Tori Alexander is a podcaster and crime reporter with a passion for justice - even when it's uncomfortable. Scott Sinclair is struggling to recouperate from the gunshot wound which damaged his right arm and threatens his career. He is training himself to shoot with his left hand, when he unexpectedly finds himself trying to protect Tori from a random gunman and then is pulled into the case she's involved with. Tori is NOT keen to be returning to her home town, but when her nephew gets mixed up in a murder case - as a prime suspect - she has no choice.
It's clear early on that there is a spark between Tori and Scott, but Tori struggles to trust Scott, or God, who she feels ignored her prayers and isn't interested in her. Scott's past is threatening his future, and his past and his faith are both red flags to Tori. They have to work together though, and Tori will learn several lessons about trust before they are through.
I found this a little bit flat as a read and it took quite a while to really feel engaged with the characters. There is plenty of drama early on and I was initially much more interested in the studio fire and the events around that than I was about Jenny. Which was a shame since Jenny was murdered (not a spoiler!). The story itself is well told and the characters are believable and have depth although dealing with both main character's back stories and their consequences, AND the question of who killed Jenny, and how Drew can get out of the mess he's got himself into are quite a lot to deal with. Maybe I'm slightly jaded with characters who have 'difficult families' as I found Scott more interesting than Tori. Although I would be interested to know more about Tori and Amy's podcast.
A good read for suspense enthusiasts, with a slow-burner romance and light faith elements. Despite my comments above, I am still keen to see what this author writes next.
