Principles of Bitcoin presents a holistic, first-principles-based framework for understanding one of the most misunderstood inventions of our time. By stripping away the hype, jargon, and superficial analysis that often surrounds the crypto industry, this book uncovers the true ingenuity behind Satoshi Nakamoto’s creation—and its profound implications for the future of money, governance, and individual freedom.
Vijay Selvam analyzes the technology, economics, politics, and philosophy of Bitcoin, making the case that only through this holistic understanding can we gain an appreciation of its true meaning and significance. Readers are invited to consider Bitcoin as a tool for individual empowerment, a catalyst for economic autonomy, and a challenge to traditional monetary systems. Selvam demonstrates why Bitcoin stands alone in the digital asset space as a path-dependent once-in-history invention that cannot be replicated.
Principles of Bitcoin is an invaluable resource for professionals in the financial world seeking a rigorous and accessible understanding of Bitcoin. Students, curious thinkers, and all who find the technology daunting will also benefit from its clear, foundational approach. Equipping readers with the tools to grasp the many facets of Bitcoin, this book is an ideal guide to exploring its role in shaping a more decentralized, transparent, and equitable future.
This book is excellent. It is different from any other Bitcoin/crypto book (I have read most) in terms of how comprehensive it is. It is easy to understand, engaging and offers deeply insightful historical perspectives. For a newcomer to Bitcoin this is the absolute best resource out there.
Bitcoin from First Principles: A Holistic Understanding
I’ve been a Bitcoiner since 2016 and have read countless books on the subject. However, few — if any — capture the essence of Bitcoin as clearly as this one. Its approach, grounded in Aristotelian principles and a holistic understanding of the phenomenon, allows us to see Bitcoin not merely as a technology, but as a philosophical, economic, and political revolution. It is precisely this first-principles perspective — rather than technical or financial simplifications — that is needed to truly grasp what Bitcoin represents for the future of humanity.
What impressed me most was the depth and balance of this book. It explains Bitcoin as a system shaped by incentives and constraints, not as a trend or ideology. The theory is consistent and easy to follow without being simplified. I appreciated how it encouraged critical thinking instead of telling readers what to believe. This feels like a book written to last, not to chase attention. got my attention to the marketing
This is one of those books that quietly reshapes your understanding. The ideas unfold logically, building a strong theoretical foundation without unnecessary complexity. It avoids emotional language and focuses on explaining why Bitcoin exists and how it functions within larger economic and political systems. By the end, I felt more informed and more thoughtful, not overwhelmed. A serious and rewarding read
Nice survey of Bitcoin. Good for the beginner or expert of Bitcoin. I particularly liked Chapter 2, "Bitcoin and money" and Chapters 17-21 about the philosophy of Bitcoin.
This book is the most complete and thorough analysis of Bitcoin that exists. It is written in an engaging, fun and accessible style. Everyone should read this.
"Principles of Bitcoin" by Vijay Selvam offers a comprehensive, first-principles-based framework for understanding Bitcoin.
While accessible to beginners, its value truly shines for those more advanced who are looking to refine their arguments and beliefs.
Selvam delves into the technology, economics, politics, and philosophy of Bitcoin, presenting a decidedly pro-Bitcoin perspective, making it less of a balanced view and more of a philosophical exploration of Bitcoin's potential.
Best book on Bitcoin that is out there. An incredibly comprehensive analysis of this difficult to understand and elusive topic. Also found some very original perspectives. The book is unique and unprecedented in its first principles based description of Bitcoin. This kind of analysis has been much lacking in the industry - the confusion of Bitcoin with "crypto" has been the biggest culprit. This book is the best resource to understand why Bitcoin is unique and why it is the future reserve asset of the world.
This book approaches Bitcoin with refreshing seriousness and intellectual discipline. Instead of hype or price talk, it focuses on first principles, connecting technology, economics, politics, and philosophy into a coherent framework. The arguments are clear, well-structured, and grounded in logic rather than speculation. It challenged how I think about money and systems. A thoughtful, carefully reasoned work that rewards slow, attentive reading.
Best book in existence on Bitcoin. Nothing comes close in providing a holistic and comprehensive introduction. This is THE book if you're a newcomer to Bitcoin. Perfect textbook that schools should use as prescribed reading.
Principles of Bitcoin is the perfect starting point for anyone new to Bitcoin — it's clear, accessible, and breaks down complex concepts without overwhelming the reader. At the same time, crypto enthusiasts will find rich insights and analysis that go far beyond the basics. Vijay strikes a rare balance here: the book is both beginner-friendly and intellectually rich, making it a great read for all levels of experience. It is a must read for anyone serious about understanding not just how Bitcoin works, but why it was revolutionary and how it stands apart from every cryptocurrency that followed.
