into each other’s lives. The attraction and mutual pining was instant between these two. There was so much sneaking around and not fully giving into each other which created so much tension. Fast forward to their college days, it was def filled with more tension and obstacles they had to face. But in the end, their HEA was so beautiful.

Another great read by my girls, LA Shaw. Thank you so much babes for this ARC. I cannot wait for Mav’s story!!

Trick Play was a very sweet, back and forth, up and down romance. I absolutely loved the angst and you could definitely feel it coming from both of them. I love how Bellamy was able to break Cash out of his Mr.
Serious/tough exterior and allow him to feel safe enough to open up to her and trust her, and even become sexy, flirty, and grace us with a few smiles.
Bellamy was so unapologetically herself. I admired her confidence, her take no crap attitude. Their family, especially GiGi and PawPaw, were so much fun to read and experience. Their home sounds like a dream come true. Overall, a very sweet, sexy, and at times, serious and deep, romance.

Cash and Bellamy? I’m obsessed. This forbidden, step-sibling romance had me pining right alongside them from stolen glances on the ranch to dorm room tension that could melt a hockey rink. Bellamy is the definition of “do not act on my feelings,” while Cash is quietly, devastatingly all in. Their push and pull is full of emotional depth, sweet moments, and eventually, a slow burn that goes full inferno.

The book delivers on some seriously swoony vibes, found family, banter that bites, and enough horse and cowboy content to make your heart gallop. Maverick (Cash’s twin) is the unexpected scene stealing MVP with his humor and loyalty, and the entire friend group makes this small town meets college setting feel rich and real.

Where it fumbles a bit: some choppy time jumps made the timeline hard to follow, the Tori storyline just felt unnecessary and the big taboo reveal didn’t quite get the payoff it deserved. Also… please, for the love of the Zamboni, learn how hockey works and the correct terminology.

That said, if you’re into forbidden romance with heart, heat, and a side of cowboy chaos, Trick Play is a wild ride worth taking. Can someone please put Mav in the lineup next? I’m ready.

Swoony Line:

“Don’t regret this. Don’t regret me…again. Please.”

This was my first step sibling trope and I found it enjoyable. You can’t help who you love 🤷🏾‍♀️
With that being said, I do feel that the story lacked a bit. I feel like so much of it was skipped over with the fast forwards that we missed out on significant parts.

I did love getting to know more about Cash and Bellamy, especially after getting glimpses of them in Replay.

So thankful that I was given an arc..but being a 30 year old reading about 17year olds just isn’t it for me. I probably could have over looked it bc yes they are older later in the book, but I did not enjoy this writing style at all. It felt jumpy and like there was no actual plot other than step siblings wanting to be together.- the fmc was insufferable, she chose no to be with the mmc then got mad when he was with someone else for a time.

💥 Trigger Warning
🖤 M/F
🏒 Hockey Romance [ish]

Bellamy and Cash meet due to their parents falling in love. This is your typical Step Siblings trope, we cant be together cause society and our parents will think its wrong is the basis of Bellamy & Cashs story once their parents get engaged. Cash doesnt want to give up, but Bellamy needs to fall on her sword and do the "right" thing.

Year after year we see Bellamy and Cash torturing themselves in college having to stay a part but still clearly madly in love...though seeing other people 🙄 This might have been the part where I rolled my eyes so hard at Cash's reasoning that they almost got stuck in my head 🤷‍♀️ But you know, how underdeveloped the frontal lobe is at that point. Eventually we see Bellamy pulls her head out of the clouds.

This book had a good amount of depth for what I thought was going to be a kinda fluffy Hockey Romance. There are a few triggers in the book, so I recommend reading that warning if you have any triggers.

I still definitely had some mixed feelings about the beginning of this book, even if I liked the book overall. Basically, if you feel weird reading about teenagers that are still in HS, engaging in some spicy interactions, you will need to basically skip the whole beginning of the book. I didnt realize that the book started with the MC's meeting Summer of Senior year, and as a someone in my thirties it just didnt sit with me. To each their own, and if thats cool with you, read this book! But I figured I would mention this so if others feel that way, they are more aware.

Cash is not the biggest fan of knowing that his dad's new girlfriend and her daughter will move in with them. What he wasn’t prepared for was her. Bellamy. Even though he tries to keep his distance they spent more and more time together becoming friends and some more. But then Bellamy decided that they could never be together.

Trick Play is book 2 in the The Playbook Series. It’s a standalone in an interconnected series and can therefore be read independently. It’s my first book by L.A. Shaw and I gotta say it wohn’t be my last.

I loved how we directly dive into the story with Bellamy and her mom moving in, Cash seeing her for the first time and that’s it for him. And it keeps getting better from that point on. The little hot and cold Cash is keeping up because he’s battling his own feelings. Their banter, their deep conversations, them getting to know each other. I loved that so much. Then came the turning point in the story and I was devastated. Therefore the middle part of the book was quite hard for me to get through because I was just always asking “why”. I struggled with Cash and his decisions and also with Bellamy but in the end there’s a bit of suspense and that made me understand the middle part better. I honestly also fell in love with Mav and I can’t wait to read his story. I also liked their whole group of friends and the love story even though I got to admit I’m usually not the girl for the trope step-siblings.

4/5 ⭐️ - on to Mavs story now 😍

*ARC REVIEW*

I’m such a sucker for forbidden romance and hockey romances but adding in a cowboy and ranches? Oh baby.

This story had me tears from the first few pages and ended with me in tears too - automatic 5. Not only did I love this story, but I loved the traumatic connection and emotional impact it had on me. I fully respect giving us the triggers at the beginning of books - this let me breathe through before I started reading because I knew I would be affected by loss of a sibling.

My favorite thing about this story, was that Cash and Bella both had someone to hold them through their emotional journey. Going through something traumatic like Bella did, and losing someone like Cash did… you need someone so strong to hold you together. They both had the safe space to talk about their feelings and really love in the pain and let it out. I wish I could not relate to that, but I can on so many levels. I had more in common with Cash than I care to admit.

The banter between Mav and Bella was so fun and funny to listen to but I love the friendship they both gave each other. I just loved Bella and Cash’ relationship so much and I want more! I can’t wait to see them in Mav’s story and for him to get his HEA ❣️

*this story spoke to me more because of the release date - I needed more of that closure. Thank you L.A. Shaw.

Cash and Bellamy take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. The first time they lay eyes on each other is when Bellamy and her mom move in with Cash, his twin Maverick and their dad on the ranch he grew up on. Closed off to this big change Cash keeps to himself working with the horses on the ranch. Bellamy wants to be helpful and try to fit into this new life she’s been thrown into. With a love of horses herself she starts working at the stables and little by little Cash lets her in. Unable to understand how or why, Cash finds himself opening up little by little and feeling things he knows he shouldn’t. When Bellamy does the same and their feelings grow they are faced with what to do until their parents decide for them when they announce they’re getting married.

Cash is willing to fight for them but Bellamy can’t live with herself if it will cause problems for the family so she walks away leaving her heart there…except she never moved on, and although Cash gets a girlfriend two weeks later, the only thing he ever sees is B no matter how hard he tries not to.

This story is about not being able to fight love and fate and finding a way to make it work because facing obstacles is better than facing a life without each other. Their story isn’t easy but it’s worth it.

Congratulations LA Shaw!!
