Originally published in 1958, this book shows how a systematic consideration of what exactly may be meant by calling anything ‘good’, inevitably leads on to the more general and fundamental problem of the relations between value-judgments and statements of fact. It does on to explain some of the difficult and far-reaching issues which this problem involves. The book is intended as an introduction for students interested in finding out the nature and point of modern methods of philosophic analysis when applied to problems of moral philosophy.

About the author

Alan Claude Robin Goldsmid Montefiore was a British philosopher and Emeritus Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford. He was a co-founder and Emeritus President of the Forum for European Philosophy, as well as Joint President of the Wiener Library, and a Chair of Council of the Froebel Educational Institute.
Montefiore was the son of Leonard Montefiore (1889–1961), who had been the Wiener Library's second president and later its chairman. He is also grandson of Claude Joseph Goldsmid Montefiore (1858–1938), a past president of the Anglo-Jewish Association. Montefiore received an Honorary Silver Medal of Jan Masaryk at the Czech Republic Ambassador's residence in London in November 2019.

Ce înseamnă oare să afirmi despre ceva că este bun? E greu de spus la prima vedere dacă această întrebare este absurd de uşoară sau absurd de dificilă. Poate, în feluri diferite, ea este şi aşa şi aşa. Căci cei mai mulţi ar răspunde probabil că ei ştiu perfect de bine ce înţeleg, dar că le vine greu sau chiar imposibil să se exprime precis asupra înţelesului. Într-un fel nu e în aceasta nimic neobişnuit. Este lucru cunoscut că una e să faci ceva pe care ştii bine cum să-l faci şi cu totul altceva să explici întocmai ceea ce faci de aşa manieră încât să-l poată face şi altul la fel; acelaşi lucru este valabil şi în ceea ce priveşte întrebuinţarea corectă a cuvintelor precum şi dacă e vorba să explici cum se înoată sau se ţine echilibrul pe sârmă. Efectiv, rareori se întâmplă să le vină uşor oamenilor să explice întocmai înţelesul unui cuvânt dat. Oricum, cuvântul „bun” pare a nedumeri mai mult decât majoritatea celorlalte pe care le folosim. Ceea ce este cu atât mai de mirare, cu cât acesta departe de a fi un termen tehnic, este dimpotrivă unul dintre cuvintele cele mai curente şi mai uzitate din limba noastră.
