I am so conflicted about this finale, for a majority of this issue I was laughing with how ridiculous the twists were getting and the line up of characters that looked like someone was fulfilling a toy deal…but then there were other moments with just Batman and the killer that drew me in close and personal and I eat up every second. As we left off the last issue, Batman was able to figure out that Scarlett is not the killer because she has no idea who her real father is. Unfortunately as he breaks into her office, the secret organization Elixir blows the place up in an attempt to clean up. He is able to get Scarlett out and is able to go back for Dr Forester who was still left in the lab. Now with her being the only one still there that draws the very obvious question: who started the fire? At this point Batman has figured out that Doctor forester is the real killer, which is something I pointed out at the start of this arc as their hair is completely similar, but what I didn’t expect to come out of Batman’s mouth was the revelation that the real doctor forester is dead…and that this is Evelyn Scott!! Scarlett’s mom and the baby momma to Joe Chill, who is still alive and young thanks to the youth serums. WHAT?! You’ve got to be kidding me, hahahahaha. At the same time Batman is interrogating and finding the Asema gear in Evelyn’s backpack, he is also sending the entirety of the bat family to defend the youth prison that Elixir is no doubt heading towards to clean up shop.

As Batman continues to talk to Evelyn, he confirms it is her by smelling the scent of his mother’s perfume from the costume in her backpack. Evelyn reveals that Joe Chill was supposed to die in the accident she caused before Scarlett was born, until Thomas Wayne saved his life. She doesn’t see why any criminal should get a second chance and she now plans to rectify that. Which is why she reveals that Joe Chill is currently bleeding out in the basement of the theromise building. Of course with Evelyn getting a dna sample from Batman and finding out who he really is, this has all gotten a lot more personal.

Meanwhile, at the faultless juvy center, elixir have already arrived and have gotten the teens lined up and ready for one final withdrawal using their tech. Or they would be if the entire bat family didn’t roll up on custom bikes ready to stop them. Now regardless of the dig earlier about them looking like a toy deal, I do think they are all pretty cool. Jason especially shines in this fight as his quips towards authority and the prison system hit especially hilarious. But geez, this also seems like major overkill and Batman could have at least kept someone behind to assist him. But of course that’s not how Batman rolls.

So while the rest of the bat family cleans house at the prison, Batman is left in the hands of Asema to show him where she is keeping Joe Chill in the basement. Something she is more than happy to do as she sees it as her chance to help him and free him from Joe Chill. This gives him a chance to ask about the perfume, she uses it as a reminder of Martha and to become what he should have been…her vengeance. As we make our way into the dark room, we finally catch up with how this storyline started as Asema knocks out the transmitter in Batman’s cowl so he can’t call for assistance as she gives Bruce a gift…to see Joe’s last moments. Obviously he is very much against this, he doesn’t salta s for it and his father and mother could never of known his future or what would come of helping save his life.

“No matter what lies you tell yourself, you’re not honoring them. You are not my mother’s vengeance, Evelyn. But I am her compassion. And Batman doesn’t kill.”

But Asema clarifies that she isn’t asking Batman to kill…only for Bruce to wait and watch. Obviously this puts him in a tough position, it would be so easy to let hate win and watch Joe Chill die…but if the words of Thomas Wayne echo through his mind:

“And if we can save a life, and we don’t, what would that make us? You save the life, Bruce. No matter what.”

And that’s how it’s going to be, in an instant Batman whips out the cuffs and goes for Evelyn. She tries to deploy a syringe, but this time Batman reverses her hand and sends the contents right into herself. It’s finally over….well sorta. As the issue comes to a close, Bruce Wayne visits Scarlett in the hospital as she sits by the bedside of the father she just met. She also knows about what he has done, especially to Bruce’s family. Bruce came to tell her not to carry the guilt about her father she doesn’t even know. He also believes her when she says she didn’t know who her mother was and what was happening at faultless prison. Which is also why he is here, he has tasked his lawyers with shutting down faultless and he is working to open a new system that focuses on rehabilitation of young offenders…and he wants her help. “I think Gotham could use more second chances.” And as the issue really comes to a close, we see as the mysterious figure named Ambrose, who was with Vandal earlier and represents Elixir, goes into prison to talk directly with Evelyn. He legit goes there to scold her for putting eyes on them that should have been avoidable. He also made an off handed comment about his grandchild dying of polio in the 70s, which was also avoidable. This is really a big indicator of how old this guy really is, and how long his life has been. Which I assume is leading us directly into the next storyline as he teases that there are people who need to be silenced to keep quiet about their organization. That sounds really interesting.

This issue concludes Tom Taylor's first saga, and I can say without fear of being wrong that it is one of the best that the comic book detective has had in a long time, without needing to be 30.Numbers to count a single part

In summary, it is revealed that Martha's job purchase was always her mother, and she was the woman who saved Bruce Wayne's mother, who is also his wife De Chillo, the killer of Batman's parents, seeks justice for what the man did by creating both the Elixir and the massacre of children.

Batman obviously wants to stop her, and even though he hates Chill, he knows very well that killing is pointless. What I liked about Bridgett is that it's clear she's not driven by a blank slate, but by revenge real and to do justice in a rotten Gotham, but it became so clouded that it never knew how to stop.

Meanwhile, the Bat-family also dismantles the children's center through violence, where they were indeed entertained.

To bring this saga to a close, I would like to share my opinion about Batman, Martha, and Bridgett, who were the backbone of this entire saga.

I really liked how the theme of Batman and his parents was handled, not from blind faith or just words, but from a genuine belief that Batman has above all else in the life he seeks to protect. Also, at the end of the saga, despite still being the same, he feels more mature and confident about his past.

Martha works very well as a co-protagonist; she feels human and tries her best, but fails because she is in the middle of a horrible chaos and the wrong situation. She probably won't appear in the future, but as a companion in this saga alone, I really liked her personality and her ending, especially starting out in Wayne Inc.

Finally, I think the antagonist is very well-developed; she has compelling reasons to fight, but they are blinded by pure hatred for humanity and the Gotham system.

A very good saga whose only flaws were that Tom Taylor went overboard with the number of issues (he could have compressed them into 2 or 3) and that the plot is still simple, but it strives for good quality.

This issue was just so good. I really didn't expect the twist, and the ending is such a great cliffhanger, and Batman's conversation with someone is just so strong and had me going "mmm" as I read and even talking to myself out loud like I do when I watch TV. The whole thread has reminded me of the arc in Green Arrow even though they're nothing alike but because they both have a social justice edge and a personal stake for Ollie and Bruce, but the last G.A. issue, even though I liked it, was pretty didactic. This Batman story could be but isn't, and I appreciate that about it. I can't wait to read what's next!

A very effective conclusion to this arc. Scarlett is a good addition to Batman's love interests, and her design reminds one of Silver St. Cloud, another love interest with exotic hair. Scarlett has interesting ties to Bruce's past, too, and the connection comes across as organic and not as forced as it could have been. The comic's main story has just enough action and character-driven moments to make for a good Batman story. For a character inspired by his parents' untimely deaths, this is a story that rings true to the origins of the character. Recommended for any Batman fan.

This proves that there are still good twist potentials for a character who's over 80 years old. I hope the potential for the dynamic in this relationship isn't lost, wasted, or forgotten. Rather interested to see how the events at the end develop.

I thought we'd see Bruce grapple more with having received the serum and with his identity being exposed through their dna capture. But perhaps that would've bogged the story down more. I like that the serum allows for a more youthful Batman and a turn in future stories away from the aging and tired Batman we've had for years.

Excelente quadrinho.

História que acrescenta outro passado na vida do Batman, principalmente, no assassinato de seus pais e o dilema sobre Batman não matar. Além disso, Batman deve lidar com um vilão que não da chances para delinquentes que voltam a mundo do crime.

Fantastic end to this arc. I figured the villain was the doctor, but I had no idea of the additional twist to that!
Art was fantastic. Taylor definitely delivered in his first Detective Comics arc!
