Neon Flux

Rate this book
Experience this dark cyberpunk romance that follows two enemies just fighting for a survival in a world that will strip you of everything good just to turn a profit. In the future city of Neo Stellaris, everything has a price. Experience a spicy cat and mouse game, witty banter, and a mystery that reveals much more than anyone expected.

Neo Stellaris is a city of neon lights and dark secrets, and despite the city’s clean energy, its soul is filthy. Corporations own everything, gangs take what’s left, and the people in between that are born with strange Flux powers? They survive however they can. But it’s never enough.

Eon Ibarra has spent her life in the impoverished Magenta District, evading corporate control while supporting her hospitalized mother in whatever way she can, whether that’s sex work or stealing corporate secrets as a cyberrunner. Her rare electromagnetic Flux abilities make her valuable to rebels and corporations alike. When financial desperation drives her back to the underground, she accepts a mission that will either secure her freedom or cost her everything.

Cy Hoshina, a black operations agent for POM Enterprises with matching Flux abilities, has spent a decade enforcing corporate will, making their problems disappear. Permanently. His carefully managed existence is shattered during a chance encounter with Eon—their electromagnetic fields synchronizing in a way neither can explain, or forget..

The mysterious death of a high-ranking POM executive forces them into an uneasy alliance, and Eon and Cy must navigate a city where nothing is what it seems. As they hunt the truth through warring gangs, encrypted data, and a fanatical cult promising salvation through destruction, the power they share ignites something even more dangerous. In a city where power is everything and technology blurs the line between reality and transcendence, they will have to decide what’s more deadly— the conspiracy they are unraveling, or the magnetism between them they can’t escape.

In Neo Stellaris, genuine connection comes at a deadly price, and some data was never meant to be found.

Perfect for fans of Blade Runner, Altered Carbon, and Sarah J, Mass’s Crescent City. If you love captivated by the complex dynamics, enemies-to-lovers tension, and hate capitalism, Neon Flux is your next cyberpunk obsession!

This novel contains mature themes and is intended for adults. Reader guidance can be found at the beginning of the book.

5+++++ stars

This was soooo different and so good! I loved that Eon had a complicated past (ex-s@x worker) and that she was so smart too. Her character had so much depth and didn’t come off troupey or 2 dimensional. She is honestly one of my top favorite fmcs of all time. And the romance she had with Cy was off the charts!

The world building was great and super unique, so was the villain reveal (which I didn’t see coming).

I appreciate that this was something different than the usual romantasy or fantasy books that are super popular right now. I think I’ve had enough shadow daddy and dragon books to last me a life time 😅

The character art on the author’s insta is super cool too! I’m so tempted to buy the special edition from her kickstarter 🥰

Can’t wait for book 2 which comes out next year ❤️

This is a review on the first 20% with spoilers ~ and why I’ve sadly decided to not continue.
.
.
.

I really needed something different as I was in a slump and the fast paced cyber punk world was fantastic and just what I needed! I can not explain how much I was enjoying this world. It was gritty and fun, unique but felt nostalgic.

I was SO obsessed with the FMC. She was dynamic from the start. I love how her struggles were explored and her tenacity to do anything she can to survive really shon through.
There was some amazing scenes dealing with addiction and grief as well which made me excited to continue reading, it felt like this fun and dark world also had some grit and substance to it.
The mmc was also really fun and different to what I tend to see written! Totally 100% a cocky, bi king! I couldn’t wait to see them together because I thought the banter was going to be great!

Unfortunately in their (*second) meeting I was so put off by something the mmc did that I had to put the book down.

I know the plot was set up so that she had to go and seduce him. I know that she was a sex worker and she had agency in that moment. I know that the drug is prevalent in this world and we see first hand how hard it is for someone to get off it like she has.

But the fact that he basically coerces her to have two hits of the drug within MINUTES of them meeting (*yes they’ve met before but he doesn’t know that) and then drags her out the back high as a kite to have sex with her in a dirty alleyway next to a bin had me feeling so extremely UNCOMFORTABLE!

I tried to keep reading to see if there was anyway this would be addressed, either by her or by him. But nothing. They proceeded as expected.

I was in shock.

I don’t see how I am supposed to see him as a safe and attractive mmc in this book when we see him strategically get a girl high so he can have sex with her.

I went back and checked the content warnings (yes I read before starting) and nothing is mentioned. I also notice no other review has mentioned this. So maybe this is just a sensitive topic to me and I’m seeing something others aren’t?

What I thought was going to be a good and entertaining book has made me feel quite anxious and upset after reading that chapter. But really it’s just made me sad. I was excited for this book but now I’ve been left feeling quite triggered by the whole thing.

I don’t tend to write negative reviews. I like talking about and sharing the books I love. But I felt I needed to say this incase anyone else struggled with this part.

This was my first dive into cyberpunk, and I’m hooked! Neon Flux has it all—political intrigue, a game of cat and mouse, murder mystery, and a chilling look at a corporation-led society that profits off suffering. And the rage—so much rage. Plus: witty banter, found family, and sizzling sexual tension. 🔥💥

Eon’s struggles with mental health and addiction are explored with nuance and relatability. She often makes the wrong choice for the right reason—because sometimes, there is no other option. Her empathy and compassion are endearing, and her smart mouth will have you cackling. 💅🏼

Cy, our love/hate interest, can be such an ass—and we love him for it. The corporate enforcer trapped in a trench of misery, convinced he doesn’t deserve anything better.

Maddox, Mercy, Dev, and DITA are my sweet chaos babies, bringing comedic relief through tense moments.

This story will leave you breathless. It’s fast-paced and invigorating, with high stakes and constant surveillance—because in this age of tech, you never know who’s watching and listening. 👀🤳🏽

Buckle up for an unforgettable ride with characters who will make you laugh, rage, chuckle, and cry. You don’t want to miss this one! 🌃🎆

Ava Thorne, you have done it again. I’m obsessed with Neon Flux! 💜

Y’all..

Supporting new authors is a great habit. Viewing things in the most positive light possible is also something I practice as often as I can. Being kind is one of the most important aspects of my life.

But these are reviews, not advertisements. I’m by no means saying that this is a bad book. In fact I really loved the first few chapters. Problematic content arrives on scene pretty quickly after that though, and it’s mentioned exactly once among all these reviews. I’m seeing effusive 5 stars down the row without a single heads-up anywhere.

I get really frustrated with ARC readers sometimes.. I’m trusting y’all to mention things like this ahead of time. Regardless of how wonderful any new book is, it should have at least a couple of low star reviews.. because no book is 100% fantastic for 100% of the audience. Before starting any book I check several 5 stars, a couple 3 stars, and a few 1 stars, no matter what. 1 star reviews are a very valuable resource. They’ve saved me so much angst over the years.

I’m saying this to explain why I’ve given this book a low score despite only reading a few chapters.

The MMC becomes irredeemable (to me) pretty early on, and I feel the need to share it for the benefit of other people like myself. The story doesn’t trip one of my triggers and I’m not offended by the content, but I would’ve saved myself some time if I’d known that I would t be able to tolerate the MMC.

Our FMC is a recovering addict. It’s a significant plot point. During the first face to face meeting that the couple has, our MMC pushes the FMC to use her drug of choice (she’s seducing him as a job that she desperately needs, so she has less room to truly make her own decisions, but that doesn’t let him off the hook in any way). Once she’s high, he pushes her to have sex with him. As an audience, we know she’s there to seduce him. But he doesn’t know that. As far as he knows, he’s pushed a reluctant girl to get high so he can have sex with her.

I’m not offended. I like dark romance just fine. But to me that’s not an acceptable mindset for a MMC. I mean, gross. He’s attractive and stuff. Why’d he have to be a rapey creep? I mean there’s dub con rapey and then there’s creepy rapey.. this falls into the second category.

So there you go. If that sort of thing doesn’t bother you, that’s perfectly fine. Enjoy it! But the heads up is there if you’re the kind of person who needs it.

Unfortunately didn’t vibe with this one. The relationship between the MMC and FMC made me uncomfortable and I wasn’t a fan of the MMC especially. Really cool setting though, may revisit this one day.

Thank you for gifting a arc for my honest review

4.5 ⭐️ (rounding up for goodreads)

This book filled every cyberpunk and scifi need i had. As a stem girlie and a video game lover i feel this book scratched an itch in my brain. Cy and Eon are both tortured souls who deserve so much more in life. I absolutely loved the character depth that was given especially the glimpse we get into Cy past, and everything he had to deal with at such a young age. This book is definitely heavily plot and mystery and high stakes driven over romance. With that being said the romance was spicy when it was happening and getting a male pov is always 🫠 love love love. Will be reading book 2 when it comes out and that ending?? 🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️ also need to mention the side character we get?? can i keep them forever 🥹 I loved them and felt especially maddox gave so much to the story 🫶🏼

what on bloody earth was that ending!? i did not anticipate it whatsoever... this book was so good i LITERALLY could not put it down. this is my first cyberpunk book and i loved it 1000%! i fear this is going to be my new personality, pls inject this book into my veins.

i loved eon, she was so headstrong and determined. i saw a lot of myself in her at times. literally she deserves the entire world and cy!? the man is HOT, kinda unhinged at times and so morally grey (maybe borderline black but we love him like that) the sexual tension and banter between the two was SO SO good!! god i just love them so much.

also, the side characters: mercy, maddox, dev and DITA!? i love them all sm! they were so funny at times, especially DITA — what a diva! can't wait to see more of them in the upcoming books.

anyways, i literally can't wait for everyone to read this so we can all yap about it together! i will definitely impatiently wait for book 2 and 3

⤷ thank you to the author for providing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Wow. This was amazing. This was more story than straight romance for sure and in the best of ways. Seriously the world building, characters, twists and turns were incredible. It’s a duet so leaves off on a pretty big cliffhanger. I can’t stop thinking about it. When’s book 2???

I don’t quite know how to describe this one. Cyberpunk with an intricate world that you are immediately immersed into and then dragged along with our two very layered and incredibly flawed main characters who are trying to just survive a world that works against them only for us to realize they are a part of a much bigger story they are entirely unaware of. Cy and Eon are amazingly dynamic characters with so much depth and nuance that they are not always likeable. They are entirely, terribly human.

An incredible story that stands entirely separate from anything I’ve read lately. The harsh realities of this world a possible glimpse into our own glaringly destructive future. Parallels upon parallels to current realities.

Do I recommend you read this if you’ve made it this far?

“Oh yeah, it's worth it...If you're strong enough.”

3.25⭐️ | Neon Flux was my first dive into the realm of cyberpunk. It offers a unique story and imperfect characters who have been *through it.* However, the execution felt a little messy at times. Overall, Thorne has an interesting premise and I’m curious to see how she follows this crazy ending up in book 2.

Give Neon Flux a try if you enjoy dark cyberpunk romance, urban settings, and enemies-to-lovers with all the tension.

Thank you to the author for this ARC.

4.5 rounded up

This is definitely a unique book. It’s fantasy but in a cyber tech way, and I legitimately have never read anything like it! I enjoyed that it took place so far in the future so there are references to current and past events, which in my opinion made the politics of the book that much more interesting.
Both Eon and Cy have had to get past so many struggles and traumas in their lives, which makes them good together because they can really understand the things they each struggle with.
I think Eons mental health issues as well as her addiction was handled so well. Cy has his issues too and at first he comes across as very rough and blunt, but the more we learn about him the more I loved him.
This book is filled with a unique setting, the sexual tension and banter is top tier! Seriously, I loved all of Cy and Eons cat and mouse games!
I also really loved the side characters, especially Maddox and Mercy!
My only complaint with this book is the beginning felt like a lot was thrown at us world building wise, but overall this book was amazing and I cannot wait for the next!
Thank you so much Ava Thorne for the ARC 🖤

I received an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to the author!

Gritty, dark, sexy fun with a depth that begs the reader to contemplate what it means to be human in a world where identities are owned, bodies are commodities, sex is meaningless and everywhere, and a corporation makes all the rules. Cy and Eon are complex, flawed, and playing a dangerous cat and mouse game that ultimately reveals a horrifying villain that had always been lurking behind their every move. I could not put this book down and will impatiently await book 2. What an outstanding start to this rad new series.

This is my first Ava Thorne book and I will definitely check out her other books.

Could I honestly survive in this place? Maybe.

Imagine literally doing everything you can to survive. You have no idea what’s happening you’re living in a literal slums until a corpo decides he needs your help.

Eon is going through so much and is literally traumatized and has had to do some things in her past that she’s not proud of but she had to do survive. Cy is a corpo aka basically a silent assassin who a baggage claim of trauma but can’t life serious enough to deal with it.

Reading this, I felt as though I was watching a movie. I could picture every single thing that was happening. I had references the things that I already love in life like Tron legacy and Ready player one to help create the world.

Everyone is fighting some type of internal struggle. From being told to keep going and being own by society and not being able to do anything about it to knowing that there is so much more to life, but how do you get that way you have nothing left to give.

The way I am so down bad with these characters, but I also have a lot of pain and want to just give them all hugs and love them. I can already tell going into this next book there’s going to be so much drama, revenge, plotting, a lot more spice

God I love a good vibes read…

This was 4.5, but I’m bumping it up to 5 because I cannot stop thinking about this world Ava created.

This was both unique and also well in line with everything I love about books. The cyberpunk world, the technical lingo, the creative and unique world building, the anti-corporate vibes…I LOVED this.

I did have a hard time following some of the lingo, but I attribute that to being new to this kind of writing (very cyberpunk/tech focused), and even though the lingo was hard to understand, I was still able to follow along closely with the heist, murder mystery, bigger conspiracy at play plot. And I fucking loved it. So suspenseful, so many twists and revelations, yeah just a good old time.

And BOY that last 15 percent had me reeling!!!

I also LOVED Cy and Eon. Trauma bonding? Absolutely. But I loved their connection so much. The tension, the banter. And the growth and vulnerability these two experience with one another as the story unfolds. Ate that shit up.

That ENDING was brutal. I’m absolutely terrified for what’s to come.

I know the project for the other two books are not for another year but I feel like I might die waiting. I really enjoyed myself. I loved Eon so much. The story kept me so engaged. Cy was something special!

My brain is still processing the ending, but I can't wait to find out what happens next!

I'm still going back and forth on a rating. I keep getting pulled in different directions with it. I'm gonna think on it for a few days.

Oh. My. God. Neon Flux has to be one of my top three books this year. This book is everything and more I want from a cyberpunk romance. I’m so so glad I got tagged in art for this because I never would have signed up to be an ARC reader without it.
Neon Flux ties together the most gritty, horrendous parts of cyberpunk and the achingly beautiful parts of romance to make Eon and Cy the best MCs I’ve read in a long time. As someone who loves Cyberpunk 2077 & RED, I was expecting a world like Night City but I was NOT expecting Neo Stellaris. The worldbuilding in this is amazing and, while it expects you to know just a little about the cyberpunk genre, it lets you in on how Neo Stellaris works through the character’s interactions with their city.
The book took turn after turn and I could not stop reading it. I was gushing about it to my husband and thinking about it whenever I wasn’t reading. Ava Thorne had me by the throat for every single word and I’m chomping at the bit for the second book.
I also adore that Eon and Cy are the truest enemies to lovers I’ve ever seen. (I’m not 100% convinced Eon doesn’t still hate Cy just a little but I crave it). Their banter, their hatred, their steamy steamy tension was just…chef’s kiss. Give me more.
God I could keep talking about this book forever so I’ll stop now. But one last thing:
Maddox is my favourite character. I love love love how hard he tries to be a good corpo and still manages to follow Cy along any wild Eon chase he goes on. Partners for life <3.

*ARC read* My brain feels like it’s simultaneously imploding & rewiring at the same time 🤯 That ending?! 😮‍💨 Totally shocked me, I thought I had like an idea of what was happening/going to happen…WRONG. Trust me when I say this is the epic sci-fi/cyber punk tragic romance story you need to read ASAP. It has politics, game of cat & mouse, enemies to lovers? 👀, scheming, double agents, corporate overloads.

I am not super techy so I’m very thankful there was a glossary! It def helped to understand some of the technical things but I didn’t even look at the glossary until I finished the book 🤣 So even if you’re like me, and are clueless when it comes to cyberspace, you’ll still be able to read this and be sucked in!

This story hooked me from the beginning, literally 7% in I didn’t want to put it down. It was like an adrenaline shot to my brain, and I needed my fix. I love the mix of sci-fi with grungy new world drenched in violence & corruption. The neon atmosphere mixed with an overpopulated undercity and shiny glittering world above… it gave me Arcane vibes 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 The danger, violence, dirtiness of it all was addicting and heart racing.

I love the characters! My god, what drugs did she put into this book? Because this is my new obsession. Eon, the FMC, is a survivor. I love that she isn’t trying to be saved, doesn’t need to be, because she does what she needs to on her own to survive. But she’s not stubborn or annoyingly snarky either. She’s calculated, sexy, rebellious, but also caring & had a big heart. She’s used to being used and seen as an object but works it to her advantage. Man, seeing her let go was so epic. But that ending… 👀 I’m wondering what side of her were going to get in the next book.

The MMC, Cyanos, is definitely unhinged & hot. Brought up in the slums, fighting for survival, he’s ruthless and takes what he wants. I love that I wasn’t sure how to feel about him! He has violent tendencies, kind of arrogant but also he can be with…. Everything he has going for him. His morals are…😅 so yeah the first scene with them 🤯🤯🤯 HOLY SHIT I didn’t expect that. The COLLISION that these two have is epic. I mean he literally wants to “fuck her then kill her” 😳😮‍💨 if that’s not morally unstable I’m not sure what is 😅

The spice that we get is 🥵 this is like a collision and then a slow burn. Two unstoppable forces crashing into each other. They’ll either burn together or destroy each other.

We def get character development & like character destruction basically! You won’t see what’s coming and I’m terrified for what’s next.

The side characters- fun & add to the story! I have a list of SUS people’s & it’s growing by the minute!

Can’t wait for everyone to read this!

This blew my mind. It took a bit to hook me but once it did, I was very into it. There’s a lot of commentary both literal and implied about class, social structures, religious fanaticism, and corporate control of absolutely everything. The optics and world building are remarkable. The Romance builds in a believable way, especially considering who they are and what they learn. It’s a magnificent story. I can’t wait for book 2.

OMG this book was amazing! I'm so grateful to have gotten the chance to ARC read this! I have never read a cyber punk book and it's definitely not something I normally would pick up but I decided to give it a chance. I was absolutely hooked from the beginning!
The cyber technology vibes are so freaking sick! The world is so different and fun to explore! It was very refreshing to read something so different! Cy and Eon are absolutely addictive to follow! Their backstories really shape who they are and their development through the book. I loved their chemistry and relationship! They definitely light this book up in more ways than oneAll the plot twist had me shocked
and the ending had my jaw on the floor!!! I'm definitely emotionally attached to Cy and Eon, I can't wait to continue their story! They have my hearts! (Maddox too he's such a cuite)

GodDAMN that was a phenomenal book 😍 I’m gonna be honest: I am apparently so picky about the MMCs in books that I rarely, if ever, love them so much that I relate to the book bf trend.

BUT CY? MVRDER BB CYANOS? 911 I am in love with a fictional fvckin character like OH my god?? Institutionalize me I’m literally obsessed with him.
It doesn’t help that this author keeps feeding us with all these art coms 🥵 10/10 unfortunately you’ve written a new and unachievable standard of man.

Eon is ALSO top tier: I couldn’t get enough of her sassy antics and all-too-human obstacles, despite being such an incredible baddie. Cue me, foaming at the mouth, slamming my credit card down in front of Ava, already begging for book 2. (Sorry 😭 it’s not my fault you wrote my new fave OKAY)

You’re gonna want to read this, I promise. 🩷

I can’t say enough good things about this book! You know it was a good book when you’re left speechless and swimming in a whirlwind of emotions.

Eon is a beautifully tragic character who is working towards getting away from her former life as a sex worker and dealing with substance abuse. She’s gifted, brilliant and been given spectacular abilities in this dystopian future setting.

Cy is also a tortured soul and very morally grey. (His backstory omg 😭). Having the same very unique gift as Eon they are forced to work together for a shady global corporation who control this new world.

Even the side characters I became deeply attached to and can’t to hear more about how they develop further in the coming books. DITA has my heart 💕

Seriously this book was phenomenal. I’ll be thinking about this for the foreseeable future. And buying a physical copy because it’s beautiful and I need this book on my shelf STAT.

Thank you for the ARC Twisted Tales PR 💚

★★★★½

Neon Flux is a blistering dive into cyberpunk, with techno-noir themes. Where the lines between man, machine, and myth blur in the glow of neon and circuit sparks. Ava Thorne crafts a brutal, high-tech world ruled by corporations and chaos, where elemental powers are weaponized and corporations hold the keys to survival. It’s a prequel-worthy companion to Altered Carbon—fast-paced, tech-saturated, and unflinchingly sharp. The atmosphere is electric, the action relentless, and the world-building dense with detail. It’s layered with mystery and if you’re craving a raw, high-stakes cyberpunk story with a unique twist, Neon Flux delivers!

Warning: Cliffhanger ending.

-1/2★ For ending exposition bomb, sequel hook.

OMG!!! I absolutely loved this cyberpunk book from Ava Thorne. This book had everything. It had complex characters, banter, sexual tension, twist and turns, explosions, heartbreak, addiction, elemental powers, death and so much more. The world of Neo Stellaris is incredible and I felt like I was walking through the streets with Eon and Cy.

I loved both Eon and Cy. I loved the witty remarks made to each other and the sexual tension between them was HOT HOT HOT. Eon struggles with her mental health and addiction. Her elemental powers is unique to her and she tries her best to stay afloat to pay her mother's medical bills. Now Cy is just a HOT psychopath, and he is completely obsessed with Eon. His elemental powers calls to her. He has his on struggles he tries to get pass. He also tries to keep himself professional with EON, but he can't. The way he takes care of her is sweet. I could not get enough of them.

Now that ending, just WOW... I was like what just happen. I did not see that coming and I can't wait for the second book. I need to know what happens NOW and will Cy and Eon have their HEA and will big tech lose in the end!!!
