One day she gave notice at her job on a Friday morning. On Sunday afternoon, she received a tentative acceptance for her first erotic romance novel and life would never be the same.

N.J. Walters is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who has always been a voracious reader, and now she spends her days writing novels of her own. I won't lie, it started badly when the MMC mentioned 3 times a date with a sexy real estate agent that he was missing, but I guess the author couldn't find any other way to show us how disconnected from his important job he was. I can't find any other explanation.
I liked how it started. But I'm not from a small town in the US, so I'm having a hard time believing people would welcome so easily a mysterious man with no phone, no car, no credit card. I guess we're having a different small town in my country because we would be suspicious as fuck.

It was very insta-love, so not really my thing. Of course, the FMC was celibate for a while (because of the stalker but also, she always had short and few relationships before) while the MMC few pleasure in life is having sex with different women when he wishes to. I know, it's to show us how boring his life is but I'll never like this kind of MMC. He would have never taken an interest in the FMC in his own little world in Las Vegas but at the end of the book, she's the only valid reason for him to live? Okay, sure. I'm having a hard time believing in their love story.

I found the whole story with the stalker a little lacking. I had suspicions so when the stalker showed up, I was just like 'yay, finally'. The cops were nice but damn, how useless they were.

I might read the next book. I liked the MMC's 'choice' in the end even if it feels a little bitter for them. I just hope that his brother's books will be different from this one. Overall, this was an easy read, but very forgettable.

Samael by N.J. Walters

Spice Level: The only 🔥 came from my heated annoyance. Ok fine it was spicy but the actual characters need a crash test in romance and how it works.

Tropes: Paranormal Romance, Insta-love, Morally gray characters, forbidden love

Quicktake: This one did not work for me, let's unpack it.

What didn't work: Insta-love was just too much. I didn't like that they were just dancing in circles and didn't have a real connection with each other. It was great and interesting at the start because of the story's arc with the grim reaper's son tasked with reaping his romance interest's soul. But once i got to a certain point the dancing began and I just didn't find it much more interesting. I think with more improvements it could have been a lot better. While I did not enjoy this one too much I will keep my eye out for more!

Samael is a very fast-paced romance book. It does have some spicy scenes throughout the story, but not to the extreme or dark in nature.

The storyline is intriguing, following the GRIM REAPERS son on an assignment where everything he once thought he felt and knew, gets reinvented in his heart and mind.

This is not a slow-burn but a very quickly built love story.

The storyline is written in third person allowing the reader both points of view.

I would suggest this for New Adults because of the spicy scenes, although I felt the story was more of an advanced YA read if the spice was omitted.

Samael by N.J. Walters is a suspenseful and emotional paranormal romance that pulled me in right away. Sam, a reaper sent to claim a human soul, never expected to fall for the very person he was meant to reap—and that twist made for such a compelling story.

The romance is both tender and steamy, with just the right balance of sweetness and spice. I really enjoyed this heartfelt love story and the layers of tension and emotion woven throughout.

Big thanks to Entangled Publishing for the gifted ARC—I had a great time reading this one!

As the son of Death and a reaper, Samael has lived through some things that have desensitized him to his job. His father feels like he needs to be reminded of some important values and sends him on an unexpected quest.

While on this quest he meets and is intrigued by a woman named Adrianne, who also happens to be the person he is there to ‘escort’.

The plot takes us through the interplay between them and the challenges that Samael needs to overcome. The pace was a little fast for me to truly believe in the development but the concept itself was interesting. Given a little more page space, I feel this story could better forge a connection to the reader.

I’d be curious to know how the other brothers fare.

The grim reaper’s son is sent to a small town to learn compassion— but then he falls in LOVE instead.

This was the perfect blend of romance and mystery for me. It kept me totally wrapped into the story I stayed up until almost 2am to finish it in one sitting. The pacing? Perfect. The banter? Flawless. The cantankerous cat? A purrfect side character. I can’t wait to read more from this author!!

Ugh, I really don’t want to write this review. 🫣

This had so much potential to be a great read. The premise was 🤌🏻 chefs kiss. The cover 😍.. omg. Yes, let me read about Samael!
Chapters 1-4 were pretty good, I wasn’t able to put the book down! I was sucked in to the story and had to know where it was going. 🤓📚

Unfortunately, it went nowhere and nowhere for another 16 chapters or so. When we find out who the stalker is, and the resolution to the FMC/MMC conflict is revealed. I was so bored with the whole thing- it was nothing like it hoped it would be. The story is 90% about Adrianne’s stalker, not about the paranormal aspect of Sam being a reaper. The relationship was so forced but not felt. Even for being an ULTRA instant love… it was just words on a page telling me what they were supposed to be feeling. I want to FEEL the characters emotions for each other, not just be told. The character angst was so cheesy, the dialogue was disjointed and choppy. It seemed the author had a thesaurus next to them and tried to use as many words as possible- with the exception of “canted”, that was a favorite and overused. There was an excessive about of beverages consumed, namely coffee… and the amount of lip licking made me want to buy chapstick. 💄 The random stalker that was never a red herring or introduced previously in the book was just odd. I would have loved to see more character development with Chester the cat 🐈‍⬛ too!

Lots of potential but completely fell flat 😞

This was an enjoyable read. I really liked the paranormal aspects as I don’t read a lot of books with that. I found it interesting how Sam’s path played out. I really did enjoy the reaper aspect and I wish that was discussed more. Adrianne was such a sweet character. I liked how strong she is despite what is happening to her. I enjoyed both of these characters and their friendship. I also liked the town of Redemption and seeing how the small town persona carried over to this one off situation they are apart of.

One of the few things that was more of a miss for me was the romance. I did enjoy it at first, I thought it was sweet seeing how protective he was despite just meeting her, but I think it got much more insta-love than I would have enjoyed. I kept thinking that they have only known each other for like a week and she was already saying I love you. I know the build up for their relationship was bound to happen, I just wish it happened at a slower pace.

Overall I was really intrigued by the plot. I thought the ending was fun and took a turn that I didn’t necessarily expect. I also enjoyed both of these characters and their personal growth. Thanks Entangled and Netgalley for an earc. All opinions are of my own.

Samael, a centries old soul reaper, is sent to a small town where he is to learn empathy or spend all of eternity banished and powerless in the Shadowlands. Meanwhile , Adrianne has returned to her hometown in order to escape a stalker but finds herself inexplicably drawn to a new stranger in town known as Sam

Paranormal romance sign me up! This is a quick read with low spice. Although there was a fun bed breaking scene 🛌💥

I liked the bodyguard/protector vibes that Sam had towards Adrianne and the strength and calmness she showed. While I love a good damsel in distress 🆘 it was nice seeing an FMC keep her wits about her and not make too many questionable decisions 💪🏾

The sacrifices both Adrianne and Sam were willing to make for one another…💖💖. I am curious if there will be other consequences that arise and not just for Sam 🤔

Although I enjoyed the story it didn’t leave me wanting more or falling in love with the characters.

Thank you Netgalley, Entangled Publishing, and N.J. Walters for sending me this advance review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

While I did enjoy this book, there was a lot of repetition. It's also it's light on the worldbuilding. It took a little bit for me to finally settle into how this world works.

The pace was really quick, but I wasn't a fan of how fast the insta-love happened. I would have loved more time for the characters to bond. It really felt like only a few days before they were all over each other. There wasn't a lot of spice, but what we got was pretty good.

I really liked Adrianne, and it was nice to see a strong female character that wasn't super snarky and irritating. She was really good handling whatever was thrown at her.

Sam is your standard dark broody dude that falls in love. He was okay, but not that memorable. I felt like I never really got into his head the same way we did Adrianne.

This was an interesting read, but I'm not sure I will continue the series.

This moved quickly in the beginning and got straight to the plot. I loved reading how the big bad reaper who didn’t care for anyone in the world suddenly developed feelings. So basically Samael made dad mad by not doing well at his job as a reaper, and not just any reaper, but the son of the grim reaper himself. Samael got dropped in the middle of nowhere with his powers locked down no money and no help. His mission: to learn compassion. Along comes Adrianne and complicates things. All Samael can think of is her and as a reaper he knows he is there to eventually collect her soul so he can’t get attached. Until he does…

I had a hard time reading this as I found the prose juvenile at best with adult themes. Others seemed to enjoy it so I’m not go to belabor my critique and just say I found the prose disjointed and not well developed.

On the positive side the story did jump right in so for those looking for a quick read this may be for you.

I am thankful to have gotten a complimentary ARC from Entangled Publishing through NetGalley to read which gave me the opportunity to voluntarily leave a review.

My rating system since GoodReads doesn’t have partial stars

⭐️ Hated it
⭐️⭐️ Had a lot of trouble, prose issues, really not my cup of tea (potentially DNF’d or thought about it)
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Meh, it was an ok read but nothing special
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Really enjoyed it! Would recommend to others
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding! Will circle back and read again

Samael was a suspenseful romance with some humor on the side. I really enjoyed reading this book and I finished it pretty quickly. However the timeline for this book is only a few days, so some of the chemistry between the characters felt a bit sudden or forced. If you want a new humorous take on reapers, this book is for you.

Samael and Adrianne❤️‍🩹

Wow, what a story🙌 Samael, is a wealthy businessman who just so happens to be an immortal reaper and son to the Grim Reaper. After reaping a soul as per his job, his father commands him to appear before him. He is concerned with his lack of compassion when reaping and guiding souls to the afterlife. He has been given a new assignment…should he fail he will be exiled😳

Adrianne is back in her home town of Redemption. But coming home has brought many emotions back for her, mainly of guilt and regret….but she’s also running from her old life too😢 A chance meeting with Sam puts them on a path determined by Fate. Will they be able to change Fate or is it too late?

Absolutely loved this story and I can’t wait to get to know Sam’s siblings next❣️ I received an advanced copy via Netgalley and I voluntarily leave my honest review❤️

Samael sets the stage for an epic character redemption journey teeming with sacrifice, discovery, absolution, and the most powerful of feelings: love.

The son of Death has disregarded etiquette and rules one too many times in his life of reaping, and so his father issues him one quest for redemption. Learn to reap with consideration and empathy and he will retain his position, which includes all the luxury and freedoms an immortal life has to offer. Fail, and lose everything. All he has to do? Go to the dead-end town of Redemption with only the clothes on his back and money in his wallet, be humbled, and reap with compassion the soul of Adrianne, who death will soon be circling. He hits one unexpected road block along this journey- Adrianne herself. For, as Sam will come to learn with great inner turmoil, Adrianne isn't just an assignment, she's a woman full of life, goals, and love...a love that may just capture his heart.

I was all in for this plot! The immortal aspect of Sam and his background never felt out of place or distracting, rather it fed seamlessly into the story at hand. It's a very grounded story that allows its more fantastical elements to be comfortably set to the side as needed to allow the lesson in humanity to take center stage. I was so enthralled with the overall story! Truly, what a conundrum Sam has at hand. He may not see it at first, but as he spends time with Adrianne he slowly but surely lowers his guard and opens his heart to her. What was a mission becomes a dilemma of the highest consequence.

Sam isn't an instantly likable character, but ahh how I came to love him! For all his immortality, he is a very flawed individual, but he's someone who comes to learn from his mistakes and losses. And learns to be better. He absolutely earns his growth throughout. And so much is due to Adrianne. I love her strength even when faced with the greatest of fears and terrors. She remains steadfast in her resolve and her courage and is instantly lovable. The type you want to immediately rally around.

I only wished I could have rallied around the leads' romance more readily. I never fully warmed up to the love story between Adrianne and Sam. Its flame ignited to a full bonfire with such an intensity that I did not feel convinced by. I would have liked more time between the two leads to buy into their intense love. That said, the ending reeled me into their love story in a way I so yearned for in the story prior. Suddenly- oh how I was sold!

That final act did me in, wheww! My pulse was accelerating, my forehead dripping in sweat, my heart screaming to be released from my rib cage. It was reverberating! The plot masterfully weaves the fantasy element back into is foreground in grand fashion. There were moments I wanted to scream into the pages "why, why, whyyy!" Suddenly that intensity I wasn't sure about lit up in me! I was genuinely jolted in the very best way with how that ending unfurled. I'm still sitting here taking some deep breaths to calm down the nerves, because they were all over the place! I was on the edge of my seat, brimming with exhilaration and anticipation! And Samael absolutely delivered!

This is the first installment in the series and you can absolutely bet I will be sticking around!

Thank you to Entangled Publishing for this advanced complimentary copy, I leave this honest review voluntarily. 3.5

Samael | N. J. Walters
⭐️⭐️⭐️/6.57

Okay so I read Samael suuuper quickly! It pulled me right in and I couldn’t put it down. I love the premise of the reaper going to get his assigned soul as he has for as long as he can remember but instead falling for the girl and having to decide if he’ll follow the reaper code or save her. The attraction between Samael and Adrianne was intense and the mystery behind her impending death kept me guessing!

”The poets had it wrong. Love wasn’t music and roses. It was a thunderstorm with jagged bolts of lightning, it was gut-wrenching agony, but worth every drop of pain.”

It’s just my personal preference that my favorite supernatural/fantasy books typically aren’t set in the real world or at least not modern time or the supernatural character isn’t exactly with the times. It didn’t take away from Samael at all though!

I just wanted a little more and feel like I still have a lot of questions. The instant attraction was just fast enough that I was expecting there to be some fated reason why Samael was sent to her specifically, but we never really got a reason for that and it made it a little too insta-love for me without a purpose behind it.

Adrianne kept mentioning that he granny had these quirks that she called “the sight,” sort of a sixth sense and I was expecting/hoping there was going to be more to that.

Probably my biggest issue, Samael’s dad, the Grim Reaper, sent him to Adrianne specifically to learn compassion. It seemed like his dad knew Adrianne would be special or important to Samael. But even putting that aside, when Samael did show compassion, his dad got mad and punished him? I get he just wanted Samael to stop being so closed off and honestly a mark to the souls he reaped, but I think he set Samael up for failure here.

The book was fast paced and easy to read/get sucked into, but it got a little too fast in the end. And it took me a little bit to follow what was going on there. It looks like we may get more books in the world on Samael’s brothers, so maybe we’ll get more answers there. Like I said I did really enjoy reading it, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to fill their paranormal romance craving without having to jump into a big series! I don’t always read sequels when they focus on different main characters, but I’m looking forward to seeing if books on Samael’s brothers come out!

Here’s my CAWPILE review breakdown for Samael. Overall I enjoyed the book and read it basically in one sitting! Samael and Adrianne’s relationship was addicting. Thank you to Entangled Publishing and Net Galley for the eARC!

From the moment I cracked open "Samael," I remembered how much I loved this authors work.
The world N.J. Walters built, is a place where the line between life and death blurs, and the stakes are as high as is the emotions that drive the characters.

The story centers around Samael Blackwell, the son of Death, who finds himself in a rather precarious situation, sent to the town of Redemption to reap souls, he must navigate the complexities of love, duty, and sacrifice.

Samael is a character that tugged at my heartstrings right from the start. He’s not your typical grim reaper, oh no, he's flawed, desperate for a second chance, and bears the weight of centuries of mistakes on his shoulders. The author does an excellent job of showing his inner turmoil and growth throughout the story. I found myself rooting for him, hoping he would find a way to reconnect with his humanity, even as he struggled with the heartbreaking task laid out before him.

Adrianne Sharp, the assignment, is equally captivating. Strong and guarded, she’s a woman with her own demons, constantly running from a past that threatens to engulf her. The chemistry between her and Samael is palpable, igniting the pages with an intensity that had me gripped. Their connection is beautifully complex, fraught with the tension of duty versus desire, which kept me on the edge of my seat, and pulling an all nighter 😜

The author excels in weaving together themes of redemption and love that challenge the characters’ understanding of life and death.

As Samael’s mission unfolds, can he really find salvation through the loss of another?

The pacing of the story was just right, allowing for moments of tension, tenderness, and reflection. I felt every high and low alongside the characters. As the plot thickened and the stakes escalated, I couldn't put the book down. The twists and turns kept me guessing, and just when I thought I had everything figured out, the author skillfully turned the story on its head.

Overall, "Samael" is a poignant exploration of love and sacrifice that is equal parts heartbreaking and uplifting. The characters are unforgettable, their struggles relatable, and the blend of fantasy and reality creates a story that lingers long after the last page.

If you're in the mood for a story that tugs at your heart while immersing you in a richly crafted world, I highly recommend picking up "Samael." It’s a journey of love, life, death, and everything in between.

Redemption, Protection, Love and suspense all tied up in a pretty paranormal package!

Samael, oldest of the 3 sons of the Grim Reaper himself, has kept himself detached from the humanity that surrounds him. To his father he appears callous and unfeeling towards the plight of humankind, something which he cannot allow to stand. So he sets Samael up for his own kind "It's a wonderful life/trading places type shot at redemption.

Plopped down outside the tiny town of Redemption with his gifts muted and limited cash, Samael has to find his assignment, reap their soul and get out of Dodge. However, Fate has decided to have another idea.

Adrianne, only returned to Redemption to hide out from her stalker. She didn't want to take danger back home but with the death of her gran she has no-one left to be worried about. With the work at the Lavender farm keeping her out of town, she thinks she's flying under the radar but it would appear her stalker is more tenacious than she gave them credit for!

Samael is way more than he appears. That outwardly bored, callous façade hides a heart that actually feels too much and that final sacrifice he makes - OML! The attraction is quick between these two yes but lots of love in real life is too. When you find your person sometimes you just know - to heck with everyone else's opinion on how long it should take!

I enjoyed watching Sam become the likeable character. It's more satisfying watching someone's character take shape and emerge from the armour they've erected around themselves. Adrianne is stronger than she thinks - she has started over more than once and even when she thinks she's cowering and in hiding, she's really just stocking up on willpower to face her stalker.

I can honestly say I did not identify the big bad before the reveal - it really came out of left field. I thought the smexy times were appropriate and didn't take over the suspense of the story. There were a few spicy scenes and I loved the bedbreaker!

The second story has been set up nicely and I can't wait to see what mishaps are awaiting Alex and his love!

Love her. Protect her. Reap her soul.

Samael by N.J Walters
Releases 4/21/2025

•Third person POV
•Paranormal romance
•Morally gray MMC
•Son of Grim Reaper

This book pleasantly surprised me! I am not one to usually read third person POV books but, I really enjoyed how this one was portrayed and how it played out. N.J. Walters did a wonderful job of letting us into Adrianne and Samael’s minds while still reading a general perspective!

The idea of this book grabbed my attention immediately as I love paranormal romance. “He was sent to end her story. But she just might rewrite his.” Jaw dropped. This was the moment I was immediately hooked!

I really enjoyed how we saw Samaels character develop throughout the story. Adrianne is an independent and strong heroine which I loved to see! She is trying to move on from her past but her past keeps creeping in, who better to be there to help than Samael! This steamy paranormal romance was just what I needed!

4 stars out of 5 stars

Samael Blackwell is the son of Death-and he's officially out of chances. After centuries of reaping souls with zero regard for the rules, his father sends him to the dead-end town of Redemption. With only a few hundred bucks and the clothes on his back, Sam has one last shot to prove he can do the job right: reap with compassion, or lose everything.
It should've been easy. Find the soul. Finish the job. Walk away.
Then he meets Adrianne Sharp.
She's strong, guarded, and hiding from a past that refuses to stay buried. The connection between them is instant-and impossible.
Because Adrianne isn't just anyone. She's his assignment.
And her soul's on the clock.
To win back his old life, all Sam has to do is watch her die. But what if the cost of redemption...is her?
He was sent to end her story. But she just might rewrite his.

Marked by Death, Saved by Love
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
🌶️🌶️/5
🪦This book surprised me in the best way. Samael, our reaper-turned-reluctant-hero, is as callous as you’d expect from someone who deals in death—but that cold demeanor slowly cracks, and what’s underneath is pure gold. His internal struggle not to care about Adrienne is one of the best parts of the book. He keeps telling himself he doesn’t care, but his actions (and the author’s clever use of language) betray him. It’s the perfect case of “bro’s in denial.”

The tension between Samael and Adrienne is so well done. There’s an initial attraction, but it’s not rushed into insta-love. It builds in a way that feels earned, even with the paranormal stakes at play. I especially loved the simplicity and emotional weight of a single hug between them—it was tender, intimate, and more powerful than most steamy scenes.

Adrienne isn’t just a love interest—she’s got her own arc, and there’s a genuine sense of mystery around her. Is she being stalked? What is she afraid of? And did Samael’s temporary humanity (thanks to his dad?) impact how deeply he connected with her?

The juxtaposition of Samael trying not to care, while slowly unraveling emotionally, is so satisfying. His charity work, his empathy, his realism—all of it makes his eventual vulnerability hit even harder. And that savory/spicy scene? I knew it was going to be a HEA, but it still brought me close to tears.

Samael’s father also had a surprisingly emotional arc. Watching him finally recognize his own coping mechanisms—and how they affected his son—was a standout moment that added depth beyond the romance.

If I had one small wish, it would be to see even more of Samael’s hidden romantic side. But even as it is, this book gave me tension, heartache, tenderness, and a beautifully-earned love story. 💀

Thank you to the author and Entangled for this ARC!

Samael can’t change fate. It’s a cardinal rule—reap the souls, help humans pass to the afterlife, but never interfere with someone marked for death. Then again, he’s never met Adrianne Sharp. Back home from Chicago and hiding from her traumatic past, Adrianne has no idea that her days are numbered, nor that the man protecting her from her stalker has been sent to watch her die. Their connection is instant and earth-shattering, but as her stalker closes in, Samael must decide: will he reap her soul? Or can he save it?

Look, I’ll be honest—Samael requires some serious suspension of disbelief. You’re telling me that a woman being actively stalked by a mysterious stranger would be remotely interested in a romantic and s3xual relationship with, you guessed it, a mysterious stranger, less than two days after he shows up with no ID and no money in the town she moved to so she could, and let me reiterate this, ESCAPE HER MYSTERIOUS STALKER?! It’s a hard sell, especially since the plot spans no more than a week—I prefer a solid slow burn to insta-love, and the timeline of the story, which takes place over a few days, doesn’t allow for the kind of believable tension or trust I was hoping for to develop.

That said, Samael reads like a Hallmark movie version of Lucifer, and once I forced my brain to shut up and get on board with the premise, I had a surprisingly fun time rooting for Sam to protect Adrianne, her little lavendar farm, her grumpy cat, and her complete lack of common sense and self-preservation. The ‘Grim Reaper seeking redemption’ angle, Walters’ straightforward prose, and the snappy (if somewhat Swiss cheesy) plot kept me turning the page, and though the story isn’t life changing, it’s quick, entertaining, and bingeable—a solid pick for thriller and paranormal romance readers alike.

If you love the push/pull of not wanting to fall, but falling anyway, romance, this is definitely the book for you! It is written in dual character, third person POV. I am not typically a fan of third person POV, but the story line in this one kept me engaged. I am a junkie of paranormal romance.

This is a HEA with a strong /stoic MMC and a proud/exhausted FMC. The MMC is a reaper with all the world at his finger tips. He is trying to prove to his grim reaper daddy that he is deserving of his place and lifestyle. The FMC is a girl just trying to start over and make a positive place for herself. She is trying to outrun her traumatic past and live with the guilt of leaving her grandma. They are brought together by “devine intervention” and a stalker situation.

The main theme that I got out of this romance read, is that people and relationships are more important than any material thing or really anything else in existence. Love conquers all - familial love and chosen love.

There were definitely parts that made me laugh, talking to the crow, and parts that made me get teary eyed. The emotional aspect of this book is pretty high. I do wish the paranormal and magic elements were more prevalent. I would have liked to have know more of what Sam was capable of in the magic department. I also would have liked more back and forth between him and his dad. A little more meat as to why his dad did what he did. The action does pick up towards the end, but it was over before it really began. More struggle, more action, more tension is what I would have lived to see.

There are a couple spicy scenes, which really aren’t my thing. And their connection was instant even though it took a while for them to act on it and admit there was a connection, to themselves and each other.

Overall I would recommend this for those who are just starting in the paranormal world, or those just looking for a solid romance read. 2 thumbs up and looking forward to the next stand alone in this new series.

I did receive a digital ARC of this book, thank you Entangled Publishing and N.J. Walters

Samael is a Reaper. Adrianne is a human. When Samael’s father, THE Grim Reaper, decides Sam needs a lesson in compassion, he is dumped in the small town of Redemption with an assignment. His task? To reap Adrianne’s soul. The catch? He must learn to connect with her, but not interfere with her fate. If he fails, he will lose the freedom he has spent millennia enjoying and be banished to Shadowland for eternity. At first, Sam thinks this will be easy. Then he meets Adrianne and realizes it will be harder than he thinks. Adrianne is kind, caring, beautiful, and stubborn. She also has a secret. After coming home 6 months ago to take over her family’s lavender farm, her stalker her from Chicago has found her, and her life is in danger. As they spend more time together, Sam finds that his plan to reap her soul and return to his life is quickly falling apart. Instead of doing his job, he finds he wants to protect her. The harder he tries to stay on task, the more he is drawn to her and she to him. With her fate quickly approaching, can Sam complete his assignment? Or will he risk it all to try save her?

I really liked this book. It’s fast paced, and well written. It’s a quick read, but still had enough substance to feel like a longer novel. The story is engaging and keeps you guessing until the end. I liked that even though a major part of the plot is centered around Adrianne’s impending death, it does not come across heavy. It has a light-hearted feel without being cheesey. The characters are lovable and relatable. It was very easy to get into their point of view and relate to how they were feeling. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an enjoyable quick read with substance. This is the first book of it’s series and I can’t wait to read the next one!

Thanks to Entangled Publishing for this ARC!

There definitely is a stalker trigger warning for this book.

I really enjoyed this book overall, and the ending was action-packed and exciting. I had a vague idea of who the stalker might be, but it wasn’t so predictable that I could guess exactly who it was—which I appreciated. In the end, my guess was only half right. I don’t usually love when stories like this make the “big reveal” too obvious, so the fact that this one kept me guessing made it that much better.

The relationship between the main characters was also really sweet. Watching the male main character (MMC) slowly fall in love was adorable and felt authentic.

That said, I did find the third-person POV a bit tough to get used to. It's not the perspective I typically prefer, and at times the story felt emotionally disconnected. But in hindsight, that actually worked well with the MMC’s personality—he’s emotionally distant from the world around him, so it makes sense that the writing reflects that. It’s something to keep in mind going into the book, but I’d say it was done with intention and skill.

The one part that didn’t sit well with me was how easily trusting the female main character (FMC) was, especially considering she was dealing with a stalker. As a woman myself who’s moved from a small town to a big city, I found it hard to believe she’d let someone she barely knew stay in her home, especially so quickly. It just didn’t quite align with how cautious and concerned she seemed in other parts of the story.

Still, I liked the book overall and would definitely be interested in reading a second installment to see how the story continues and what happens next.

This was good! I'm thinking 3.75/4 stars. I liked the premise of the book, I found it to be different to what I usually read.

The book goes straight into the plot, starting with Samael, one of the sons of the Grim Reaper, being sent to a small town in the middle of nowhere called Redemption, all because his father is not happy with the job he's been doing and wants him to learn some compassion. Samael is ready to complete this job and get back to his life, but it all changes when he meets Adrianne, but not even their connection can make him forget that she is his next assignment.

I would have liked a little bit more background information/worldbuilding before going straight into it, as I was a bit confused at the start and just had to roll with it. The citizens of Redemption were more trusting of Samael than I would have thought, considering the situation, but who knows. I liked Adrianne, she was a good character and I liked her strength and resilience. Her relationship with Samael was a little bit too insta-love for my liking, and I struggled a little bit to relate to their big feelings considering that by the end of the book, they had only known each other for a week, and half of those days they were separated. I think it could have been written over a longer time period (idk, give me at least two weeks!) without deducting anything from the story. I like a bit of mystery so I was intrigued by the stalker aspect and came up with some theories while reading (happy to report I was correct about some of them!). I liked the action and how the situation was resolved, although the ending of the book left me a little bit confused. However, this book was quick to read, the pace was good, and I am intrigued about how the story will continue, so I will be reading the next book when it comes out!

Thank you to NetGalley, Entangled Publishing, LLC, and N.J. Walters for the opportunity to read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Solid start to the series…

A relationship with the son of Death? Samael and Adrianne’s story had me wondering all through it. How could they – a human and an immortal – possibly ever have a happily ever after? Grim Death as a father-in-law? I was intrigued and needed to find out how this played out.

Adrianne came home to find safety, to grieve her grandmother and to make up for the fact she didn’t do it sooner. Samael, on the other hand, was forced to Redemption by his father, who felt he wasn’t taking his duties as a reaper seriously enough. Meeting by accident (supposedly), taking each other at face value meant Adrianne was either going to have to trust him, or face things on her own. Samael made it clear that was completely up to her, but he knew what he hoped she’d do.

Steamy and mysterious, I liked the characters and the way the story unfolded. Adrianne was a balance - strong yet vulnerable, based in reality but also not afraid to hope. Samael, well he was learning that emotions weren’t the worst things to have as he became fascinated with the woman he was falling in love with. Both fighting against the attraction, both failing miserably...

A bit repetitious in spots, yet that didn’t take away from a plot that moved quickly to a satisfying HFN. There are still questions to answer about how their relationship continues and if Samael’s mysterious brothers will make an appearance. Will they live a long life or one that never ends? Sooo many questions and I look forward to finding the answers.

*I happily reviewed this story

Samael
N.J. Walters
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Samael Blackwell is literally the son of Death and his dear old Dad is not happy with him. After centuries of reaping souls without any regard for the rules, his father sends him to a small town that is aptly named Redemption. With only five hundred dollars cash and the clothes on his back, Sam has one last chance to prove he can do his job correctly: reap with compassion, or lose everything.

It really shouldn't be that hard. Find the soul, finish the job, learn compassion, and then walk away.

Adrianne Sharpe is hiding from her past. A past that is coming back to haunt her in every way possible. She thought she'd be safe if she moved back home to Redemption. She left no trail, and no way for her stalker to find her. But he has, and that's where Sam comes in. She's his assignment.

To win back his old life, all Sam has to do is watch her die and help her through to her afterlife. It should be easy right? But what if the cost of redemption is her?

Sam was sent to end her story. But she just might rewrite his.

Wow! What an amazing start to a new series. N.J. Walters does it again. From the moment I opened this book the world around me didn't exist anymore. It was the most fabulous start to my new favorite series. As you read this book the characters loom up and come to life in front of your very eyes. I honestly didn't know what to expect. Sam ran so hot and cold I wasn't too sure about him at first. Adrianne was so cute, brave, and strong. I was rooting for them the whole way. Ms. Walters thank you for writing such an incredible book. All in all I highly recommend this book to readers everywhere.
