Chloe Moore has always refused to step foot on a plane - a.k.a Death Bucket. Not happening. However, when she goes down a rabbit hole of self-help books after a painful breakup, she finds herself signing up for a humanitarian trip to Peru in order to rediscover herself by serving others.
She manages to get to the airport, and even survive the first leg of the trip without disgracing herself, but when she comes face-to-face with the very cause of her impromptu service mission, she immediately understands that the universe is not her friend.
Holt Alvarez firmly believes the universe is his very best friend. Why else would the woman he can’t forget - and who would never fly - end up at the same airline gate, going to the same humanitarian facility?
Holt isn’t going to let this opportunity to reunite pass him by.
But is Chloe willing to take the risk?
The Risks of Reuniting is a kissing only, sweet and clean romance, with all the swoon but no explicit content.
Aspen Hadley loves nothing more than a great story. She has devoted herself to story-telling for the majority of her life, writing her first novel at her kitchen table in the 8th grade. Aspen writes what she wants to read: clean, sassy, romantic comedy novels that give you a break from real life and leave you feeling happy.
Outside of writing, Aspen's number one hobby is reading. Number two is sneaking chocolate into and out of her private stash without being caught. Other favorite things include: playing the piano, listening to classic rock, telling jokes around the dinner table, eating ice cream, traveling, a good case of the giggles, and riding on ATVs over the trails around her home in Utah.
Aspen shares her life with a patient husband, 4 hilarious children, and 1 grumpy dog in a quiet suburb next to her beloved mountains.
Given the choice she would road trip her life away, singing along to the radio and sleeping in every morning.
“Operation Make Chloe Love Holt Again is underway.”
I’ve been eagerly anticipating this Love Connections series for awhile now and Book One in the series, The Risks of Reuniting didn’t disappoint.
Chloe and Holt had a heartbreaking breakup and after a shocking re-meet in an airport on their way to do humanitarian work in Peru, all bets are off. See, Chloe doesn’t fly. And Holt is part Peruvian and never imagined to see her there. Not only do they have a second chance to reconnect, but they each learn things about themselves and the other person that weren’t apparent earlier.
I loved every single thing about this story. I feel like I packed my bags and took a virtual trip and experienced the highlights of Peru along with Chloe, Holt, and their new friends. I especially loved Chloe’s emails home and her group chat with her cousins–each one of them will get a story in this series. She’s sweet, sassy, and all-around lovable. Holt? He’s a dreamy, considerate, FUN-loving guy who goes for what he wants. Their interactions were darling and had that underlying current of chemistry that buzzed with expectancy.
Aspen Hadley has such a fun style of writing–loaded with humor, stuffed with sweetness, full of enjoyable characters and memorable situations. Book your trip with Chloe and Holt–their story is now available.
Content: mild moment of peril/mugging/attack; mild romance

The Risk of Reuniting, a sweet romcom takes you on a dreamy Peru getaway. It features Chloe and Holt who unexpectedly reunite when they both sign up for humanitarian work in Peru. This second chance romance was an enjoyable read with a fabulous cast of side characters as well. I received a complementary copy from the author.
I really enjoyed this book! Second chance romance is a trope I love, because it requires work and humility. And isn’t that what any good relationship requires?
Chloe decided to spend a few weeks in Peru on a humanitarian trip putting her dental hygienist skills to good use. She expects to conquer some fears, to push herself out of her comfort zone, to see a beautiful country, and to do some good. What she doesn’t expect is for her ex-boyfriend to also be on the trip. They clearly still care for each other, but the reason they broke up still remains. Perhaps the people they are with and the growth they have both experienced since they went their separate ways will be enough to bring them back together.
I loved the side characters! I loved all the experience they had in Peru that helped them see themselves and each other differently. I loved one particular emotional outburst! I especially loved this book because I went on a similar trip during college and it left a lasting impression on me. The experiences in this book brought back fond memories.
If you love second chance romance with some twists and turns, in a unique setting, this one is for you.
If you love a good second chance romance, this one’s for you! After a very difficult breakup and nearly a year of regret Chloe decides she needs to get out of her comfort zone. She’s always refused to fly, but now seems like a good time to get over that fear.
She signs up as a humanitarian volunteer in Peru for a month. She stuffs down her fears and climbs in the plane determined that her life will be different. Little did she know that her ex, that she’s still trying to get over has volunteered for the same humanitarian group.
Holt has never gotten over Chloe. He’s elated to see her again and determined to win her back. Can he rebuild her trust and mend her broken heart?
A sweet, clean romance filled with signature Aspen Hadley humor. You will love seeing Peru through Chloe’s eyes, the good and the bad. It’s a great story of growth, communication and compromises.

THE RISKS OF REUNITING, is a delightful heartwarming story that will take you on adventure. It is all about the opportunity to reunite, with second chances, done well! It was refreshing to see a mutual break-up and misunderstanding situation where both characters ended up. It nicely set a different tone that was both real and original! I loved the unique setting of this story in Peru and of the humanitarian experience. It delightfully provided such wonderful forced proximity and gave a tender depth to this story. But also, there were plenty of laugh out loud moments in between. I enjoyed watching Chloe and Holt see if they find their way back to each other. Most of all, I loved the loved weaved in themes of growth, communication and compromises. This was actually my first book by this dear author and I can say that it surely will not be the last! I look forward to more book adventures ahead. Friends, this is a wonderful story worth reading!📚🙌🏻🩷

ARC Book Review The Risks of Reuniting A Novel Written By Aspen Hadley Fiction - Romance Published June 11, 2025 300 Pages ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is the first book in A Love Connections Sweet Romcom Series. This book is a great start to the series. I can’t wait to read the other five books.
The author, Aspen Hadley, takes readers on a trip to Peru in this book. The two main characters, Chloe Moore and Holt Alvarez, both are traveling to Peru to participate in a humanitarian experience in Lima for a month. Chloe and Holt were a couple until Holt moved from Utah to North Carolina to enroll in pharmacy school. The two are unaware that the other has signed up for the same trip until they run into each other at the Atlanta airport.
Will their time together in Peru bring the two back together? Both still have strong feelings for each other.
I liked the two main characters and the side characters. All the characters enjoy helping others. I liked that Chloe was able to put her guard down and take risks. I enjoyed reading the letters Chloe sent home to her family in Utah while she was away. I learned a lot about Peru. The author did a great job not letting the miscommunication trope bog down this story and keep Chloe and Holt from reuniting.
“Best night ever. Even better than the first time I kissed her two years ago. This time I know better than to waste the gift.”
‘Ready or not, the adventure has officially begun.’
And what an adventure it is! From airport meltdowns to unexpected reunions, The Risks of Reuniting by Aspen Hadley is the ultimate summer escape wrapped in a swoony second-chance romance and laugh-out-loud moments.
After a breakup and a self-help spiral, Chloe Moore signs up for a humanitarian trip to Peru—determined to reinvent herself. But when she runs into Holt Alvarez (yes, that Holt), she realizes the universe might have plans of its own.
This book has everything I love: Quirky, lovable characters. Email interludes that add heart and humor. Big feelings and even bigger growth, and a charming escape to Peru—no plane ticket required
It’s part of a multi-author series but works perfectly as a standalone, and you better believe I’ll be checking out the others!
Available TODAY—grab your copy and prepare to laugh, swoon, and maybe even book a trip of your own (or at least dream about one 😉).
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The opening chapters have a lot of humor and I was quite sure I was going to love the book. Unfortunately, the humor fades and the book soon slows to a painful crawl. There are long stretches describing the sites and building projects with painful detail. Perhaps if I’d visited Peru before, this book would have gripped me with warm memories of walking the streets… but I doubt it. As it was, I spent much of the book fighting a DNF, but did eventually make it through.
The characters are likable enough, and the premise had a lot of potential (a great storyline for a second-chance romance). The pace just couldn’t hold my attention... I also think the author over-pulled the heartstrings humanitarian angle, like those SPCA commercials filled with shivering caged dogs.
Not on my recommended list.
Content: There is no foul language or sex. There is some violence (a mugging with injury), but it’s not excessive. The romance is limited to mildly descriptive kissing.
As yet another point against it, the book repeatedly and frequently speaks of “the universe” as some sort of higher power. There are also mentions of horoscopes and crystals.
In order to get the desired promotion, Lucy heads to Prince Edward Island to prepare a literary trip to offer the agency’s clients. Everything goes wrong including meeting her middle school nemesis at the airport.
This was such a wonderful story to fall into. Lucy’s life mirrors so much of Anne, including her insecurities and red hair. Finn’s life resembles a bit of Gil so of course I was smitten. His dad like jokes and witty puns hid layers that were slowly peeled off and I was there for all the layers.
The author does a great job describing picturesque scenes and flashbacks to help us see the characters more clearly. Just so charming and heartfelt all the way to the swoony ending. The story makes me want to go back.
❤️the grandparents ❤️going to the carnival ❤️all the literary references ❤️dual POV ❤️little Anne life lessons ❤️crushes and crashes (not cars)
Lucy truly needs this promotion and spending it in her favorite book’s reality is a dream. When Finn wants to be her kindred spirit, can she see more than the past made him seem?
I really enjoy Aspen’s writing style and narrative! The way she brought Peru to life and infused it with authenticity was incredible. And I LOVED the humanitarian mission aspect!
I will say it felt like it leaned more in the contemporary romance over the romantic comedy direction since there wasn’t tons of situational comedy, but honestly, it worked for Holt & Chloe.
Second chance and I have a complicated relationship, but Holt & Chloe definitely convinced me! 🤭
Content: no language; kissing only; one side character is into horoscopes and crystals & is quite vocal about it
Aspen Hadley delivers something deeply touching and refreshingly real with The Risks of Reuniting. The Peru mission backdrop adds both adventure and soulful purpose—perfectly reflecting the characters’ inner journeys. Chloe and Holt's chemistry is sweet, earned, and nostalgic. Their second‑chance storyline unfolds slowly, with emotional honesty and moments that made my heart flutter and ache in all the right ways.
I loved watching them support community projects by day and slowly rebuild trust by night. The pacing is gentle and character‑driven, the dialogue warm, and the growth authentic. This doesn’t feel like your typical rom‑com—more like a heartfelt reminder that sometimes the biggest risks bring the greatest healing.
The Risks of Reuniting was such a fun read! I was just overall amused the entire time I was reading this book. It wasn't just like huge laugh out loud moments (though there were some of those) but the overall vibe was just lighthearted and fun. Chloe's emails to her parents were some of the most hilarious parts of the entire story. I was definitely laughing out loud while reading them. There were some more serious moments, but even those were balanced well so it didn't suddenly go from comedy to tragedy.
While The Risks of Reuniting gives you the com, it also gives you the rom. I can definitely understand why Chloe would be so hesitant to give Holt another chance as their first go round of trying to communicate about the future didn't go so well. I did appreciate that both parties were able to admit to their part in why their relationship dissolved the first time and how they both knew they needed to do something different if they wanted their second chance to go the distance. It was such a quick read but without feeling rushed.
I enjoyed getting to jet set off to Peru through this story and I'm excited to read more about where the other authors in this multi-author series are going to take us!
I enjoy travel-themed romcoms, especially in the summer when I like to travel. This was a sweet second chance romance. I liked how they acknowledged they both made mistakes in the past, and they were able to work together to make better choices for their future. I really liked the last chapter, and I always think Aspen Hadley is funny.
Chloe and Holt got a delightful second chance at love in the streets of Peru. Chloe pushed herself out of her comfort zone to go to Peru and thrilled Holt was to be near her again.
Things I loved about this book; -Chloe learning how to get comfortable outside her comfort zone. -Holt and Chloe’s first accidental meetup after the breakup. -how strongly they still felt towards each other -their adventures in Peru and their time working side by side. -their conversations towards the end to figure out how they could stay together-how they knew life was better together and they were willing to work for that
Favorite Quotes: The warm affection on his face telling me I was his favorite person and me believing it. My gosh how I've missed him. I'm terrified to admit it. Saying I miss him makes me vulnerable, and I really can't survive it. I used up all my brave getting here.
She's clearly given up on pretending there's any room for us to avoid the contact. With her closeness comes her smell, and with that comes a million happy memories that outweigh the hard, bitter ones at the end. She was my very best friend, and I miss her.
I've done life both with and without Chloe Moore, and I much prefer with.
This is the first book released in the Love Connections series. It's a series written by different authors. I think it is connected by family members. Each story is a standalone plot line and they can be read in any order.
This is the first book I have read by Aspen Hadley, even though I own several and have wanted to read them. I will definitely be moving those up my TBR list. I really enjoyed the writing.
Whole a significant part of this book takes place in Peru, it gave me pleasant memories of a recent trip I took to Chile. Much of the culture was similar and that appealed to me.
I loved the characters and the way that they actually communicated. That was so refreshing. I look forward to reading more of this series and also more from this author.
I was able to read an advanced digital copy of this book. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
"Well, I find that it always works for your papa to start with 'I'm an idiot' and go from there." "I am an idiot," I mutter. "I know, sweetheart, but you're the best idiot I know."
This book is such a fun introduction to the Love Connections multiauthor series! I love that each book will be about a different cousin. It makes me wish I had a bunch of cousins near my age, and I’ll never understand people who do and don’t take advantage of it. (Unless they are like Kaden in this book. 😉)
I really enjoyed this book - so much so that I almost missed my train stop when I was reading on public transportation! I loved seeing Chloe grow through her humanitarian trip to Peru. And I hate to admit that sometimes I get tired of books with multiple narrators (I like a little mystery to how the other person feels), but I didn’t feel that way with this one. And I always love how Aspen includes real experiences (hers or others) in her books - the TSA agent! 😂 Chapter 28 was my favorite in the whole book though! That’s all I’ll say about that.
I can’t wait to read the other books and get to know the girl cousin crew better!
I received an advanced copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Chloe and Holt were once dating but life takes them to separate ways and they find themselves in an airport going to the remote place for humanitarian aid. How crazy!
I really loved the new setting and seeing what life would be like in Lima Peru in rural areas up hills. Totally different worlds. Loved the side characters, outings, realness of harsh realities, and that the end didn’t wrap up the way I thought it would.
Can’t wait to read the next book in the Love Connection series and how they’re all cousins so we can get to know the other cousins through the books.
The first half of reading in Peru was literally tellings vs showing and it was hard to keep my interest when it read like a daily log with minimal descriptions and not a lot of conversations. But as I kept reading and I got more invested to see how the book would end and I didn’t notice it as much. I have enjoyed Aspen’s other books so I can’t recall if this is a singular event or if she normally writes like this.
This book released last week and is available now! Thanks to the author for the e-arc copy. These are my own thoughts and opinions.
Content: mugging and mild violence with fighting, few instances of medical emergencies, lots of kisses
This was such a heartfelt second-chance romance set in Peru! As someone who doesn’t travel out of the country, I felt like this story took me on the trip with them! I loved their growth, communication, their family and friends, and all the foreign adventures. The emails back home and cousin group texts were so much fun! This is book one in the Love Connections multi-author series and I am excited to see what other adventures await us in this series!
4.5 stars, loved the story, but the switch back and forth between mentioning God and “the universe” part way through took me out of the story a bit.
TW: Attempted Mugging with Injury CW: Side Character uses New Age Practices
This was such a fun read! Peru has never really been on my radar and the characters, who previously dated, end up on a humanitarian trip together. Holt is part Peruvian and is no stranger there while Chloe has never been on an airplane before, having remained firmly in Salt Lake City. Feelings are all over the place and both grow so much on this trip. And the ending is just all the heart eyes! Also, I want to get myself some llama earrings! It’s especially fun as I’ve been on a “wear fun earrings” kick, so I really do want to get some now! Other things I loved: 🇵🇪 Rachelle, Chloe’s roomie during her trip 🇵🇪 Chloe’s experience with TSA 🇵🇪 The Parque de la Reserva 🇵🇪 Laundry tubs 🇵🇪 The Inka market
This is the first of the love connections series and I’m so excited to read the rest!
I received a free copy of this book from the author for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
After a devastating breakup Chloe goes against her nature and books a humanitarian trip to Peru. Has she ever been on a plane before? No. Does Peru happen to be an important place to her ex? Maybe. Does she run into said ex in Peru for the same reason? Yes. And Chloe is shocked, dismayed, and unsure how to proceed.
Holt for his part (as this is dual POV) is elated at running in Chloe. He's had all the regrets since their parting 10 months prior and sees running into Chloe, in Peru of all places, as pure serendipity and a second chance to get it right.
This is for you if you: - love second chances - love travelling vicariously though books (get to experience Peru) - and are a fan of Aspen Hadley (which you should be!)
Why 3 stars for me, with the heavy emphasis that this was quick read and the writing was excellent? 3 stars is not a low rating for me, it's middle of the road truly. My 4 star reads are books I absolutely adored with maybe one or two quibbles, and my 5 stars are reserved for my absolute favourite reads. So 3 stars isn't low, this just wasn't a favourite read of mine.
When we meet Chloe, she's trying to recapture something she feels she lost in her breakup from Holt. She's trying to get away and reset. So when she runs into Holt, there's no plan. She's not set against him as she's still very much in love, she's not quite ready to move on, but she's not exactly eager to rekindle anything either (at as that stage she fully blames him for the breakup and experienced a loss of trust). Oh spoilers by the way. All this is say is that Chloe is stuck in neutral with no trace of decision making for most of this book, and that's not my kind of book.
I kept waiting for the story to leave its premise of two exes reuniting and for some momentum to kick in. And for me I didn't experience that shift. It felt like there was no, or at least very few, decisions actually being made by our two protagonists, and especially from Chloe. Chloe doesn't decide if she's going to actively move on from Holt, but she doesn't decide to actively revisit the relationship (at least for the first 3 quarters or so, and that's too slow for me). She's very passive. And my preference is I can only do passive characters if the scenery is spectacular and the vibes are cosy, and unfortunately here, I didn't feel super engaged with the secondary characters or the immersion of Peru, and that's purely my subjective experience.
Further on Chloe, it felt at times like this was supposed to be a growth arc journey for her, but it didn't fully land. There would be these moments of her briefly introspecting on her finally realising that she too contributed to the failure of her and Holt's relationship but it felt incongruous with the overall plot and also didn't lend itself to any movement in the story. For example, at one stage, maybe at about 30/40% she wonders why she has so much resentment and Holt is seemingly fine, and in finally speaking to him about their relationship she suddenly accepts/realises that she too played a part. But her earlier musings had led me to believe that she had already thought through this. Like at the start when she's thinking about how she hates flying she was thinking through all the times she turned down Holt's offer to see Peru a country that he loved so much and felt connected to. Or later in the story we see that apparently her family members disagreed with her decision to not move state to stay with Holt. Not saying she was wrong in her choice, but the continuity at times felt confusing to me. And secondly and more importantly, even as she had these thoughts, it didn't translate into anything story wise 3/4 times, making the story feel stagnant.
Holt does make a few more decisions, as he decides straightaway that he needs Chloe back in his life, and so he's just trying to be there for her until she's willing to talk to him. At least this was a decision, but still didn't lend itself to a lot of forward momentum story-wise. I will say Hadley did an excellent job of both telling and showing why Holt and Chloe were it for each other. Although moreso for Holt.
In terms of the second chance of it all, Hadley did a great job of making their breakup feel grounded and earned. It makes sense for early-twenty somethings to dig their heels in over something and stubbornly refuse to compromise. You could see the frustrations of both Chloe and Holt in feeling blindsided on a major life decision on Chloe's part, and feeling like the other party isn't willing to bend a little on Holt's side. And I did appreciate that the deeper issues that this revealed was discussed by Holt and Chloe, and it wasn't just a case of, well there's still love here and that will conquer all.
But, ultimately I didn't feel connected to Chloe as a character, or Holt, and that greatly compromised how invested I felt in their pairing, hence the 3 stars.
Still a great book from Hadley just not my fave.
As an aside, feel proud of me for objectively reviewing a second chance romance book without giving a 3 paragraph preamble on my thoughts on the trope and history with continuously looking for books in this genre that work for me. *pats self on the back*
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I adored Chloe's and Holt's story of second chance romance. They had so much to work through, but yet they did it in a realistic manner. I really appreciated how they dealt with their relationship and their past in a grownup mature way. I loved their growth as characters throughout the story and the realizations they both have throughout it. These characters felt real and relatable because of how they dealt with their issues and the fact that they are flawed and trying to work through them.
Aspen puts parts of her real life experiences from her trip to Peru into this story and it made this story so rich and beautiful because of it. I loved that she experienced many of these things and then put them into this beautiful story. Be sure to read her acknowledgements at the end! I loved the setting of the story. It made it so unique and fresh and I loved the change of scenery and getting to experience a new place through the pages of a fun romcom! It has me wanting to go visit Peru!
The email threads to Chloe's family had me cackling and laughing out loud so much, especially the ones to her brother Gavin about plumbing and her dad about HOA. I loved Chloe's sarcasm. Also the group text between the girl cousins was so fun and I hope to see more of that in the other Love Connections books.
I definitely recommend this sweet second chance romcom and am looking forward to reading more by Aspen in the future.

“Incidentally, turning your credit card and WiFi password over to a trusted adult immediately after a heartbreak should be mandatory procedure.”
Fear of flying, then seeing an ex, in the Atlanta airport, both of you on your way to Peru….this is not how Chloe had planned her summer to go…
Chloe and Holt had a bad breakup. Holt left to go to school across the country while Chloe was getting her roots set in her town. She needs a change and that starts with her getting on a plane and serving others in Peru on a humanitarian trip.
Holt is on summer break from his PharmD school and needs something to do to get his mind off Chloe….10 months has not been long enough to get over her. He goes back to his father’s home in Peru to serve on a humanitarian trip and runs into the one woman he NEVER expected to see in an airport.
Chloe and Holt are forced together serving in the same humanitarian group, her as a dental hygienist and him helping with construction and safety of buildings.
“Operation Make Chloe Love Holt Again is underway.”
Cesar and Rachelle are two side characters that absolutely add so much fun, banter, and they conspire to help Chloe and Holt see what they are too blind to see- that they still love each other. Allie is another side character that made me chuckle so much with her conversation she had with holt. Kitchen utensils have never been more intimidating 🤣
"Women never make it easy." Truer words have never been spoken. "Would we want it easy, though?" I tease back. He laughs and stands, swiping his hands down his thighs to smooth his wrinkled cotton pants. "No, amigo. It is more fun this way."
My favorite things: 🦙 Chloe’s determination to overcome her fears 🦙 Holt’s protectiveness and patience 🦙 The rat roommate 🐀🤣 🦙 The tourist trips into Lima 🦙 Chloe’s emails home🤭 🦙 Shopping trip 🦙 The last chapter…(no spoilers, but I giggled so much! Holt and Chloe are sneaky!) 🦙 Cousins relationship 🦙 The epilogue ♥️
“My emotions are still unsteady, but the one thing I do know is that this woman is mine, and I'm done pretending otherwise.”
Thank you to the author for my #gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Chloe has never gotten over her breakup with Holt, and after ten months of still missing him, decides to overcome her fear of flying and volunteer on a humanitarian trip to Peru. It's just what she needs to forget him...until she runs into him at the airport, going on the same flight and volunteering at the same location.
Holt is still in love with Chloe and has some major regrets about their breakup, and now that they are in Peru together for a month, this is his chance for a do-over. He just has to figure out what went wrong the first time and make Chloe fall for him all over again...
What you'll love: second chance dual pov set in Peru the accidental meet up forced proximity protective hero humanitarian trip character growth first kiss! family emails site seeing
Okay, this is one of my new favorite Aspen books and one of my favorite second chance romances ever! This trope usually features a scenario where one person got scared/made a mistake/ran away and then they have to convince the other to forgive them. Don't get me wrong, I love that trope!! But this time, it was a mutual break-up and misunderstanding where they both messed up. It set a different tone and was refreshing and unique.
Also, big fan of the unique setting in Peru on a humanitarian trip. Not only did it provide the forced proximity that we all know and love, but it gave a different feel to the story that I enjoyed, though there were still plenty of the typical laugh out loud moments that Aspen always provides. All the feels with Chloe and Holt finding their way back to each other. So many swoony moments and lines and their first second chance kiss melted me like a popsicle in July.
No spoilers but the end was perfection and I am officially shipping Chloe and Holt and everything about their adorable story. This was an absolute winner from a favorite author and the perfect summer read! Don't miss this one!!
I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.
This story makes me want to go on a humanitarian trip and explore the world as I did in my 20's. I'm glad however, that I didn't have to do so to overcome a broken heart as Chloe did.
She is smart, kind, independent, and has a big heart- a heart that is broken. Going on a humanitarian trip might be the exact distraction she needs except for one thing- she refuses to fly. Broken hearts make funny decisions though- and she signed up to share her dental hygiene knowledge with the people of Peru. While on a layover she sees a familiar face, a face she has spent 10 months trying to forget. Her ex-boyfriend, Holt.
He is certain this is a sign that he let the best thing in his life get away. He is thrilled to find out that they will be spending a month in his birthplace, Peru. He'd wanted to share it with her for a long time but her fear of flying won out and never went.
She is cold, he is patient. He is fluent, she is not. They have both been hurt- he is ready to get past it, she is not. They both make friends, just not with each other. Will time and shared experiences break down the walls around her heart or reinforce them more?
"I spewed venom at him, he still made sure I'd be comfortable. It ticks me off. How dare he meet my rudeness with kindness?"
There is so much to love about this story: *no food- bad mood *culture shock *humanitarian work *amazing new friends and co-workers *mugging in the street *feeling as if you are walking the streets of Lima with them *redemption *humor *communication *letting go of anger *character growth *unselfishness *love *alpacas
"Life is about learning and growing- stretching out of the boxes we create for ourselves. I think I'm ready to unbox my life."
I'm excited about this series of summer travel. I look forward to enjoying other places through them. Thanks to the author for the ebook in exchange for my honest review.
What a perfect start to this multi-author series. The first destination: Lima, Peru. As I was reading this story, I found myself thinking that either Aspen Hadley is an amazing researcher or that she had some experience in Peru... so I was not at all surprised to learn that not only had she made that trip herself, but some of her own experiences made it into the story as well... and she did a fantastic job of bringing readers right along on that trip with her, feeling like we were there. It did, in some ways, feel like a bit of a love letter to that place, and while it's a place that I have never thought much about, it made me want to learn and see more. Beyond that though, it was also a beautiful romance between Holt and Chloe. Second chances are some of my favorites, and this one was done really well with fate finding these two exes unexpectedly on the same humanitarian trip to Peru. One thing that can be really great about second chances is that while sometimes the initial issues that tore them apart are still there, these characters now know what it is like to not have the other in their life--- and it can make them fight that much harder to make it work. This was certainly true for Holt and Chloe. They had a beautiful chemistry between them that I couldn't help but enjoy them together. And that last chapter? What a perfect ending to their story... I loved it. The emails to Chloe's family and the cousin texts added so much fun to the story as well, and I find myself looking forward to seeing what adventure this series is going to take us on next.
The Risks of Reuniting is a closed-door romance with kisses only.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
Chloe is heartbroken, is facing her fear of flying and is heading to Peru on a humanitarian trip. What possibly could go wrong? What about running into the ex who broke your heart and finding out he is going to Peru as well?! Chloe definitely did not plan on seeing Holt and finding out they would be seeing a lot more of each other on their humanitarian trip. Holt also is shocked to see Chloe at the airport heading to Peru, the place he always wanted to take her. Will this be Holt’s chance to win Chloe back?
The Risks of Reuniting had me laughing from the start. I loved that Holt knows Chloe so well, that he knows what she is going through and is going to be there for her whether she wants him to or not. Holt is protective of Chloe and is going to do what it takes to get her back. Chloe was really hurt with their breakup and is hesitant to reconnect with Holt, but he keeps chipping away at the walls she has built. I was rooting for them to work things out the whole time and loved the journey they took to reconnect and find each other again. Even with their struggles and doubts, Chole and Holt’s second chance at love is so believable and heartwarming.
I also loved the side characters. Rachelle and Cesar are wonderful meddlers and good friends. The setting in Peru was a delight and makes me want to travel there! The Risks of Reuniting is a must read and a great start to the series!
Some of my favorite things: Chloe's emails home, the airport pat down, the catacombs, the rat roommate, the Inka Market, and the last chapter!

Before I begin, I would like to thank Aspen Hadley for allowing me to read a copy of her upcoming book, The Risks of Reuniting, which is part of the Love Connections multi-author series and will be available on Amazon on June 11th, 2025.
Chloe Moore has never been on an airplane because she thinks it’s a death trap. After reading a bunch of self-help books after struggling with a breakup, she signs up to a humanitarian trip to Peru to serve others. She survives the trip but then encounters the very ex she’s trying to not think about. Holt Alvarez thinks the universe loves him. The woman he loves is involved in the same humanitarian project as him. He’s not going to let the chance to rekindle their relationship escape him again. Can Chloe and Halt reconcile their hurts and start again, or will they decide to leave their relationship in the past?
This story was fantastic. You have Chloe Moore, a sassy, determined, intelligent, kind, and beautiful young woman that wants to help people and focus on something else than her broken heart. You have Holt Alvarez, a talented, loyal, charming, sweet, and handsome young man that has experience in construction, loves Peru, and pines for the one that got away. The interactions between the main characters were sweet, honest, and funny. Their newfound friends were sweet, clever, and wonderful. It was cool reading the descriptions of their time in Peru and it felt like I was actually there. This book definitely makes you appreciate the privileges you have. Overall, if you like great banter, wonderful friendships, Peru, and sweet second-chance romance with low spice, then I would highly recommend this book.
Chloe is terrified of flying, and I do mean terrified. She is trying to overcome that fear by getting on an airplane and flying to Peru to participate in an humanitarian effort. She may melt into a puddle before it is over with, but I applaud her for facing her fears. It was even more impressive that her first flight was a solo one. While sitting in the airport for a layover, she realizes the scary flight is not all she has to worry about. Do her eyes deceive her? Her ex, Holt, is standing there with a giant grin on his face. You can guess where he is headed as well.
This one started out funny as you are taken inside Chloe's head listening to all of her fears about flying. The best part was the pat down in the airport. It was classic and hilarious, especially for a first time flight. The story just went further uphill after that. It continued to build and got even better with each chapter. It was quite enjoyable.
This one checked a lot of boxes with forced proximity, second chance and overcoming fears. The fact that the characters are in Peru made it even more fun to read. I enjoyed learning facts about Peru. The two main characters were very easy to like and relate to as well, which always makes reading a romcom more satisfying. This is a great start to the Love Connections series. Also, this was my first read written by this author. I will be checking some more out. I liked her style of writing and humor.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was my first experience with an Aspen Hadley story, and it did not disappoint! Her writing is so witty between the funny exchanges and the romance, and her world building was incredible!
This is the first of the multi-author Love Connections collab, and this journey took me to Peru. Chloe goes on a humanitarian mission to forget about her ex, Holt, but they unexpectedly end up in the same place at the same time and get a second chance.
I LOVE a second chance romance trope. Where Aspen does this so well is not having them fall right back in together and having them work for it. The miscommunication has happened before we meet Chloe and Holt, but it is a very real barrier in their relationship. This is a great example of this plot device being used very well and making a lot of sense. It doesn't give the frustration that it so often brings, but they (and we, the readers, too!) are liberated by them owning it. The romance part is so sweet because they know the treasure they have. By the time I got to the end, I was crying the happiest of years.
This story was perfection from beginning to end and is sending me to check out Aspen's backlist to see what other treasures I can find. I also can't wait to read the rest of the series, and Aspen whet my appetite for what is coming next!
I received a complimentary copy of the author's story to read and review. All thoughts contained here are my own.
