Rate this book
Hiver 1438.

I loved this little book for its gloomy and dark atmosphere. I loved reading a few chapters, then closing my eyes and seeing myself in that isolated medieval abbey, surronded by frightened nuns and peasants, under a windy, snowy sky, during a never-ending winter.

The main story here is about nuns dying in mysterious circumstances.
Soeur Clémence, our main protagonist, believes those deaths are not accidental and discreetly investigates, and tries to put together the pieces of a complex puzzle.

Parallel to that plot is the Count Of the territory making a deal with a sleazy criminal, head of a group of nandits called Les Écorcheurs. Their goal is to penetrate the abbey and look for a treasure hidden a long time ago by a crusader.

I overall had great fun with this novel, the chapters are short and the writing is dynamic, the main characters, especially Soeur Clémence and the abbey's peasants, are relatable, and the mystery kept me hooked until the last page.

I did not expect the ending at all and thought it was far-fetched. Either more details were needed to make it believable, or a more "classic" closure with a well defined murderer. Still, the book is a solid 4* and I would be happy to read other books from Max Clanet.
