Lewycka was born in a refugee camp in Kiel, Germany after World War II. Her family then moved to England. She was educated at Keele University and worked as a lecturer in media studies at Sheffield Hallam University.
In addition to her fiction, Lewycka has written a number of books giving practical advice for carers of elderly people, published by the charity Age Concern.

Die Autorin schreibt mit Humor und sehr liebenswert über eine Gruppe Erdbeerpflücker in England. Durchaus gesellschaftskritisch aber nicht mit dem erhobenen Zeigefinger wird einiges aufgedeckt was man bisher ahnte, aber doch nicht wusste. Im Vordergrund bleibt die Menschlichkeit und die Tatsache dass wir im Grunde alle nur unser Glück suchen. Aus meiner Sicht absolut lesenswert ❤
