Erin Delaney is just settling into her new life in Sanctuary, and enjoying her friendship with local Police Chief Adrian Nightengale, when she discovers that a serial killer is imitating murders from crime novels - and their latest murder is straight out of Erin's book Dark Matters. Heading to Virginia with rescue border collie Chester in tow, she goes to stay with Erin's friend, ex-FBI profiler Kaely Quinn-Hunter and her husband Noah, who works with the BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit). To add to Erin's worries about the 'Novel Killer', a phone call from her agent tells her that her publisher has received a claim that the plots of Erin's novels were stolen - and they want to be paid off or they threaten to take the matter to court. While Erin struggles with her anxiety in Virginia, Adrian soon notices strange goings-on back at Erin's home in Sanctuary and the situation escalates alarmingly.
This is a genuinely tense thriller with plenty of complications to keep the reader intrigued. The situation with the claim of plagarism is well dealt with and well worked into the wider plot. Although suspicious of the murderer's motives quite early on, I didn't peg them as the killer, and that's down to the author's skill at creating her story's threads and keeping the twists and turns coming! She cleverly placed several red herrings along the way. 😁
There's a lot of Christian content in this novel, which is rightly categorised as Christian Suspense. Overall, this is well placed within the action, but with a brief scene involving an evil spirit, a detailed 'conversion prayer' element, and distinct notes on hearing God's voice, this is definitely a novel for the Christian reader. My only personal discomfort involved the dying conversion, which didn't feel likely to me but perhaps I am just a bit cynical.
A genuine page-turner with plenty of spiritual depth and character development and a fabulous plot with bonus sub-plot, I read this in big chunks and am desperate to read the next one in the series. And not only because I'm curious as to whether Kaely's sudden taste for Mallomars may have a deeper reason than simply discovering her friend's favourite sweet treat.
