MURDER ON MT. OLYMPUS : PART 1.

A new arc has Wonder Woman and Batman investigating a not straight forward death amongst the Gods.

Nice contrast to the previous Sovereign story which turned out to be epic in a different sort of way.

Now this is more inline with King's wheelhouse. Having Batman and Wonder Woman team up to find out what the fuck happened to a god is GREAT. Way less exposition and monologue and more just regular people talking and trying to figure out what's happening. Love his characterization for both Bruce and Dinah here.

Okay. I’m kinda stunned. Maybe it was the inclusion of Batman, who I’ve never taken particular issue with Tom King writing in the past, although I admit I haven’t read much of it. Or maybe it was because this issue lacked the text boxes of narration from male narrators who don’t even support our titular female hero, as has been my issue with both this series up until this point and King’s Black Canary. The story was much more straightforward, Diana’s motivations are clear, and the element of the greek gods keeps things kinda fun. I really did like the conversation that Bruce has with Diana about religion at the end. That felt true to what Wonder Woman is meant to inspire. There were other times in the issue I didn’t know that I felt Diana was acting as I expect from Diana, but then again Bruce does seem to feel the same way, so you have to believe it’s intentional. That, and the Aphrodite/Batman scene gave me the ick. Finally, I enjoyed the art in this issue, and was kind of intrigued by the consistent 9-panel grid setup for every page. I hope the next issue is as good.

“And what church does the Batman attend?” -Wonder Woman
“God isn’t in church. He’s in the alley.” -Batman

Batman and Wonder Woman’s dynamic has always been such an interesting one to me. I’ve noticed that it tends to be neglected in favor of Batman and Superman’s relationship or Superman and Wonder Woman’s occasional romance or even the three of them as the DC trinity. But what I like about Wonder Woman and Batman is that they’re able to transcend mortal or cultural ties. She makes Batman believe in something, and he makes her fall in love with humanity all over again. Whether this comic is exploring their platonic or romantic bond, their intimacy and trust in each other can’t be understated.

The idea of Wonder Woman and Batman teaming up isn't inherently a bad idea. Hell, Liam Sharp wrote and drew a crossover between the two that I thought was pretty good. But the execution here leaves a lot to be desired. Wonder Woman seeking Batman's help to solve a case makes absolutely no sense, especially since she has the wisdom of Athena. I guess one could assume she wanted someone to hold her back from attacking the gods for their belligerence, but it certainly isn't written that way, with her only explanation being "you're the World's Greatest Detective." In fact, this whole issue just feels too focused on Batman as opposed to Wonder Woman, IN HER OWN DAMN BOOK. At one point, Zeus puts Batman on a different level above gods and mortals. The obsession of DC to put Batman on god level is getting ridiculous at this point. Wonder Woman did feel out of character in this issue for the majority of it. It is explained near the end of the issue that she is tired of the gods treating humanity like playthings, which is understandable, but it is placed in an awkward point in the story. The final moment between Batman and Wonder Woman of him admitting that she made him believe in God again was a good moment, but I feel it would have been better in a Batman issue. I haven't seen such a falloff for a run.

"There are men, there are gods, and there is Batman."

\(^ー^\) Hey! (ノ^_^)ノ Ho!

(I don't know why that song came to mind, but now it's there.)

Batman and Wonder Woman need to team up more often. I loved this so much.

Enter murder mystery. Wonder Woman's plan? Batman. So when the guard at the gate of Mt Olympus requires a sacrifice, it's *so* appropriate that she punches him in the face. (。•̀ᴗ-)✧

The story is excellent. The art is gorgeous (I'm a fan of Guillem March, anyway, so that's a bonus). And the coloring is awesome. Such a fun ride. I want more of this.

Of course, it's worth noting the dagger. Somehow this is going to tie back into the Sovereign's story and/or Trinity's. It was shown/used for a reason and we don't get that reason here.

a murder mystery on a mount olympus is inherently fascinating. this is peak wonder woman and batman dynamic. seeing her explain herself how she could be infatuated with a mortal man is epic. i guess her olympian counterparts just never saw 'The Batman' 🤷🏻‍♂️

Alright I am actually majorly rocking with this premise and it happens to work really well with the nihilistic way King has been writing Wonder Woman lately. This issue starts like any normal Tuesday, not with a an Amazon uprising but with Diana talking to her Mother through a goat as she now resides on Mt Olympus. But her mother has a problem, she got really drunk at a party and woke up to find ares in her bed…dead by a blade she keeps in her room. Now this happens to be the same blade we saw trinity with in the last issue that Diana forced the soverign to carve the word liar into his chest with (let’s forget that), but the big problem is that Hippolyta doesn’t know if she did it or not and now she faces major consequences.

But not to worry, Diana knows a top investigator by the name of Batman that will help with this. Hahahaha, yep, there has been a murder on Olympus and Diana has brought in Batman to solve it. Also from what I mentioned earlier about the way Diana is written, this issue perfectly plays into the way King has been writing her recently because Diana has gotten to the point where she is fed up completely with the games the gods play. She is outright angry towards them at every turn and with her mother’s life, and later Bruce’s life, on the line because of it…I don’t expect her to hold back at all.

Batman is of course hesitant at first, he is the Earth’s greatest detective…he hasn’t had much luck with the gods. But he will do this for Diana and the love she has for her mother. Hilariously they end up taking the Batmobile, and after a quick convo about belief and Batman revealing that he believes that god doesn’t reside in a church but in an alley, they suddenly find themselves rolling up on Mt Olympus. The dude standing at the entrance asks for a sacrifice for Batman to enter and Diana hilariously punches him in the face and spills his blood to fulfill it.

Now that they are inside Olympus it’s time for a quick chat with Zeus, who is not happy at all that they are there. He doesn’t see any mystery to be unfolded, ares was murdered and Diana’s mother will be punished with mortality. Forgetting that Gods don’t really die and he is just chilling with Hades right now…it’s still a big deal. So in order to convince Zeus Batman makes a deal…give him a day and the power to investigate and he will reveal them and if he cannot find the truth in a day then Zeus’s priests may sacrifice Batman. Insane deal for an insane god.

Now with the deal set it’s time to get going, Bruce was given the power to talk to the gods but that doesn’t mean they have to tell the truth and there is no guarantee that they will succumb to the lasso of truth as it was their gift. So they need to go back to the classics: collection, observation, and conclusion. Their first stop is to visit Diana’s mom who is currently sitting in chains. Batman starts the interrogation as normal, by prying into their past with Ares. How many times has ares tried to kill Diana, is it possible you were seeking vengeance or even Justice? She admits that she dream’s of Ares death but only had the pleasure to awaken to it. As they leave and go to visit the next location, Batman sees that it could have been her. Lure them in to look for complications and find a scapegoat and assure her godhood. Their next location is to visit Dionysus who was hosting the party. They ask if Hippolyta left with Ares and Dionysus would only admit that he’s not exactly her type…but above all his highest pleasure is discretion. Unfortunately as he only deals in pleasure…he doesn’t know how to handle the pain when Diana smashes a wine glass over his head. They promise to stop the pain if he gives up who Ares went with, and he admits that he saw Ares leave with Aphrodite. So Diana grants his wish and knocks him out to get rid of the pain.

Next stop Aphrodite. Along the way this is where Diana admits that she has grown tired of the gods, and explains why she had been so aggressive towards them. She is tired to seeing them squabble and watch and do nothing to help people. But Batman points out that she is fog but int to keep her mother among them. “They are fools. And she is the fool who believes she can better them.” It is unfortunately very true that no man can withstand Aphrodite, and Batman is no exception. She immediately gets her hands all over Batman as WW does most of the talking and explains that Zee’s is dead and that’s why they are here. When asked about her husband, she only reveals that he came home late and was upset as usual. Which opens up another simple theory, Hephaestus came home and discovered the affair and killed Ares out of passion. As I mentioned Batman did none of the talking the entire time, and after receiving a kiss from the goddess of love and walking away…he couldn’t help but look back in a distracted gaze as that tried to leave.

Right as Diana is about to talk about men being men…Bruce is struck by a bolt of lightning!! WHAT?! It was definitely one of Zeus’ bolts and the only explanation he can offer is that one of them was stolen and they are looking into it, and even if Batman died…they still have twelve hours left to find the truth or he will have a sacrifice. Batman is recovering but is not doing good. In his hospital room he revealed something to Diana. I actually love this moment and it’s pretty sweet. He reveals that when she asked about god earlier he said god is in the alley, he wasn’t raised with much religion and when his parents died he could accept that there would be any kind of god that would allow that. But then he met Diana, and she was kind like his parents…and after knowing her he went back home and prayed. This moment really speaks more to their relationship than anything, and gets back to the core of what Diana is. The shining beacon of hope that blinds the other gods. As the issue comes to an end we see as Diana lights a candle to the Gods and promises that they will find whoever hurt her mother and her friend.

The art is the highlight here, as I really like this artist. Wonder Woman looks like the movie version, at least costume-wise, and that fact provides some continuity of sorts for this reader. Seeing Wonder Woman interact with some Greek gods is definitely interesting, as is the murder mystery introduced in this issue. Some nice juxtaposition with Batman and the title character, as both characters are respected. Batman holds his own with the gods, and is in full OP battle mode. I recommend this comic to both Batman and Wonder Woman readers, as it is a very interesting beginning to what looks like an intriguing storyline.

I'm going to be uncharacteristically generous and go a full five stars, just because this issue was such a relief. Wonder Woman and Batman are investigating a relatively straightforward murder, for all that it involves the Greek gods.

It was such a treat to escape those goddamn narrative boxes that have plagued Tom King's run so far, I almost sagged with relief.

Not a fan of the art style in this issue, and I don't really care for the mystery either. But gosh dang it, as an unapologetic WonderBat shipper, the scene where Diana tends to Bruce's wounds at the end breathed new life into me. Like the "Clark smiles. You glow." line? Bruce admitting meeting Diana restored his faith in God? Steve Trevor, WHO???

I went into this with low expectations, but I actually didn't hate this. Wild concept that the comic does better when the titled character has a verbal presence and is overall just more present. I hope the rest of the King's run is like this. Please 🙏

Oooooooo! New story arc. Ares the God of War is found murdered. And it looks like Diana’s mother, Hippolyta, is the culprit. Was she framed? Diana gets Batman to investigate and find the truth.

Really really love seeing Batman on Mt Olympus interrogating gods.

I really enjoyed this issue! The premise is fun with a good set up, and both Diana and Bruce seem written well here. It is a nice break from the longer ongoing story, and I hope the next issue can follow it up with the same strength.

March’s art is so sharp in this one. It feels kind of reminiscent of Pérez’s Olympus but close-up and claustrophobic. We get some nice exchanges between Bruce and Diana, too.

A nice, simple Who-dun-it mystery, but with the Greek Gods. Batman was a nice touch. Although I wasn't expecting the kick to the head.
