A Torch in His Heart Lib/E

Rate this book
In the long lost ancient past, two men fought over the girl with eyes like the Bosporus under a summer sky. It ended badly. She died. They died.

Since then, they have all tumbled through time, reborn over and over again. Now they are all here, in the same place, the same time and what began so long ago must finally come to an end.

Ask Helle Madsen what she thinks about reincarnation and she’ll laugh in your face. Besides, Helle has other stuff to handle, what with her new, exciting job in London and her drop-dead but seriously sinister boss, Sam Woolf. And then one day Jason Morris walks into her life and despite never having clapped eyes on him before, she recognises him immediately. Very weird. Even more weird is the fact that Sam and Jason clearly hate each other’s guts. Helle’s life is about to become extremely complicated and far too exciting.

Anna Belfrage

Anna was raised abroad, on a pungent mix of Latin American culture, English history and Swedish traditions. As a result she's multilingual and most of her reading is historical- both non-fiction and fiction. Possessed of a lively imagination, she has drawers full of potential stories, all of them set in the past. She was always going to be a writer - or a historian, preferably both. Ideally, Anna aspired to becoming a pioneer time traveller, but science has as yet not advanced to the point of making that possible. Instead she ended up with a degree in Business and Finance, with very little time to spare for her most favourite pursuit. Still, one does as one must, and in between juggling a challenging career Anna raised her four children on a potent combination of invented stories, historical debates and masses of good food and homemade cakes. They seem to thrive…

For years she combined a challenging career with four children and the odd snatched moment of writing. Nowadays Anna spends most of her spare time at her writing desk. The children are half grown, the house is at times eerily silent and she slips away into her imaginary world, with her imaginary characters. Every now and then the one and only man in her life pops his head in to ensure she's still there.

No one does passion and romance quite like Anna Belfrage! Breaking away from her historical series, Belfrage is back to wow readers with a unique story of love, revenge, drama, and doing whatever possible to be with your soulmate...even live through countless lives to find them again.

Helle, Jason, and Sam are trapped in an endless loop of reincarnation. Connected by an invisible thread, each man on their own mission with Helle caught between them - one man who wants to posses her and one who simply wants to love and protect her. Through Anna's masterful storytelling readers are taken on an adventure of the senses. Intrigue, danger, sexiness - this book has it all in spades!

"You used to wear it longer." Helle touched his hair. "It used to be long enough to braid." Now where did that come from? Her hand trembled as she lowered it.

"And you used to braid it, remember?"

No of course she didn't. She'd never met him before, except that she was swamped by an image of him sitting in front of her, and she working her way through his hair. It was hot and dusty, in the distance she could see the dark blue of the sea, and...I'm going crazy, she thought, stumbling down to a nearby bench. She just had to sit down before she fainted or something.

If you're looking for a fun escape from the world then I highly recommend A Torch in His Heart! Grab a soft blanket, a yummy hot chocolate and settle in with this exciting book - you can thank me later! Be prepared for sexy times ahead!

Romance is not my usual stomping ground, but A Torch in His Heart was difficult to ignore. I’ve read nearly all of Anna Belfrage’s books and couldn’t help being curious about the project, so I took my chances and jumped in with an open mind.

In terms of content, A Torch in His Heart is a hot and steamy read. Belfrage has never shied from love scenes, but she explored new territory here and I liked how the action complemented the tone of the narrative. That said, I’m drawn to themes and have to say that while I felt both elements strong, I preferred the ideas at the heart of the story.

Love is a tangible theme in Belfrage’s historical and time-slip novels, but her earlier works focus on the effects of love, how it influences both those who have it and those who don’t and what people will endure for the sake of it. The fact that Jason and Helle are not limited to single lifetime allowed Belfrage to treat their connection differently and I enjoyed the implied undertones of that gave the story. There is something raw and ethereal in how Belfrage treats the emotional relationship and it struck a chord in me.

I will note that the story reminded me of Gwendolyn Womack’s The Memory Painter, but the mechanics of A Torch in His Heart felt stronger and more defined. Belfrage put a lot of thought into the process of reincarnation and I think her ideas translated quite beautifully to the page. I liked the characters a great deal and was hooked by the cliffhanger. Helle comes into her own in the final chapters of the book and I am eager to see where Belfrage will take that strength as the story moves forward.

I have, at this point, read all but one of Ms. Belfrage’s historical fiction books. This new series is a bit of a departure from both her time traveling Graham Saga or her Midieval King’s Greatest Enemy series. Rather than time travelers this book features beings that have reincarnated through time. It’s a tale as old as time as we have two men fighting over one woman. One good, one evil.

I will warn you, don’t start this book unless you have the time to read it through ’cause it’s going to grab you from the first page and you are going to have a hard time putting it down. The book introduces the reader to Helle first – the woman who drives the passions of the two men. One of those men is Sam. a rich, powerful and driven businessman. He wants to possess her. The second is Jason who is also a handsome businessman but he wants to love and protect her.

Helle does not remember her past lives but Jason and Sam do. When she meets Sam he somehow seems to exert a control over her she does not understand. If she looks into his eyes she seems to lose her free will. On the other hand, when she meets Jason for the first time it’s as if she has known him forever. He also gets her away from Sam so for that she is grateful but she does not want to believe what he is telling her about their entwined lives. But it does explain some of the dreams that she has.

The three of them are together in the same time again and this time Jason is determined to have his happily ever after and Sam is determined to vanquish Jason and possess Helle. Who will survive in this lifetime?

This is a page turner of a book. It’s full of sexy and compelling characters. This is an all out battle of good versus evil and you are not sure at any point which side is going to win. Sam is a man who feels the world should bow to him and his power and Jason is what is known as a Wanderer – they have special healing powers but they can be used in inappropriate ways and Jason knows he has done so when it comes to Sam.

I found this to be a riveting tale. I opened the book and didn’t want to stop reading. It’s a very sexy book so if you are not comfortable with sex scenes in your reading this will not be the book for you. I will look forward to the next volume to see what happens next in the lives of these three beings. Ms. Belfrage has created yet another complex world full of fascinating characters to thrill her readers.

This is the first in The Wanderer series, a new endeavour for Ms Belfrage as she steps into uncharted territory. A Torch in His Heart is an emotional, sexy, supernatural thriller from this accomplished writer of eclectic talents. Here again, Belfrage proves herself just as comfortable writing something hot and steamy as she is writing Historical Romance and Time-slip which, I might add, both of her series in these genres are not without some sexy scenes. But what he have here is not your usual erotic thriller, but something very different that takes from a variety of genres, for it has love, sex, a bit of history and time-slip as well as adventure and scenes of the nail-biting type. This is not just about the sex, as one might think, this has plenty of story, plenty of emotional and psychological tension to it and its beautifully written as is anything this writer does.

So, what is the premise? Well, the story is set in mostly contemporary times, with a back story that is shown through flashbacks. Helle and Jason meet and straight away the attraction is so intense. But is it a case of love at first sight or is there something driving this? Jason knows the truth, but Helle doesn't, even if she does know that somehow, through some strange force, she knows this attractive red-haired man and yet, she knows she has never met him before. Or has she. Then there is the strange, mesmerising Woolf, her new boss at her new employment. Why does he look at her as though she's a juicy streak on a plate? And act all macho as though she belongs to him when she's just his employee? To top it all off, she starts having dreams and she is so confused and then one day Jason tells her the secret and she is even more freaked out. Its like, what the hell is going on?

What did I like about this book? Well, for starters, Ms Belfrage knows how to weave a story that has an enjoyable, interesting plot. Her writing is well done, and she knows how to execute a scene with excellent pace and extraordinary tension.

"Hello, Helle." Wolf was sitting beside her. Helle's heart pounded, her nostrils widened, inhaling his distinctive scent. She made a mewling sound and pressed herself against the door. Wolf stretched, took hold of her seatbelt and fastened it. "Drive," he ordered before raising the partition. He smiled at Helle - an ice cold stretching of lips that revealed his teeth."Alone at last, hey?" He held her eyes, she tried to close them. His voice echoed in her head, there was an increasing thudding behind her ears, and her back broke out into a sweat. The car hit a bump, jolting them both. He cursed, she squished her eyes shut.
His fingers grazed her cheek. "Afraid of me?" "Yes," she croaked, without opening her eyes. He laughed. "Wise girl. But just so you know, so far I haven't even tried to frighten you." He moved closer. "Imagine how terrified you will be when I do."
So subtle is the fear that this man creates is a testimony to the talent of this wonderful writer. She knows how to not over do a scene, to create just the right amount of tension and sense of dread. Wolf is one of those characters that if we were to meet him in real life, we'd describe him as not being able to put a finger on it. What is it about him that made even my neck prickle. He is narcissistic, arrogant and smug, but at the same time, his raw sensuality thrusts itself in your face, that smile, that could force you on your knees to bend to his will -, the handsome yet devilish features... He is so cleverly drawn.

The main characters, the young Helle and Jason, their names both based on mythical characters, are the archetypal starcrossed lovers: she is blonde, blue-eyed and as supple as a gazelle, and he, Jason, the muscular, red-head with eyes like a golden sunset. I fancy myself as a beautiful blonde, blue-eyed goddess, just so I can get to the lovely Jason! But their story is not so lovely, well not all of it anyway. They have a past that no one would ever want to repeat, but they are forced by powers beyond their control, to keep searching for each other and when they do find each other, they then have to run the gauntlet of Woolf, who also must relive his torment over and over again.

As far as the sex is concerned, if you have read any of Ms Belfrage's books you will know how well she does these scenes, but in A Torch in his Heart, the sex is more graphic, more raw, but is an integral part of Jason and Helle's story. To really get to feel the love that plagues these two, one has to get to the nitty gritty, and the nitty gritty is where is is. But they are not in the same league as Fifty Shades - no, Belfrage is in a much higher league, and her writing is tasteful and written with loving fingers. Without the love and the sex, there would be no Jason and Helle.

I have never been one to pick up a book purely for the sex, and that is not why I am happy to recommend this lovely story that will touch all your romantic hearts. I recommend this because it is a book that has it all, love, sex, tragedy, magic, and nail-biting tension. You just can't go wrong.

This book just got better and better as it went on. Initially I had problems with the characters. Jason was wet, Helle was helpless and Sam... What can I say? He really triggered me. A nasty, manipulative and villainous version of Christian Grey? To be fair, alpha males and bad boys are not my thing but I persevered and I was glad I did. I have never rated a book by how much I liked or disliked a character and this novel ended up being an enthralling read. There is a lot of explicit sexual content, not much fades to black, but what would you expect from a three thousand year old romance on hold? Jason grew on me as the story unfolded, Sam became increasingly horrible, Helle vascillated from time to time but grew emotionally throughout. Some readers might be upset by Sam's violent behaviour towards women, others may well lap it up. Certainly a fascinating story.

Who would be able to resist a story that's been building over millennia, that's full of passion, danger, and revenge? Definitely not me!

The idea that we are all reincarnated throughout time constantly searching for that one person whom our soul needs to feel complete - that's been Jason's existence and will continue to be until he is finally able to find Helle. The glitch in all this - Samion, the other person who thinks Helle belongs to him and him alone but in the most dark and depraved way. Samion wants Helle so he can simply posses her and do as he pleases to her. It's Jason that Helle truly loves and who she wants to be with but that won't happen if Samion has his way.

Full of intense passion, deep seeded anger, other worldly souls and a love that will continue until time runs out, A Torch in His Heart will fully engross you in its pages.

Thanks to the author, the publisher and Passages to the Past for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Excellent. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Anna Belfrage, well-known for historical and time-travel romance, has ventured into new territory with this contemporary paranormal romance offering. Here’s a description from social media of A Torch in his Heart: In life, after life, he’s searched the world for her, the girl he loved and lost 3000 years ago. Now, he’s found her. Unfortunately, so has the man who destroyed them in the past... A timeless and dark romance.

This story totally grabbed my attention from the first page—the first paragraph, even. This is how the story begins: His eyes snapped open. She was here! Jason Morris lay without breathing, without moving, his heart racing in his chest. Yes. She was here, he was sure of it. He took a deep breath, a ragged sound that tore through the silent darkness of the large bedroom. Finally, after all these years, he had found her. Once hooked by this beginning, I found myself drawn deeper and deeper into the story and was captivated until the very end.

Ms. Belfrage has a beautiful writing style. Her descriptions paint a vivid picture. The characters feel real. Her villains are always truly villainous (Samion definitely doesn't disappoint in this regard). I really enjoyed the way the characters’ pasts were revealed little-by-little throughout the story. It was cleverly done, and I found the backstory quite fascinating.

One thing Anna Belfrage’s readers will find different in this book compared with the two previous series is that A Torch in His Heart has more erotic content. The sex scenes are more frequent, more descriptive and in my opinion, executed extremely well.

In conclusion, this is a compelling and suspenseful story, and a brilliant foray into new territory by author Anna Belfrage. Five stars.

I'm confused. People really like this book. It has everything you could want in a book:romance, suspense, time slipping, adventure. But...I didn't like this book at all. The characters seemed flat and one dimensional. And the hero acted like a jerk. He would be mean to her, then realize his mistake and run back to her. Did he learn nothing after doing this over and over again through the centuries? All of the characters just annoyed me.

I've always been fascinated by reincarnation, particularly the thought of being able to remember past lives. After reading A Torch in His Heart, I'm reminded, be careful what you wish for. What if you lived thousands of years ago and reincarnated over and over again just to find the love of your soul again…and make up for the tragedy that ended both your lives? Sounds thrilling, but there's a dark underside to that and this story shows both.
Helle and Jason first found each other lifetimes ago in the region now known as Turkey. Theirs was a searing love and they were truly soul mates. But Prince Samion, who wanted Helle for the power their union would bring, would have none of that and sought to destroy them in that life and every subsequent lives ever since.
Anna Belfrage has strayed from her historical roots (not entirely too far, because we are given a taste of the past from the passages of Helle and Jason's past) to explore a contemporary romantic thriller and delivers a steamy love story with dark, complex human themes of jealousy, control and betrayal. Even though Jason has loved Helle for eons and has been searching for her in every lifetime, they still have to navigate past heartache, deep-seated fears and tragedy to rebuild their love in the present. Prince Samion (Sam Woolfe) is an absolutely chilling villain with his single-minded focus on destroying them. He's dark, malevolent and pure evil. Every time he appeared, my insides were turning to jelly. What's even more disturbing is how Woolfe manages to isolate Helle by subverting those she would normally rely on the most. He's holds a position of chilling power and does not shy away from evoking it even making Helle to question at times his intentions or his ability to destroy her.
A Torch in His Heart blends the paranormal, contemporary romance with a bit of historical flavour all in an exciting thriller.

A Torch in His Heart by Anna Belfrage is a time slip story of Jason, Helle and Sam. The two men have been searching for Helle for over 2000 years. In an earlier life, as a young girl, Helle had died, Currently, Helle is a successful woman and starts working for Sam. In a short time, Sam starts to show his true self, being sexually intrusive, making things very difficult for Helle, that he will have Helle no matter what, even if it means killing Jason and forcing Helle to do as he wishes. Nothing matters to Sam then to have what he has been after for so long. Helle tried to quit her job but Sam is insistent that she keep working for him. She finally has the courage to just not report to work and take her chances with Jason. After that, the friction between the three increases until Jason and Helle are fighting for their lives

Helle had few memories of her long ago past, or any other lives she had, Jason fills her in on most everything, he does keep from her how serious Sam is to fulfill his destiny. It takes Helle awhile to come to terms with what is happening. What transpires is a dangerous, suspenseful paranormal steamy romance that will keep you turning the pages. I have read everything, except for a novel or two in her Graham saga and I have to say that she never disappoints. I love a time travel story and this one is unique in that it involves more than one past live.

I look forward to the next in the series, The Wanderer which continues the story of Jason and Helle.

I was completely blown away by Anna's new novel. The characters Helle and Jason had my heart from the very beginning. The heat the words ignite in the readers mind were intense and very realistic. Although the story was about reincarnation and following your soulmate through lifetime and lifetime,  I still felt very connected to the plot and the outcome right away.

Helle Madsen comes to her new job in London ready to make an impression. Once Sam Woolf lays eyes on her, he immediately becomes gruff and scary. Helle gets afraid but quickly explains away their first meeting as a fluke. Then she meets Jason, the man she has been dreaming about since she could remember her dreams and although she doesn't get it, she knows she has met him before and she knows she loves him. When Jason tells her their story she is skeptical at best and they fight based on Helle not wanting to believe the preposterous events he describes from century's ago but still she can't stay away......

To say I was captivated by the words, love story, plot etc would not be enough. This book devoured me and wouldn't let go till I finished. Now I want the next book before I go insane. Pick up this book and other books by this author. Her writing is exquisite.

Can you imagine living one life after another searching for your lover and every time you find her you’ll see her die?
This is Jason’s destiny, seeing her loved Helle killed on the hands of his enemy, he has been cursed to see the fate of her lover again and again till his enemy, the dominant Woolf, will conquer Helle’s heart and win it over him. This is a story inside a story, where centuries of lives are mixed together to create the present one, the definitive story of these two powerful men fighting for the love of Helle; Woolf is ready to kill anyone to have Helene’s heart but Jason is ready to die to save her loved one. Who will win? Of course you’ll have to read this book to discover the truth.
This had been a sensual and hot story, full of secondary characters that make the story more interesting and guessing which will be the next move of our main protagonists; the only problem is that this is the first book of this story, so there’s no ending yet for it and I have to admit that I didn’t know this was just the first part, I prefer when the story is told in just one book, because I would have waited till all the story is published!
This had been an entertaining read, full of passion but at the same time an interesting story to make this an engaging read, the characters are well written, even if sometimes you don’t exactly like their actions, always the motive is love.
There are a lot of open doors and unanswered questions at the end of the book, I hope we’ll know more about the story in the next book, and more about Jason’s mother, a Wanderer’s story is always interesting to discover!
If you are looking for a love story with vengeance, passion and a little bit of history, this book is for you. If you are searching for a different story, take a chance on “A Torch In His Heart”, I am sure it will surprise you!

What a great premise - a reincarnation story with an eternal triangle, brought bang up to date in a contemporary setting.
The beautifully-realised characters - Ms. Belfrage's strong suit in her other novels - have been playing out their two-guys-one-girl problem for thousands of years; but this time it's all or nothing. The tensions between them have been screwed to breaking point; which man will Helle choose? Can Sam's dominating powers force her choice, or will the true love that Jason offers win the day?
An exciting storyline, well-rounded characters (with a very cool backstory!), and thoroughly steamy sex scenes - this book is well worth a read.
And more to come, hopefully - I'm interested in the myth structure of this world, now!

You can say that my attention was grabbed as soon as I cracked open the pages of this book and started reading it. I was swept away by the past and the present lives of Helle, Sam, and Jason. Ms. Belfrage wrote a rich story with developed characters. Yet, as much as I loved this book; I did not feel like I even scratched the layers of the three characters. There is so many more questions that I have that I know will be answered in the second book. Thus the reason I am ordering the second book.

Sam is the evil Prince and Helle's intended match from her past. Yet, as you can guess, she fell for Jason. Now the three are battling for power and love in the present day.

The author did a great job of intertwining the past with the present. Dipping in and out seamlessly. This book is more of the set up to what I expect to be a big show down in the next book. There was not a lot of action that took place in this book. Just the back story of who everyone was/is.

Absolutely loved it!

I was pulled into Jason and Helle's story from the very first page. Absolutely fantastic. Reincarnated time and time again and always in danger from Wolfe. What I didn't like was being left hanging at the end! Really not fair because now I'll have to wait to see what happens with Jason!

Awesome Story

I enjoyed this book so much so that I absolutely hated to finish it. Jason actually reminds me of Matthew in the way that he is in total all consuming love with his mate. Strong yet gentle. Helle is a hesitate hellion whom I enjoyed seeing her transition to understanding her purpose. Loved it and can't wait for the next book.

4.5 rounded to 5

A Torch in His Heart by Anna Belfrage is a seductive, atmospheric, and intoxicating romantic fantasy thriller.

I have never read anything by Belfrage before, but this book absolutely made me a fan. I thought her writing style is immensely mesmerizing, sultry, unexpected, and affecting. Within the first few pages, I found myself completely enamored and could not stop reading. Belfrage's storytelling is just so incredibly magnetic that even when some parts moved relatively slow, I was still really invested and intrigued.

The plot is engaging, suspenseful, twisty, and sensual. There's plenty of tension, drama, and heartbreak that kept me turning the pages. It's brutally intense at times, but the delicious anticipation of what will or will not happen had me on edge in the most amazing ways. I also liked the flashbacks and slowly learning what truly happened between Helle, Jason and Sam. I thought the concept of reincarnation was really interesting and I enjoyed the fantasy elements. The romance was scorching and sexy. I loved the chemistry between Jason and Helle and also liked their playful bantering. But what I really liked most about this story was the raw and relatable emotional aspects that left a wonderful burning feeling in my heart. Being able to feel and experience what the characters were going through was harrowing, but also satisfyingly exhilarating.

I loved all the characters and thought they were well-rounded. They're perfectly flawed, wonderfully realistic and fascinating individuals that made me feel so many emotions. They're deeply tangled in their own turmoil, anguish, and inner desires. I cared about them all in one way or another and wanted them to just be happy.

Sam is the absolute perfect villain - brutal, menacing, vindictive and cruel. He's manipulative and will stop at nothing to get his revenge. He's filled with so much pain, anger, and hate. I shouldn't care what happens to Sam... he is the villain afterall and has been preventing Helle and Jason from being together. Yet, there's something about him that made my heart ache. I'm not sure how I'll feel about Sam later on, but for now... even knowing everything I know about him, I'm not completely convinced he's purely evil. I'm really rooting for him to have a change of heart and redeem himself in the end.

Jason is the hero you dream about. He's brave, determined, and passionate. He wants nothing but to protect Helle and just love her. He's genuinely good and has such a big heart. However, he's not without faults. He's insecured and have made plenty of mistakes throughout the centuries. He can be impulsive at times and impatient. But, it's those imperfections that makes him so much more lovable and the kind of hero who'll steal a piece of your heart.

I adored Helle and really enjoyed her character development. She’s vulnerable in so many ways, but she's also fierce, courageous, and driven. She's caring, kind, and forgiving. I love that Helle fights for what she believes in, speaks her mind, and loves with all her heart and soul. Of course she sometimes doubts herself and makes rash decisions, but she overcomes her fears and admits her faults. She definitely grew into the type of heroine I root for and admire.

Aside from a few awkward moments and dialogues here and there, I truly enjoyed and loved reading this book. I thought it was a unique story and I really liked the concept and themes. It was an addictive read and I never wanted it to end.

A breathtaking and exquisitely written tale of passion, betrayal, revenge and love, A Torch in His Heart ignites, thrills, and surprises. Anna Belfrage beautifully balances intrigue, angst, humor, suspense and romance leaving readers utterly desperate for more. It's so irresistibly twisty, steamy, and exciting and I honestly cannot recommend it enough!

I received a free copy of this book from the author for participating in a blog tour hosted by TLC Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Rating ~3.5 stars.

When I first read the blurb of A Torch in his Heart, I was very interested, even though I like to avoid love triangles and hate them with a passion of a thousand suns but the premise seemed fascinating enough (along with the supernatural element) that I decided to give it a go and I’m glad I did. Also technically speaking it isn’t a love triangle more a story of a couple and the crazy psycho who wants to possess the girl.

Helle, Jason and Sam are stuck in what seems like an endless loop of reincarnations, where Jason and Sam both search for Helle, find her only for it to end in all their deaths. In their first life, Helle and Jason were best friends and in love before Helle was forced to marry Sam who was as evil then, as he is now. Current Helle Madsen has just gotten a job working under Sam Woolf, who seems to be obsessed with her and Jason Morris who wake up to the knowledge that Helle is near, finds himself searching for her to save her from Sam.

Helle and Jason had great chemistry, from the moment they met Helle was entranced by Jason. Even though Helle might not remember all the details of their previous lives as Jason does, she feels a connection to him which along with the little flashes of knowing make her even more confused of who he is to her. While for Jason, being with Helle is wonderful, regardless of everything else, he loves and wants to protect her.

We get to see their current as well as their previous life story unfold, which added a lot more depth to the story, it makes you understand Jason’s motivation and Helle and Jason’s love which ended in a tragedy due to decisions not of their own. I really liked reading the flashbacks, some were sweet and some were filled with heartbreak. There’s also the element of supernatural, along with the reincarnation Jason, Helle and Sam seem to posses power. I found this to be very interesting and I hope they get more explored in the next book. I would like to know more about being a wanderer.

Quibbles: There are certain bits in the book that made me frustrated, which affected my rating of the book. Firstly, Helle goes through the cycle of I believe him, I don’t believe him, I’m in love with him but also think he’s crazy. I just didn’t understand her behaviour because she did know some things from their past life (esp when she met Jason) but then she’d ask Jason to not mention their previous life/doesn’t believe it. Which was weird because Sam is after them, she knows that yet…I also wasn’t a fan of some of Jason’s behaviour either, in his past life the misunderstanding that led to this, his current relationship with Juliet and the element of guilt that accompanies his quest to save Helle which made me less sold on them as a couple. When I first read the blurb, I wasn’t aware that this wasn’t a standalone but instead part of a series, and personally having read the first book I still don’t understand why the first book wasn’t expanded to conclude Jason and Helle’s story but as it is I’m intrigued to see where they end up.

Overall, it’s very well written, the plot is intricate. I did enjoy the flashbacks to their previous life and how they ended up in this cycle. I did go through a rollercoaster of emotions reading this. The story itself is pretty addicting, the drama, the angst, the crazy villain, the love lost and gained.

Helle never believed in reincarnation until she met Jason. For some reason, her heart remembers Jason. He claims that they were lovers in a past life thousands of years ago and that he has been searching for her in every single one of his lives since then. This life was the first one since their original life that he was successful in finding her. They have such deep chemistry with one another that Helle believes that Jason could be telling the truth. When he shows her his powers, she believes him even more. But then Jason explains to her that someone else has been looking for her for thousands of years as well and has managed to find her at the same time.

Sam Woolf is Helle’s boss. She wanted the job originally because it paid well, and she knew she had the chance to start her career. Then, Woolf starts to make her uncomfortable. Whenever Helle looks into his eyes, shivers run down her spine. She forgets how to think, and can’t seem to say no to him, no matter how hard she tries. When Jason says that he is the one coming after her, everything begins to make sense. But there is only one person that Woolf has hated in all his lives, and that was the Wanderer Jason. Now, he has the chance to get rid of the Wanderer once and for all, and to take Helle back to be his own.

I loved how this story seamlessly flowed between Jason and Helle’s past and current lives together. As you read along, you learn more and more about their life thousands of years ago. Reincarnation is such an interesting topic, and this book shows how this theme can work very well in a romance novel. They were younger in their past lives, but they were just as madly in love. Jason remembers all his past lives, including the ones spent alone without Helle. Helle only remembers bits and pieces from her life thousands of years ago, but she doesn’t seem to remember any lives before that. As Jason explains the lives to Helle, Helle has dreams every night that can be read where the previous life is shown. That is something that Belfrage does excellently, even though a character may “tell” another character something, that same event is also “shown” in a dream sequence. There were no long montages of Jason rambling about past lives, everything was also vibrantly shown through Helle’s fragmented dreams.

The only thing that I truly didn’t like in this story was when Helle’s friend Alison was hurt. She goes to discuss it with Helle, and Helle’s response was “You’ll get over it.” They were having an argument at the time, so I can understand why Helle might be a bit upset. But telling your friend who is clearly suffering that she will “get over it” is not the best of advice. This scene was quickly over, but it is just one example of how Helle can be a bit blunt and even cruel at times to people who do care about her in the grand scheme of things. I did like that Helle wasn’t perfect, but this is an awfully cruel flaw to have.

Other than that short scene, the book was amazing overall. This is a steamy romance, but I liked that the characters weren’t just blindly having sex. They truly cared for one another, and this was just how they showed their love for one another. It made them feel more like true lovers than most “true loves” in romance novels. This again tied into the well-thought-out plot of reincarnation.

Overall, this was a lovely novel. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a new adult fantasy romance book to indulge in.

I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.

A Torch in His Heart is a dark romance in which three people live and re-live the lives they started 3000 years ago, each trying to finally get it right this time. Do they? We don't know for sure, because this one is very much a to be continued...

The two male characters--Jason and Sam/Samion--have a leg up on Helle, because each life that they live they know more about the past ones they've led than she does. Samion, according to Jason, is born knowing what has already happened and is aware of what his goals are and why. Jason always finds out somewhere around his pre-teen years, but Helle, whose POV this story is told in here, has only vague dreams and uneasy feelings about things unless one of the others (this time it's Jason, it's not really clear when or if this particular situation has happened before since their original time around, with all three of them coming into cotact) clues her in about things--which of course, like any normal person, she has trouble believing.

So the reader here is a lot like Helle--a bit behind Jason and Samion, and trying to figure out what is going on, what happened three millennia ago, and how the two are related--and much of the book is taken up with explanations and flashbacks. Samion is very much the bad guy, though, then and now, so in between her "Wait, what???" moments Helle is often running for her life, literally or figuratively. And then just as everything really starts to come together, we're left with a cliffhanger-ish ending. Book 2 is out already ( Smoke in her Eyes ), but book 3 isn't yet, so be warned...

I found it a struggle at times to really like Jason and Helle, the couple we're supposed to be rooting for. He makes some pretty dodgy choices (their original past selves suffered a MAJOR misunderstanding that could have absolutely been solved by his actually listening to her) and she does a whole lot of bouncing around between I-believe-him/he's-crazy and I-love-him/I-barely-know-him which gets to be grating. I honestly don't know if I'll pick up the next book; I was more relieved to get to the end of this one--cliffhanger or no--than anything else.

Rating: 3 stars / C+

This book was INTENSE!

So going into this one, there are a few triggers that I’d like to mention such as abuse, sexual assault, and emotional trauma.

Within the first few pages, we are brought into the idea of reincarnation between a modern-day contemporary and a historical fantasy world set thousands of years ago.

We meet Helle who is trying to start her life with a new job in London. Little does she know that ‘fate‘ is honing in on her when she meets her mysterious new boss.

Who turns out to be the biggest, cocky jerk that I’ve read in a long time. Not only is he beyond-extremely possessive, but he stop from finding and ruining Helle’s life.

Thankfully, her soulmate quickly discovers her, attempting to recall the memory of their past lives and, eventually, trying to free her from the strong hold this other, very annoying Prince, has on her.

Even though this was such a dark, intense read, I absolutely could NOT stop reading!

The writing style does a great job in combining a contemporary and fantasy feel. And as you can probably tell from my thoughts so far, the author does an amazing job in conveying such strong emotions present in this book.

I will say, that there were times that I wasn’t a fan of how the characters reacted to certain situations, i.e. I would’ve been freaking out A LOT more if I was in her shoes, but overall, it’s up to the author to tell this particular romance.

And the romance. It’s passionate, heartwarming, and steamy. At the beginning, I was a little iffy on them since it felt like their relationship was strung out more than I would have liked, but at the same time, I couldn’t stop until I read it all!

I gave this book a solid 4 out of 5 stars. Again, I wasn’t a fan at all of one of the characters (you’ll quickly realize which one when you read it), and I was annoyed by him the ENTIRE book. But this just means the author did a fantastic job in creating her characters.

The ending left me wanting so much more, and I can’t wait to see where the series takes us through time and love!

“You know why I’m here,” Jason said. “I’m here for her...”

Three thousand years ago, Jason Morris lost the only woman he had ever loved. It was an agony like none he had ever experienced, it had torn at his soul and irrevocably broken his heart. He longed for death so the pain would stop. But for Jason, death was no escape. By the cruel hand of fate, he is on an endless loop of birth and death as he searches for his lost love through the ages.

However, Jason is not the only one who is on this endless cycle. The man who raped, tortured and murdered his beloved all those years ago is also on the same seemingly infinite journey. Sam Woolf has never forgotten, nor has he forgiven Jason. Time has not diminished his hatred. It has instead fanned the fire into a raging inferno. Helle was supposed to be his. She had deserved everything he had done to her and more for daring to choose a Wanderer over him.

Helle is determined to make a good impression on her first day working at Woolf & Partners. However, when she meets Sam Woolf her every instinct screams to run and never look back. Woolf looks at her as if she is something to eat and paralyses her with fear every time she looks into his eyes. However, she needs this job and the opportunities it could bring.

Jason has spent too many years and too many lives looking for Helle. Now that he has found her, he will do everything in his power to vanquish Woolf once and for all. This time he and Helle will have the life that was so cruelly snatched from them three thousand years ago.

Helle Madsen did not know why she knew Jason’s name or why he seemed so very familiar. But with him, she feels safe. With him, she feels loved. Moreover, as she comes to the shocking realisation that the dreams that haunt her nights are, in fact, memories, Helle cannot rebuke the truth that is standing right in front of her. If she wants to live, then Sam Woolf must die. It is time to stop running from the past. It is time to embrace it…

When the book slipped from my hand as I read the last sentence, only one word came to mind. “Wow!” A Torch In His Heart (The Wanderer #1) by Anna Belfrage is not only an intensely gripping story that spans over three thousand years, but it is also profoundly moving, wonderfully evocative and totally absorbing. The hours flew by as I lost myself in one of the greatest time-slip romantic journeys that I think I have been on this year. From the opening sentence, I was utterly enchanted, and by the end of the book, I was reaching for the Kleenex and crying out in anguish.

Belfrage presents her reader with two highly appealing protagonists. Jason’s story is utterly heartbreaking. In each life, by the age of 12 years old, he remembers who he was and all of the experiences that he has lived. He dedicates each life to finding Helle in the hope that he can protect her from Samion, Prince of Kolchis (Sam Woolf). However, each life brings a different set of challenges and yet, many times, Jason wanders the world without ever finding her. However, this time, it is different. Jason can sense her presence, and he is determined to do everything in his power to keep her safe. I absolutely adored Jason. He is genuine, loving and very human in the telling. In fact, that is a trait throughout this book. Belfrage creates incredibly believable characters, and they react to situations in a very human way. Jason’s nervousness at introducing himself to Helle, was incredibly sweet, his determination to keep her safe melted my heart. His character is beautifully drawn and so very compelling that I found it very difficult to put down this book. Never has a novel begged so much to be read in one sitting as A Torch In His Heart.

Like Jason, Helle is a fabulous protagonist. Her confusion as to what on earth was going on, kept me turning those pages well into the night. Unlike Jason and Woolf, Helle thinks that the dreams she has are just that, dreams. It is only later that she realises that these dreams are memories, and because of this, she does not listen to her gut-instinct with regards to Woolf. Woolf is highly unappealing and scares the life out of her. However, she is blind to the real danger of the man, and it isn’t until she meets Jason that things start to fall into place, although she has a terrible time accepting the truth of her situation, and even when she does she has moments of doubts, as would anyone in her situation.

The antagonist of this tale is, of course, Sam Woolf. He is vile, both in thought and mind. This book is very much a darkness and light story with him portrayed in the darkest of terms. Woolf is incredibly powerful, manipulative, and cruel. He is determined to get his own way, and he does not care what he has to do to achieve his aims. Woolf is exceedingly dangerous but also very intelligent and devious. To defeat such a foe will not be without considerable challenges, and Belfrage certainly does not make it easy for her protagonists. They live in constant fear of him. I loathed him from the beginning, but his obsessive determination certainly drove this story forward.

A Torch In His Heart is very much a time-slip novel. Although the majority of the story is set in the modern world, all of the back story is set in the ancient one. Both are rich and vibrant in the telling. The historical detailing of the ancient world has to be commended. It is wonderfully portrayed and rich in historical accuracy. It was interesting to witness the change the different eras had on all of the characters, but especially with regards to Woolf. Woolf’s ability to adapt and to embrace the dark underworld of modern life drove home how deplorable his character truly is. He is just awful, which I should imagine is precisely what Belfrage intended her readers to feel about him.

Despite the danger and the immediate threat to life, A Torch in His Heart is romantic and oh so sensual. The level of sensuality really suited this story. It is filled with passion, whether that be love or hate and the fact that both protagonists know that each hour could be their last together made their desperation for each other understandable. I think Belfrage got the balance between this compelling story and the love scenes just right.

A lot happens in this book, and there are many twists and turns — enough to keep a reader up all night! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and I cannot wait to get my hands on book #2 of what promises to be an unforgettable series.

If you are looking for a passionate, enthralling and unforgettable love story filled with danger and heat, then A Torch In His Heart by Anna Belfrage is the book for you.

I Highly Recommend.

This is such a real change of direction for one of my favourite historical fiction authors, that I have been quite taken by surprise, not by her writing skill, as that's always on top form, but by her ability to place me very firmly in the present with a compelling, contemporary story, which also has a dark and deeply troubled past.

Helle Madsen is dominated by Sam Woolf, her manipulative, and it must be said, quite evil boss who, it seems, will stop at nothing to get what he wants. That he wants Helle, with a passion bordering on obsession, is obvious from the start of the novel. However, there is also someone else who wants Helle with an equal passion. Business man, Jason Morris has loved Helle forever, and as their past lives start to explode and combine, so a story of desire, longing and the settling of old hostilities starts to come to life. Ensnared in a never-ending cycle of love, lust and hatred, the three main characters, who dominate the story, have had more than their fair share of anguish to contend with as they hurtle through time.

Written with this skilful author's trademark fine attention to detail, A Torch in his Heart fairly sizzles with passion. Never one to shy away from intimacy in her novels, this dark and moody paranormal story goes to a whole new level of scorching sexuality. The author’s ability to create passionate romance is unequalled and she certainly doesn’t shy away from eroticism bringing together two of her characters with a sexual explicitness which may not be to everyone’s taste.

Cleverly combining a modern day story of high octane business wheeling and dealing, alongside that of a darkly oppressive ancient world is, for me, a winning formula, and if the ending is anything to go by, I’m sure Book two in the Wanderer series will be every bit as compelling. Can’t wait..😉

To be honest with you, when I first started this book it felt daunting. There are a lot of pages, the font is slightly smaller than what I normally read, margins are smaller, and it just felt like a really long book. Also, the story didn't hook me immediately and I was really worried if I was going to be able to finish this let alone enjoy it. All I can say is THANK GOD I did because this book sucked me in as soon as Helle and Jason "meet" for the first time (in this life) and I couldn't put it down.

It's clear from the start that Sam Woolf is a bad guy but we have no idea why...until Jason Morris shows up. Helle's strong reaction to Jason is kind of perfect and I love how we don't get their entire backstory jumbled into one chapter, but instead it's spread out. It comes layer by layer and you start realizing the reactions characters have in earlier chapters make sense now so you almost feel like Helle because she is learning the story and the history at the same pace we are- does that make sense?

I can't tell you really what happens but I CAN tell you that this ends on a MAJOR cliff hanger and I need book two RIGHT NOW. The book is perfect for fans who love time travel, romance, paranormal (kind of?), thriller/suspense (kind of), and a story that is unlike anything else out there on the market. I'm not even a fan of historical stories so much, and I took a chance on this one because it only talks about what happened 3000 years ago so I felt like I could get into this. Though a bit of a slow start, this book definitely picks up, has some very steamy scenes, and overall a pretty dang good read.

Oh this was fabulous book.... a romance novel with plenty love, drama, revenge and a ABSOLUTELY AMAZING backstory (past life/first life) I could have read an entire book just about that first life ( *hint hint Anna Belfrage* Prequel anyone )

Helle, Jason and Sam's story blew me away I was completely caught up in it. A story about three souls destined to be reborn over and over again trapped in an endless loop of reincarnation, both men searching for the same girl one only wanting to love her the other only wanting to break and posses her. OMG if that doesn't just scream read me right now.... I loved this so much, I actually think what I loved most about this story and what totally brought me to tears was the backstory the first lives of Helle, Jason and Samion was just sheer heartbreaking and the small slices you get of what happened just made me love Helle and Jason all the more.

Plenty sexy moments along with heart stopping dangerous moments and an ending that will leave you burning for more. A torch in his heart is definitely a book that I could have just started all over again after finishing. All I can say is being in book 2!

Thank you so much to Anne Cater at Random Things Tours and Anna Belfrage for a copy of this book and for inviting me to take part in the blog tour.

I am conflicted about this book. It has an interesting premise and I am a fan of Time slip, but the characters especially Sam are a bit disturbing.

The story is about a love triangle between Helle, Jason and Sam, who have a past, a literal past as in 2000 years in the past, their triangle did not end well. Helle goes to work for Sam and at first all is well, but then Sam becomes very aggressive towards her, both sexually and emotionally. Jason has been waiting for her over the centuries and comes to find her and try to save her yet again, The story was interesting but the characters were a bit off. I found myself getting upset with Helle for the way she let Sam treat her. I also did not realize that this is first in a series book so the ending is a cliffhanger. Not my favorite time-slip but the author writes a decent story and she did make me feel. That is always a sign of a good author one that makes you feel the emotions whether good or bad,

Thank you to TLC Book Tours and the author, Anna Belfrage, for a copy of this book for an honest review. Please click here for the complete review.

I do sometimes step outside of my normal reading zone on occasion and most times I'm left realizing that I should have stayed on my traditional path. I love mystery and suspense, and sometimes that can be found within the romance genre. A TORCH IN HIS HEART was my most recent diversion and I'm surprised that I wasn't disappointed. When I read the synopsis, I was sure that I wouldn't be able to finish as the reincarnation line wasn't appealing to me. However, although this is how the characters are brought together, the story itself offers so much more.
