This is, in my opinion, one of the best pieces of literature gifted to humankind. bell hooks and Cornell West share discussions on Black intellectual life and everything that comes with, from, and against it. This very well could speak to the experience of any BIPOC intellectual, but it certainly centers around the Black experience- something that needs (and begs for) focus.
From the shortcomings of Barack Obama’s presidency, the minstrel nature of Tyler Perry’s work and how it feeds into the white supremacist lens of Black culture, to discussions on how to find community as an intellectual, the power of critical thought, and the need for perseverance in this post industrial, capitalist, patriarchal, and very often isolating society, this book offers valuable insight and discussion which our world desperately needs more of.
This update of the previous book is a welcome addition that gives readers a look into both of these brilliant intellectuals ideas in the 21st century. While done during the Obama years, the critiques are still valid, just as they were when the original edition of this book was written.
