Historical Romance.

He strolled into her painting . . . and into her heart.

It's 1910 and Anna Lewis is praying that God will help her become a premier watercolor artist of the lush beaches of Carmel, California. When a man strides down the beach and stops to face the ocean, Anna sketches him into her painting. Was it a mistake? Anna thinks so when he tells her he doesn't have spare change to purchase her work. Spare change indeed! But while she seeks God's leading for her art career, she'd better keep her day job as nursemaid to two rambunctious boys.

The minute Charles Jordan walks away, he regrets criticizing the woman's painting but as he told the artist, he's just been jilted at the altar.

How will a secret from Charles' past affect his chances of loving again? And how will Anna have the hope she needs when tragedy strikes and she must rely on the one man who crushed her spirit?

***

Kyle, author of two contemporary novels (Delivered with Love, The Heart Stone), tries her hand at historical fiction with this new tale set in Carmel, Calif., in 1910. Anna Lewis dreams of making a living as a watercolorist, but knows she has only six months to prove herself before her father expects her to move home and marry his business partner. Writer Charles Jordan, jilted at the altar, wants nothing to do with women, but something about Anna intrigues him. Their paths cross repeatedly, and Anna is torn between her desire to paint and the obligations of her job as nursemaid to two young boys, even as Charles' great-aunt and Anna become friends. Will Anna be forced into wedlock with a man she abhors? Will Charles ever get past his fear of commitment? This is serviceable historical fiction, offering readers an interesting setting, as well as romance between a writer and a painter that must overcome many a trial if it is to blossom. --Publishers Weekly 11 Aug. 2014: 51. 3 Stars. Watercolor Dreams is a delightful story of a hero who has lost faith in love and a heroine who has no time for it - and the aunt makes for a sweet matchmaker. Summary: After being left at the alter, novelist Charles Jordan is rude to artist Anna Lewis. He realizes he should apologize and seeks to find her. Anna has taken a job as a nursemaid to keep from marrying the man her father has chosen for her. She is determined to dedicate her life to her art with no time for marriage. Charles, having lost one love and been rejected by another, has no desire for marriage either. But an accident places Anna in his home in the care of his great-aunt, an aunt who sees there is more to Charles and Anna's relationship than just friendship. --Susan Mobley, Romantic Times, August 17, 2014

I really enjoyed this book. The story line and the characters had me pulled in from the first pages. It is wonderfully written historical romance that captures the essence of the early 1900's. I enjoyed following Anna on her journey to finding the independence she wanted so badly in a day when young woman weren't supposed to be independent and her finding that one person God had intended for her life. This is the first book I have read by this author but it won't be my last. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Publisher in exchange for my honest review.

It’s not always easy to write Inspirational romance with enough conflict to keep it interesting. After all, Christian characters should be able to lean on their faith in times of trouble, right? But Sherry Kyle has managed to inject a healthy dose of conflict into her new release, Watercolor Dreams, taking full advantage of struggles heroines only experienced in historical times.

Artist Anna Lewis doesn’t just face pressure to give up her art and settle down as a proper housewife. She must also conform to acceptable behavior and discretion in her interactions with the charming, melancholy writer who is the subject of one of her favorite works of art, leading to misunderstandings uncommon today. And that’s just for starters. There’s deception and danger worked into this well-written story, and you’ll enjoy the way Kyle’s plot unfolds.

I recommend Watercolor Dreams for teens and up. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Excellent read. Anna is running from her Dad's choice for her husband. Can she fulfill her dream of being a successful artist? Who is this stranger that poses for her on the beach? Why is he so depressed? Can Anna help this man, Charles, without her heart becoming involved? After all she can't let her heart be involved and be a successful artist too, or can she? Three men are vying for her attention. Will she fall in love and with which one? Not only is there romance, forgiveness, and faith, but there is mystery too. The story line shows us how important our family is, and it shows us the love that God has for us.

I was given an early read for review. I do not personally know this author

Have you ever read a book, that when you start it you’re giggly? Because of excitement? Yeah, that was me reading “Watercolor Dreams”. After reading “Delivered With Love” over a year ago, I became a fan of Miss Sherry Kyle’s writing (I plan on re-reading & re-reviewing it early next year!). I was reading this book very late at night (I couldn’t put it down!) and there were many times while reading that I had to clamp my hand over my mouth so I wouldn’t wake my parents! I was laughing so hard!

I was fortunate to be given a copy of Watercolor Dreams by Sherry Kyle to review, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anna, an artist is in Carmel for six months, to prove to her father that she can make a living from painting. It's 1910 and her father wants Anna to marry Henry, his business partner.
Charles, jilted at the altar, walks into Anna's painting - a dark, brooding presence. It is the first time their paths cross but it won't be the last.
Charles and Anna have a natural attraction to each other, which they both try to fight - Charles because three women have let him down in the past; and Anna because she wants a career as an artist, not a husband.
Charles' Aunt Clara turns up on his doorstep to take care of him, and ends up taking Anna under her wing too. Aunt Clara can see just how perfect Anna and Charles would be together. But can Charles let her into his life or is he too scarred from the past? And will Anna love any man more than her painting? Can she break free from an arranged marriage to Henry? Only one way to find out...pick up a copy of Watercolor Dreams!
The reader is transported back in time a hundred years, when life should have been simpler, but the characters face the same problems then as we do now. Charles has an issue with trust, and must learn that people can be trusted and not everyone will let you down. For Anna it is her independence that needs to be surrendered.
Throughout the novel, the theme of dreams occurs. All the characters have a dream that they are pursuing, but dreams can become a reality, if you are prepared to lay down self and listen to God's calling.
I thoroughly enjoyed Watercolor Dreams which went from a beautifully written story about love, dreams and families; to suddenly becoming action packed, and I found myself reading hurriedly with a racing heart, to see how the story was resolved.
Sherry Kyle has a real talent for writing, drawing realistic characters that the reader can empathise with. I shall be eagerly awaiting more novels from her.

It's hard to beat Carmel-by-the-Sea as a setting for a a story about a budding artist. I will admit that I was more interested in her career than her love life. I found Charles a bit of a bore, but I loved Anna's confidence in her talent and gumption in getting herself a showing. The author painted some lovely moments of Anna at her easel. I especially enjoyed the scene where set up shop in front of a beach house and sketched wildflowers until the fog rolled in.

A character that captured my imagination, one I would have liked to know more about, was her bohemian friend Helen. We weren't privy to Helen's shadow world. I would have liked to know more about Helen's circumstances. She seemed to be seeking Anna's friendship, but Anna was too preoccupied with Charles to do more more than toss Helen an invitation to church.

This is a sweet romance circa 1910. Women were beginning to have a voice, and I think Sherry Kyle captured that.

Very good, light and enjoyable read. I am thankful to have been given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

At first the attachment of the two main characters seemed unexpectedly quick. However, not long into it at all, during the disastrous diner scene, :) I found the flow to be perfect.

The characters were well developed, and I enjoyed meeting them. My favorite may have been Aunt Clara. I think she's the type of woman that I would like to become. The children were wonderful and right on target for little boys that age.

Just because it's a light read doesn't mean that it isn't sweet, heartfelt, and enjoyable!

Very good book. Easy to read and light reading. I normally don't like short chapters but I soon grew accustomed to them. The story line was good and was easy to follow. Anna has left home to follow her dream of becoming a water color artist and to escape a prearranged marriage that her Father has arranged for her with his business associate. As she meets a stranger and paints him into her picture, things begin to change in her life. In the end she finds true happiness and live. The stranger finds forgiveness.

Absolutely wonderful! Loved the main characters. The children, well that was an adventure in itself. Heartwarming, suspense, mystery, exciting, as well as sweet, and even though faith was in it, it was just right amount, done tactfully, not pushy and preachy.
The ending wasn't just about her, but all involved there was conclusion for them also.

When I first started reading Watercolor Dreams, I thought it was going to be a typical romance plot. However, there is much more to this story. The characters are well-written, and the plot takes some unexpected turns. Although it takes a few chapters to get hooked, I recommend it to those who enjoy historical fiction!

A delightful book that had me hooked from the beginning. Who couldn't love Johnny and Thomas a couple of precocious boys needing the love and discipline of parents but instead are being raised by nursemaids. This book is written well and the characters seemed real. I felt like I was right there. A wonderful bonus was the spiritual thread throughout the book.

A Review: Watercolor Dreams by Sherry Kyle

It’s 1910 and Anna Lewis wants to become a premier watercolor artist of the lush beaches of Carmel, California. When a man strides down the beach and stops to face the ocean, Anna sketches him into her painting. Was it a mistake? Anna thinks so when he approaches and tells her he doesn’t have spare change for her work. Spare change indeed! She’d better keep her day job as nursemaid to two rambunctious boys. But what about her watercolor dreams?

The minute Charles Jordan walks away, he regrets criticizing the woman’s painting but like he told the artist, he’s just been jilted at the altar. His former bride-to-be is in love with his cousin. Will a secret from his past prevent Charles from ever loving again? And will Anna have the hope she needs when tragedy strikes and she must rely on the one man who crushed her spirit.

I really enjoyed Watercolor Dreams and the world that Ms Kyle created between the pages – the minor characters like the Chesterfields and Aunt Clara and the setting at Carmel gave the story added layers for the reader to enjoy. The Bohemian culture of the artistic community was a nice backdrop for the love story between Anna and Charles. Both Anna and Charles have pasts that have caused them hurt and it was interesting to watch how they worked out how to move on from them. Charles’ past involved relationships that had hurt him while Anna’s involved her father’s lack of understanding of her dreams to become an artist. I have to say that what I enjoyed most was the way in which Anne and Charles found it almost impossible to interact with each other at first without sticking their foot in it. Ms Kyle was able to show the often fumbling first steps of attraction and love in a humorous light that kept me turning the page to see what happened next.

Ms Kyle has a wonderful way of putting her characters in situations that are both tension-filled and humorous. There’s a particularly enjoyable scene towards the end of the book where Anna has three people turn up at once to visit her. I couldn’t help but smile my way through it. I especially liked the way Charles became decisive once he knew how he really felt about Anna. The ending was very satisfying and it really felt like I knew each of the characters well, like old friends. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a story of true love in an historical setting. You will fall in love with Charles and Anna’s story just like I did.

This is the first book from,Sherry Kyle, that I have read, and I have to say, it was very well done! I was drawn into the story when I started reading the first page. Being an artist, I could "see" her paint her pictures and I just loved how she described them! I am wondering if she is a painter on the side :) This story has a strong theme behind it-having the faith to step out and pursue your dream. I admire that about the main character,Anna. She put so much passion into her dream and along came Charles...Charles,has lots of hurts, secrets, that he has to deal with;as we all do. I love how ,Sherry, gently reminds us of God's love and putting scripture into this book. I really believe that a person, who doesn't know the Lord, will really like this book!
So much detail was sketched into Watercolor Dreams-the details of her paintings..Aunt Clara's cooking...Charles writing and just loved the children's story at the end!! Forgiveness is a key in this book;learning to let go of things-which is hard, yes it is. But,in the end,it is worth it! Yes...Life is hard-but,God is good!! So,I give this book a Big Thumbs Up!!

Watercolor Dreams is a about a young Edwardian woman who wants to follow her passion and become a watercolor artist. Her father has given her 6 months to achieve her goal, and make some sales. If she doesn’t accomplish her dreams by then, she must go back home and marry her father’s business partner, a man she can’t stand.

This is a sweet, gentle romance. The author has created some wonderful characters that you would love to know in real life. I especially liked the hero’s aunt. She’s a strong figure who made the scenes she was in pop with life. And the children in the story are portrayed well, creating a believable barrier to the heroine’s ability to pursue her dream. Also, the book is well edited and easy to read.

Ms. Kyle created a sweet, loving heroine who is doing her best to follow what she believes God had planned for her life, even if it didn’t match her own desires.

This story is a little light on conflict and drama, for me, but on the whole, though, if you like sweet, gentle romances with hints of a long-past era and an inspirational theme, then this book is for you.

**I was given a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**

This was an enjoyable quick and easy read. It's a period piece, set in California in 1910, a time when women still didn't have the independence we can enjoy today--and that fact plays a big part in the story.

Anna has six months to prove to her father that she can make a living with her watercolors, or she will be forced to return to San Francisco to marry his business partner. Charles has just been left at the altar by a woman who had fallen in love with his cousin. A series of unfortunate remarks and assumptions add a humorous touch to their story, as does the persistent matchmaking of Charles' Aunt Clara.

All of the characters were very well developed, and the story was well written overall. The message of love, understanding, and forgiveness was woven throughout.

Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys Christian fiction.

If you don’t mind wading into the ocean up to your waist before you cast your line, then Watercolor Dreams is the book for you. Anna Lewis is trying to accomplish what women in her 1910 era don’t do—become independent entrepreneurs not necessarily in need of a husband. But from the start she muddles just about everything: her job as a nursemaid, her interactions with businessmen who don’t like her paintings, her father. Add jilted Charles Jordan to the scene and you have a lot of pages to figure out where this story is going. I admit to nodding off a couple of times. But there’s a surprise in store for the patient reader. Midway into the plot, the circumstances take a turn for what would seem like the worse, but the effect provides a satisfying, drama-filled ending. At story’s end, the characters leave a lasting memory for the reader to savor. I received a copy of Watercolor Dreams in exchange for a fair and honest review.

It's 1910 in the seaside community of Carmel, California. Time is running out for Anna Lewis, who has only a few more months to prove to her father that she can succeed as an artist. If she can't, she must return to San Francisco and marry a man she doesn't love. Charles Jordan, while struggling to write his novel, is also nursing the sting of being jilted at the altar. A chance meeting by the beach sets these two people's lives on a journey toward revelation and restoration. Watercolor Dreams is a sweet story with believable, likable characters, an appealing setting, a gentle yet pervasive faith message, and surprises along the way. It takes you to a world you'd like to visit and where you want to linger. (Note: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.)

I enjoyed this book! I loved reading about the time period that it was set in because I have not read a lot of books set in this time! It was interesting to me that it was a book that was talking about that it is ok to have your dreams and that you don't need to be married to achieve them! However, in this case she is torn between both pursuing her dreams and real love! When the book started, I thought it was a little slow but as I continued I could not put it down, I couldn't wait to find out more about the characters! The author had you not sure where the story was going to end up because when you thought it might go one way, it went another! That is what made it interesting! I would be glad to read more from this author in the future! " I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review".

I just finished this book and what a beautiful story it is. Anna has left San Francisco to escape her father's plan for her to marry his business partner. She wishes to pursue her dream of painting. The story opens with her painting a beach scene when a man walks into her field of vision and into her painting. She was captivated by his defeated posture. We soon find out that this man, Charles, has just been jilted at the altar. The path to love is not easy for this couple. This story includes plenty of twists to keep you guessing. It has lovable characters. It is a realistic story and not forced. I look forward to reading more from this new to me author.

A great page-turner and fun story! Two people struggling with independence and their trust in the paths God has put before them. This author has a way of weaving a beautiful tale of two strong characters with believable flaws that make us feel along with them. Great secondary characters add much dimension to the plot and flow of the story. Especially two little boys who you can’t help but laugh at and want to hug! I loved how Anna and Charles had to realize how to let go of the pain in their past in order to get what they had always wanted. Filled with romance, great dialogue, danger and heartbreak with the best happy ever after ending you could want.

Sherry writes easy-to-read relational stories that capture the reader's interest and heart. Watercolor Dreams follows the story of a young woman longing to fulfill her dream as an artist at a time when women weren't always able to do so. I loved the setting and time period, especially since I've lived nearby and visited the area frequently. Sherry does an excellent job of portraying both. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and didn't want to put it down. It was one of those that you wish didn't have to end.

Water Color Dreams is an easy historical read.

The heroine is working as a nanny while she tires to become an artist. Her only desire in life is paint watercolors and she does not want to marry the man her father has planned for her.
The hero is a writer and has baggage, but he is a likable man.
What follows is a story of two young adults finding their way.

Watercolor Dreams is a sweet story about a young lady, Anna, trying to find herself and her purpose in life, who happens to find love along the way.
