In Midnight Vengeance Jacko and Lauren faced down a threat from her past. This time they will face a far nastier threat: Jacko's past. Lisa Marie Rice is a much better writer than these novella and short novel books indicate, that is not to say they aren't good, they are great, but could be so much more. This one is a great plot with characters you can really root for.

Jacko's mother was an addict, his father unknown and he left home as soon as he could and joined the Navy eventually becoming a SEAL sniper. He met and fell in love with Lauren after he left the SEALs and took a job with AIS, a security firm owned by former SEALs. Life is great for Jacko and Lauren, except he wants to get married, and she wants to wait. When Lauren tells him she is pregnant, Jacko shuts down. With his horrid background, he never planned to have kids.

Delving into his background was a painful experience Jacko never wanted to endure. But with Lauren pregnant, Jacko needs some answers about his background and some assurance that his kid won't turn out as messed up as his mother was. What he finds lands him in a vendetta that is thirty years old and could cost him his life.

Sadly this novella was a bit of a disappointment, shockingly because of the actions of the hero - normally LMR heroes are completely amazing. The hero just runs off after the heroine gives him what to her is happy news. He then proceeds to call her occasionally and just not speak, when he could have easily talked on the phone and told her why he was doing what he was doing. If they can't communicate after being together that long then I worry for their future. He came off as cowardly and she came off as way too forgiving. She would just say how much she loved him and just knew he would be home soon. It just seemed unrealistic, in a real relationship you would have the right to be upset and demand answers, not just act that sugary sweet when your partner is acting like an idiot.

The last 1/3 of the story after he came home was pretty good but it wasn't enough to really save the story for me. I gave it three stars because it's LMR and I did enjoy the last portion but I wasn't impressed with this story and Jacko's actions.

4 Soul Searching Stars!!

We were introduced to Lauran and Jacko in Midnight Vengeance. Jacko has always been a loner, other than his SEAL family, he has no family ties, his junkie mother died years earlier and he never knew who his father was or if he had any blood family at all. He never had a home or felt any kind of tenderness until Lauren. He totally and completely love's Lauren, without question, she is his heart, his soul....his home.

When Lauren drops a bombshell on him, he panics and goes in search of his roots, what he finds out about his mother and his grandparents is heartbreaking. He also goes back to the town he grew up in in search of the kind hearted sheriff who looked out for him as a child and encouraged him to join the Navy.

Unbeknownst to Jacko he sets in motion a series of events that brings danger to his door along with a DEA Agent who will rock his world!!

I love these "Midnight" books, I also love that the couples from the previous books in the series are included in this novella, so we get to see what's happening in their lives too. This is a must read if your a fan of the series!!!!

This is a follow-up novella to Midnight Vengeance, so the couple has already had their HEA. I've read Midnight Vengeance, but I don't remember it, and this still read really easy as a stand-alone. I love Lisa Marie Rice books. They always have super alpha, over-protective heroes who are obsessively in love with the heroine. Over the top in love - it's fun.

Jacko is Navy SEAL and now works private security with his good buddies. They are all alpha, deadly, and in love with their wives. Jacko and Lauren are in love, but not married yet. Jacko has asked, several times, and Lauren lives with him but she hasn't quite said yes yet. After being on the run and hiding her identity, she is settling into her new life of love and bliss. She is getting used to being loved by Jacko, fiercely. He worships her. He will do anything, and I mean anything to make her happy. He also really likes having sex.

She thought he'd carry her to bed, which he sometimes did. It was his way to get them into the bedroom as fast as possible, though he knew she thought it was romantic.

Not romantic. Practical.

But Jacko could do romance.

But then she tells him she is pregnant. Jacko gets up and leaves. He doesn't handle it well:

Lauren bleeding to death flashed across his vision again and bile rose up his gullet. He leaned forward and vomited last night's dinner. His stomach simply emptied itself out, the contents splashing onto the shoulder of the road in great heaving spasms. He has no control, none.

His body was rejecting what was in his stomach and rejecting the thought of Lauren pregnant with his child.

Don't be too angry with Jacko. His mother was a junkie addict who was a horrible mother and he never met his father. He is terrified his bad genes will run in the baby's blood. So he runs instead. He isn't running from Lauren - just running to gather information. He goes back to his hometown and starts to uncover information about his father, as his mother is already dead. This leads to a little action and suspense in the story.

During the time he is gone, his emotions are on such a roller coaster, Lauren will call him and he never speaks. He just listens as she reminisces about how they met and how much she loves him. It's so sweet and romantic. Lauren is surrounded by Jacko's friends (who are also co-workers) and they vow to hunt Jacko down and cut off his balls, for leaving Lauren. But that's just how they show that they love him.

Don't worry - Jacko returns, and good things happen. It's a very sweet and romantic novella with a dash of suspense.

Oh, this started off good but then the H leaves the h abruptly and is gone for half the book. He would call her but wouldn't say anything. I was so mad at him. What a cowardly thing to do. Jacko was described as such a strong and brave man who adored the h, but his actions said otherwise. I mean he just runs as soon as she tells him the big news and expects his friends to take care of her. Plus, the h's reaction also puzzled me. She would talk sweetly to him when he would call even though he never said a word and basically left her hanging. The story became suspenseful towards the end I enjoyed the revelations. Still don't like Felicity and hope she doesn't get a short story.

I kept laughing at how the heroine kept wondering if she should break something so Jacko's friends would have something to fix so they could feel better. Like they were helping her.

Jacko had good reasons to go on a "quest" and I liked the results.

This is NOT a stand alone. You have to read the other books (at least Jacko's book) first.

Pin the Tail on the Romance time! My TBR list is at 603 of 1738 books, so I spun the magic random number generator app to get book #1383: Midnight Quest by Lisa Marie Rice

Why Was This In My TBR:Got it on sale and it has been languishing in my TBR ever since

Is It Part of A Series: Men of Midnight (4.5)

Rating: This novella turned out to be one wacky epilogue for Lauren and Jacko from Midnight Vengeance. Jacko is still as gaga for sweet, dainty, perfect Lauren as ever but for some unknown reason, Lauren has not answered any of his many marriage proposals. Jacko is convinced that bad blood runs through his veins thanks to his awful mother and childhood. All Jacko longs for is to make Lauren his so of course when Jacko receives some unexpected news about his past, Jacko leaves Lauren to learn more WITHOUT TELLING LAUREN WHERE OR WHY. In fact, he calls her from the road but doesn’t speak a word into the phone. Lauren, perfect Lauren, of course patiently waits. As much as I usually love Lisa Marie Rice’s crazy obsessive lovers, this really strained all belief. I’m going to have to reread some early Midnight romances for some pure obsessive alpha crazy like Suzanne and John or Claire and Bud crazy.

Midnight Quest is a standalone novella in the Men of Midnight series, and is a sequel to Jacko and Lauren's story told in Midnight Vengeance. If you haven't read any of the original Midnight series, or the spinoff Men of Midnight series, I highly recommend them. They are a tight mix of action, suspense and erotic romance with very alpha male characters and women who possess strong will and inner strength.

Because this is a sequel to a story that had a happy ending, this couple is already in love. Jacko and Lauren have a solid relationship, but Jacko hadn't really thought about what comes next - until the day he comes home from his latest assignment and Lauren reveals the happy news that she is pregnant. Jacko goes into shock. His own past is mostly a mystery, except for his drug addicted mother who died young. He is instantly stricken with thoughts of a horrendous childbirth and a deformed monstrous child. He decides that he needs to research his past immediately, find out his roots, and only then will he be able to accept the idea of being a father. Hence the title of the story - it's Jacko's quest to find out the truth of his past.

I really enjoyed this story. Even though the couple is already together, they still have to get through this rough patch. Lauren worries about Jacko who has disappeared. He calls her while on the road, but doesn't speak into his end of the phone, not knowing what to say. Lauren has faith that Jacko will return to her once he gets his issues sorted out. Friends of the couple, characters who've appeared in other books in the series all makes cameos here, showing their unique friendship and camaraderie that make each of the Midnight stories a delight to read. They hold vigil with Lauren as she waits for Jacko's return.

Jacko's quest takes him to several different southern states. I was so glad to see him finally find out parts of his past, enough to reassure him that the nightmares he envisions about his child won't come true. Of course it wouldn't be a Lisa Marie Rice book without a bad guy in the mix, and the second half of the story deals with a threat let loose by Jacko's investigation, as well as a surprising reunion. There are some sexy scenes between Jacko and Lauren (before and after his road trip) and we get a happy ending to the tale and a sweet epilogue. Easy to read on its own, with enough details about Lauren and Jacko's relationship to ensure new readers won't feel left out, this is a treat for faithful readers of the series. 4. 5 stars.

The author provided me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review

Another brilliant book of Lisa Marie Rice!!!

We're back with Jacko and Lauren. I confess that Jacob caught my attention when he appeared in Midnight Man, and I was definitely hoping his story when he appeared in Midnight Angel.
Midnight Quest brings us happy and passionate Jacko, making plans for the future when unexpected news leads him to face his demons. Devils that Lauren is the only one to know he has.
Jacko part to a return to his past, leaving Lauren anxious and worried ... but Lauren knows that Jacko is not well, and his calls to her only confirm this.
Jacko is surprised by what he discovers, and he believed to have buried all his demons, but to scour his past he ends up becoming the target of a madman, and this will put Jacko face to face with someone unexpected.
Read, it is marvelous!!!

Morton "Jacko" Jackman was crazy about girlfriend, Lauren. She meant everything to him. He'd had a terrible childhood, his salvation being the SEALs. His teammates were his only family until he met Lauren. She was the very air he breathed. Until she told him she was pregnant. Then he couldn't breathe at all.

After Lauren's shocking announcement, Jacko walked out on her. He gets a friend of his to look up his mother, wanting to find out as much about his background as possible. He's never wanted to know where he came from before but now that he's having a child of his own, he's worried about whose blood flows through its veins. He heads to California where he learns his grandparents owned property that now belongs to him as next of kin. In doing so, however, he also puts himself and Lauren in danger. Now a dangerous criminal is on his tail.

I won't say anything more because I don't want to give anything away. I will say the suspense is very good, the characters are great, and it's got a really good love story. I read it in one sitting. If you like the Midnight books then you don't want to miss this one.

I used to love Lisa Marie Rice's books. I really liked her over the top characters and storylines. But recently her books are going downhill, they are worse and worse. It's as if she doesn't care to spend too much time on them anymore and is in a rush to deliver. This last book was her worst so far. About 50% of the book was just rambling around and filling the pages to get to a certain amount of pages. At some point she spends 5 or 6 pages describing in great detail the nightmare Jacko has about Lauren being pregnant with a monster (a real one) and how the monster kills her when getting out of her. I guess she tried to go with an "Alien" vibe there? anyway, 5-6 pages of that? it was ludicrous. Doesn't she have an editor anymore? Not sure what she will come up with next, but I really hope she starts paying more attention to what she writes. This book gave me the impression she wrote it in a few days and never looked back.

I Love Lisa Marie Rice and I am never disappointed with her books. Jacko (Morton) Jackman and his lady Lauren Dare who we met in Midnight Vengeance are back for a continuation of their story in this short. And what a continuation it is! Jacko isn't afraid of anything but Lauren is about to give him some news that will put him in a tailspin and set him on a path that will change his life forever. It sets him on a Journey that will solve some of the Mysteries of his childhood and will unknowingly bring danger to their front door! I throughly enjoyed this story. I loved Jacko's and Lauren's characters the first time around and it was great to see some more added to their story! Thanks Lisa Marie Rice Please Keep All the Great Stories coming!

I know I probably shouldn't have, but I found myself laughing when Jacko freaked out. It was easy to understand why he freaked out and I loved that he went to Felicity to help him get answers. While I hated that Lauren felt abandoned, I loved that once she took time to think things through she realized Jacko had a good reason. I loved how she talked to Jacko when he reached out to her, even if he didn't talk himself.

I really loved that Jacko found all the answers he wanted now that he had so much at stake. While he missed a lot not knowing, knowing there was more seemed to put his mind at ease.

No
Sa di brodo allungato? Abbastanza

In Midnight Quest by Lisa Marie Rice, Jacko is still in disbelief that Lauren wants to be with him. Beneath the tough alpha, former Navy SEAL exterior, Jacko is insecure and doesn't feel quite worthy of a woman like Lauren. Lauren just loves Jacko. Nothing she does feeds into his belief, it's all his. When an unexpected turn of events with Lauren throws Jacko completely off, he takes off to delve into a past that haunts him - a past he's never truly escaped from in his mind. He finally realizes he needs answers to put the past to rest... The answers aren't what he expects though, and with them they bring not only answers and some peace, but an unpredicted danger that threatens not only Jacko, but the woman he loves.

I could feel the love between Jacko and Lauren in Midnight Quest, and the bond they share is strong. Strong enough, I hoped to see them through what is happening. Lauren is a mature, strong heroine. She understands Jacko and needs him in her life like she needs to breath. She understands that whatever he is doing is necessary for him, but at the same time she is worried and a little scared about what will happen. I liked the trust she has, even when she's working through those doubtful moments. Her loyalty and love for Jacko really shine through in Midnight Quest. I really liked Jacko too. I could feel for him and understand him. He's come a long way from his past with the help of some good people in his past and present. I liked that he was 'running' with a purpose, but I wasn't as keen on him just taking off on Lauren. She is so good with him though, and the contact they do have while he is gone warmed my heart. These are two mature characters, and the lack of angst when things didn't always goes as planned was so great, and made these people even more realistic.

The very unexpected plot twist that Lisa Marie Rice weaves in brings danger and more uncertainty at the same time it brings some answers. I loved how she did this!! The new characters added spice to the story, and one in particular character helped the story feel just right. The danger was real, and the situation believable. Lisa Marie Rice brings together the romance and the suspense very well. I liked how she did this, so that both plots end up being very central to the overall story line. Clear and well written, Midnight Quest has great flow to it.

In Midnight Quest Lisa involves characters from previous Men of Midnight books, and they are important to the story. The Men of Midnight are a close group, good friends and they look out for on another. I liked the adult relationships they had and the closeness. I felt like these were people I'd love to be friends with! My opinion is that Midnight Quest can be read as a stand alone, but it is so much more enjoyable if you read the whole series and get to know all of the secondary characters more personally. They are a great group of people, and this stands out strongly. It felt good to feel like I was part of this group, even if only for a little while!

I love this whole series, and Midnight Quest was no exception. I'd highly recommend Midnight Quest by Lisa Marie Rice to any romantic suspense reader.

Y Jacko echa a correr.

This is timed after the 4th book in the series.

This takes us back to our couple in book 1. Something happens to the couple and it sends our hero running away. He just shuts right down until he feels he needs answers and goes looking for them - in his past.

Meanwhile our heroine holds down the home surrounded by their friends. The friends look after our hero.

The hero, while out searching for some answers, also finds some new and important information. This shocks him and he knows he has his answers now and can deal with what’s happened. However, trouble and a new connection interconnect, and we have some endings and some new beginnings.

It was nice to get to know the past of one of the main characters and then build upon it. I loved how our hero looked up one of the most influential people in his life and went to see them from that perspective. Overall, shorter in length but it was great for this to flash out the hero’s past which influenced his future.

This is more about Jacko and an insight into his past. He never knew his father or if he had any grandparents. When he finds out that Lauren is pregnant he has a panic attack bolts. He feels like he is not good enough for her or their baby. So he decides to go to find answers about his past. On this trip he goes dark to everyone including his girlfriend. This was something that he needed to do. But to go dark on everyone was wrong. But what happens makes this book one of my favorites. His past is not all dead and gone. But there are bad guys who want to wipe him out. Ones who he knows nothing about. Will he and Lauren ever get married and and will he finally find contentment with his past when it merges with his present?

Jacko spent some of his formative years with a drug addict mom never knowing who his father was. But since he’d met Lauren, Jacko thought he had everything he’d ever need. But when Lauen had news Jacko didn’t want to hear, he left for work, left work to find answers from his past several states away; Lauren got calls from Jacko from the road and had one-sided conversations begging him to come home. Before chapter 5, this reader was over the weak leads (one note Jacko and bland doormat Lauren) in a weaker storyline that got better rushing toward a more exciting ending. Some things are futile.
