Rediscover the joy of Christmas with these faith-based historical romances from bestselling authors featuring sweet Western frontier stories with themes of marriage of convenience, forced proximity, and friends-to-more.
Tracie Peterson is a bestselling author who writes in both historical and contemporary genres. Her novels reveal her love for research as well as her strong desire to develop emotionally meaningful characters and stories for her readers. Tracie and her family live in Montana.
This was a good collection of Christmas novellas centered around the Nativity story. Each one had something unique and different. Novella #1: The Shepherd's Heart by Tracie Peterson - 5 Stars
Loved this one so much. On the western frontier in 1875, we see a widowed sheep rancher with his children, Vincent Duran. He needs a mother for his two children after losing his wife and other children. He and his remaining two children have been through so much grief. Angel Lewis agrees to marry him, a marriage of convenience if you will. They brace a winter storm and find love again. I loved seeing Angel walk through the grief with this family together, helping the children understand what happened and about how to trust God even through hardship. Seeing the real meaning behind Christmas on display through the Nativity story was the best too. I have never read a book by Tracie, but now I have to check out her books!
Novella #2: No Room at the Inn by Misty M. Beller - 4 Stars
Also on the western frontier but in 1861, Hope and her brother run an inn. A blizzard forces everyone to stay at Hope's home, where a romantic interest occurs between Hope and Noah. Everyone literally has "no room at the inn" and they have to figure out how to all stick together during this storm. Meaning of Christmas is shared and we have very much a Pioneer tale at Christmastime.
Novella #3: A Star in the West by Karen Witemeyer 4.5 Stars
This one is set in Waco, TX in 1890. This one had a "3 wise man" and a "baby" storyline. A thread of Christmas redemption in Christ too that I really enjoyed. Frank is a Harvard Math Professor who comes to Waco and meets Stella. He is socially awkward and she doesn't see herself as she should. They interact a lot together and there was also some fun humor was in this one too but the ending had serious topics involved and a mention of a brothel / women working at the brother but the redemption in Christ is shown in the situation.
Overall, this is a great collection that is going to be a good one for the Christmas season, especially to my friends who appreciate good Christian content in their Christmas novellas.
Thank you to Bethany House for a complimentary copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts are my own.
All three novellas are inspired by the Nativity story.
The Shepherd's Heart by Tracie Peterson (Nebraska and Wyoming 1875) My heart jumped for joy at the "old maid" who thinks she'll never find true love, finding it.
No Room at the Inn by Misty M Beller (Nebraska Territory/current day Wyoming 1861) When an unexpected blizzard leads to an innkeeper and businessman getting to know each other...
A Star in the West by Karen Witemeyer (Texas 1890) Loved the geeky math professor hero, mathematical analogies, history and bits of humor.
A gift of a collection by three talented authors.
My gratitude to publisher Bethany House and Celebrate Lit for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
If you are looking for a Christmas novella collection that is full of great stories and great Christian content, then this is the collection for you! In this collection you get 3 stories!
The Shepard’s Heart by Tracie Peterson -This is a marriage of convenience story that just warms the heart. Angel was jilted at the altar and Vincent is a widower with children. I just loved this story so much! Perfect!
No Room at the Inn by Misty M. Beller -Hope runs an Inn. Noah is escorting a young lady when their party has to stop at the inn due to snowy weather. As they are trapped there Hope and Noah get to know one another and love blossoms. There also is a little mystery of the missing family heirloom. Loved it!
A Star in the West -Frank is a math professor at Harvard. He is a “Wiseman”. He is a bit awkward socially, usually prefers his numbers but has been lonely lately. He is hoping to court a woman he has been writing to, Stella. Stella thinks she is unattractive. She is nervous that Frank is coming. I thought Stella and Frank were so cute. I really enjoyed this story!
I really appreciated the strong Christian content in all three of these stories. I definitely recommend this collection! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
The magic of historical Christmas stories strike again!
There is something about the slow way of Christmas, the simplicity in which they showed up for each other, the way to TRUE meaning of why we celebrate was such a focal point. They always warm my heart!
And this novella collection was a great addition to the market! I was transported into the lives of people who found love during the most magical season, who relied on the Lord to work out situations that seemed impossible, and celebrated the real reason for the season.
Tracie, Misty, and Karen brought the magic of Christmas to life with the sweetest of Christmas stories in each of their signature ways!
*I received this book from the publisher**All options are my own*
Three novellas. Three voices. One Savior whose birth still changes everything.
Each story carried the warmth of Christmas and the wonder of the Nativity, like candlelight in the dark, steady and glowing with hope and promise. The words spoke of living differently because of Jesus: “When we live a life for Jesus, people notice that we’re different. When we are forgiving and kind when others deserve our anger, the light shines.” That truth belongs at the heart of every season, but it feels especially bright at Christmas!
There’s also the steady witness of faith that endures: “My faith has seen me through many difficult times.” A simple confession, yet strong enough to carry the weight of a lifetime.
And the reminder that lifts the whole collection: “Her heart overflowed with gratitude for the gift of Jesus, for the love and truth He bestowed during His life, for the grace and salvation He offered in His death, and the triumph and hope manifested at His resurrection. This was the good news of Christmas.”
Romantic and tender, yet always pointing back to Christ, these novellas invite us to slow down, remember, and rejoice in the true miracle of Christmas.
Perfect for readers who love historical romance, stories that stir the heart, and Christmas tales that clearly celebrate the Savior’s birth.

Story Enjoyment Rating: 8/10 Christian Faith Rating: 3/3 On a Midnight Clear by Tracie Peterson, Misty M. Beller, and Karen Witemeyer is a collection of three historical Christian Christmas novellas. The first story, “The Shepherd’s Heart” by Tracie Peterson, follows Angel, who is abandoned by her fiancé just before their wedding. An older friend encourages her to consider marrying her childhood friend, a widower who needs help caring for his children. Though the timeline is short, it explores grief, second chances, and learning to trust God again after deep heartbreak.
The second novella, “No Room at the Inn” by Misty M. Beller, centres on Hope and her brother Martin, who run a small inn for stagecoach travellers in a remote location. During a harsh winter storm, a stranded stage leaves several guests trapped at the inn, including Noah, the woman he is escorting to her father, and a stage driver who falls ill. As Hope and Noah are drawn together through the crisis, romance quickly develops, along with important life decisions. This story blends sweet Christian romance with strong faith elements and a touch of mystery, all set against a snowy wilderness backdrop.
The final tale, “A Star in the West” by Karen Witemeyer, follows Stella, whose father connects her with Frank, a Harvard professor close to her age. After developing a close relationship through letters, Frank arrives in her town to give lectures, and they finally meet in person. Both feel insecure and assume the other may not be attracted to them, yet a strong connection quickly forms. Frank approaches relationships analytically, treating love like an experiment as he weighs his career ambitions against his growing feelings for Stella. This story offers a sweet romance with a Christmas theme that unfolds more fully by the end.
The strong faith elements are what truly made this collection stand out. Although the historical settings were outside my usual comfort zone, I thoroughly enjoyed all three stories.
On a Midnight Clear is a collection of Christmas-themed novellas. I've read several books by all three authors, so I was excited for this one.
This is a sweet collection that will leave you in the Christmas spirit. All three books feature faith, which I, of course, always appreciate, and the romance is gentle and tender. I enjoyed the familial themes in all three stories, and each author's distinct writing style brings something special to the collection.
I don't agree with some of the theology in the first story, which has God literally speaking to a character through a dream. But, otherwise, this was an enjoyable collection. As a reader who grew up reading Barbour's historical romance collections, books of this sort have a special place in my heart, especially books about Christmas and our Savior's birth.
For readers of sweet and wholesome Christian historical romance, this is another book to add to your TBR.
*I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley in conjunction with the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own and a positive review was not required.
Three stories of Christmas on the western frontier in the 1800s. 1. The Shepherd's Heart- Tracie Peterson Nebraska 1875 Angel's future is unknown after her fiancé leaves her at the altar. Vincient, a widower with two small children, is floundering in his grief and can't seem to take care of his children the way he would like. The story touched my heart. It was heartbreaking, but redemption and God's love had an answer. The characters were great, and I was captivated by them from the beginning, especially the children. I loved the ending and the Christian theme.
2. No Room at the Inn- Misty Beller Nebraska Territory (future Wyoming) 1861 Hope and her brother, Martin, run a stage stop and inn. A storm brings strangers stranded along with the stagecoach driver, who is injured. Hope is very caring as she tries her best to guard her heart. But God has something planned for her. Great ending.
3. A Star in the West-Karen Witemeyer Waco, Texas 1890 Stella Barrington doesn't have a good opinion about herself, and she feels she will be a spinster for the rest of her life. She takes care of her aging father, but also, on his suggestion, writes to one of his friends, a mathematics professor, Frank Stentz. All is good until he arrives at their home. It seems God has other plans. There is also humor, which made me laugh.
The story has some twists I didn't see coming. The ending was beautiful-it made me cry.
A wonderful collection that will bring Christmas into your heart, reminding you of the most important reason to celebrate Christmas. Loved all three. Inspirational and uplifting.
3.5 stars. I enjoyed the first story the most, followed by the third. I found the second story to drag on and did not enjoy it. Although, I did enjoy the blizzardy conditions in the second story. All three were very Chrissmasy and definitely infused with faith and hope! I did not at all enjoy this audiobook narrator.
This sweet and cozy collection of novellas will put you in the mood for Christmas! The three novellas are stand alone stories and not connected to each other aside from their Christmas themed focus.
The Shepherd’s Heart by Tracie Peterson was a marriage of convenience story with such a sweet female main character. I loved the way Angel cared for Vincent and his children, all while knowing that she did not have their love. So, when that changed and love began to grow, it made it extra special.
No Room at the Inn by Misty M. Beller was a forced proximity story as travelers found themselves snowed in together. I appreciated the way Noah turned to prayer and Bible reading to help him decide what path to follow for his heart and the feelings that were growing for Hope.
A Star in the West by Karen Witemeyer was the story of two pen pals who fell for each other through the letters they exchanged. Yet, they were both nervous and unsure about each other’s feelings once they met in person. It was so sweet to see Stella and Frank give each other their hearts.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
On a Midnight Clear is a collection of three faith-filled Christmas novellas inspired by the Nativity story, all set on the Western frontier and woven with hope, love, and quiet moments of God’s grace. And can we just take a moment to admire this beautiful cover? ❤️
❄️ The Shepherd’s Heart by Tracie Peterson On the frontier, a widowed sheep rancher enters a marriage of convenience in hopes of providing a mother for his children. As a fierce winter storm forces two guarded hearts to rely on one another, faith, perseverance, and unexpected love begin to take root.
🕯️ No Room at the Inn by Misty M. Beller When a traveler and his young charge are snowed in near a crowded stage inn, they find shelter in a barn just days before Christmas. As they work together to recover a missing family heirloom, a season of waiting opens the door to trust, kindness, and growing affection.
⭐️ A Star in the West by Karen Witemeyer What begins as friendly correspondence deepens when a Harvard mathematics professor arrives in Texas, and letters turn into real-life possibilities. As faith, reason, and love intersect, an unexpected dilemma challenges two hearts to trust God’s wisdom over their own understanding.
Together, these stories capture the hope of Christmas while reflecting themes of faith, family, and love on the frontier. If you enjoy short, seasonal reads that are cozy, Christ-centered, and rich with gentle romance, this collection makes a lovely December pick.
Thank you @bethanyhousefiction for my copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.
On A Midnight Clear is a collection of three novellas by three different storytellers. I love Christmas themed stories, and this book offers three delightful faith-filled Nativity-centered tales in one book!
The Shepherd’s Heart by Tracie Peterson I really enjoyed this marriage of convenience story! My heart went out to Vincent, a father of two children who has lost so much, as well as to Angel who changed their lives and hers.
No Room at the Inn by Misty M. Beller Hope and Noah are brought together in a blizzard and it’s just the beginning of their journey and I love how the story closes.

"Can they find a place to put their hearts and hope this Christmas?"
This book is a heartwarming trio of faith-filled Christmas novellas inspired by the Nativity. The gentle romance and snowy settings make it the perfect book to cozy up with during the holiday season. Here's a quick rundown of each novella:
🌟The Shepherd's Heart Widowed sheep rancher Vincent Duran needs a mother for his two young children. Angel Lewis agrees to a marriage of convenience, certain his heart will never truly be hers. When a fierce Wyoming winter storm forces them together, duty and shared hardship slowly begin to heal two broken hearts. This marriage of convenience story that left me teary-eyed.
🌟No Room At the Inn Traveling guardian Noah Bentwood and his young charge are snowed in at a Rocky Mountain stage stop- he's forced to sleep in the barn because the inn is full. When innkeeper Hope Palmer’s cherished family heirloom vanishes, she and Noah team up to recover it before Christmas. As the storm lingers, so do new and unexpected feelings. This forced proximity romance that kept me on my toes.
🌟A Star In the West What began as friendly letters between Texas schoolteacher Stella Barrington and Harvard mathematics professor Frank Stentz takes a surprising turn when he arrives in Waco for a visit. Suddenly faced with the choice between love and logic, they’ll need more than intellect to find their way forward. This friends-to-lovers romance had me giggling.
♥️Read If You Enjoy: • Historical Western romances • Sweet, wholesome love stories • Christmas novellas with gentle faith elements • Winter settings and heartwarming endings
Don’t these little anthologies hit just right sometimes?! I enjoy the quick little pick me up stories once in a while. These stories are set in the late 1800’s in Nebraska, Wyoming and Texas. I enjoy reading romances during that time in the “wild” west feel. The last one wasn’t as much of the Wild West feel, it was a later year in a more settled location, set in a university town. It is kinda romantic to see people working side by side on the rugged terrain. I particularly enjoyed the first and third story. The second one was cute but I’m not a huge fan of the “insta love” so it wasn’t as appealing to me. But it was still well written, that’s just my personal preference.
A great addition to your Christmas collection, I highly recommend this so you have some quick pick me ups! This is available now. Thanks to the authors and @bethanyhousefiction for an advance copy. All opinions are my own.
4.5 stars rounded to 5 for Goodreads. I completely enjoyed this Christmas novella collection. When you pair three of best historical Christian Fiction authors around, the collection is pretty much a sure to be a winner. All three stories were well written and fun reads. My personal favorite of the collection was Karen's. I loved the quirky main characters and the academic setting at historical Baylor in Waco. The Dr. Pepper shoutout was also a fun tie in. Tracie's story was sweet. I loved the brother's best friend storyline and the story overall was a great start to the collection. Misty's story was good. I liked its premise and the characters. All in all, I highly recommend this collection!
Another recommendation for a Christmas read is this multi-author novella anthology. You get three stories in one by authors: Tracie Peterson, Karen Witemeyer and Misty M. Beller and all stories are inspired by the Nativity Story which I thought was rather unique.
The first book is The Shepherd's Heart by Tracie Peterson. I must admit that although I loved them all this was my absolute favorite. This one is a mail order bride of sorts. In this one we meet Vincent who lost his wife and now is left with two small children to take care of and we meet Angel who at one point had a crush on Vincent and now has agreed to be his wife. I loved the faith thread and the way they find love towards each other and recognize that with God anything is possible. I could have read a whole book on these characters!
The second book is No Room at the Inn by Misty M. Beller and that one was sweet ad romantic! We meet Noah who get stuck at this Inn with the charge he has to take back home. While stuck and sleeping in a barn he falls for The innkeeper Hope and vice versa. They were sweet together and I loved how everything wrapped up.
The third book is A Star in the West by Karen Witemeyer. I thought this was sweet and comical. Both characters Stella and Frank are both nerds and super awkward with each other but they still make it work somehow. They have corresponded and gotten to know each other through letters but now they have to get to know each other all over again in real life.
I really enjoyed this collection and I felt like the stories went really quick. I think you will enjoy this if you enjoy historical romance
I received a copy of this book for review. All views expressed are my own.
Sometimes I enjoy stepping back into settings like this and reading very wholesome stories. I swear I lived a past life on the prairies as my heart is drawn to things like this from time to time.
These three stories had such heart. I am typically not a fan of novellas cause it often feels unfinished. These did not have that feel at all. What such lovely stories of faith, grace and love!
(I received a complementary copy of this title. All opinions are my own.)
This year I have absolutely loved reading Christmas novellas! “On a Midnight Clear” is a collection of three Christmas novellas from three incredible Christian historical fiction/romance writers: Tracie Peterson, Misty Beller, and Karen Witmeyer. I have really enjoyed other books by all three of these authors, so I was really excited to read this new novella collection!
These three historical romance novellas are full of faith and Christmas magic, all inspired by the Nativity and set on the Western Frontier in some capacity.
Novellas Included:
“The Shepherd’s Heart” by Tracie Peterson “No Room in the Inn” by Misty Beller “A Star in the West” by Karen Witmeyer
I really enjoyed this title! If you’re looking for clean and faith filled, Christmas novellas with a historical setting, you definitely don’t want to miss this one!
What a delightful Christmas anthology! I enjoyed the plot of each story and loved how the true and spiritual blessing of Christmas shone through in each one. It was a winning medley of novellas with similarities and differences among the three.
The Shepherd’s Heart by Tracie Peterson was a poignant and heartfelt marriage-of-convenience story in which the two main characters had both experienced recent loss but managed to work through their emotions to a beautiful conclusion. I loved the pairing of the heroine’s name, Angel, with the hero Vincent’s profession as a shepherd.
No Room at the Inn by Misty Beller was aptly titled when a blizzard forced the occupants and driver of a stage coach into an extended stay at Hope Palmer’s home, allowing romantic interest to bloom between Hope and passenger Noah Bentwood. Some other happenings during the snowstorm added heightened interest and kept the house’s residents busy in the countdown to Christmas.
A Star in the West by Karen Witemeyer had a different setting, taking place in Texas instead of Nebraska and Wyoming, so snow was not involved. Although no less captivating than the first two novellas, this one read like a historical romantic comedy to me as I found myself laughing out loud numerous times at the use of many examples of mathematical jargon in the thoughts and conversations of the characters. Loved the idea of the “wise men from the east” coming west for an academic symposium. A specific event toward the end of the book was so inspirational and gave witness to the true meaning of Christmas.
I highly recommend this enthralling and faith-based collection of wonderful Christmas stories to brighten your day for the holiday season or any time of year.
This collection of Christmas time novellas by some of my favorite Christian authors is a fun read. I like that the titles each elude to Christ's birth: Shepherds, angels, stars.
Two are set in Wyoming territory, and the third in Texas. The descriptions of Wyoming winter weather is quite realistic, and frankly makes you shiver. Having lived in Montana for a couple decades made it especially easy for me to picture.
Each character in each of the stories is believable. I like how they each grow in faith as they face various challenges.
If you enjoy faith-based Christmas stories, you will definitely want to add this to your TBR list.
Three Christmasy novellas: The Shepherd’s Heart by Tracie Peterson was a heartwarming story of grief and discovered love. Angel is a strong Christian who as a second wife gives love and stability after Vincent loses his wife to disease. Vincent is a shepherd who finds his angel who brings light during a snowstorm. No Room at the Inn by Misty Beller was a cute story about a snowstorm at Christmas which strands passengers from a stage coach at the Inn run by siblings Hope and Martin. A lost item brings Noah closer to Hope and sparks a romance where both seek the will og God. A Star in the West by Karen Witemeyer was my favorite of the three. I loved this nerdy, shy hero who became bold and the spinster wallflower heroine who fell in love through letters exchanged. Stella and Frank loved each other’s heart and put their faith into action on Christmas with a real baby in a manger. Three worthwhile stories that showed love and faith in the Christmas season. *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Bethany House through Celebrate Lit Tours via NetGalley. Travel back to Nebraska in 1875 in The Shepherd’s Heart by Tracie Peterson, the first story in On a Midnight Clear: A 3-in-1 Christmas Novella Collection! Ms. Peterson introduces Readers to a young bride Angel who was jilted at the altar, but is clinging to a promise that God told her she would be married by Christmas. Angel often helps her nearby neighbor, Granny Duran, and confides to Granny Duran what she believed God told her. Granny Duran believes what Angel told her is true and an answer to prayer because she is seeking a wife and mother figure for her widowed grandson, Vincent, a sheep farmer, and his children. Angel grew up with Vincent, and after much prayer decides to marry Vincent and move to Cheyenne. Vincent and Angel come to a mutual agreement that for the moment their marriage will be one of convenience. Angel looks at her marriage to Vincent as an assignment from God. While happy to do it, in secret, Angel has trouble adjusting to a new place and connecting to most of her new family. As loneliness encompasses Angel, she depends on her Faith like never before, shining the Light of Christ to the family God entrusted her with.
When I read a story by the great Tracie Peterson, especially a Christmas story, I know it will be golden and soaked in God’s Truth! This is definitely true of The Shepherd’s Heart! I love the characters and the plot of The Shepherd’s Heart! I love that Angel heard from God and thought that it was bold of Ms. Peterson to include it in the plot. I admire Angel for all that she sacrificed on behalf of Vincent and his children. I love how Angel interacted with the children, having an understanding of what the children were going through because she lost her mother when she was a young child too. I love how Angel taught the children about Jesus and the Bible and how she prayed for them. I love how Angel answered the children’s questions honestly. I love that Vincent allowed God to keep his heart tender towards Angel when it came to her wellbeing and letting Angel know how grateful he was for her. I love that when God gave Vincent a heart check on things, Vincent took it to heart and did his best to change. The Shepherd’s Heart is a great story that shows us that Following God’s Leading is not always easy, but He is with us every step of the way, touching people’s lives along the way! I’m so thankful that The Shepherd’s Heart by Tracie Peterson was included in the On a Midnight Clear: A 3-in-1 Christmas Novella Collection!
No Room at the Inn by Misty M. Beller
No Room at the Inn by Misty M. Beller is the second story in On a Midnight Clear: A 3-in-1 Christmas Novella Collection and takes place in the Nebraska Territory in the 1860s. No Room at the Inn tells the story of Hope and her brother, Martin, who run an inn at the local stagecoach stop. With a few days to go before Christmas, Hope is working hard to get the inn ready for their next guests. Hope is excited for the new guests to arrive, she just wishes she could offer them better accommodations after a bunk house gets damaged. As their guests, Ellen and her escort Noah, arrive a snowstorm follows at their heels, stranding everyone for days. The Stagecoach Driver arrives injured, causing Hope to nurse him back to health. As everyone helps Hope, they all begin to know each other better. When Noah sees Hope for the very first time, he is smitten—even more so as he gets to know Hope better. Hope was attracted to Noah instantly, but she knows it would not go anywhere. However, when Noah asks Hope to pray about a relationship with him, Hope allows True Hope to rise within her.
No Room at the Inn by Misty M. Beller continues the Christmas feel in the On a Midnight Clear: A 3-in-1 Christmas Novella Collection. I love meeting the Characters. I loved how all of the Characters worked together to help and take care of one another during the snowstorm. I love how Hope was not ashamed of who she was and her humble upbringing and that Noah was the same way. I love how Hope and Noah took their feelings realistically and seriously, not letting their feelings guide them entirely. I love how much Noah went to God’s Word often in the story. I love how Noah wasn’t afraid to tell Hope where he stood with her. Most of all, I love how Noah Prayerfully sought the Lord’s Will for a further relationship with Hope and that he encouraged Hope to pray too. No Room at the Inn by Misty M. Beller is a sweet addition to the On a Midnight Clear: A 3-in-1 Christmas Novella Collection!
A Star in the West by Karen Witemeyer
The final story in On a Midnight Clear: A 3-in-1 Christmas Novella Collection is a beautiful one set in 1890s Waco, Texas during Christmas time by Karen Witemeyer called A Star in the West. A Star in the West tells the story of Stella, a woman of 28 who has grown up in her mathematician father’s world and has been taking care of her father’s household ever since the death of her mother ten years ago. When Stella’s Father encourages her to correspond with another mathematician named Frank, she happily agrees. Frank and Stella grow close while corresponding. Frank travels from the Massachusetts to Waco for a symposium, surprising Stella in the process. Stella believes that due her age, height, and big feet that Frank will not want to pursue a romantic relationship with her. Frank believes Stella is beautiful just as she is and wants to see where their relationship can go. Frank and Stella continue to bond over shared intellectual pursuits and Faith, but they are unsure if they can move forward without blending their respective lives in Waco and Massachusetts. But what Stella and Frank have is too special to ignore.
I love A Star in the West and the mathematical world mixed with Faith that Karen Witemeyer created! I thought the plot of A Star in the West was very creative and unique, especially for a Christmas story. I thought that Stella and Frank were adorable and well suited for each other. I love that Stella and Frank have a shared love of Faith and mind. I love the Christian Truth that was all through the story. I love how Stella pushes Frank out of his shy stupor to do more for others and for God. I also love that Frank and Stella really sought God’s Direction for their relationship. I also love how Stella, Frank, and their friends were literally Jesus with skin on to others! Their friends also gave sage Godly advice when it was warranted and I loved that! For me, surprisingly, I really loved the mathematical world that was in the story! (That says a lot because I’m not too crazy about Math!) I thought the way that Ms. Witemeyer married Faith and Math together in the story was beautiful. I also love the correlation between Frank and his fellow mathematicians and the Wise Men of the Christmas story that was brought out in the story—it made a fun element to the story! Being a Dr. Pepper lover, I loved the scene that was incorporated into the story too! A Star in the West by Karen Witemeyer is a wonderful ending to the On a Midnight Clear: A 3-in-1 Christmas Novella Collection!
On a Midnight Clear: A 3-in-1 Christmas Novella Collection (As A Whole)
I love On a Midnight Clear: A 3-in-1 Christmas Novella Collection and love the stories Tracie Peterson, Misty M. Beller, and Karen Witemeyer created! I love how the True Spirit of Christmas was carried throughout each story, making Christ the centerpiece of the entire book. I also love the emphasis on Prayer and seeking God’s Direction in our lives that was painted into each story. I believe On a Midnight Clear: A 3-in-1 Christmas Novella Collection by Tracie Peterson, Misty M. Beller, and Karen Witemeyer is a great read for the Season, helping you to get into the Meaning of Christmas and reminding you what it’s all about! I highly recommend it!

The Shepherd’s Heart by Tracie Peterson
Angel is such a sweet young woman whose heart is broken when she is left at the altar. She is humiliated in front of guests and wants to just hide in her home and never cone out. I’m so glad she has granny around to cheer her up. Now granny may not be blood but this woman loves Angel like a granddaughter. When granny suggests a way for Angel to marry someone she is a bit hesitant. The good news is Angel has known this man since they were children.
Vincent has his hands full raising two children alone while grieving the loss of his wife, unborn child and another little one. His sheep farm keeps him busy but he knows he needs a wife to help him. When he receives a letter letting him know that Angel is coming to Wyoming to marry him I’m sure he was a little uneasy.
I absolutely adored the part where Angel sits with Vince’s children and prays with them. Benjamin is mad at God for taking his mother and siblings from him. The way Angel explains how God loves us and sometimes it is hard to understand why bad things happen, made me cry. At that moment I felt a change happening. God had sent an angel to Vincent to heal him and his children, find love again and bring a family together.
“ We need to always remember that we have nothing to fear with God. He is our light, and He will show us the way.”
No Room at the Inn by Misty M. Beller
I really enjoyed this story about an inn. Hope and her brother work hard to make travelers feel welcome. Hope especially loves the inn because she knows that her place is more than a business. For her it is, “ a calling, a way to show God’s love and hospitality to those who passed through their remote corner of the world.”
When a fire destroys part of the inn they both know that times will be hard until they will rebuild. As Christmas approaches, Hope wants so much to share Christmas with others. I loved how a storm brings unexpected guests to the inn . I could feel the frigid air the minute Hope opened to door. I found myself grabbing a blanket as I continued the story. I couldn’t wait to see who had unexpectedly found themselves at this tiny inn. That sure does remind me of a special story in the Bible.
The collection of travelers are quite fun to get to know. The driver of the stagecoach is a rugged older man who is determined to get his passengers to their destination. The injury to his arm is quite concerning and I liked how Hope stayed up all night to care for him. Ellen is a sweet young woman who is anxious to get back home to Sacramento. She finds Hope to be kind and welcoming and seems to be at ease in spite of being stuck in a tiny inn. Noah is a man of faith who takes his mission to get Ellen home safely very serious. I enjoyed the time he spent getting to know Hope.
As the group prepares for Christmas wonderful traditions are shared. How fun it would be to string cranberries and popcorn to garnish the tree. You can feel the peace in the room as the spirit of Christmas shines. With everyone helping to prepare for Christmas Hope thinks about the special gift she has for her brother. Not to give anything away the story had a bit of mystery. Something very special is missing and Hope becomes upset when it is nowhere to be found.
This is a sweet story of loss, trusting God and finding happiness. The characters really draw you in as we see their flaws and turn to God for help. Loneliness can be hard but God always has a plan. The author does a wonderful job of illustrating how the inn brings joy and a new beginning just like from the Bible. Jesus brought us hope and the miracle of His birth brought many to know God.
A Star in the West by Karen Witemeyer
This is a different kind of story that shows the author’s creativity. Who could imagine that a group of Professors gifted in mathematics would make a Christmas play a joy to many. As the “three wise men” travel to Waco, Texas they have no idea how God is going to use them . Frank is excited because he has been corresponding to someone special there. He hopes to build on their friendship and perhaps become more than just friends. He is very intelligent and his mind is clear and concise.
When Stella finds out that Frank is coming to her town she starts to freak out a little. She has no confidence in herself and worries that Frank will be disappointed when they meet. I felt Stella’s pain of rejection she continually feels as she thinks she will never find anyone to marry.
I enjoyed when Stella and Frank meet for the first time. Stella already has her mind set that Frank won’t like her so she tries not to be interested in him. Poor Frank is confused why Stella is acting weird. Their letters to each made him think she would be excited to meet him.
I like how Stella’s friends encourage her to pursue Frank and get out of her comfort zone. I know I can get very comfortable where I’m at. When I’m challenged to do something that cause me to be anxious I turn to God for help.
The story does have quite a bit of mathematical references that sometimes seemed overwhelming to this reader who was never good at math. I was intrigued by Frank and his ability to see everything as a math equation. The author is gifted as she uses Frank’s ability to establish a theme that is clever. I’ve never read a story like this and give applause to the uniqueness of the theme.
I love how Dr. Pepper is introduced in the story. Sitting at a soda shop Stella introduces Frank to this drink. If you are from Texas you know how much we love Dr. Pepper. Nothing beats the rich flavor it has and Frank seems to really enjoy it. I think this is where you see a change in Stella. She sees a side of Frank that is genuine and can feel that he is enjoying being with her.
The ending is wonderful and has a little mystery that adds a depth of God’s plan for each of us. I loved the manger scene and how Frank was not ashamed to share how much he loved God. I love how the author illustrates that no matter what you have done He loves you unconditionally. This has been a beautiful story of a Christmas miracle.
“ If God can make a path through the Red Sea, He can clear a way through whatever obstacles stand in front of you, too.”
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
There are three novellas in ON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR. All are historical fiction, historical romances. Tracie Peterson's novella is The Shepherd's Heart. Misty M. Beller's novella is No Room at the Inn. Karen Witemeyer's novella is A Star in the West.
A Star in the West is set in Waco, Texas, circa 1890.
First sentence: THREE WISE MEN FROM THE EAST TO ARRIVE TOMORROW. The headline caught Stella Barrington's eye as she cleaned up her father's breakfast dishes.
I'll start by reviewing my stand-out favorite, favorite of the three. I adored Karen Witemeyer's A Star in the West despite it being about math and/or science. Professor Ignatius Barrington, has invited the three professors to Baylor University for a conference of sorts. Stella Barrington, our heroine, has been corresponding with a young man, a professor, Frank N. Stentz. The two have become friendly-friends. Neither is absolutely certain how the other feels. She has all the feels for him; he has all the feels for her. But they've not had that conversation, that vulnerable I like-like you, do you like-like me conversation. Now the two will be meeting in person for the first time. Will he want to pursue a relationship? Will he not? And conversely, he is thinking will she want a relationship with me...what if she rejects me...etc. Over a short span of time, these two make a connection...but will it be enough for a proposal.
I underlined (this was a digital library read) so many places in this one!!!! SUCH a great, sweet story. I loved it.
I would rate this story easily a five stars.
Quotes from A Star In The West
Writing a man who lived a thousand miles away had seemed safe enough. The two of them would never meet. He worked at Harvard, for pity's sake. She had nothing to fear in striking up a friendship. And when the letters had become more personal? Well, it was like living in her very own novel. A place where she could pretend to be beautiful and clever, the type of woman to engage the interest of a scholarly gentleman. A gentleman she'd come to respect and esteem. Perhaps even love.
Besides, God had arranged her features the way he'd seen fit, and she'd not argue with the Creator over his artistic inclinations. He hadn't given her beauty, but he'd given her other blessings--ones she wouldn't trade even if offered the choice. A loving home, a supportive faith community, a passion for learning, and an empathy for others struggling to find their ways. Things that carried lasting value.
Her insinuation made his jaw clench. He looked her straight in the eye and refused to let his nervousness divert his gaze again. "You're right. There is a reason you haven't yet had a suitor. Because until today, I was in Massachusetts. I apologize for my tardiness." Now it was her turn to blink. Once. Twice. Three times. "You're in earnest?" He nodded. Then, just to ensure there was no misunderstanding, he added words. "I am."
"Don't let fear steal your chance for happiness, Miss Barrington," Annabelle whispered. "If God can make a path through the Red Sea, he can clear a way through whatever obstacles stand in front of you, too. So don't go running back to Egypt just yet."
It reminded me that holding tight to something just because it's familiar isn't always as safe or good as one might think. Sometimes we have to try something new to discover blessings only God can see.
No Room At The Inn is set in Nebraska territory (Wyoming) circa 1861.
First sentence: Hope Palmer slid her knife through the last of the dried apple pieces, letting them drop the bowl on the table in front of her.
Hope Palmer and her brother run an inn for the stage coach. A storm brings them unexpected guests for the holidays. One of whom is Noah Bentwood. The other is a young lady he is accompanying--having been hired by her father. She falls for him. He knows he's about to leave with little reason to return. But he does find her charming, etc. During their few days together will love develop.
This was my least favorite of the story. I felt that while there was some character development, it was a minimum of character development. Most of the story is about a 'missing' heirloom--a knife--that she plans to gift her brother. The plot is so thin and uninteresting. I also found myself doing a lot of overthinking. She is a baker--in the west, not really close to civilization as such. I'm fairly certain railroads had not gotten through that far yet. Though I could be wrong. Things come by stage coach. Hence the stage coach inn. Yet she is reckless with her baking--sugar, chocolate, spices, etc., In my opinion. Perhaps I've just read other pioneer stories where sugar is almost hoarded for extremely special occasions. It was an okay read. I liked the romance well enough.
I would rate this one three stars.
The Shepherd's Heart is set in Nebraska circa 1875.
First sentence: For a moment that dawn, everything seemed completely perfect.
Angellyn Lewis (aka Angel) was jilted on her wedding day, or perhaps the night before her wedding. One or the other. Yet she feels like she's heard a voice from above telling her she'll have a husband by Christmas. It's September. Visiting with a close family friend, she learns of a former childhood friend, recently widowed, who's looking for a woman to marry to help him raise his children. She has very fond feelings of their friendship, and so she agrees. He lives in Wyoming so off she goes to be his bride. Will these two who marry for convenience fall truly in love with each other?
I tend to love marriage of convenience stories. This one was fun. I DO personally wish it had been a full length novel. I do feel it was a bit rushed. I think with a bit more time--and less rushing--it would have easily been a five stars. I really found myself liking both Angel and Vincent (Duran). I just felt that they went from being awkward friends to not being able to keep their hands off each other. One page it was, she'd get the bedroom and he'd sleep in the barn. And then the next chapter they're in bed together. I kept looking for what I'd missed. Maybe I did truly miss something. But I thought it was good.
I enjoyed two out of the three stories very much. I would definitely reread The Shepherd's Heart and A Star in the West. I was not as fond of No Room at the Inn. But I didn't dislike it enough to regret my time.
This is a charming collection of Christmas novellas from three talented authors. I love how each of these tales beautifully connect to the Nativity story!
The first, The Shepherd's Heart by Tracie Peterson, tells a touching story of second chances and family. A lonely widowed shepherd and his children open their hearts to Angel Lewis, bringing new hope and warmth to their lives.
No Room at the Inn by Misty M. Beller is my personal favorite. Set against the rugged backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, a stagecoach inn becomes a cozy haven where strangers become unlikely friends amid a snowstorm. The characters are all very sweet, and a missing heirloom knife adds a delightful touch of mystery.
Finally, A Star in the West by Karen Witemeyer offers a clever twist on the story of the three wise men. Following Harvard mathematics professor Frank Stentz, who has been corresponding with Stella Barrington from Waco, Texas, the tale follows his journey West, hoping that their friendship might blossom into something more.
This collection of frontier historical novellas is a delightful read that captures the magic, mystery, and warmth of the holiday season!
I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Sweet Christmas novella collection penned by some of my favorite authors. The holiday season is at times so busy, it is hard to dive into a full-length book. A shorter story is just the right length to grab a moment of peace. These stories are a great reminder of the hope the holiday season is meant to bring. All three authors pen a story on the western frontier in the 1800's, providing a nostalgic reflection on a simpler life, before commercialization has overtaken the season. I loved the fact that the simple acts of baking, sharing simple gifts and most of all the Christmas story are the focus. With a sweet romance in each, the hope each couple has that the obstacles that lie in their paths will be solved is a gentle reminder to trust in God and His timing.
While I am enjoying the autumn, I highly recommend readers add this to their holiday TBR.
