The Age of Storms

Rate this book
Long dormant magic wakens. Storms scourge the land. Omens portend the turning of an age, and the Defiled escape their ancient prisons...

Callan has only scratched the surface of his power, but his enemies have had lifetimes. With their release comes a threat that will inflict a fate worse than death on all in its path. To stop it, Callan must first master the power he never asked for. Yet that is the simpler half of his challenge.

Arcane scholars also exhort him to navigate diplomacy among fractured nations, torn apart by centuries of conflict. Their discord only fuels the growing darkness. If he fails to unite them, the world will fall.

But he is not alone. Allies, near and far, will aid him. For the family he lost, he has found others. Yet so, too, has the shadow found him. And it follows his every step...

I am grateful to have received an ARC copy of this book! This one was better than the first one in my opinion which is impressive considering a lot of series have the “second book syndrome” where it can get dull at the midpoint. Rocco Levitas is a very impressive writer who manages to make the political or story pushing dialog and travels feel alive. Callan’s character development in this installment was very fluid and you feel like you’re right there with him while he justifies his place in this life of power he didn’t want. The darkness that follows Callan gave me the same sensation as Rand avoiding Mashadar and the Dark One and Kaladin wrestling with the everstorm (WoT and Stormlight). You get a little bit of Anakin syndrome with Callan as well which pull the reader out of the common tropes with typical heroes and into the internal conflicts and grey areas that give the characters some humanity in a fantasy setting. The Veins of Eternity really is a breath of fresh air.

"The Age of Storms" by Rocco Levitas is the second installation of the epic series "The Veins of Eternity." After the incredible showdown at the end of the first book, this one takes a big breath. The miraculous powers of those who sealed the void are now together, but restrained by the demands of a new political game. The threat in the physical world has shifted, taking to the sky in terrifying destructive storms, while the threat in the spiritual realms has changed as well. Defiled pose a real danger, but our cast of characters do too. This book shifted gears a bit, with the characters moving into learning mode: of the complexities of magic, of politics, and of relationships.

The plot also grows more complex, so be sure to read this right after the first book, or read the nifty summary provided at the beginning. Key characters head in different directions on distinct paths, for their own purposes, and it can be overwhelming if you've been away for too long. Sabhira grows perhaps the most, with her worldview changing the most, and she comes into her own character. Callan remains likeable and gains essential skills, and Vasha leans into her prideful but well-earned persona as she does the same. However, there are many new names to meet, and adjusting factions of power who must get on the same side for the world to survive. The pacing overall is a bit slower than the first book.

The action familiar from the first book returns toward the end of this one, and this is where I think the author really shines. Battles are chaotic but full of personal moments, with physical fighting intertwining with magic. Like the first book, or even more so, the veil between the physical and spiritual realms is frequently tossed aside, with many scenes that seem dream-like and misty. The magic is very much about feel and intuition, despite having a clear foundation of rules, as it is expressed through diverse interpretations.

If you like hard magic systems, elaborate world-building with many kingdoms, religious factions, and cultures, and monstrously powerful baddies, check out Levitas's work.

Rocco Levitas returns with the thunderous second installment of The Veins of Eternity series, The Age of Storms — a sweeping epic brimming with ancient magic, fractured alliances, and the weight of destiny.

As dormant magic stirs and storms ravage the world, the stage is set for a battle not just of armies, but of power, prophecy, and internal struggle. At the center stands Callan, a reluctant hero whose powers remain barely tapped — and whose enemies have had lifetimes to prepare. The burden he carries is immense: stop the rise of the Defiled, master his emerging magic, and unite a world long shattered by discord.

Levitas deepens his world-building in this sequel, weaving threads of diplomacy, war, and mysticism into a gripping narrative. Arcane scholars and political factions bring both urgency and complexity, while Callan’s personal journey is as compelling as the epic scale of the threat he faces. His growth — from a man unsure of his place, to one who must embrace a role he never asked for — is one of the novel’s emotional anchors.

But perhaps most powerful is the story’s theme of found family and loyalty. Though Callan has lost much, he gains new allies — and new reasons to fight. Yet even as hope builds, a shadow looms close behind, promising that victory will not come without sacrifice.

A must-read for fans of immersive, character-driven epic fantasy, The Age of Storms offers a potent mix of political intrigue, mythic stakes, and heartfelt moments. Levitas proves once again he is a master of momentum — every page feels like the calm before the storm, and the storm never stops coming.

The epic journey continues.

We follow the story through multiple perspectives, and I thought this was very well done. In the first book, a lot of the discovery and training of powers was done in short, quick bursts. I enjoyed seeing Callan, Gedri, and Vasha continue the search for knowledge while they were travelling and practising with each other. Callan is really growing on me. He's finding his own voice, being more focal and learning whom he can trust. Where the first book had a sense of loneliness where Vasha and Callan were concerned, this one really felt like they both were coming into their own and finding their place in the grand scheme of things.
Their actions have a purpose, instead of just trying to survive.

This story ends on a bittersweet note. As people grow, bonds change. I'm already looking forward to the next book.

I can not recommend this enough for people who really want a story reminiscent of epic fantasy such as Lord of The Rings, where groups of people are fighting a greater evil from different places with one goal.

Honestly just about a third of the way in so far but the story keeps in my mind, continually calling me back for even just a couple minutes to spare between hectic schedules. After the first book, The Seam of Eternity, I’m loving the new aspects of the characters as we see them prepare for what’s coming next, learning alongside Callan about the Shu’Ranai and the magic of this world. Really looking forward to engaging more with Vasha as she grows - seeing her already have more insight. Loving it so far!

Pure, classic, epic fantasy. Our heroes from Book 1 return and grow stronger, powerful enemies rise against them, and even the world itself wreaks havoc on the good guys' plans. But the emotional stakes on individual levels really shine here, even with the world on the brink of collapse. I loved the uniqueness of the magic system in Book 1, and this takes it to a new level. And all the while, tension is brewing between fighting nations and factions, which leads up to a nail-biting climax. This is my favorite book in the series so far.

Great 2nd book to The Veins of Eternity. No slump here. The worldbuilding, the characters and unique magic system are all fantastic and just continue to build from book 1. I have been completely invested in these characters since the first few chapters of book 1 and The Age of Storms keeps building and growing. I love the magic system, it is so different than anything else I've read. If you love epic fantasy you definitely need to add this to your TBR like right now! I definitely need more and need another book immediately!

This is an epic fantasy tale where unlikely heroes must unite a fractured world to prevent an ancient evil from escaping its prison realm. The story is set in a richly detailed universe with a classic-style fantasy vibe, featuring a daring quest, complex characters, and a battle against time to save civilization.

Great book. It was a pager turner and the suspense was a thriller. I was on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t even put it down literally. It was an action packed of drama and chaos in the battle zone in the moment of evil vs good. Madness and battlefield is going to get emotional and darkness of light of war. And who is going to win this battle.
I definitely recommend this book and you won’t be disappointed. I received advance copy of this book via Bookfunnel and am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion. Trina Jones
