A year has passed since the events in Sanera left the town reeling. Buffy, Jonesy, Amber and Cam unmasked the killer of 2001, but now, a new horror stirs.
Back for the inaugural Hallowed Fall Fest where tourists wander the streets in masks and costumes, the bodies start piling up. With each new death, the gang is left a cryptic clue, leading them deeper into a horrifying mystery. But soon, they realise the killings are no longer confined to Sanera.
An online forum is filled with speculation about local legends, and there is a clue buried within it … if the gang can work it out, they will be able to stop the killer in their tracks… but it’s possible the killer is one step ahead. It all leads to a grand finale, back where it all began…if they can make it there…alive.
SCREAM meets SCOOBY DOO. From the bestselling author of Let’s Split Up.
Bill Wood is a British author of young adult mysteries. After earning a degree in Film & Screenwriting at Birmingham City University, he worked as a bookseller while writing his novels and building a presence on TikTok.
His debut novel, Let’s Split Up was published by Scholastic in September 2024 and quickly became the UK’s fastest-selling YA debut of the year. The sequel, Be Right Back is set for publication on October 9th 2025.
When he’s not writing, Bill can usually be found watching old Scooby-Doo reruns or spending time with his dog, Macey.
Bill's sequel packs in so many things I love: a spooky festival, creepy mansion, local legends and a masked killer. Fun and twisty with a found family at its heart, I can’t wait to see what Bill writes next!
did i guess who the killer was immediately… yes . but did i read this in two sittings bc it was that good… also yes . very fun read i liked how meta it was about knowing it was a sequel
I absolutely loved this book. I couldn’t put it down. I loved all the scream and horror movie references in this book, because of my love for horror and especially the scream franchise, I was able to figure out who the killer was, which was pretty fun. It was also nice to see that Buffy had chapters in this book through her perspective. But I also feel absolutely horrible for her. She really had a rough time this book. I cannot wait until book three releases.
In all honesty I feel like this wasn't necessary. Was I excited for its release? Yes Did I get the Work's exclusive sprayed edge edition? Also Yes Did this feel a little far fetched and unrealistic? Yes
The first book was a wonderful mystery with a great subplot of romance. The story ended in a conclusive way that it didn't need a sequel.
This book does manage to have its good moments and plot twists, but like the first book the murder is so obvious (and if that's the point well done bill) in both books. The plot was interesting however I feel like it should have been about a different town/ghost. It would have made it more interesting as we could have seen the gang learning about a new town and see how it differs.
Not to mention the romance was barely there in this book, we are told multiple times that Cam and Jonesy love each other but we barely get shown it. Like wth.
I pretty much worked out who the killer was from the off, but did that make it any less enjoyable? Absolutely not. Be right back is the sequel to let’s split up. Following 4 teenagers in their fight to solve a string of murders, presenting as urban legends - ending nicely with the carrington ghoul. It was well written, great chapter length with a mystery and back story that tied in nicely. A perfect read for October for a YA read. A great scooby do, who done it feel with all the vibes.
What did I enjoy - the perfect carry on in my opinion from the first book. Well written, with added twists and turns. I really enjoyed it.
What didn’t I enjoy - the only thing that let this down I’d say was some of the unrealistic aspects to it, don’t get me wrong…it’s fiction it’s all made up but I like to picture things done in some element of realism and this skipped it a little for me. From the parents letting the kids put themselves at risk, to the police asking them for assistance, stealing evidence and it not being brought up are just a few bits. Kinda gave me the film “scream” vibes at times too.
Overall - I enjoyed it! A great sequel and loved the writing style. Really looking forward to reading more from bill wood. If you like a YA book give these two a read.

Bill has done it again! Another incredibly fun, mysterious, and action-packed novel that had that nostalgic feeling once again! Like the first book, I thought this was brilliant, but dare I say... I slightly preferred this one!
The group have had a year to dwell on the goings-on of the first novel and reunite together back in their hometown for a festival when things start going wrong once again! You can tell in this book that each character has grown and developed even in the short space of time in the storyline! There's more depth to them all! As well as this, the group's camaraderie seems even stronger, showing that no challenge is too great!
Filled once more with all the twists and red-herrings that were so great in the first book, sending the reader in various directions, I thought this one was wrapped up well, and has been cleverly left open for the possibility of another mystery?
I'm looking forward to seeing what Bill writes next! I'll definitely be checking it out!
Honestly the way I didn’t think the sequel could be even better than the original but safe to say bill has done it again ! Honestly this entire book the horror movie references the nostalgia with it feeling like something straight out of a scoobydoo episode mixed it with scream ! I cannot wait for hopefully more in this series/ anything to come because I’m just obsessed with this series ! Was the killer predictable ? Yes but did I still have the most amount of fun ever ABSOLUTELY butttt bill has left us with some questions surrounding the ending soooo I’m hoping for a requel / third installment ?! Also the SEANCE SISTERS ! A ode to the hex girls I love !!
A great sequel to ‘Let’s Split Up’!! Still very Scream esq but I get the feeling it’s meant to be! I don’t have the best memory but the way it was written helped me to remember the details and the characters from book one very quickly! Lots of spooky vibes to it and lots of suspicious characters! The twist was good but predictable, but that was ok and didn’t necessarily ruin it. There was also the obvious loose end there at the end and I will be interested to see what the final book is like.
I guessed the killer almost immediately but it didn’t stop me from devouring this book! I absolutely love the characters, the setting and literally everything! Praying to the gods that there will be a third book in this series!
Well, Bill Wood’s gone and done it again. Be Right Back, the sequel to Let’s Split Up, was pure magic from start to finish. Honestly, it could totally work as a standalone, but if you have read the first one, it’s like catching up with old friends at your favourite hangout.
I loved being back in Sanera and seeing all the familiar faces, especially Jonesy, don’t ask me why, but there’s just something about him, maybe it’s his everyman vibe, that “just trying to get through the day” energy that makes him so real.
The story picks up a year after the chaos in Sanera. The gang (Buffy, Jonesy, Amber, and Cam) might’ve unmasked the killer of 2001, but now there’s a new nightmare brewing. The town’s gearing up for the first-ever Hallowed Fall Fest, with tourists swarming the streets in masks and costumes... and suddenly, the bodies start dropping. Each new death comes with a cryptic clue, pulling the crew deeper into a chilling mystery. Online rumours swirl about old legends, and somewhere in that digital maze lies the key to stopping the killer… that’s if they can figure it out before it’s too late.
The finale? Let’s just say it’s one heck of a full-circle moment. Sure, I guessed the killer before the big reveal, but hey, it’s a YA thriller, that’s part of the fun!
And can we talk about all the underlying themes? They’re woven in so seamlessly that you almost don’t realise how deep they are until you stop to think about them. Subtle, thoughtful, and never preachy… just how I like it.
In short: it’s sharp, spooky, and totally bingeable. A perfectly twisted ride for all YA lovers. If you’re craving a thriller that’s got heart, action, and just the right dash of spooky horror, Be Right Back absolutely deserves a spot on your TBR.
A creepy, fun and bingeable YA horror slasher sequel! 😍
Wood is back with a sequel to the bestselling novel Let’s Split Up and everything is heightened in this read. Catapulted into the action of Sanera, it was amazing to be reunited with the protagonists and meet some new characters too. I flew through this super easy to read book.
I loved the secrets, the lies and all of the demise. The body count racked up in this sequel and I was so here for it. I love how much the book referenced the first, alongside other slashers, and made a really spookily entertaining read.
I found the start of this book to be slightly slower in pace as you are quickly caught up on the lives of the Sanera four since the previous book, but the pace soon ramps up, culminating in a tense and blood-curdling finale that was perfect and leaves you wanting more!
I guessed who was behind the events that transpired and I thought this was pretty obvious, but this didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the book and it allowed me to feel apart of the friendship group. Once again, the characters truly drove the plot and Wood has created an excellent read for spooky season!
A huge thank you @instabooktours, @scholastic_uk and @billreadslol for this copy of Be Right Back and for having me on this terrific tour! 👻
This book is published October 9th and you must check out both books in the series! 🙌
💬: ‘Trees shed their leaves and grow new ones. But the tree trunk, the heart of the tree, stays true’.
What is it they say about sequels? Bigger, badder, bloodier? Be Right Back was certainly a sequel that pulled no punches - in sharper writing, higher stakes, and dripping with vengeance, we reunite once more with Sanera’s answer to Mystery Inc in a gripping, atmospheric mystery that comes out swinging. Where the nostalgic, timeless thrills of Scooby-Doo intersect with the gruesome, iconic bloodshed of Scream, Bill Wood returns with a sequel that somehow eclipses the first, creating a spooky, downright thrilling game of cat and mouse that draws readers back down the murderous rabbit hole of the Carrington Ghoul. The clever callbacks to the classic Scooby-Doo - from unmasking theatrical villains, elaborate trap set-ups gone awry, monsters rising from urban legends, and even the delightful return of the Hex Girls - were nothing short of brilliant, transporting grown-up readers back into the saturday morning cartoons of their childhood, and the thrills that kept them glued to their television screens. While the final twist was wildly predictable and lacked real suspense, the book’s momentum - and the mysteries and questions left purposely unanswered - compensated with enough enigma and spirited execution that the tale never once lost its grip. From the very first page I was entirely engrossed, tearing through the book in a single sitting, and I absolutely cannot wait to see where Wood takes our endearing crew of amateur sleuths next. The most perfect read for the spooky season! 5 stars!
Sadly, I have guessed the killer around page 80. (which is fine) I know this is YA, but I'm sure the kids won't struggle guessing either.
However, what's not fine, and this is mainly why I'm DNF-ing, I can't get past how blatantly this author 'lifts' scenes from a particular movie. You can pay homage (like he does with naming most of his characters), you can get inspired by other works, but this series continuously takes certain scenes, twists them a tiny bit, just enough so that it can't be called plagiarism, and calls it a day.
In all honesty, Bill Wood, why? Do you think kids these days haven't watched those movies yet and you can get away with it? Are your ears not burning while you write out these scenes? I personally would be a bit ashamed, but hey, what do I know? And so 'Let's Split Up' became the most disappointing series for me in 2025..
ps. I did look up the killer (which I got right) and the solution (shockingly - or rather expectedly at this point) is very much AGAIN in line with a certain movie.
Although I will just add that book two is definitely heaps better when it comes to writing and atmosphere setting, but character work still needs, well, working on...
I was excited to dive back into this world and revisit these characters. The Senara four were still has enjoyable and addictive as ever and this scooby doo style teen horror thriller delivered once again.
Set a year after the events of the first novel, the gang have gone their separate ways but on the anniversary of their now legendary case something isn't quite right. Drawn together again they must face their past, survive their present and fight for their future. As all horror sequels the stakes are raised and the deaths are flowing.
Now I won't sit here and say this is the best mystery of all time, it's not. If you have watched, read and or seen any type of horror slasher/mystery before you will no doubt see where this is going but that for me is the BEST part. It hits all the notes, ticks all the boxes, it's a true horror sequel and I'm here for it. You don't want to leave these characters and I for hope Bill Wood goes for the trefecta.
Fantastic series so far, scooby doo style horror mystery thriller with great characters and pages you want to revisit. Give it a go.

Loved this one even more than the first one! Whilst I did kind of predict the killer from early on, this was still a really enjoyable read!
I loved returning to Sanera with the gang! This one is set at a Halloween festival making it perfect reading for spooky season. It gave me major ’Scream’ vibes throughout too, as you had no idea who the killer was! One thing I really loved as well were the character developments and their relationships. Cam and Jonesy have my whole heart, it was beautiful. 💙Loved Buffy as a character too, the things she ends up going through in this book really tug at the heartstrings! 🥹
Overall this was another fantastic read from this author! I really hope there’s another one in the series as there was something unanswered towards the end! Not sure if it’s being left open or not, but I need to know! 🙉😂 Also I just can’t wait to return to these characters again! I can’t wait for the tv show adaptation too! 😍
Definitely in my top 10 of this year, I highly recommend this one!
3.5 stars. Look is this book a masterpiece? Will it change your life? No. Is it a fun time? Yes. This book was exactly what I was in the mood for. Right book, right time. It's so short, it's fast paced so I flew through it. Moment of silence for the bunny read that ended up a victim of Chelsea's reading slump murder spree. That slump killed more books that the murderer in this book. I will say I had my suspicions on the character that was the killer. But I didn't even care. I had just watch Scream the day before with my best friend and brother and was obsessed. The way that in the film they point out all the horror movie clichés, this book did that too. Constantly making other horror movie references. I did enjoy being back with the gang, they do give mild Scooby Doo vibes but I'm totally here for it. I loved how they knew and we knew about a horror sequel being bigger and this certainly followed.
As the second installment in this YA suspense murder mystery series, this book wastes no time diving straight into the tension: it’s happening again… Who is it this time? The pacing is fast and the flow keeps you reading, even as you start piecing together the clues yourself.
I actually guessed who the murderer was as soon as they appeared, but the story did a great job of making me second-guess myself all the way through. It kept me hooked, even when I was fairly sure I knew the answer. I also loved the meta touch, the way the book leaned into the idea of being a sequel and played with that self-awareness was clever and fun.
That said, there were a few too many viewpoints again, which made it tricky to stay fully grounded in the story. And while it was enjoyable and fast-paced, it just didn’t quite capture the same magic as the first book. Still, a satisfying and entertaining conclusion to the series that wraps things up nicely. Whilst also leaving open the possibility for another
I enjoyed this book!! It’s the second book in the series and if you like Scooby doo vibes this is the series

‘Be Right Back’ is the highly anticipated sequel to the stab-tastic ‘Let’s Split Up’ - an addictive YA horror that fans of Scream & Scooby Doo have gone feral for (I know I have)
The sequel follows the characters and the events a year after book one so without saying too much about it I will say if you loved the first this one will have you hooked!
My thoughts-
As with all sequels in the horror world, there’s always the worry as a fan that it won’t hold up to the first, and that sometimes the creator (whether it writer, director etc) will go for shock factor over quality. However, Bill has wonderfully wove the characters into a new dilemma whilst still maintaining the charm that was ‘Let’s Split Up’. Packed with pop culture references and throwbacks, this is a definite nostalgia kick whilst still feeling fresh and honestly so much fun.
For me personally, it was a tad predictable but in such a fun way (sorry Bill, but it’s rare a horror gets me, I’m just one of those that guesses the twist) but that being said it definitely didn’t impact my enjoyment and I will urge you all to go in with an open mind as I won’t be saying anymore other than… GO PICK THIS UP!
I love the characters and how they continue to develop. Their friendship is goals (minus all the trauma)
Publishing 9th October Spredge will be available in @theworksstores
My most anticipated book of the year, just not quite 5 stars unfortunately! I loved reading this and it was so much fun. I really appreciated that it jumped right back into the action rather than spending too much time recapping on the events of LSU, but I did guess the killer straight away which did tamper the reveal for me a bit and is the only reason it doesn’t get the full 5. I can’t wait to see what Bill writes next!
i literally guessed who the killer was so early on so there wasn’t much suspense throughout the book - i also didn’t feel like there was that much character development from the first book
side note: chapter 19 is supposed to be from cam’s pov but mentioned him in third person? it also mentioned all of the other characters in third person too so couldn’t have been anyone’s else’s pov🙃
