If you just want to lean back like you would in a cinema to enjoy a movie, this book can provide a couple of hours of fun. I’ve come to realize that Hurst loves revenge plots, and this takes it to the next level!

Once again, I so wish that we could rate books with .5 stars, as this was a solid 4.5. I’m usually not a big fan of jumping to different character’s points of view with each chapter, but I enjoyed it here. It’s a very small cast of characters, all of whom were interesting and unique. And this time given to each person really let the reader get to know them in complete detail, leaving nothing to the imagination. Alison plots her revenge on her unfaithful husband, Graham, with her best friend, Claire, all while she is terminally ill. And she isn’t the most likeable person, but if you imagine yourself in her situation, you’re fully empathetic to her. Maybe she took things a bit too far, ie Andy, but it was all part of her master plan. She was not going to die, leaving any stone unturned, and boy oh boy was it a guilty pleasure to bear witness to. Now there were a few tidbits that I was a bit fuzzy on. Possibly I overlooked them, or their explanations were not totally clear. The biggest was how Graham was not aware that Jasmine was Claire. He stated at one point that she and Alison were best friends for four years, and got together frequently, so there was no way he couldn’t have seen a picture of her or been introduced in that span. I also wasn’t sure why Alison chose a certain endpoint for herself, and didn’t make things appear to be more pointed at her husband, ensuring he got what she felt he deserved. But, again, just a few minor things that could have been explained further, but none of it tainted the great writing and story. I am brand new to Daniel Hurst, but am now a fan.

"He’s trying his luck, but fair play to him; you don’t get anything if you don’t ask."

The Broken Vows
by Daniel Hurst

I have been winding my way through this author's books all week. This is my fourth one. It was my least favorite so far.

And it started as my favorite.

This review will be impossible to do without spoilers but it will be spoiler-free until I post a spoiler alert. The thing is -- I loved it at first. I think my problem is the same one I had with one of his other books. It started off great but went off the rails with the plot.

So I will put up a TRIGGER ALERT. The main character is dying of cancer which we find out at the beginning of the book. But it delves into this issue deeply so if you have problems with the subject matter -- which I do -- be careful.

So -- Allison is ill and on top of that her husband Graham is having an affair.

This is a "revenge" book.

Allison finds out and wants to make him pay before she dies. OK -- I like revenge books. And I could not stand Hubs so I was all in.

Until about 40-50 percent of the book.

OK -- I really do have to post spoilers as I am about to give away everything. If you are going to read this, do not read my review any further please:

SPOILERS:

The book went into total horror movie territory -- with no warning. It really was a let-down because the protagonist's moves were illogical although maybe that was the point.

The thing is -- all my sympathy for her cause left me. And that's a shame because without that, it was tough. Adding to the difficulty was that I always knew I was reading a book. The plot was surreal and made no sense. I really would have preferred a scheme that had some basis in reality.

I also was put off by how MUCH time was put aside for ruminations on death. Having lost people to cancer, I skimmed much of that. And with the horrible characters, the outlandish plot and the all around depressing vibe, the book simply lost me. I still read the whole thing but my sense of being let down was strong.

And it got worse at the end.

I must mention the end because it made zero sense. Zero.

I felt -- cheated. And I do like this writer whom I have only just discovered. Obviously when one reads four of the author's books in one week, one has to like the author whose materials they are reading.

The end was downright bizarre. It makes NO sense and frankly it does not do the reader justice. It underestimates the reader's ability to find plot holes.

WHO was Kate? How would Allison have found her? How and why would Allison even know she could TRUST her?

I do not know the answers to these questions because we are never told. And the book ends without anything more. After all that reading could we not have had a trial? Some suspense?

It just started with such deep promise. I really liked it. But as I said it is the plot I dislike, not the writing. The whole story left me cold and although I still plan to read the author's books -- I am starting another shortly! -- I do hope I get back the feeling that I had when reading another of his books, "The boyfriend" which was terrific and so atmospheric and creepy. This one was a miss for me.

"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned".

Alison is happily married to her husband Graham until she discovers that Graham is cheating on her with her best friend.

At or about the same time, Alison also receives a breast cancer diagnosis.

The prognosis for Alison's marriage and breast cancer is poor.

Yet before Alison leaves her husband and this world, she wants revenge.

BIG revenge.

I am a HUGE fan of author Daniel Hurst.   He is a gifted storyteller with well-crafted plots.

And I am even a bigger fan of revenge books.

Sooooo.....even though The Broken Vows" featured many eye-rolling moments and plot holes, overall, the book was ultra-compelling, unpredictable, entertaining, and unputdownable.

I listened to the audiobook and the narration was superb.

I have listened to all of Daniel Hurst's audiobooks and I look forward to listening to this talented author's future titles.

You who always read a story where cheater scumbag and homewrecking whore come out unscathed... think again!
The story entertained me and I loved watching cheaters have their lives turned upside down.
Too bad our heroine didn't head towards the rising sun with the satisfaction of revenge completed.

I think about joining my companion in there but then decide that we’ve had enough fun for one afternoon, so I remain on the bed instead.

That’s because I need to get home to my wife and my acquaintance in the shower needs to get home to her life too.

The lady in the shower always makes me take off the ring before we engage in our sordid shenanigans, mainly because she says she doesn’t want to be reminded of my wife. That’s fair enough, I suppose.

‘How is she?’ ‘I don’t know. I think something’s wrong.’ ‘Something’s always wrong.’

No secrets. Graham and I tell each other everything.

It’s been ten minutes since my wife told me that she had breast cancer.

I’m in love with another woman, meaning that as much as I care about Alison and want her to get better, there is someone I care about even more.

That’s because I was planning on leaving Alison this weekend. But how am I supposed to do that now when she is like this?

‘I’m sorry, but I’m not going to be able to move in with you this weekend.’

Right now, that means figuring out the best way to keep both Alison and Jasmine happy.

My affair with Jasmine began over a year ago, and in all that time, I’ve spent most of it thinking about the new woman in my life instead of the old one.

My wife or my lover. Security or unpredictability. Alison or Jasmine.

My extramarital relationship with Jasmine began at a time when I was having doubts about the decisions I had made in my life up to that point. I was bored at work. I was bored in my social life. And I was bored with the woman I had married.

Not only am I still married, but my wife has no idea that I’m cheating on her.

‘No, it’s not actually,’ she replies, shaking her head. ‘I’m here to tell you that I have been sleeping with Graham for over a year now, and this weekend was supposed to be when he finally left you and started a new life with me. But he’s chosen you instead. Congratulations. And good luck with that chemo.’

It’s a double betrayal for Alison, her husband and her best friend, the two people she would have trusted more than anybody else, and I can’t even imagine how she is feeling inside.

Graham and Claire are going to pay for what they did to me.

After my affair was unearthed, I chose Alison. But if I can’t be with her, then I guess I choose Claire.

Good idea, poorly written

The writing of this book is terrible! I had to skim read it as it was so repetitive, even page was just one thought, written, repeated, re worded, repeated.
Then there is the contradictions throughout- they always met at a swanky hotel that Claire paid for, but she couldn't afford a good lawyer, then Alison saw them coming and going from Claire's house, where she lived alone??
Such awful descriptions too, it was as though the author had been told not to use the same descriptions more than once - bloody fingers turned to dirty digits in one sentence!!
The epilogue also didn't go far enough, the plot idea was great but we are never told how she managed it and if it worked
I'll avoid this author

This book was just delightful for me! I read it in just a few hours and couldn't put it down. This isn't a romance; I think is supposed to be more of a marital thriller. It is a story of revenge. It is not terribly edgy, but I did want to keep reading to find out what would happen to that ass-hat husband of hers and his mistress. It is dark-ish, but not gritty if that makes sense. For those of us who love an infidelity story, this will check some of the boxes, but not all. The cheating is always there, but is not truly explained to the h (although he's got quite the internal monologue, Beta Boy) on page nor is it meaningfully apologized for. For me, the revenge ultimately neutralized what was missing, but your mileage may vary.

In my mind, there is absolutely NO way the H could explain away or justify his actions. They are unbelievably abhorrent. The h allows him only once to spell it out for her in great detail, however that's mostly off-page. We know some of the details due to his inner teen girl explaining the H's perspective, but we find out more details at the end. Just delicious!

I do not tend to gravitate toward thrillers, so I honestly am not a great judge of this book's worth in that category - this rating was sheerly based on how engrossed I was in the story and how happy I was with the ending!

There are a whole heaping helping of triggers in this story: cheating, betrayal, terminal illness, suicide, and revenge.

By writing his exciting novel of revenge called The Broken Vows, Daniel Hurst can take his place alongside Alexandre Dumas, the famous author of The Count of Monte Cristo. But unlike The Broken Vows, The Count of Monte Cristo had the benefit of time to execute his revenge. The victim in The Broken Vows did not.

The victim in The Broken Vows is Alison, who is told that her husband is having an affair about the same time she is told that she is dying from cancer and has less than a year to live. The devastated Alison is consumed with rage and methodically plots revenge on both her husband and his lover. You will need to read the novel to see what I mean when I say that she executes more than just her plan.

Ultimately we discover in the final chapters that her plot has plenty of holes, which I can‘t discuss without spoiling the story for you (so I won’t), but in the Epilogue Alison herself concedes that her plan may not succeed, though by the end of the book it looks like it is succeeding when almost assuredly in reality it would not.

But along the way, Daniel Hurst has some insightful psychological observations about what motivates the amoral Alison and her cheating husband Graham, and he effectively uses his trademark style of presenting their viewpoints in alternating chapters.

In the end, however, it turns out that no one was a winner and everyone was a victim.

I really enjoyed this one! I couldn’t put it down as soon as I started it. I will say that I kinda saw it coming but I still enjoyed it, and at some point I wasn’t sure what to expect next.

Definitely worth a read! Helped me out of a reading slump. It was fast, easy and great.

At first, I was hooked. The writing was good, the characters were interesting, then that twist regarding the affair, awesome. I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen. What delicious revenge would be concocted…?

But then, the writing became ridiculously wordy around the middle of the book, almost like the author had some kind of word count requirement (which he probably did). Considering this book was only 197 pages, all this wordiness was, frankly, hilarious.

There were slight inconsistencies.. Alison couldn’t find any lingerie to put on in the beginning of the book, but then towards the end of the book, for dinner, she easily found “some of her best lingerie”, knowing exactly where it was.

The interactions between characters became unrealistic. Police officers don’t give their opinions on who killed who or who could have done what on current murder investigations. They don’t talk about how messy the houses they visit are.

Fine, that’s all whatever.

The ending, was.. well, it was ok. Nothing spectacular. Believable? Not really. A truly fantastic psychological thriller is the type you really don’t see coming, and if you were to re-read the book over again knowing everything, it would still be believable. This book isn’t that.

I never like criticizing a book because frankly, I know it took a lot of effort and time to write one, and who am I to rain on someone’s parade? But, also without anyone giving their opinion (however right or wrong it may be), the author continues on thinking there is no room for improvement in their writing.

Ok, so I have mixed feelings about this one. Just a strange book, and I knew from the beginning I wasn't really invested in it, but still I was curious and finished it. I didn't like it or dislike it. I disliked every character. This book is full of strange characters. After the first few chapters the story started getting a bit silly and far fetched. I can’t say what I’m referring to without posting a spoiler but I’m sure you will know what I mean when you read it. Alison is married to Graham and has a best friend named Claire. Alison is given a terminal cancer diagnosis and finds out her husband has been cheating on her. As the saying goes; Hell Hath No Fury Like a Woman Scorned - this is especially true of a woman who is about to lose everything, including her life. I initially felt sorry for Alison but that changed when she started to make strange and horrible decisions. Graham was an absolute selfish moron from the very beginning, literally thinking with an organ other than his brain and Claire was the worst kind of friend ever! The characters are one dimensional, unrealistic and terrible people with whom it is impossible to sympathize. I didn't like any body. I want to know what somebody else feels (it was free on kindle when I downloaded it btw).

I've read 3 of this author's books which I loved, thought they were very clever and he had a distinctive style. So this one was a huge huge disappointment.Total dreck. The story had potential but I found the storytelling and writing very flat and dull. The characters were totally shallow, no background, no knowledge or presentation of who these people were and what made them tick. The were cutouts of people. And the ending was anti-climactic and dull. I didn't care about any of these people.

Alison finds out her husband has cheated on her with her best friend and that she has terminal cancer in the same week. She’s determined to get revenge and at first I assumed this was going to be a fairly simple story.

Oh how I was wrong. Jumping between characters in first person we see the points of view of Alison, her husband and her best friend and what plays out is a great novel with lots of twists I didn’t see coming.

First of all I've noticed before in Daniel's books, he refers to a man who's lost his wife as a widow instead of a widower! Also, one minute Claire was living in a small flat then all of a sudden she was living in a house with a front door and side alley!

This book is total revenge fantasy and I’m here for it!

A super fast paced domestic thriller - Allison vows revenge when she discovers her husband has broken their marriage vows

I love Daniel Hurst for his quick thrillers - they’re usually entertaining and full of normal people doing terrible things to each other - this was no exception

This book takes a very tragic incident (actually two) and adds a deliciously dark twist of vengeance. I don’t know about other popcorn thriller fans, but that’s what I’m here for! Is it realistic? Hopefully not. Is it simplified? Sure. Is it fun? Absa-fricken-lutley!

Oh wow this was all kinds of wrong… but just so entertaining!

Thankfully, it’s fiction and we can just enjoy it for the great revenge trope that it is 😂 None of the characters are redeemable but then thats what contributes to making it such a fun tale.

I wont give any spoilers since, in my opinion, it must unfold just as the author intended.

This author has clearly found his audience because he seems popular, unfortunately I don’t think his style is for me.
This would be your definition of a popcorn thriller I imagine, over the top plots, unlikable characters with motives not even close to relatable. I’d put him in the same box as Freida McFadden, the different is, I’ve given most of Freida McFadden books 3 stars while out of four books I’ve read from this author three of them are two starts one is a 3.5.

Also, if Graham says “I just don’t wanna be alone” one more time …

The Broken Vows by Daniel Hurst is a gripping novel that delves into the complexities of relationships, the consequences of betrayal, and the journey toward redemption. Set against the backdrop of a picturesque countryside, Hurst weaves a compelling narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end.

The story revolves around the lives of two couples, Mark and Sarah, and David and Emily, whose seemingly perfect lives are shattered by betrayal and infidelity. Mark and Sarah appear to have it all—a beautiful home, successful careers, and a loving marriage. However, when Mark's old flame resurfaces, he finds himself torn between his loyalty to Sarah and his lingering feelings for his former lover.

Meanwhile, David and Emily, childhood sweethearts who have been through thick and thin together, face their challenges when David's job takes him away from home for extended periods. Feeling lonely and neglected, Emily seeks solace in the arms of another man, setting off a chain of events that threatens to destroy their marriage. As secrets are revealed and trust is shattered, each character must confront their demons and make difficult choices about love, forgiveness, and the possibility of starting anew.

Hurst excels at creating multi-dimensional characters that feel authentic and relatable. From Mark's internal struggle with his past mistakes to Sarah's resilience in the face of heartbreak, each character undergoes a profound transformation throughout the novel. Readers will find themselves empathizing with their struggles and rooting for their redemption.

At its core, The Broken Vows explores the themes of love, betrayal, forgiveness, and second chances. Hurst skillfully examines the complexities of human relationships and how we navigate the murky waters of temptation and desire. The novel also offers a poignant meditation on the power of forgiveness and the possibility of healing even the deepest wounds.

Hurst's prose is elegant and evocative, drawing readers into the lush landscapes and turbulent emotions of his characters. His vivid descriptions bring the English countryside to life, while his keen insight into the human psyche adds depth and nuance to the narrative. The pacing is brisk, with well-timed twists and turns that keep the story moving forward at a captivating pace.

In The Broken Vows, Daniel Hurst delivers a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of love, betrayal, and redemption. With its compelling plot, richly drawn characters, and lyrical prose, this novel is sure to leave a lasting impression on readers long after they turn the final page. Whether you're a fan of literary fiction or simply enjoy a good old-fashioned page-turner, The Broken Vows is not to be missed.

it pains me to see how she literally thinks her marriage couldn’t be an better while he’s out here planing to end it bc he loves another woman

“Jasmine might be cold-hearted enough to carry out an affair like I can, but we’re not evil. We do still have hearts, and we are still capable of thinking about other people’s feelings.”

i’m cold hearted my id rather die than cheat.
so i’d say ur just terrible ppl but i’m also a terrible person and yet i’d never cheat.

“I’m here to tell you that I have been sleeping with Graham for over a year now, and this weekend was supposed to be when he finally left you and started a new life with me. But he’s chosen you instead. Congratulations. And good luck with that chemo.”

I KNEW IT WAS GONNA BE HER.
bc we never got the description of her bestfriend or “jasmin” other than the fact she has blonde hair.

“Technically, every single one of us has cheated on the others. Andy cheated on Claire. Her and Graham cheated on me. And now I have cheated on Graham because I’m still legally married to him even if we are now estranged.”

the way she killed him and thinks gives me gone girl vibes.

“but no one can go back.
We can only go forward.”

“Okay, so he hadn’t killed anybody, but he had killed our marriage, and to me, that was just as bad.”

tbh i could be w a killer but never a cheater

“I love you.’
I’m glad I got to say it before I slipped away.
I’m just sorry I never had the chance to hear his reply.”

nah why are we getting clearies pov 💀💀
y’all could never make me hate alison

“I’m screwed, and so is Claire.
That’s because Alison has won.
She has got her revenge on both of us.
And she has done it from beyond the grave.”

“Because I knew about their affair before Claire told me about it on my doorstep.”

“I just hope there are no such things as wedding vows in the afterlife.
I’d hate for them to be broken again.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is my personal 5 star rating system because I’m too lazy to write a review for every book.

5 stars -> OMFG. I couldn’t stop listening. I was engaged from beginning to end. The story & narrator was amazing. I 100% recommend this book & author. I was able to clearly follow each and every character.

4 stars -> It was pretty good. I would’ve rated 5 stars, But either the ending was lacking, I struggled to keep up with characters, or the story didn’t keep me fully engaged. The narrator was pretty good as well. I’m on the fence about recommending this book, It could go either way.

3 Stars -> It was boring at times & I missed chunks of the story. I most likely struggled to keep up with character developments. The only way I would recommend this book is if it was part of a series. The narrator was most likely average or just couldn’t fix a mediocre book.

2 Stars -> It was pretty horrible. I used it as background noise because I hadn’t had a chance to search for another book. The book either had a bad narrator, The character development was non existent, or the story was hot garbage. I would not recommend this book.

1 Star -> The absolute only reason I listened to this book was because i had no time to search for another one & I needed background noise. It was 1 step up from listening to the radio. I wouldn’t recommend this book to my worst enemy. Everything about this book was terrible. This is only recommended for people on death row and have absolutely nothing else to read.
